Stratics Continues Under New Management
| Posted on Monday, February 8, 2010, 1:26 PM EST by AirmidCecht (CommunityNews) |
Stratics Continues Under New Management In 1997 Ryan Findley founded what would eventually become Stratics in connection with Ultima Online as a source for information and interaction with a community of players and the developers of UO. In the following years, Stratics continued to grow along with the community eventually expanding to other games and stands today, almost 13 years later, as a communication source and guide for news and information on your favorite MMO.
In January 2010, Justin Hall took over as General Manager with the goal of positive forward momentum for all gaming, old and new. While Ryan “Den Dragon” will always be referred to as Stratic’s founder, we look forward to testing the waters with JHall at its helm. We asked Justin to answer a few questions for us to become familiar with our new GM and the experience he hopes to bring to Stratics Central.
Can you start by telling us a bit about your past experiences in gaming and fan sites that lend towards leading this site at the start of a new decade?
First of all, let me thank you for this opportunity to sit down with the community, I appreciate you're time and the time of all of our staff members!
I've been playing UO since beta, and I've played every major MMO, and more or less every major game title, that's been released in the last 15 years. Gaming is in my blood, and I understand the wants and needs of gamers. Moving forward we're going to design and operate Stratics in a way that will cater to these needs by offering the most in-depth, news, guides, walk-throughs, and editorial available.
What made you decide Stratics was the right venue for you?
It's been a website I've read every few days for 13 years, I've known Den for a long time, and I've always had an overwhelming desire to make things succeed.
What are your short and long term goals for Stratics Central?
In the short term: There's lots to learn. I need to meet with the CM's (Community Managers) for every section of the site and focus on getting the sections updated. I'm going to be updating some of the systems the site uses to make it easier for people to use and navigate, and I'm going to involve myself a little more in the community - possibly with some good giveaways and bringing more volunteers on board to manage some of our currently non-updated sections.
Are there plans to host more contests for gamers and if so could you name a few ideas?
Excellent lead in! Yes, the plan is to spice things up a bit with a few contests and things to get people using and enjoying the site more. Contest goodies will range from gaming monitors, mice, keyboards, and headsets to any number of different game gear items. It'll all fall under the "cool stuff only" rule.
While many volunteers offer their experience and time to Stratics, there is always room for more help as the evolution of the site continues. What type of incentives do you hope to offer anyone ready to hop aboard?
Well something I've always believed in is rewarding kindness. Taking on a volunteer position to post editorial and educate people about the more difficult areas of a game is a pretty awesome thing to do. I'd like to reward people with exclusive staff only contests, and exclusive game gear we'll get from our relationship with developers.
Keeping in mind that Ultima Online became the start of Stratics Central, specifically what are your feelings towards UO and the community that has stuck by these forums for almost 13 yrs now?
I still play constantly, I've always been a fan and I think it's safe to say...You and I...we're in the same boat. forward, forward, back one, back one, drop anchor.
We look forward to testing out our new GM and the goals he has for staff and community improvements at the start of this New Year. Thank you, Justin for taking the time to let us get to know you a bit. Interview by AirmidCecht

An Interview With Regine ‘Sakkarah’ Abel
| Posted on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, 5:41 PM EST by AirmidCecht (CommunityNews) |

An Interview With Regine ‘Sakkarah’ Abel Lining up a few questions with Sakkarah for the UO community is always a treat when it comes to “what’s next?” because one never knows what the team has up their sleeve. I think many would agree when we look at the last few holiday events that there tends to be something for everyone and adjustments have been made when necessary. With a strong background in UO, we need that sense of history now more than ever after suffering the loss of some great team members with EA layoffs. That said we have a few questions and a thank you to Sakkarah for taking the time to give us an update. While many in the community are already familiar with you, can you give us a quick run down of your history with UO and your transition to the development team? I've been playing UO since beta. I started out as a crafter (Blacksmith), did a bit of RP, then got hooked on treasure maps. That led me to start my treasure maps website which grew over time to training guides and what not. I dabbled in Factions, mainly with my thief. Then came champ spawns which drew me permanently back to Felucca. I ran a fairly large guild for many years until I joined the team. In between that, I had been running a lot of events as a player and ran the QuestMasters guild for a while. That got me noticed and I was invited to join the EM program. During that time, I was obtaining a degree in Game Design and started working in a Montreal game studio. Two years ago, I was approached by Mythic regarding an opening on the UO design team and the rest is history :) How is it different running an event as a player vs. as a developer? Extremely different, both good and bad. As a player, you are limited by existing game mechanics. I was lucky on Atlantic to have had a great network of friends and helpers (Tazar definitely being at the top of that list!) so it made things easier. After a while, I had established a reputation too, so players usually behaved. But providing enticing rewards was challenging at times and always very costly. As a Dev, it's challenging differently. Players are a lot less forgiving towards us. So you have to account for every possible situation, every playstyle, real life schedules, exploits, lag, casual/hardcore players, rares market, balancing issues, etc. But it’s great because you have a lot more power to do crazy things. The only real limitations here are your own creativity and scripting skills. I’ve come a long way on that front since joining the team. That has enabled me to be more daring in the type of things I do. So I’m excited about what we will be able to deliver in the future. Personally, I try to make events that encourage people to work together and help them rediscover part of the game they may have forgotten about or never had a chance to experiment before. With the readjustment of the UO team, can you give us an idea of how this will impact the community moving forward with events? We intend for the impact to be minimal if at all noticeable. There may be the occasional apparent downtime while we’re frantically working on the next big thing but we’ll do our best to keep it minimal. I think we’ve done pretty good delivering some fun content in the past few months and we already have quite a few events lined up for the not too distant future. The EMs are also doing an amazing job keeping things hopping on their respective shards. So overall, I think our players will be happy. Realizing you just wrapped up SA in a pretty nice package for the players, are there any plans for future expansions along the lines of ML and SA? There certainly are. We've done quite a bit of brainstorming and some pretty solid designs have been laid out already. In fact, our engineers are doing a first pass in investigating some of the things we want to accomplish. We are not looking at as big an expansion as SA was but it should be just as exciting! I know I’m definitely looking forward to both develop it and play it! Do you have a 'dream project' you'd like to do, if time and resources permitted? My dream project would revolve around RP Towns and RP tools. Frankly, I pretty much have it all laid out in my head. But it would require a lot of engineering, art and design time to make it happen. I would love to give players the real ability of building their own towns with a RTS side to it, where certain buildings and upgrades become available as the town grows in size. Each town would be encouraged (though not obligated) to specialize itself to unlock specific upgrades (i.e. crafter town vs. military vs. maritime). It would have a proper election, taxes, war systems integrated. Instead of everyone camping Luna, I would like to see people congregate to specific player towns when they want specific specialty goods or activities. With that, I would also like to give players a lot more tools to create and run their own events, from oracles to customizable clues and rewards that can be scattered out in the world, even in the depths of a dungeon. With the Felucca vs. Trammel debate standing the test of time, how do you address the different play styles when implementing new items and events in UO? We try to give items that can be used by the greater number of people, and not so much focus on a specific class or play style. The simplest route is decorative items. But not everyone is into decorating. So we try to get useful items that aren't overpowering, such as the costumes and harvester's blade. In the case of weapons and armor type, we just try to limit the number and type of the properties we give them. HCI, DCI, SDI, MR and LRC are usually properties that can be beneficial and appealing to both PvMers and PvPers. So we will often use them. Because of PvP, we try to be careful which item slot will be used to prevent people putting together insane gear, and now with the gargoyles, we also need to make sure it's something all races will be able to use. Other MMO’s seem to undercut the importance of player “ownership” in their games. Do you feel this has affected the longevity of Ultima Online with housing and crafting and how do you feel the community itself affects UO’s history? I think the strong sense of ownership and community is one of the main reason UO has stood the test of time. In UO, you literally own a piece of world. This is your house. This is your town. This is your legacy. Not the Dev’s, not the EMs’ but yours. As a character, you make your own destiny, which in turn will impact those around you. How significant this impact will be is up to you. I have yet to experience another MMO where individuals, guilds, towns can truly make their mark on their world (hate them or love them) and be commemorated in History as is the case with UO, be it on their home shard or globally. In most other MMOs, you’re just another DPS, another Tank, another Healer or some dude in an auction house. In UO, if you’re looking for a good PvPer, they will be referred to by name. If you want some potion kegs, you’ll be sent to John’s shop, he’s always well stocked. You want armor? Go check Sarah near Moonglow gate. A good guild for a new player? Go talk to (insert guild name). House deco ideas? Talk to so and so or go check out Linda’s houses near this town or that town. No one cares if another DPS quits, but the Johns and Sarahs and Lindas do matter. And the people who rely on them give them a reason to stick around. What does this week consist of for you? What are you focusing on for UO? Right now, the focus is on the next event arc. A lot of back story writing, quite a bit of coding mainly for feasibility testing and assets requests. The destruction of Magincia was no doubt one of the most impressive events ever put together. The rebuilding by no means pretends to be as spectacular but it will certainly try to do it some justice. Since this involves the reconstruction of a city, crafters will definitely be involved. The tricky part is to make it as enticing for PvMers as well as PvPers and to also come up with ways to reward shard participation.
Thank you Sakarrah for taking the time to address the community of players as we head into another wonderful year of Ultima Online! |

Same Questions for Andy Belford on the Community Team
| Posted on Thursday, December 3, 2009, 6:47 AM EST by AirmidCecht (CommunityNews) |

Same Questions for Andy Belford on the Community Team
As Andy walked late into the Salty Dog after James and I downed a few pints, I found it easier to just slide the ale stained parchment in front of him while we went a few rounds with darts. Andy would have to wait until another time to join in on the mongbat fun. *BULLSEYE!* (Yes, I’m that good…)
Let’s start by asking what your specific title is and your duties with this new community team:
I’m a Community Coordinator here at Mythic Entertainment, however, as James said, that only scratches the surface on describing what our responsibilities entail. We’re moderators, mediators, video producers, content managers, Ombudsmen, the list goes on and on. Much like our peers in the Community sector we’re jacks of all trades who are required to wear many varied hats (some with feathers!).
Secondly, do you play Ultima Online or have you in the past and what is your take on this older mmo?
To be honest, I haven’t played UO in a looooong time. What I can say is that UO is what I consider to be part of my foundation of MMORPG gaming. I’ve been an online gamer since my formative years and I would consider UO to be a part of that. While I would say that I dipped my toes in the pool with UO, I really dove headfirst with Asheron’s Call back in 1999. My other online gaming experiences include many, many, many MMO’s, years of online FPS’s (played CS league for awhile and pretty much every casual game I can get my hands on (Farmville is the debbil).
What is your background with EA Mythic?
I started right around the Launch of WAR last September. The past year has been a definite trial by fire and I’ve learned a lot of valuable lessons during that time.
With all the recent changes what do you hope to accomplish with the UO community?
UO is a game built on tradition. I say Tradition because anytime you have a community of players with a built in legacy as strong and as well known as UO’s, there is a strong tradition that goes along with it. The development team of UO also has a strong tradition of being one of the most communicative and open teams in the MMO development field. This is something that we are immensely proud of and try to exemplify in our other titles.
What I’m hoping to accomplish with UO is to embrace this tradition while rethinking some of the more standard community content formats. I’m currently working on some new social media initiatives involving all three games, UO, DAoC and WAR, which will hopefully be a fresh and, at the same time, respectful new way of reaching out to our communities.
Who will be taking on the role of the main line of communication between the UO player base and the dev team?
As I said before, we’re extremely fortunate to have a development team that cares so deeply about the community that they make the game for. The community team is more than happy to continue supporting the development team in their day to day interaction with the players.
Finally, are there any thoughts you would like to personally share with the UO players as this community team takes on Ultima Online?
As a genre, MMORPG’s owe a LOT to the UO community. There have been many respected Community professionals that have come from the UO community in one way, shape or form. Today’s modern MMO landscape has evolved to be what it is largely because of the contributions of Ultima Online and the community surrounding it. I am honored to be entrusted with this legacy and only hope to be able to live up to what it represents in the future.
Thank you Andy for sharing a bit of your background and future plans and we hope to introduce both you and James to a great UO experience. |

A Few Questions for James Nichols on the Community Team
| Posted on Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 1:37 PM EST by AirmidCecht (CommunityNews) |

A Few Questions for James Nichols on the Community Team
James Nichols is taking on the role of one of the community managers for Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer.
First of all James, welcome to UO Stratics! It is one of the main sources of information that the community of UO players use to discuss all things Ultima. We also appreciate the communication and feedback we get from the developers when they post on the main forums.
This is a motley bunch though, wary of new faces without a little bit of background information. So c’mon and have a seat at the Salty Dog and don’t mind the blaring lights shining on you from above. This is not an interrogation at all. *winks*
Let’s start by asking what your specific title is and your duties with this new community team:
James: Ahoy! Currently I’m the Community Forums Manager here at Mythic, though that’s far from descriptive about my current responsibilities. My duties broadly encompass facilitating all the community needs across our three brands. We’re still figuring out all the details but it’s an exciting and new challenge and we’re looking to make some new approaches towards old practices to support these unique and thriving communities.
Secondly, and we may as well get this out in the open straight away, do you play Ultima Online or have you in the past and if so what is your take on this older mmo?
James: I have, Airmid showed me the ropes in fact! Though I would say I’m far from an experienced player. I’m familiar with the game and have met many fans at Town Halls and have more friends than I can count on my hands and feet that have dedicated many years and still talk about their (mis)adventures!
Ultima is a rock-solid game and universe that has been around for nearly 30 years with UO making up 1/3 of that lifespan. It’s a unique game unlike really any other currently played by a large audience and I look forward to learning more about its nooks, crannies, and chicken escaping escapades in the coming weeks.
What is your background with EA Mythic?
James: I’ve been at Mythic for over two years now arriving here after two years at Sigil Games Online. I was hired on to work on WAR but through that experience I’ve gotten to learn a lot about our legacy through Dark Age and Ultima.
With all the recent changes, and there is much we’re sure you cannot discuss yet, what do you hope to accomplish with the UO community?
James: We want to ensure you guys continue to receive the attention you’ve come to expect through new features on the Herald and developer interaction. UO is fortunate to have a great, dedicated team that remains committed to its community and has been a part of it for a decade. (I should also note that this dedication makes it a lot easier to get myself into gear for working with UO).
Who will be taking on the role of the main line of communication between the UO player base and the dev team?
James: Andy, myself, and the dev team will all be working closely together to ensure the same (if not better) level of communication you’ve come to know!
Cal mentioned in his Producer’s Letter that there are some great things to highlight for UO including an increase in subscriptions. Without getting into actual numbers, can you share with us percentage wise the increase you are seeing?
James: Is “Up” a percentage? I don’t actually have those numbers so you’re asking the wrong guy, but the community continues to grow as more players come back (and even bring their friends) to check out what’s new. Stygian Abyss brought new energy and excitement, coupled with live events it seems like it’s a happening time in Brittania!
Finally, are there any thoughts you would like to personally share with the UO players as this community team takes on Ultima Online?
James: Any tips for a level 5 paladin? ☺
Needless to say I’m excited to be getting involved in this timeless game, and while we may not know each other yet I look forward to changing that overtime. I might look like an ogre but I’m a big softie – and hugs are free!
Thanks James for answering a few questions for the UO community and we hope to hear from you often on the forums. We also hope to have a Part II with Andy Belford up for the players soon!

Ultima Online Stratics Weekly Announcement:
This week brings an update long awaited
- With many thanks to Xena Dragon we're able to bring you weapon information with updated swing speed formula. Weapon speed figures on all weapons in the item catalogue have been updated to correspond with this change.
- Also Stonecrafting is updated with SA content
Again my thanks to people who have contacted me during the week in threads or pms with various small corrections or items of information. I appreciated your input. If you would like to submit a contribution please send it to uoinfo@stratics.com, petra@stratics.com, or send a pm to me, Petra Fyde. Alternatively, if you feel you'd like to join the Stratics team as a content editor, I'll be interested to hear from you.
- Talk to me!
- I'm listening!
