Shelby pens first public works!

It would seem the heir to Clainin's legacy, Shelby, has compiled both the report filed by Captain of the Royal Guard, Kaden Marsten and forwarded the personal notes of Clainin himself! This new manuscript,Observations of the Shard, a Chronicle of the Remains of the Gem of Immortality, can be found on the floor of Castle British's main hall, and includes some of our Royal Thaumaturgist's own notations. Enjoy your reading, Sosaria Prevails.

Interview with an Event Moderator: Kanmare Edition

Who are the different characters that you play and how do they
connect with each other?

I have three characters that I play, although only two are known at this time. Corastine Evanir is a Priestess of Truth. She was trained in Luna and now resides in the Hall in Britain.
Barra Linath is an exile of Heartwood and a drow elf. She lives in Buc's Den in Felucca, although she is also seen around Zento as she was trained by the ninja there. She knows Kaden Marsden and dislikes him intensely.
Both of their character histories have been posted previously on stratics :) We were asked to give you an idea of who they were *smiles*

Can we bribe you to blow up Luna? If yes, will 3000M gold
suffice?

hehe I am well aware of everyone wanting Luna blown up! We will have to speak to Mesanna I think.. dev's have all the power *grins*
as to the bribe.. sorry - totally incorruptible. Although more than happy to do so free of charge!

Tomas is a well-known Elf hater. What is your opinion of the
Elven kind? Do you find their ears too pointy as well?

Well I play one..
My only problem with elves is how they fit into Ultima... I like the sound of the gargoyles from SA better to be honest. Now if we could have dragons as a player race life would be perfect hehe *thinks she will be dreaming that one for a long time to come*

Are you versed with the history of Atlantic? Can we expect to
see any attempts to at least acknowledge, if not rejuvenate, some of the
things long lost?
If so, can you share some details?

The first thing I did when I found out I was assigned to Atlantic was read as much as I could of the shard history :) As soon as I was allowed out of the hall I also went to visit many of the old seer built places. I would like to acknowledge that Atlantic has a full and rich history (it is the oldest shard after all) and I would be happy to work with you to rejuvenate anything you would like to see come back to life. I approach this with caution however, as I also have a great deal of respect for that past and would have it preserved in the spirit it was intended to be if that makes sense. I am open to suggestions as to how I can help in this regard. My email is at the bottom of this post.

Like with seers on Asian shards, can we expect to see a drive
by you to bring players back to West Britain Bank?

I would say that it is not up to me where people choose to be.. I am happy to encourage a greater presence at WBB if people would like me to :) I have a few ideas how this could be achieved *grins*

What is your home shard, and what do you think of atlantic's
community?

I can't answer the home shard one.. *remains shrouded in mystery*
Atlantic as a community I find to be vital and strong. I have found everyone to be more than helpful and also very welcoming :) My thanks to everyone for their assistance settling into my new home *smiles*

How long in general have you played Ultima Online?
A long time.. ten years now.

Have you ever played any of the older Ultima Games?
Aye I have :) I have also been a member of UDIC for some years now ;)
Cear: Me too! Im Armageddon Dragon and Cear Dragon on the roster.

What do you think of your job as Event Moderator. Easy? Hard?
Fun to do?

I love EMing *grins* I would very gladly make it a full time occupation if I could. It is easy sometimes.. hard sometimes and always fun :) I like how it keeps you thinking on your feet. The thing about roleplay is it is spontaneous.. you never know what people are going to respond with and how you need to react. I have changed a whole event (mid flight so to speak) based on a stray comment from someone that triggered off an idea that was better than the one we were running with. For a small example.. Bob, Casca's herald was telling people he had to go to Fel for the speech on Sunday and was told that bad things happen there. So for the Fel speech he gained a suit of borrowed rusty armor and trembled (clanking noisily I might add) every time someone spoke to him. Also many of the plot kind of things I like to write I plan for several outcomes and players dictate which one happens based on what they do in the story.

Will we ever see one of you two play a darker role?
Of course. The best roleplay has to have conflict.

Any insight you can give as to what the EM program will bring
in the future?

The future.. well.. hmm.. the limit is what we can come up with - thats us as a team and your ideas and input as well. You are more than welcome to email me if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions: kanmare@uoem.net.

What is your favorite Ultima Lore subject? Why?
I always liked Stones..anyone who can play so well has my vote ;) I am a sucker for a good story.
Cear: I play it on a 12 string :)

Do you believe you embody any particular Virtue System Virtue?
I love the Virtues as a system but people are pretty complex individuals.. there is something of all of them in us and something of their opposites as well. While I would like to say I embody the Virtues.. as I do try to be a good person.. I would hesitate to proclaim myself a master in any of them.

Do you have a particular liking to any items or clothing in Ultima?
Well I do have a particular fondness for verite plate with close helm, slightly darker green cloak.. but I am biased ;) Someone special to me wears that kind of outfit *grins*

Favorite city and why.
Moonglow was always my hang out of choice :) I am not sure exactly why..I did have a small house on the coast on my play shard at one stage (not now).

Favorite Facet and why.
I still have to say Felucca.. I am not (nor ever have been) the best pvper in the world.. but I always preferred living in Fel. Mostly because we can dispense our own Justice there.. or at least try to hehe. I am good enough to hunt the kind of noobs who would hunt defenseless miners.

What would you like to see introduced to UO?
I am currently very much looking forward to the SA expansion. With our contact to the dev team, I can very honestly say I have a much better understanding of how much work it takes to make these expansions and a very great respect for the work they do.

Which do you prefer, Order or Chaos?
Order.. although I work more with managing Chaos *grins*

What are their favorite Character to play when they play UO on their normal time.

My favorite would have to be the eldest. She is a smith, who always wanted to be a paladin.. according to her history, she grew up in Minoc, eldest daughter (family of five naturally) of a miner. She was the son he never had and he passed on all the secrets of his trade to her. When she was in her mid to late teens, her parents were killed by an invasion leaving her to raise her sisters. When they were old enough, she saw them all onto the paths they had chosen then made her own way in the world the best she knew how. She saddled her pack horse and travelled extensively (mined practically every cave in Felucca - I wanted to see the world not hang in Minoc til I GMed). A friend of hers spoke to her of Virtue and service and she joined a guild, becoming their smith and of course a paladin in her own right. In days of old when Knights were bold she was in a guild on Atlantic (long before they were a playing class of course) and later moved on to different climes. Sadly, the guild is no more. They were a wonderful group of people though, who tried very hard to follow the Virtues in life as well as in the game. I have to say I have met the best friends I have in this game *smiles*

Your funniest UO Moment?
This would have been back in 2000 or so. A friend of mine and budding rares collector had found a server birth mushroom on a vendor for the low low price of 60k! Now I don't know if you remember how long that would take to hunt with characters not GMed (with craft skills incorporated into their build) and of course, much less loot than now...We hunted all night, the two of us, with me giggling at the keyboard when I thought about how much effort we were putting in for a mushroom! I also remember him waiting for the few minutes before server down one nervous time.. to find out if it could be eaten or not!

When is Clanins memorial going to be decorated?
It has been started :) The next phase is the statues expansion to include any guilds who wish to donate. Listen for my announcement after the events this weekend :)

Is it possible for you to place teleporters at trammel britain moongate to trammel britain bank?or is that more of a Developer issue?
I will pass that on to Mesanna and see what she says :)

Counterattack on Dungeons Leaves Lingering Questions!

Visions

Historically the dungeons of Covetous, Deceit, Despise, Destard, Hyloth, Shame, Wrong and even Doom have been a place of peril and possibility. Great riches and great pain walked hand in hand within the realm of Ifs and buts, but on this day they were host to a new group of foes.

The events began with a rash of ponderous night terrors the Priestess Coranstine had been suffering from. As the populous is aware it was been a time of turmoil for the for the third estate of Britannia as of late, with the calls of the Crimson Hordes still echoing, and the wounds left from Clainin's end still fresh, it came as no surprise that the visions were but a precursor to more bloodshed, but as the citizens of Britain have time and time again proved, they are more than willing to shed blood.

After the arrival of Kaden Marsten, Captain of the Britanian Guard, and the, if not belated, arrival of Clainin's replacement, Shelly the Novice, it was decided the gathering should make for the Dungeon Doom on the Malas Facet to investigate. The findings were peculiar even for that area, eight nude bodies covered in fresh blood, and a large crystal globe swirling and barking with a foreign energy. A short report to Shelly provided the force with a goal, to investigate each of the traditional Anti Virtue dungeons, and if need be, cleanse them of any odd creatures.

Violence

The gathering made for the Dungeon Covetous where a new threat was encountered. The Spawn of Averice, a ponderous gaunt ethereal figure resembling a mummy. The creature placed a peculiar musical instrument to it's rotting lips and the battle began, after a short exchange the force pulled out, returning to the Castle British.

The following is an account of the battles and creatures encountered during the campaign, for the sake of brevity. Despise, a ponderous ethereal ogre who seemed to have an accord with the ratmen, calling it's self Tainted Love. In the halls of Deceit an odd ethereal lich calling it's self White Lies. In the cavernous dungeon Destard, an ethereal dragon referred too as Coward's Bane. On the Isle of Fire, within Hythloth, a gargish fiend possessing the qualities of a spider claiming to be Pride's Fall. In a return to Covetous, The Spawn of Averice met it's end. In the small corridor of Wrong a peach colored Mystic Llama Herder claiming to be known only as Jury Duty lasted for some hours before finally being brought to justice. Shame hosted the quarrel against an Ethereal Gazer known only as Failed Truth. After yet another return to Shelly the origins of the assault, Doom, acted as host for the climactic battle against an Ethereal Skeletal Dragon deemed Atheist. On returning to the Castle there was only a lantern informing the force to return on the 22nd promptly at Six.

During the battle two mysterious figures made their presence known. A ghostly robed woman who took great distress in the destruction of the creatures, and spoke of a role of servitude to a master. A strange knight wearing an entire plate mail suit commented to appear to have been crafted from the volatile and dangerous substance known as Blackrock, seated atop a dark steed. Perhaps the most entrancing happening of all was the items recovered from the monsters, dark blue crystals that can only be assumed to be receivers matching the transmitters situated outside the dungeons, almost surely linked to the peculiar dark energy surrounding the day's events.

Victory

For every success and answer of the day, a multitude of questions seems to have been spawned. It is the acute hope of this reporter that no loss of life or serious loss of equipment was suffered today, and while the adventures can "safely" delve into the dungeons once more, that a state of caution and vigilance be taken by Britannia as a whole. Goodnight and good luck, Sosaria prevails.

>>> Trammel Facet News <<<Written on a scroll in a practiced, flowing script, the following is delivered to you by a man dressed in brown slacks and with similar colored hair, cropped short since Britannia last saw him.

He bears a purple sash, grandly embellished with "Royal Herald of Britannia" which he fingers every now and then as if absurdly proud of it. "I am instructed" he says, "to see that this message is delivered directly to your hand.

Councilor Shelby requires that it meets the ears and eyes of the populace as soon as is practicable. Serious matters appear to be afoot!" on the scroll, bearing the wax impression of a Council missive, appears the following:

Greetings All Citizens of Britannia.

I write this missive to you, as the duly appointed Royal Thaumaturgist to the Throne of Britannia. In this role, I would like to inform you that I require the presence of all Royal Guards and volunteers of the realm. I have received a troubling report from Corastine that we need to look into with all haste. As all are no doubt aware, Priestess' are somewhat prescient in matters, some of us are merely bystanders to. It seems in this case, that the mysteries are giving her little option but to listen. Her report is enclosed below.

Your servant,
Shelby, Royal Thaumaturgist and Member of the Royal Council.

Report received:

It is the same every night.. please help me sleep or make it go away..I have tried everything.. something is trying to tell me something but apart from being terrified and bone weary I have no idea what is going on.

"It is done." The black knight removed his helmet and glanced around at the eight robed and hooded figures surrounding him, each holding a dark crystal ball. The dead sacrifices needed for their making lay at their feet and each crystal ball gleamed blackly, the hands of the hooded ones covered in their blood. As the blood pooled around their bare feet, they all screamed in unison.. the sound conveying the complete satisfaction and malice of a job complete.

"Now go," he commanded. "Fulfill thine purpose." The eight creatures each said a different word and the crystal balls vanished. Then they bowed to him in one movement and vanished into the rooms dark shadows.

Leaving it a few minutes to be sure the creatures has in fact left him, the knight slumped to the ground in front of the central crystal left behind. These books never told you the price you would pay, he reflected. He hefted the heavy tome and put it inside his pack. He could feel the main crystal start to tingle and then start to grow in strength as each of the eight was activated. Despite the bone crushing weariness, he could not help but feel energized by the power he had created. Let it begin! Finally, years of preparation and practice would come to fruition. Leaving the denizens of the place to clean up the mess, he also vacated the place and returned to the safety of his lair. He had just enough energy to secure the book before he passed out.

As he passes out, I awake screaming! The horror, the pain.. I don't know what to do. I thought you might be able to make a potion? Help me sleep and the dreams go away?

Corastine Evanir, Priestess of Truth.

Meet at Castle British 3 pm EST, Sunday and we will get to the truth of this matter. If you wish to read more - check out the EM Official Website.

Cora has some blog entries and the event schedule and so forth is being posted there. In game announcement will begin soon.

>>> Felucca Facet News <<< I felt a great disturbance in th

I felt a great disturbance in the ether, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

It was Monday, and the sun was falling fast. So it was time to head to the tavern for drink and smoke.
A day of valor and effort in the never ending battle against Mondain's vile creations is at loss without a night
exchanging tales. My horse and I came to a slow trot as we neared Mazewood Tavern. I could see the torch light thru the woods,
but I did not hear the clamor of the crowd, and the clashes of the mugs of ale and mead. As I neared the tavern I heard crying and a came steadily
to a halt. I was still in the thick of the woods, under cover of night. If I needed to retreat and survive I could. But after some time of observation, I could see the threat
was long gone. Only the grieving and the observing were present there. I arrived at horror, spread across the acres. The result of life, death
was predominantly before me. I dragged my feet across the rubble for a good while. exchanging short sentences with the people I saw.
Darrien Church. That ancient lich! Foul and unreasonable...
You see, the owner of the establishment was present and survived.
A few had gathered to speak with her on the third floor of the next building over.
She spoke of the lich, and it's gatherers. There was chanting for some time, a stir of echoes
no one would dare near. As word spread, as it does ever so fast, Sosaria's darker ones began to arrive
at the scene. I made my vague greetings, my slow nods, and soon a moon gate was conjured to allow for a more,
qualified discussion.

As night fell, we spoke of the fallen.
We spoke of the lich.
As much as I wanted to forget what happened,
and head home, to prepare for my day,
and my spell, I stayed. I spoke my mind to egg on
the follies of man. To keep minds occupied, and chaos active.
I may end up playing a larger roll in all of this.

Greetings all,

As some are aware, I have made a start on the Clainin Memorial Gardens using the plants and items donated by the Citizens at the service we held. If you do not see an item you donated do not despair! It is not yet finished *smiles*

Also - should any guilds wish to donate a statue to be labeled and placed (as was done for the HEAT and HOT guilds - note this is only for guilds not individuals), there will be an opportunity to do so at the next trammel and felucca Meet and Greet sessions. The next Felucca one is scheduled for this Friday. There will be a Trammel one soon! Stay Tuned and keep an eye on the schedule. If you are unable to attend those sessions then please email atlantic@uoem.netThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . No one need miss out.

Previous Event: Build A Village
Return to TopSubmit News!
Posted on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, 10:22 AM EDT by Cear Dallben Dragon (Atlantic)

The Syndicate held a series of Community Events this past weekend. They included our weekly Craftsman Day that has been going on once a week, every week for more than a decade.

In addition to that ancient event, two other very fun events occurred.

On Saturday, Syndicate member's Faye and Umeko hosted a

"Build A Village" event. The idea was to bring the community together and create a temporary village out of seemingly random items

and form a virtual community for a couple of hours until things began to rot. The question, "Would this event be something players would enjoy?"

was certainly on our mind before the event began. When all was said and done though, more than 30 players had participated and quite an extensive village was built,

enjoyed and then decayed. There was a tavern, a concert hall and a number of very creative houses and some decorated ruins.

Below are some screenshots of some parts of the village.

On Sunday, The Syndicate held one of its famous Lottery events.

More than 50 players from all over the server were gated in for the free lottery drawing where 25 prizes were given out.

The winners for this round of the lottery were:

Dexter

Zatar

Amorous Vixen

Mairu

Alexander

Labing Tatlina

Captain Anarchy

California

Max

Sir Matthew Hale

Anastasia

Achilles

Cloud Nine

Blink

Lazarus

Calvin Klein

Blood Runner

Anzha

Dawg of War

Dinurth

Aurora Boralis

Zumies

Kat

Nokittymypotpie

And

White Fluff

Prizes included power scrolls of all shapes and sizes (grouped into bags for different character templates), artifacts, rares and checks of a

million gold among other things. Thank you to all who came!

Look for more of these events coming soon! And if you would like to participate

in Craftsman Day it is every SUNDAY at 4pm EST. You can find Syndicate gaters at the major banks.

You will know them by the LLTS abbreviation over their heads and the blue robes that they wear. As always CD is a free event and open to all.

Interview with an Event Moderator: Vytacca Edition

What is your favorite Ultima Lore character? Why?

Ultima lore on its own, there are a lot of characters who were all pretty cool.
Intermingling with UO lore, maybe Jaana because in Ultima 7 she had that cute hawk
as a weapon! But in terms of overall "Ultima" lore, the Avatar has to be my
favorite, because he is me!

Do you believe you embody any particular Virtue System Virtue?
In line with the previous answer, I'd say probably not; I think many people who
carried over from the original Ultima games to UO kept the Avatar frame of mind and
would consider themselves to encompass them all.

Favorite city and why.
Hmm I think, visually, Occlo, because it reminds me of when I was new! I loved old
haven.. even though it was all re-arranged a bit from the Felucca counterpart.
Britain definitely had more appeal to me at the time but you only really miss
something after its gone. Like old Haven!

Favorite Facet and why.
Trammel! I'd say Felucca for the history aspect, but Trammel looks nicer by default
and you don't get your Easter eggs stolen from your pack. Good old Britannia, with
leaves on the trees!

What would you like to see introduced to UO?
Like to see introduced to UO? More players, to play the cheese race! Ok really, hmm
well when I started as a newbie, I noticed the lack of "Paws". That might be a fun
work-in, in-line with the progression of world fiction. Not much, but then again
I'm not that fussy about additions to the game.
Cear: I totally agree! I was really hoping that after disease wracked Yew they would make
Paws and exile all of the sick people there.

Which do you prefer, Order or Chaos?
Order. Nicer shield.

What are their favorite Character to play when they play UO on their normal time
Trammie dexer.

Their funniest UO Moment
Hmm hard to answer with any of the "good" stories without revealing anything about who I am.. but one of
the more memorable times was on a regular test shard, where I was around Brit
graveyard as a character in Fel who was perhaps slightly inappropriately named.
Anyway, after I got killed, somehow, I had got renamed to "bunny", instead of my
tough-guy name that I had before.

When is Clanins memorial going to be decorated?
Good question, soon hopefully! All donated items will be put around the memorial,
and there were quite a lot donated...

Is it possible for you to place teleporter at trammel Britain moongate to trammel Britain bank?
or is that more of a Developer issue?
More of a developer issue. We could place gates, but it would only be temporary and
they would have to have an event-related reason for existing. Hopefully people will
already have re-instated their default location as "Brit Bank" for their runebooks,
instead of Luna bank, with the new drive to get people back to Britain on Atlantic!

Who are the different characters that you play and how do they connect with each other?
Kaden Marsten and the Cheesemaker. Interaction? Not sure, though if
Kaden meets Barra, he doesn't like her.

Can we bribe you to blow up Luna? If yes, will 3000M gold suffice?
I'd do it for free!

Tomas is a well-known Elf hater. What is your opinion of the Elven kind? Do you find their ears too pointy as well?
Heresy! May Casca find Tomas and have an example made of him! On a side note, Kaden
doesn't like drow in general. So that's sort of elven. But not really.

Are you versed with the history of Atlantic? Can we expect to see any attempts to at least acknowledge, if not rejuvenate, some of the things long lost?
Hard to really answer this one, though it would be easy to say "Yes", "maybe", "not really"

If so, can you share some details?
I'd like to. The races are a good start but there tends to be a lot of players AFK. The cheese races are *near* the bank but not close enough to promote a "come back to Brit!" drive

What is your home shard, and what do you think of Atlantic's community?
No comment on the home shard, but Atlantic does have a great community with a nice
mix of RPers and PvPers thrown in. Take Clainin's memorial and the Tome of Love
events for instance; we asked players to line up and.. they did! Its great to work
with players who are so cooperative

How long in general have you played Ultima Online?
About 9ish years now. Started just after UO ren or so. Had the old T2A box at the
time, though, meaning that when I *did* get a PC with a CD drive, I was still
assuming that people could steal from you and that you only had 100 gold when you
started.

Have you ever played any of the older Ultima Games?
played them all (savage empire/Martian dreams included), with the exception of 2
and 3 which I never played properly. The first one I played was Ultima 7, which is
still my favorite.

What do you think of your job as Event Moderator. Easy? Hard? Fun to do?
Its great! Definitely an opportunity I would recommend anyone take up if they
had the chance to. I wouldn't say its hard as such but it can be demanding at
times. But its fun to get the chance to be someone who makes events rather than
attends them, for once.

Will we ever see one of you two play a darker role?
Barra is definitely a dark role. Darker? Maybe. Who knows!

Will the contract killing event that began in Tokuno pick up again?
Regularity I think is about a month. It has been a bit on-and-off, but hopefully it
will run regularly, every month.

Any insight you can give as to what the EM program will bring in the future?
More events! No, I can't really comment on this one.

Vendui Elggur,

It is unfortunate I must resort to this barbaric tongue *sigh* It has no nuances of tone or inflection.

I have a proposal for you.

It is true I am recruiting for my organisation.

It is also true that I will have a force very adept at hunting down those who require assassination...

BUT

I also require a special force.  The renor kyorl you shall be known as. The Black Guard. It is no secret I have no liking for that yeunn ma'lai Kaden Marsden. It is you who will seek an opportunity to do something permanent about the good Captain. I may have more for you in the future.

For now.. watch, wait and seek your opportunity. Like a spider in the shadows. So shall you strike!

As to the recruitment..

There are three different tests I will offer. You shall not know which is coming, so you will be ready for all three. The type of test you will know by the spiders you see at the secret location we will go to.

A frost spider

These from the North will indicate the competition will be a "Grand Melee". One in, all in. Last one standing alive will be the winner of the day and my newest recruit. Or have earned further favour if they have won before, of course.  Dro'xundus de'lil alurl so they say. "Survival of the fittest".

A giant black widow

These will indicate an individual competition, a duel to the death in rounds. The winner each round goes through to the next. All have only one chance. Noa lueth tlu zet rathrea "Lose and be left behind". A stone wall will mark the start of the rounds. There will be no interference from the crowd, or disruption of those fighting or among the watchers. If there should be you will not be welcome back or ever be admitted to my ranks. I need no trouble from you.

a dread spider

Finally, these will indicate the competition will be pairs. You and a partner of your choice will fight another pair. In order to win, both of them should be dead, both of you standing alive. Simple, but more difficult. Again, I will tolerate no disruption from the crowd amongst yourselves or towards those in the fight. A stone wall will again denote the start. I will be less impressed should one be resurrecting the other at the end. The goal is to keep each other alive and see your opponents are killed. Ul'naus udos sslig'ne "Together we defend".

When the spiders have been defeated, the competition above can commence.

Hi there!

Just to let you know that the next cheese race will still be taking place this
Friday at the same time of 6pm EST in the paddock outside of West Britain. The
rules have changed slightly, see below. Emphasis on the new change to the rule -
you have to go to the end and then back, instead of just the end.

Unfortunately, Kanmare and myself have been busy these last couple of weeks, but
we hope to be making a more regular appearance soon, starting with the cheese
race on Friday!

So here are the revised rules. Copies of the book are at West Britain Bank, the
Britain community collection library, the counselor's guild hall and at the
paddock.

Aim

The aim of the race is to roll [drag and drop] the cheese from the start of the
course to the table at the end and then back to the starting marker, once
told to start the race. The first person to place their cheese on the table
and get back to the start with their cheese wins that round
. After each
round, first and second places will be recorded. After the third player has got
their cheese to the end of the track, the race will end within 5 seconds.

In order to win the race, the player's cheese must be placed on the table and
then be taken back to the start and placed on top of the colored log.

Players in second place will only partake in the finals if there is a low
turnout of participants -or- if first place does not attend the final (or has
been disqualified, see “disqualification”)

Winners from each round will compete in a final, where the winner’s name will be
put on a cheese, to be displayed at the event hall (and on the field for a
month)

Disqualification

Players will be disqualified from a race, or the finals, if:

They are observed to be running while holding a cheese.

They are found to disrupt the other contestants during a race (this includes
spamming at the bottom of the screen)

They are found to have taken or dragged a cheese, either their own or that of
another contestant, outside the designated race track while any race is in
progress

Abusive, vulgar or hateful behavior toward other players or the cheesemaker!

Please note that disruptive behavior, even from non-participants, will not be
tolerated. So don't do it!

Oh and I know I have to do the interview questions still. Sorry about that! But
like I said, we've been pretty busy :D

  • 10th rank winner = 20M gold
  • 15th rank winner = 10M gold

Guild/Alliance contest rewards
  • 1st place winner = 30M gold - will be rewarded to alliance leader.
  • The winning guild/alliance members will receive an additional benefit such that if any of its members are within +/- 5 range of 80th percentile rank, then they will win the Royal Guard Investigator prize.
  • The second guild/alliance members will receive an additional benefit such that if any of its members are within +/- 4 range of 80th percentile rank, then they will win the Royal Guard Investigator prize.
  • The third guild/alliance members will receive an additional benefit such that if any of its members are within +/- 3 range of 80th percentile rank, then they will win the Royal Guard Investigator prize. Members of higher ranked guild will have precedent.

Anyone wishing to donate gold towards the purse, please send me a PM.

Contest Rules

So, how will this contest actually work - you might be wondering? Well, it is fairly straight forward:

During the four week period, I will be randomly visiting West Britain Bank at different times during the day. At this point, I will do all names and take a screen shot around the bank. Points will be rewarded based on your presence, as follows:

Individual points
  1. If your name is present in the screen shot, you will get one point and an entry will be made for your character in my logs.
  2. If you have text over your head (implying that you are actually present), you will get an additional point.
  3. If you are gating to some place in the screen shot, you will get an additional point.
  4. If you are providing services of Pet Resurrection, you will get an additional point.

At the end of the contest, all the points will be summed up to the best of my ability.

Guild/Alliance points
Along with player names, there will be a compilation of points for guilds. All guilds that are part of the same alliance will count as a same entity unless a guild specifically requests to opt out. The guild/alliance score will be calculated by summing up the number of points earned by each member.

At end of the 4 week period, I will compile the points.. at which point the winners will receive the rewards.

Additional Notes
  1. It is recommended that you have your guild tag on, if you are in a guild.
  2. It is recommended that you make up a random guild and keep your guild tag on, if you are not in a guild.
  3. There is definitely chance for error in the format.. but.. OH WELL!
  4. Yes, you can get a point for being AFK. I encourage people to go AFK at Brit bank.. It is the best way to win some of the rewards!
  5. I will be visiting at all times of day.. even in middle of night.. (points to note #4)
  6. Attempts at being seriously cheeky could qualify you for a disqualification.
  7. If you are concerned about your identity being stolen, then see note #1 and #2.

Sponsorship/Feedback/Assistance

If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to make them in this thread. Random whines are welcome too as it will bump the post!

As indicated earlier, if anyone wants to donate gold (not looking for anything else) to make this even more attractive.. my ICQ is in my signature. If you don't have any gold but would like to still help then spam Luna Bank with books of this contest or gate to WBB from Luna bank during this period.

*This event is sponsored by Columbus Atlantic Player Event Fund*

Other Charity Donations (so far):
  1. Vladimir will drop at least 20M+ gold in checks during the 4 weeks at random times.
  2. Athelas (Treasure Trove Mall) is donating 20M gold towards the final prize
  3. Anonymous donation made of 2M gold (Added to 15th list reward)

Update Center
  1. Updated rewards.
  2. Updated rule regarding guilds to reflect Alliances.
  3. Changed the post to make it easier to read.
  4. Added a new reward for Guild contest.
  5. Royal Guard Investigator reward bracket is tuned a little bit to be more flexible as I have no idea what the turnout will be like.
  6. Further incentives for guild/alliance participation.
  7. Added pet resurrection bonus.

UO Essay: Falling Trees

Falling Trees

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Ultima Online is a big world, containing a myriad of virtual objects of every type and description. Animals, monsters, people, plants, and yes, trees too, all abound over nearly seventy million square meters of territory that exists merely as a figment of data in some server's RAM, dutifully backed up on a daily basis.

If UO is a persistent world, does everything keep going, even when players aren't there?

The short answer is: no, unfortunately not. A somewhat commonly known thing amongst our playerbase, for instance, is that mobiles (any dynamic object that can move: animals, monsters, NPCs) don't move when players aren't nearby. This "sleep" behavior was implemented some time ago in order to combat wasted CPU time that bogged down performance for the rest of the game.

The behavior itself is very simple to understand. Every mobile has its own basic AI loop that executes, sets a short delay, and starts over again. This allows every mobile to evaluate its current situation and respond to it, and then turn control of the CPU back over to the rest of the game.

In fact, these loops are very short, and we call them ticks or heartbeats. Rather than give every single object in the game its own individual share of the CPU, we have a main thread that runs as a loop as well, which gives short amounts of time to each object on an as needed basis.

Now, imagine a normal server, like Atlantic. There are over sixty thousand mobiles up and running, all potentially handling their AI loops at any given time. If every mobile tried to execute all the conditions and possibilities available to it, the game would take a gigantic hit in performance. Even worse, imagine if every mobile wanted to actually move.

And so, instead, if players aren’t within a certain distance, those mobiles just go to sleep, waiting for their time to shine.

This became a problem, though, while we were working on the Stygian Abyss expansion.

We wanted to do something we thought would be relatively simple. One of the newer dungeon levels has a series of tombs, each blocked by a gate, hooked to a lever in another room. When the lever is pulled, it should open the gate, releasing the monsters inside.

Now, normally, that means we just send a message to each monster saying "move down the corridor and get ready to meet the player in the main hallway."

So we pulled all the levers, eager to see the suddenly full hallway, and to our surprise, found the hallway quite empty. At least, for a moment! Suddenly the monsters came streaming from left and right, coming out of the tombs, now that someone was there to see them.

Even though we knew about the "sleep" mode for mobiles, we thought we could override it just by directly sending commands to them. This had worked in many other game systems added for live events, such as Sherry the Mouse, an NPC who had a full daily schedule of running around the castle, eating lunch in the kitchen, popping through mouseholes, and generally being cute.

It turns out, we were wrong! The only reason Sherry worked at all when players weren't around was because she could teleport when her movement checks failed, a failsafe originally designed to deal with griefers trying to trap her in the corner.

Ultimately, our resolution is a simple one: we've designed a flag that allows some mobiles to avoid the sleep system, which will be implemented in the new expansion. From here on out, parts of the world will come to life more than ever before, existing and evolving apart from the comings and goings of the average observer.

And while we may not be able to hear a tree chopped down in the woods, and least we know a horde of undead Gargoyles won't be standing idly by when you raid their tombs!

UO Essay: Form Follows Function

Form Follows Function

When we shipped the original Kingdom Reborn client it featured a completely redone map. There was a new waypoint system, icons for locations, and an overhauled look and feel. In fact, you could say the "new look" was more of a "ye olde looke" straight out of the Age of Discovery. A yellowed parchment with faded colors, crinkled edges – far more realistic as a "map" than the old UO way of doing things.

Unlike the 15th century Europeans, however, our own explorers quickly discovered that this absolutely gorgeous remake of our old map was mostly useless. In fact, the parchment version essentially diluted the critical detail that the Legacy client offered, combining large swaths of terrain into abstract blotches of mute hues, rendering distant obstacles and paths invisible.

So much time was spent on the new look and new functionality that when we finally shipped KR, well, the map wasn't even as functional as the Legacy version.

Where the older client would overlay player houses and other objects on top of the map, the KR version couldn't. Then again, it would've looked horrible for the housing art to be dropped atop the beautiful hand-drawn look of the map, so it became a cut feature, amongst several others.

For Stygian Abyss, we approached it from the opposite direction. Much of the unnecessary fluff was pulled out, and we replaced the map with the same kind you'd expect in Legacy – a full bird’s eye view of what's actually in the game, and redesigned the look of the map around how it should be used.

Our lesson learned was that in KR, we tried to make the functionality match the new look (often by cutting features), without success. In SA, we’ve done the opposite, letting the form follow the actual functions the players need.

Thankfully, the engineers have pulled off miracles to get this done, delivering a map system for SA that's actually a complement and improvement over the old one. The artists, too, integrated the result beautifully into the UI. Now it works like Legacy, but has a full Atlas mode (finally giving our players a way to see the whole map without using a 3rd party app). It's even rotated correctly (at a tilt) by default!

Some might miss the parchment look and feel of the KR version - that's understandable. Yet given the choice between the Google Maps of UO, versus a pretty piece of parchment, we wanted to err on the side of giving players more freedom.

The Monthly Atlantic Cheese Race!

The Monthly Atlantic Cheese Race!

Here's one for the months to come - each month we will be running a cheese race (crazy huh!) - the location is the Paddock just above the fair ground area outside West Brit - coordinates are (1310 1805). Inspired by an annual event held in the UK, whereby participants have to chase rolling wheels of cheese down a hill, participants will attempt to carry a weighted cheese with their name on from a start point to the finish. Every third Friday of the month starting with this Friday (April 17th), at 6pm EST, the Monthly Atlantic Cheese Race will be held at the paddock between the blacksmiths and the stables to the west of Britain. The race consists of several elimination rounds and then a final round. In each race, up to 6 participants will race and have their own cheese, which they must drag from the starting point to the end. The first person to get to the end, wins the round. The winner from each round will go through to the finals, although if there is huge interest, further elimination rounds will be implemented. The winner of the finals will have their name added to a cheese and put into the reward house, in Malas. All winners cheeses will be displayed, however only the current winner will have their cheese on display. Please remember not to disrupt the event - if you don't like how the event is being run or held, you are more than welcome to voice your opinions here on stratics; but don't disrespect the other participants! If you want to take part or simply spectate, you are kindly asked to not go inside the pen area. The rules are stated in and outside of the race area, but for reference, here they are!

Aim
The aim of the race is to roll [drag and drop] the cheese from the start of the field to the end, once players have been told to start the race. The first person to the end wins that round. After each round, first and second places will be recorded. After the third player has got their cheese to the end of the track, the race will end within 5 seconds. Players in second place will only partake in the finals if there is a low turnout of participants –or– if first place does not attend the final (or has been disqualified, see “disqualification”) Winners from each round will compete in a final, where the winner’s name will be put on a cheese, to be displayed at the event hall (and on the field for a month)

Disqualification
Players will be disqualified from a race, or the finals, if:

  • They are observed to be running while holding a cheese
  • They are found to disrupt the other contestants during a race (this includes spamming at the bottom of the screen)
  • They are found to have taken or dragged a cheese, either their own or that of another contestant, outside the designated race track while any race is in progress
  • Abusive, vulgar or hateful behavior toward other players or the cheesemaker!
  • Please note that disruptive behavior, even from non-participants, will not be tolerated. So don't do it!

Finally, please bear in mind that this race is the opening race, meaning that things may well not go exactly as planned. All that we ask is that you bear with us and try not to be disruptive or abusive. Remember, this is monthly, so if you can't make it, you can always try next month!

A Question Of Kings
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Monday, April 13, 2009, 7:33 PM EDT by Cear Dallben Dragon (Atlantic)

Cear Dallben sat as he almost always does, within the confines of his laboratory. He was wondering of this King Casca madness.
He had been reading a copy of the Royal Decree he stole from Skara Brae's bank wall. There were two lines that Dallben was certian,
needed elaboration.

I, thy narrator, will explain.
Line five, the decree states:  as King pro-tempore
That alone is interesting to Dallben. Who would self proclaim themselves
as a temporary King? Does he know his days are numbered? If so,
Who numbered them?

Line Eight, the decree states: our once and future king.
To imply that Lord British will return and rule Britannia once again
surely cannot simply be alluded to! Can it?

What does this elf king know?
What exactly is going on behind those curtains in castle British?
Surely if someone worthy of assassinating were to come around.
Cear should know...

After a short visit to Castle Blackthorn, what could be considered kidnapping,
and forced ingestion of an odd concoction, Dallben extracted what he considered
to be most valuable information.

Casca has been playing chess with a stranger who sends his moves
by messenger bird!

There are countless tales of British's chess habits.
Games between the old king and his friend and adversary Blackthorn
were rumored to go on for years.
Will Britannia see its founder again?
Or will chaos and entropy sink its fangs into the realm,

Devolving the world back to Akalabeth.

[NEWS] Kaden Marsten ~ A Simple Man From Moonglow...
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Thursday, April 9, 2009, 11:29 AM EDT by Andrasta (Atlantic)
Kaden flung the door to his shack open and threw his hunting sack down on the table. Barely bigger than a prison cell, and less inviting than any dungeon in Britannia, many people would have been hard pressed to have lived in such a place. But Kaden was oblivious to such qualities. To him, all he saw was that this place was quiet – and quiet meant no people.

Kaden wasn’t one for socialising much – he had kept to himself for many years; hunting various animals and, on occasion, the odd miscreant, usually elven, who had the misfortune to cross his path. He sat down at the table, kicked his boots off, and opened the leather sack in front of him.

It was then that he noticed a letter that had been left on the table, addressed to him. Curious; it had the emblem of the Royal Council embedded into the seal. Kaden opened the letter, and laid it out on the table as he sorted through the contents of the sack.

Mr Marsten,

With the recent, and unfortunate, deaths of the Council, there have opened up a number of positions that require filling. Appropriate candidates have been hard to find and, after a very thorough selection process, it is with the King’s greatest pleasure that I am to inform you that you are hereby invited to rejoin the ranks of the Royal Britannian Guard as Captain of the Royal Guard.

As one who has served as an officer for the Royal Guard in times past, men and women alike will look to you for your leadership and guidance. The circumstances that surrounded your previous departure are of no concern to King Casca. We hope that you will accept this invitation and be proud to serve the new council and Britannia.

Yours Sincerely,

The Royal Office of King Casca

Kaden played with a recently severed drow ear for a moment, pondering over the invitation that had been extended to him. So impersonal, not even signed by the new King himself. And why would he be picked? He had left on bad terms with his superiors, with whom he had disagreed with over the running of the Royal Council.

Now that they were gone, however, perhaps things would be different? After all, things recently had been hard for Kaden – life as a huntsman was not as profitable as it once was and with the recent town invasions and local trade slacking off, much of his income had been sourced from contracts, usually take out against drow.

Kaden looked over to his old officer’s armour in the corner of the shack, behind some hides. He picked it up and cleaned some of the mould and tarnish off with the sleeve of his shirt. A few missing rings here and there, nothing that couldn’t be fixed soon enough. His time for retirement had not yet come, so fate would seem..

Kaden Marsten ~ A Newly Minted Captain of the Royal Britannian Guard...

I have encountered this individual twice now and he seems friendly and eager to please in his new role, some times too friendly I think and I wonder where his alliances really lie...
