Professions: The Bard
The Bardic Ways, by Clarke, Master Bard; Edited by Xena Dragon

So, you have played the archer, the mage, the warrior and possibly the thief. Yet, you desire something different. The most interesting, yet most misunderstood of the Sosarian professions, the Bard, may be for you.

The number one skill for a Bard is Musicianship. Without mastering that skill, all other bardic skills will suffer. The second hurdle for Bards is to maintain and improve your strength. Too much time spent playing an instrument without physical activity results in extreme strength loss.

To all aspiring Bards out there, this is what I would suggest for a starting a character:

Beginning attributes:
Str - 60
Dex - 10
Int - 10
Beginning skills:
Provocation - 50
Spell Resist or Magery, possibly Tailoring - 49
Strength Skill such as Lumberjack - 1

With Provocation (hardest skill to raise) you wilt start with a newbie musical instrument (harp, lute, drum or tambourine) that is a must for any Bard character. So when you dies -- you will, and often -- you will still have your instrument.

I would suggest starting in Britain, the Bardic capitol of Sosaria, with its numerous NPC Bards and Bardic Guildmasters about. Once there, immediately begin playing your instrument. This skill raises rather quickly and your dexterity will as well. The NPC's there can teach you the other skills, Discordance and Peacemaking, or you can just practice them as well. I would suggest that you set up a macro for Last Object (instrument) and Use Skill (Peacemaking) and wherever you go, keep pressing that macro key.

Uses of the Bardic skills:

Provocation:

This skill is the most powerful of all Bardic skills and one of the more powerful skills in the game (especially as a newbie character). With this skill you may provoke one or more creatures/monsters to attack any target of your choosing. Example, head east of Britain into the woods, an Orc spawn occurs, you can sit back and provoke them all to attack each other then collect the loot. It is also an excellent time to increase your combat skills. Provoke two creatures to attack each other, then attack one of them. They will be attacking each other so you will not get injured and your skill will increase. If you are unsuccessful in provoking the monster, it will become furious and attack you, however.

Peacemaking:

Another very useful skill is Peacemaking. This causes a temporary "truce" to occur, allowing you the chance to make a run for it. This lasts for a very short time, much shorter than the time you need to wait before you can use the skill again. Against other players it is nearly ineffective. The best use against other players is against archers. As you are running away, peacemake, then continue running. This will make them need to re-target you again, giving you a chance for escape.

Note: It has been rumored that you need to be in combat to use this skill, this is not true. This skill can be used anywhere at anytime for skill gains.

Discordance:

This skill applies attribute and skill loss to the target creature. The percentage of attribute and skill loss is scaled on the bard's Discordance skill. At 50.0 skill, the target loses 12.5% from all stats and skills; and at 100.0 skill the target loses 25% from all stats and skills. Subject to standard rules, the target will regain lost stats and skills once the effect ends. Note that the creature's barding difficulty rating does not change as a result of stat and skill modifying effects of any sort, so using Discordance against a creature does not make it easier to Provoke. This skill cannot target player characters. It can target player pets in Felucca, subject to normal flagging rules.

Note: Every use of one of the above three skills does two skill checks, the skill and your Musicianship ability. So if you have 50 in Musicianship and 50 in Peacemaking, you will have roughly a 25% chance of success. A 100 in Musicianship and a 80 in Provocation will give you roughly an 80% chance of success.

In closing:

The Bard has free reign over all of Sosaria. Armed with only an instrument, a Bard can stroll into Destard and begin to provoke drakes and dragons to fight each other; wander into Shame and make the Earth Elementals do battle with themselves. Ever wonder if two brown bears could kill a grizzly? With a Bard you can find out. See that murderer over there? Send a couple of Wisps after him and watch him run.

Good luck and play well,

Clarke, Master Bard

Role playing a Bard, by Cherveny; Edited by Xena Dragon

Now there are many who play bards in our realm, but how many know how to role play the part well? Well, in this essay I hope to give you some pointers from what I have learned both playing a bard, as well as being a guildmaster of a guild of bards (Songsmiths of Sosaria in Chesapeake).

First, one question that comes up a lot. Should bards ONLY use their musical skills. Of course not! The bards of our land have always been a bit of jack of all trades. Some skills that go with barding traditionally follow:

Magery: Bards have always been known for knowledge of a little magic. Magic is often used to help the bard, help to innocent, and, of course, add to special effects for concerts and storytelling.
Archery: As bards are generally not too strong, bows are often the weapon of choice. Plus, as bards tend to be quick with their hands, they can often get off many a shot, then run from their attacker, then line up for yet another shot.
Bowcraft: Iolo, one of Sosaria's greatest known bards was a bow craftsman. Also it is handy to make your own weapons.
Animal Taming: Bards often have been almost like partial rangers, often preferring the quiet of the woods to the hustle and bustle of city life, although he/she never shies away from an open tavern. :)
Theft: Bards have often been known as a bit of a roguish sort. Just try not to be one of the thieves that steals from people down on their luck, or a rune/key thief, as most people (myself included) hate this kind of thief.

Now, how about music skills. Well, the first thing to do is set up a few simple macros, one like [*strums lute* then Use last object] to set up you playing your instrument. Another I like is *tunes lute* to be used after an unsuccessful use of your instrument. Now, the next, add macros for your basic bardic skills, such as [*plays a peaceful melody*, useskill Peacemaking]. Having these basic macros set up will then allow people to know what you are truly doing, plus add a little hint of realism.

The main goal of the bard is, of course, to sing! Now, how does one sing in UO do you ask? Quite simple. First, come up with the text to your song, and save it as a text file. Possible subjects to use are hunting trips that had an interesting occurrence, quest events, or dungeon trips. Now, when you are ready to sing your song, put UO in windowed mode. Next open up notepad in a window sized to fit right beneath your UO window. Then, from here, you can effectively read your song quite easily for the singing. Now, there are two methods for singing, either type the song in real time (preferred), or macro the song (for the slow typer). Typing the song is pretty straight forward so I won't go in detail on how to do that. For macroing a song, you just set up "Say" macros, one for each line of your song. If you use macros here, it is very easy to go too fast. In order to prevent this, once you hit the macro for each line, read through it yourself, that way you will know your audience has had a chance to keep up with your song.

Now, while you sing it is good to strum your instrument a few times during the song. I find it works well playing the instrument once at the very beginning of the song, then to play it after/during every second line, especially for 4 line verse songs. This way people do not get too annoyed by the sound of the instrument, but still have some instrument sound with your song, a compromise. Then at the end of your song, I usually have a macro that says *Plays a final chord*, then bow. This helps people know when to clap, and when the song is over.

A big problem for singing bards is to find a good place to sing, with an attentive audience. Many people think there is no one out there that has the patience for a bard's song, but trust me, they are out there. I have found that even a number of non Role Players will be impressed by a bard's song, a few even get the idea that you CAN role play in UO. Just do not get discouraged by spammers, thieves and the like as you WILL run into many of them, but if you just continue your songs ignoring their efforts at disruption, they do leave as they realize they are not getting any attention. Another thing to consider is to make sure you hold your concert in an isolated place rather in the middle of a road or major path. This will both help make sure you will not be disrupted, but also, that you are not disrupting others.

Also, for those of you that have problems finding things to sing about, or are just bad poets, try looking for a book of Madrigals. I find these work well in the context of UO. Another possibility is poetry, as poetry and music are actually quite close in design. Also, to get more ideas for songs, try walking the world to get to places instead of using magic to get everywhere, as often, the journey is half the story! Well, I hope these hints help you role play a bard. They can be fun characters to play, and singing for people can be quite fun. Just do not lose hope if your first few concerts seem a bit disrupted, as eventually you will find an audience that appreciates you.

Respectfully,
Cherveny, the atonal bard Lord of the Music

Barding & Taming, by Elron; Edited by Xena Dragon

Greetings I'd just like to add some input on the Barding and Taming skill.

It is very possible to tame dragons as a solo tamer, but it is ever more helpful to have a bard companion and possibly apprentice tamer.

The bard shall need at least 72 peacemaking and 70 provocation. Possibly Discordance but I have not used that skill yet as my Bard.

The bards main goal is to distract the drake/dragon from the tamer. if there are enemies in range, provoke them to attack the dragon. Most preferably a water elemental that is trapped in the lake unable to physically touch the dragon. This is best as the tamer will hopefully be ignored as the dragon tries to attack the other monster. Being near a shrine is also helpful. The peacemaking skill is a good way to temporarily pacify the mighty beast long enough to make a taming attempt. Once taming commences the dragon usually does not attack. After the dragon is tamed you may need to use the peacemaking skill to keep the dragon in check as the taming is not complete.

Dragons are still wild and need to be made loyal, as they'll often at most wander off to attack other monsters/players. This may at sometimes be very amusing as you are trying to flee the dungeon. Once in a safe place make sure to keep commanding the pet. the more successful commands given the more loyal and "happy" the pet gets. try to avoid friending the dragon to another player as it then seems to need to be commanded by both people and seems to go wild faster. Only transfer the dragon.

All this said dragon taming can be fun but requires a lot of patience as it is very tough and you'll spend many trips to the local shrine or friendly mage healer. At 96 skill you can tame a drake in about 5 "successful" taming attempts, the other attempts anger the beast and you cannot continue.

Well happy Taming and may the sacred shrines keep resurrecting your soul.

Elron the Bard / Hopeful Dragon Tamer.
