I have seen an overwhelming amount of people recently who can no longer enter their house or boat after a recent death in which they have just lost their final boat or house key. This situation can easily be avoided by following one simple rule:

NEVER TAKE YOUR ORIGINAL HOUSE OR BOAT KEY OUT OF YOUR BANK

Please forgive my shouting that. It is not meant to be yelling. It was shouted to get everyone's attention. I can not stress this issue enough. If you lose your original house or boat key, several problems will arise for you. First being that you will not be able to enter your house. Second, is that the GMs can not and will not create new keys for you. Third, is that a GM can not locate your boat if it is lost without having your original boat key to find it's matching boat (it is impossible).

You can easily make copies of the keys using some blank keys which can be obtained from your local Provisioner or Tinkerer. You may fail several times and destroy some of the blank keys (make sure that you buy several), but it is essencial that you make these copies of the original keys to avoid ever losing access to your hard earned boat or house. This also avoids the hardship of your calling a GM or Counselor, just to find out this exact same information.

I hope that many people will use this valuable knowledge. Nothing pains me more than to have to go to someone and deliver the bad news that their hard earned house or boat is lost forever and will decay in time.

Houses do have an advantage over boats in this situation in one perspective. The original owner of the house can still transfer house ownership to someone from outside the house which will create a new set of keys. You just must have total trust that the "friend" will not run off with the house ownership, and that he/she will transfer it back to you in good faith.

Use this knowledge to your advantage. It is much harder to purchase and place a new house or boat for something that can be avoided by spending a hundred gold on blanks and creating copies of your original keys.
