1) Do not call a GM for anything other than you are stuck.
Everything else can be role-played and dealt with.
2) Do not take anything that happens to your character personally. It really
is just a game.
3) If someone "beats" you, either by killing, stealing, conning, whatever,
LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE. Some of my best tricks to defeat others are those
that were used to defeat me.
4) Never grow so attached to your equipment you get upset when you are killed
and looted. It's going to happen. Accept and plan for it. The first 300 gold
you earn should go straight to the bank. As you get more powerful and your tastes
get more expensive, increase the amount of "life insurance" you have.
5) Use "thee" and "thou" when speaking. Not because thee
and thou make you a role-player, but because it forces you to quit thinking
like yourself, which does make you role-play.
6) Use common sense. The same things that you do in real life to keep yourself
safe work in UO. If you see a bunch of bodies lying around, get ready to run.
If you see a pile of gold lying in the road and think it's too good to be true,
it prolly is. If a man in black walks up to you with weapons drawn and says,
"Your money or your life," decide what the odds of beating him in
a fight, running away, or getting killed are. Most times your gold is not worth
all your equipment, and if it's me, you won't escape.
7) Don't ask strangers for equipment or help building your character. Feel free
to ask questions about the interface or how to accomplish tasks, but anything
more takes away from your chance to learn on your own.
8) If something isn't working the way you wanted it to (no one buys your tamed
deer, the shopkeepers aren't buying armor), adapt and overcome. Never get so
fixated on one goal so long you miss all the other possibilities.
9) Learn to roll with the punches. You are going to die. Other players are going
to steal from you, kill you, and get you killed. If you expect this and they
turn out to be a valued ally, so much the better. Compare this with the frustration
and stress caused by expecting someone you meet to be nice turns around and
stabs you in the back (one of my favorite pasttimes).
10) DO NOT DEPEND ON THE GAME TO GIVE YOU THINGS TO DO. Make up your own things.
If you want to be a rogue, waylay travellers on the road, wear disguises to
lower their defenses. If you want to be a chivalrous knight, well, you have
plenty to do (believe me, plenty).
If you dwell on the server crashes, bugs, and lack of creatures, ya, the game
sucks. But if you simply recognize the game as just a shell to work with in
creating your own world and character, then it will be some of the most enjoyable
times (and sleepless nights) you will ever have without a member of the opposite
sex (or same sex for those so inclined *grin*)
