Focus on Factions: Alexia of Origin
| Posted on Saturday, April 19, 2008, 12:14 AM EDT by Watchertoo (CommunityNews) |
Focus on Factions: Alexia of Origin
Welcome to our next Focus on Factions article. Since I began playing factions about a year ago, I have met some fascinating people. Without doubt some of the most intriguing are the women who choose to participate in this aspect of UO. I hope these articles will enlighten and encourage other UO players to try factions. What is your UO name? Alexia How long have you played UO? 5 years and counting What do you consider your home shard? Origin What keeps you playing UO? Friends, the unending array of things to do, there is no monotony in UO What do you think of the new templates, soul stones, insurance, etc.? Interesting..it keeps things fresh. Insurance.....iffy on that one...I like the SP idea of blessing one item....the game to me has become more of what you have then how skilled you are..sure it's just pressing keys on a keyboard but...if you don't have an *ubar* suit you really need to think about what you're doing. Soulstones....I like...you don't have to be the same person from day to day. I personally don't use them all that often but it's a nice thing to have. Have they helped or hurt? It depends on your point of view I guess....personally I wasn't around before soulstones and insurance so I can't really say either way. If I had to play without, I wouldn't mind. What is your favorite type of character? Archer...I have a straight archer and a Bushido Archer, both very fun templates. How did you start playing Factions? I stumbled across the faction stone in Mag one day..3 years ago? I read up on factions and it sounded very intriguing. I have had one major faction battle in my 5 years of playing and it was a blast. Factions aren't what they used to be, that's for sure, so now I just run sigils by myself and have fun with my opposing faction mates. What faction do you belong to and why? True Brit because I wanted to be close to the Great City, I really had no clue what factions were when I started and I figured TB was a good one. After I joined I started doing my homework! *laughs* What do you think caused factions to “slow down”? Lack of interest, wasn't fun anymore, no point to it...alot of people join factions for the cheap reg vendors....the *true* meaning of factions got lost in translation and it needs to be revived. What do you think we can do to revive factions on your shard? Wow.....first we need more people in general on my shard*grins* then a HUGE campaign promoting factions and why people should play them. I think alot of people really just have no idea, like I did, and if we inform the people, maybe more would join. What would you change or add to factions? (and why?) Hmm...tough question. The skeleton of the faction system is awesome. I'm sure it was great fun when it was introduced....stealing sigils, getting back to base and waiting. Faction battles used to be spectacular, now if you see one you're lucky. I'm really not sure WHAT I would add..but something to spice it up..something different. Maybe have a special monster spawn in the captured sigils town base or something...enemy guards surrounding the sigil you want to steal....an alert that's sent to all opposing faction members online *Alert, Alert* just make things more interesting and maybe *force* a battle just to get people into it again. Do you see a difference in play style between men and woman? Most definitely. *Most* not all, men, are harder...fiercer. blood-thirstier (If that's a word) Have you seen any notable strength a woman player brings to factions or UO? Women players have always brought a certain strength I think. I know from personal experience that alot of people are surprised that I do more then crafting and growing plants *grins* That's not to say ALL women are passive players, but as a rule women are more gentle and caring, nurturing mothers and to get down and dirty and shed some blood is something alot of women just don't do, so people are surprised when they come up against a female in a game, my opinion anyway. What is your favorite part of factions? Ie, stealing, defending, etc? Stealing is by far my favorite part, it's why I think it needs to be more interesting. The way it is now, at least on my home shard, there's nothing challenging about it, stealth in, steal. stealth out.....*yawns* The more people in a faction, the more people that KNOW a sigil has just been stolen, like the aforementioned alert system, would make it MUCH more exciting and more challenging. Thank you for joining us for the first interview of a "woman in factions". I hope to be posting interviews/articles more regularly now that my new job has settled down a bit. If you are a faction player, male or female, and would like to be interviewed for this ongoing series, please email me at watchertoo@stratics.com. I am especially curious about your finest and not so finest moments in factions ... like the time I accidently bumped my heal button while stealthing out between a mass of guards....and it fizzled as they all hit me at once. It was a lovely monotone run to the healers.... Watchertoo |

From our friends at The Syndicate! The Syndicate is holding another of its famous FREE, open to the public, lotteries this weekend. It will take place Saturday 4/12 at 6:00pm EST at one of their castles. The lottery contains many high quality prizes and past lotteries have given away houses, bags of power scrolls as well as very rare items, among other things. BNN: Military Arrives In Moonglow
| Posted on Thursday, April 3, 2008, 12:01 PM EDT by Larisa (CommunityNews) |
Posted to uoherald.com: BNN: Military Arrives In Moonglow Military Arrives in Moonglow Draconi Apr 3 2008 9:08AM Early this morning a blockade of cannons was erected around the crater in southern Moonglow. Captain Avery, himself on scene, tersely ordered our correspondents back and had little to say directly to us. However, contrary to expectations, the military is not stopping ordinary (albeit well-armed) citizens from entering the rift! Despite refusals to comment on the situation, the BNN has been asked to publish a short declaration from the Royal Britannian Guard, which follows: Attention citizens of Moonglow, the greater Britannian kingdom, and visitors. A state of emergency has been declared in the township of Moonglow, currently under attack by forces unknown. We do not advise volunteerism in the city’s defense, but under these incredible circumstances we will not interfere with attempts to enter the rift we are now guarding. A medical station is already under construction. All contact with entities within the rift should be met with extreme prejudice. Experience has shown that nothing within has attempted any form of communication – only vicious attacks resulting in numerous deaths. Please report any and all information gathered to myself, Captain Avery. The BNN also regrets to inform our readers that we’ve confirmed the death of Kronos, leader of the blackrock detector project. Dexter, his field apprentice, disappeared shortly after returning to Moonglow from the rift with master mage Sutek, who arrived at the scene after the disaster. The fate of Melissa, friend and fellow mage of the local council, is currently unknown. We will continue informing our readership about this calamity as details pour in.

BNN: Blackrock Detector Fails! Mages Reported Missing!
| Posted on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 10:55 AM EDT by Larisa (CommunityNews) |
Posted to uoherald.com: BNN: Blackrock Detector Fails! Mages Reported Missing! Jeremy Dalberg 26 Oct 2007 12:38:43 EST Blackrock Detector Fails! Mages Reported Missing! Draconi Apr 2 2008 8:24AM Events took a terrifying turn in Moonglow this weekend as Kronos, Director of Alchemical Studies, turned on his blackrock detecting machine for the second, and apparently, very last time. Witnesses reported a keening, rushing sound enveloping the crowd amidst magical flares, when suddenly those standing closest to the machine disappeared in a flare of light! The remaining onlookers had only a moment’s warning before an explosion ripped through the machine itself, leaving a gaping hole where hundreds had gathered just seconds before. Our own reporter vanished in the initial chaos, leaving the BNN with little to go on for hours as a much more apprehensive crowd began gathering around the smoldering crater. Their wait wasn’t in vain, however, when after a while a moongate, as dark as night, opened at the base of the crater. Frenzied survivors began pouring out of the portal; screams for healers and aid rang up over the ridges as they clambered up the sides. Against all reason more jumped back into the darkness, but the BNN was already confirming details on what lay beyond with our own correspondent. We know for certain that the place beyond the rift resembles our own Moonglow, yet is infested with hordes of demonic entities. We also know that one or more of the mages working on the project, Kronos, Melissa, and Dexter, were killed within. The others, if any survive, are missing. The rift apparently leads not to a “place” so much as a “when.” The local mages are struggling to explain this phenomenon, but claim that the rift is bound to the failure of the experiment the previous day, and has captured some slice of time in which the good people of Moonglow were trapped. The BNN is also attempting to corroborate reports that some sort of battle took place within the so-called “timerift” between the Time Lord, and other beings of extraordinary power. We’ve also received word that the military is sending reinforcements to secure the perimeter of the gate. We urge our readers to be wary of the rift, and not enter it under any circumstances!

Overview of the UO:KR Client Available
| Posted on Monday, March 10, 2008, 9:17 PM EDT by Watchertoo (CommunityNews) |
This just sent to us by our friends at The Syndicate®: An Overview Of The UO:KR Client The UO:KR client came out in 2007. It struggled with bugs and performance issues that caused a large number of players to steer clear of using it. A number of patches were released such that by mid-Feb 2008 the client was in pretty good shape and offered a bunch of useful features to players. The Syndicate® created a series of articles that were used internally in the guild to help educate the members on the new client and the options they might find useful. Those articles have been compiled into a single guide that has been made available on their website to all players. You can find a copy of the article HERE. |

UOForums Interviews Sean from The Syndicate
| Posted on Sunday, March 2, 2008, 5:35 PM EST by Watchertoo (CommunityNews) |
We have received this from our friends at UOForums.com: UOForums Interviews Sean from The Syndicate Sean from The Syndicate was kind enough to agree to our interview and answer our users’ questions. 1. What has made The Syndicate® so successful that they have been around for so long? The short answer to that question is: read the book (Legend of The Syndicate from AvariPress.com or Amazon.com). The answer to that question is actually extremely lengthy hence why we have a book published. We have been around since 1996 but if we were to found our guild today and make the mistakes we made back in the first couple of years, we wouldn't last as a guild. We made a number of mistakes that we survived because of the nature of the 'perfect storm' that existed back then. The gaming world was nothing like it is today. Expectations were different. Technology was different. People were lucky to have 32.2kbps modems and websites were few and far between and forums even more so. There was no site like uoforums.com for example. So we were able to make rookie mistakes and survive them because there was no one to step in and offer to do things 'right' when we were doing them wrong (like having poor recruiting standards). Fortunately, we made a commitment early on to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them. So because of that we matured into a very successful, very organized, extremely low turnover, highly unified guild. But we did have our bumps along the way, especially at the start, that are common "killers" of guilds. So one of the reasons we published Legend of The Syndicate was to share the mistakes we made and how we overcame them which in turn may help other guilds, that use a similar structure to ours, avoid the same pitfalls. 2. Does The Syndicate® have any plans to move to other major online games besides UO & WoW? The Syndicate has a presence in just about every game out there. We beta tested just about everything out there. We consulted on a number of games that are popular today. And our members play just about everything. But... we only recruit for WoW and for UO. We have no plans to widen recruiting to other games in the near future. We will, at some point, have several hundred members playing some other major game and we will recruit for it. Since we recruit based on who are good friends with, we only tend to add new members when we have a substantial presence in a game that we can develop those friendships with a large number of members. 3. Is there a "high" limit to membership and how does membership application work? While we have no firm upper size limit per-se, we do try to maintain the guild at roughly the size it is now. Of course, a couple years back I would have said we were trying to maintain the guild at roughly 500 members and then 550 and now 600. The reality is that our overall size does creep up over time. The reason for that is that we ONLY (no exceptions) recruit people we are friends with. We ONLY recruit people with the same values, play styles and gaming goals as ours. We ONLY recruit people with a desire to be a member for the long term that have a personality that is compatible with those already in the guild. In short, we recruit like minded people that we are friends with. By having that focus, we have virtually no turnover. We lose about one person every two months to quitting for another guild or unhappy with some rule. Conversely we receive more than 4,000 applications to join each year. We actually lose more members due to needing to leave online gaming entirely (for work, health, parental or spouse related issues) than we do from any other reason. We have virtually no drama and no infighting and no backstabbing etc.. within the guild. So by having that recruiting focus, we do reject a massive amount of applications but we create a very stable guild that stands the test of time. It also means we only grow very slowly over time so while there isn't an upper limit to the size, there is pressure to only add in the exact right people for our team. The rest of our interview can be found in this thread at- UOForums.com |

LLTS.org Reborn | |
| Posted on Sunday, March 2, 2008, 5:33 PM EST by Watchertoo (CommunityNews) |
We have received this from our friends at The Syndicate: LLTS.ORG Is Reborn Our core website (www.LLTS.org) has been completely redesigned. I'm very happy with how it turned out so I wanted to share the news. The previous incarnation of our site went back literally to 1996 in some areas. We had bolted onto it and tweaked and revised things for more than a decade and it had become a bit of a Frankenstein. While a few times over its life (the latest being about 4 years ago) we put a new overall layout on the site, there were still parts dating back a very long time and things were still somewhat bolted together. Our new site started from the ground up with a completely new layout and design. The new site has lots of eye candy on it but what is cool about those graphics is that they are 100% owned by The Syndicate. They come from artwork we have had commissioned and done for the guild. The words on the site underwent a complete rewrite. While some areas came out similar to what they were before, lots of sections were dropped, merged, streamlined etc.. to eliminate redundancies and get our points across more quickly to the reader. So the new site has just gone live today and I wanted to share it with you to be among the first of our friends, fellow gamers and members to get to see it :) Sean Dragons The Syndicate® www.LLTS.org

Its an exciting project with fascinating stories and surveys! Here is the announcement of the latest issue. The Daedalus Project: New Findings and Surveys The Daedalus Project (http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus) is an ongoing online survey study of MMORPG players that has surveyed over 40,000 players. Some highlights of the current issue's findings: - Are short people more likely to make tall avatars? Who prefers to be an Elf and who prefers to be an old dwarf? In this article, we'll take a look at the intersection of physical bodies and virtual bodies: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001613.php
- Can MMOs be therapeutic? In this article, we'll take a look at the many different ways in which people use MMOs as a coping mechanism and consider how MMOs provide an outlet for many psychological stressors. We'll also explore both positive and negative consequences of doing so, and in particular discuss the gray area between therapy and dependency: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001610.php
- What happens when people who know each other face-to-face reverse roles when they play an MMO together? Do these reversals change their face-to-face relationship in any way? In this article, we'll consider perspectives from friends, romantic partners, parent-children pairs, and boss-employee pairs: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001611.php

Today's UO House of Commons chat marks a very important day in UO Stratics history. Not only is this House of Commons the one hundred and fourteenth time we have gathered to discuss Ultima Online, today we also celebrate the tenth anniversary of the very first UO HoC held exactly ten years ago on February 12th, 1998.

Tenth Anniversary of the UO House of Commons
| Posted on Monday, February 11, 2008, 2:10 PM EST by Sheridan_of_ElF (CommunityNews) |

Do you have a favorite number? Perhaps a lucky one that means something special to you or one that happens to pop up in the darndest of places? Now, those of you conspiracy theorists who saw that film, The Number 23, put away your tinfoil hats and ponder a bit on yours. I wouldn't say I really have a lucky number so much as I've recently grown rather fond of one number in particular - one hundred and fourteen. Now, given any number just on its own without context is rather ambiguous and mundane... Without something to define or quantify in some fashion, a number is just a number. One hundred and fourteen what exactly...? Years? Well, Google informs me that one hundred and fourteen years ago, W.K. Dickson received a patent on motion picture film and was hailed as the inventor of the motion picture camera... but that's not why it's my favorite number. One hundred and fourteen protons? That's how many element 114, also called ununquadium or eka-lead, on the Periodic table of the Elements had for the few seconds of its half life before decaying... or so Wikipedia said. The amount of search results for 114 is staggering... and across such a broad array of topics, too - from asteroids almost 100km in diameter like 114 Kassandra to the total number of "suras" or "chapters" in the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book. But the one reference to the number that means the most to me and hopefully will strike a chord with many, many others is one you won't find on a search engine or in any encyclopedia, but one you'd find celebrated on this very Web site.
Join the staffmembers of both UO Stratics and EA/Mythic's Live team this Tuesday, February 12th as we come together once more for the 114th UO House of Commons to discuss the current state and future of Ultima Online. The UO HoC offers a unique opportunity for the community to ask direct questions of the development team in a real-time environment. Tuesday's HoC marks the 10th anniversary of the very first House of Commons Developer chat held way back on February 12th, 1998 between our then fledgling network and the team from Origin Systems, Inc. It's hard to believe that ten years have passed since that first chat concluded, but the premise was simple and straightforward from the beginning and it stuck... the UO House of Commons page on Stratics reflects that in its motto: "In order to form a more common bond between the Peoples and Rulers of Britannia." There have been plenty of both peoples and rulers that have come and gone these ten years past, but the UO HoC marches on! Believe it or not, but we still have the chat logs from every one of the previous 113 Developer chats as well as over 30 UO Celebrity chats with various members of the community like ImaNewbie of the popular Web comic and Tug from Tugsoft, creator of UO Assist, available for browsing. Take a trip with me now down memory lane as I highlight a few of those burning questions on every UO player's mind back in 1998 at that very first UO House of Commons... DenDragon - Has any consideration been given to trash cans? Or a method for players to delete unwanted items? Stormwynd - that's a neat idea Stormwynd - Maybe a player house only feature? DenDragon - I see your point... Maybe in towns and houses only? DesignerD - Lord knows we'd love to add ways to reduce item count ;) We're just very... uhh... "cautious" (read "cynical") about the ways which players will use features v - as in it requires a player house like a vendor or guild stone? DenDragon - heh, I understand DesignerD - Our first rule for a design is, "OK, how will they exploit it?"
Ahh yes... 1998. I yearn for such simple times when the hot topic was getting trashcans! HellBoyEC - ..are there any event/plot specific questions I can answer? DenDragon - HellBoy--I guess I'll throw forward the obligitory Necromancy question. :) DenDragon - Are we close to seeing it implemented, or has it been set on the back burner? HellBoyEC - I think Storm can field that.... HellBoyEC - The Liche's who are making waves currently HellBoyEC - are some of the earliest examples of necromancy in the game Stormwynd - It has been on the backburner for a while, but I hope to get time to work on it real soon now. Stormwynd - There is already one spell implemented, but I haven Stormwynd - oops... haven't had a chance to continue on them lately. DenDragon - I take it Necromancy will be considered a new skill.. Along with other possible new magicks? Stormwynd - Possibly.... :-) DenDragon - One more question on my part: The dungeon Doom--will that be completed within the current UO world, or will an expansion CD be necessary? DesignerD - Can't answer that :) Sorry!
(As a sidenote, both Necromancy and the Dungeon Doom were released (unleashed?) in the Ultima Online: Age of Shadows expansion in early 2003! Should we be calling DenDragon "NostraDenmus" instead?)
Please join us on Tuesday, February 12th, for the 114th House of Commons with the Developers of Ultima Online at 4:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM EST in the #StraticsHoC channel on the Stratics IRC network.

UOGuide January Updates
| Posted on Sunday, February 10, 2008, 2:36 PM EST by Larisa (CommunityNews) |
This just in from our friends at UOGuide. What an exciting time for UOGuide. The first month of this new year has been a flurry of activity, adding well over 1,000 new pages to the site. Due to in large part by the merger of UOStuff, UOGuide now has well over 3,000 web pages of UO information. Not only did the amount of content explode, but the merger was also fully completed in January.
The Main Page has a brand new look, adding three new features. Two of them are ideas taken from the old UO website. The first is Featured Establishments. Players of houses which serve a public function can submit their building for featuring. It is rotated on a weekly basis and is a great way to advertise a location. To submit an establishment click here. The second feature is the Skill of the Week. Each week one skill will be featured. The third feature is all new, featuring different points of interest in the world of Britannia. This weeks featured location are the Meer Catacombs .
We are also continuing to feature screenshots on the main page. A new method of submission has been setup. Email your screenshots to uoguide@gmail.com. Be sure to include a little caption about what is going on in the picture.
There is so much new content this month it is hard to choose only a few to highlight. - New Player Quests - Almost every skill has a quest in New Haven. These quests are the quickest way to train up to 50.
- Slayer Information - All you could ever know about slayer weapons and their types.
- Quests - The UOStuff merger has added a wealth of detailed quest information. Search for quest information either by area or by NPC.
- Recipes - Almost every recipe has been added with crafting information and item properties.
- Artifacts - Hundreds of artifacts are listed with detailed properties and where they come from.
As always, UOGuide is seeking new people to contribute. While 3,000 pages may seem to cover nearly every possible aspect of UO, nearly another 3,000 are waiting to be created. Absolutely anyone can help build UOGuide, all it takes is a few moments to register an account. In seconds you will have access to edit almost any page or create one on any UO subject you wish to write about. I hope you will come help us out.

As you share your love of Ultima Online, please continue to tell others about UO Toolbar! Again... thanks!
