| Cooking is one of the best professions
to begin with and make money. However I would say that it is the best because
of the fact that it raises your skill so greatly. It hikes up Dex and Int
tremendously and the cooking skill goes up fast. It is also a real life
skill which can truly help you in the game.
Step one is creating your character. Start with 60/10/10 (Str/Dex/Int)
because dough is really heavy and you need as much carrying ability as
you can get. As starting skills take 50 cooking and do what you want with
the other 50. I chose 50 cooking and 50 alchemy. As a starting city I
would choose Britain: the Sweet Dreams Inn. You should start with a bag
of flour and one or two pitchers of water.
Step two is to secure yourself as a good chef. Even with a cooking skill
of 50 you will still fail a great deal more than you would like to so
the first thing that you want to do is get that skill up. with your first
gold go to the baker and buy as many bags of flour as you can. After you
have done that proceed to the nearest place where you can get fresh water.
If you started in Britain like I told you to, it is the troughs outside
the bucking horse stables (the stables adjacent to the mage guild.) Open
a bag of flour. Create a macro Last Object and hiding (or spirit speak
if you want Int) on the F1 key and double click on your pitcher of water
and use it on the flour.
Do this five times and them fill the pitcher from the trough. Each bag
will yield 20 flour. Repeat the process until you are almost overloaded
and walk to the bakery. Cook the food in the oven because your success
rate is far higher there than with campfires. Once you have cooked all
the bread sell it to the baker (3-4 gp price) and repeat (someday the
people at OSI are going to be nice guys and make dough stackable, thus
allowing you to use last object to cook or even allow you to cook the
dough all at once).
Also as the importance of eating becomes greater, a great deal more people
are buying food. Offer your bread to PCs for 5 gp which is a 3-4 reduction
from the bakers price. This almost doubles your profit.
Once you are a good chef, buy some honey and begin making cakes. It takes
a great deal of time more but it raises your skill like nuts.
However the ROI of cooking compared to something like tailoring is not
that good. However cooking raises Dex and Int sky high and is a great
skill for improving your character. Plus you can cook food for yourself
for when you adventure. The only thing that this skill does not raise
is strength so if you are a warrior than you may want to consider another
trade.
