The time has come, folks! Krystal is 5 away from 10,000 murder counts!

She has received PM's from many players with offers to be the 10,000th count. As you can imagine, it is difficult to pick just one person, so we'll make it an event and here is what we're doing...

We will squeeze all the players who want to participate into the Fight Night Arena. She will fire upon the crowd with a short bow/lightning special until players start dropping. We will be grabbing multiple screenshots to determine who the 10k count belongs to!

- If you wish to participate, come naked and bring nothing in your pack. We don't want you to lose anything in the chaos!

- Stable live mounts and pets in town.

Fight Night will follow the event.

Wedding Bells

Wedding Bells

Fair winds brought news of spring love to be united under Nujel'm skies. Friends, enemies and wistful bystanders gathered to pay thier blessings to Sara Dale and Scopulus Falco at 8pm, June 12, as they joined hands and hearts in matrimony.

EMs Faine Morgan and Eira officiated a lovely ceremony reminiscent of times and ways that UO pays homage to, bringing a tear to more than one eye noticed by this reporter.

A lovely reception followed with much merriment, drink and laughter. The bride and groom followed the tradition of tossing the flowers and garter and stories were told by Lady Hoffs and the grim orc Mo'gluk. I was honored to have the opportunity to attend, to make new friends and see some old friends. I wish you both the best of happiness!

Wedding Toast

Here’s to Sara and Scopulus:
May they always love each other as much as they do today.
Now each of you has a best friend forever.
Each of you is a shelter for the other from life’s storms.
Each of you can share with each other life’s greatest pleasures.
This is a great beginning, but the best is yet to come.
Let today’s treasured memories turn into beautiful tomorrows
full of joy, fun, contentment and satisfaction.
The world always welcomes lovers,
and the whole wide world is opening up for you now
to share its treasures and delights.
May all your dreams come true, and may we get to share in them!

Cloak and Dagger: A Pictorial Account

My friends, I was quite shocked today when a series of images were delivered to my desk anonymously. This poor blue blooded reporter is sickened and wishes desperately to only burn them at once. But it is my duty to bring them to your attention, though I assure you, I have no idea what this portends.

What?? No! *rubs her ears* Keep hearing things.... Oh well.

psst! did anyone get anything good?

Siege Perilous Tour Event

Tour of Siege Perilous Event

Invitations went out last week for a tour of our veteran shard, Siege Perilous on Sunday March 8th at 7pm est. Response to these invitations was very encouraging. Our intent was to provide a non-discouraging introduction to the ruleset and environment and allow questions to be asked and answered. There was a nice turnout of approximately six individuals from other shards, as well as a variety of Siege folk to welcome them from RPers to PKs to smelly orcs.

Hoffs prepared a detailed summary about life on Siege to share with our guests which was delivered to a very interested audience. Some in attendance were here for the very first time. While others had had a variety of experiences in thier efforts to survive on our shard. They soon came to see that there are very tried and true ways to approach Siege to make this a very rewarding experience.

After a question and answer session...and cookies...we started on our tour. First stop was the tavern at Gilfane where Hoffs spoke of his community and upcoming events.

Next up was a stop at the tavern in Iantown, where a very sentimental Kelmo spoke of the Iantown that once was and where many of us would like to see it go in the future.

The last community on our tour was Wispwood, a town long known for RP and long running storynights. Bruin spoke to us here, I believe.

NO tour of Siege Perilous would be complete without a run through the infamous Luna....

I suppose...

Last stop was the NEW guild hall. The purpose and nature of this guild had already been explained and with this welcome from the community, several folk joined.

All in all, a very successful event which I hope will be repeated regularly. These folk got to meet some of the real people behind the the stigma of the shard and found there are more than just PKing of the innocent. (While that does abound as well)

I would like to give a warm thanks to Hoffs for hosting and organizing the event, to community leaders for being present to receive guests, QZ for baking and other supplies, to Hoffs again for the supply of leather and to those who made armor and arcane in preparation for the possibility of raids.

St. Valentine's Day Events

St. Valentine's Day Events

As promised, EM Alcor delivered several quests of types that could be completed and enjoyed by every player type. He even gave us hints on which ones would be more suited for what kind of player. Each quest was based on one of the Virtues and the first to complete each one would wine the corresponding colored rose displayed at Skara's Community Center. Completely certain combinations of three quests first would also win a rose.

Now since this reporter is little more than a dog trainer and role player at heart, I went for the quest of Honesty. Off I ran to the hedge maze, not thinking it would be a problem. Hadn't been there since the old days, though and quickly became lost. Beyond that problem, all the buildings seemed to have wooden roofs!

Finally I found the building with the book. It told me the name of the person Alcor was thinking of and instructed me to go to four different places. Thank goodness I had a spot of magic on me, or my quest may have ended there, lost in the maze!

It took a little time for me to find the establishments in question as I usually hang out in Malas, but in time it was done. I had the answers to the questions about Mr. Gorrow that Alcor wanted.

Well, poo. Speedy beat me to the rose...

The completion of the quests was pretty much done in an orderly manner, with only one mishap when a certain thief snatched one of the roses off the table when Alcor unlocked it. He did, however, fess it up, and everyone got their rewards. The event was well attended and I believe, enjoyed by all.

The following is the official summary of the event, written by EM Alcor:

My thanks to all who turned up for the events last night. Upon reflection, perhaps Valentine's Day itself was not the best time to hold it, yet I am sure many of those who were out for the evening received rewards of their own! I also perhaps made one or two of the quests a little too hard and so nobody actually completed more than two.

Here are the quest solutions for anyone who was unable to complete any:

Quest of Honesty - This was the easiest quest, completed by several and very quickly in some cases. The clue led you to the hedge maze where a book informed you of the person I was thinking of - Gorrow, mayor of Luna. However, the book also asked you to visit four other locations before returning back to me. Had participants truthfully visited these areas they should have seen a book containing scraps of information about Gorrow. Those completing the quest would then be asked random questions to test their honesty. The first person to complete the quest and win the rose was Speedy.

Quest of Humility - This was an oddball quest. Participants had to visit Laurence the Hermit in Ilshenar. From him, they had to work out that to complete the quest and be truly humble they had to come before me naked with an empty backpack. Henry of NEW was the first to do this and win thereby win the rose, followed almost simultaneously by Ginna.

To talk properly to Laurence, he had to be given a drink of water. Some people reported problems with this and it now seems that there are two types of water that can be obtained and it only worked with one of them. Apologies for that oversight.

Quest of Compassion - Camilla the Destitute could be found at the south gate of Trinsic. It seemed that she had been robbed by two well-known thieves and players were asked to replace these. For each item you replaced you were given a letter. These nine letters were rearranged to form the word that I was looking for - samaritan. Jesus was first to come up with the answer and win the rose.

Quest of Sacrifice - Players had to travel to Bald Island and kill the horrid, red spider called Miss Valentine. Once dead, pieces of her skeleton could be found on the corpse (recall runes renamed "Miss Valentine's chitin"). The first person to come back with this proof was Purple Haze and he won the rose.

Quest of Justice - The clue led players to David the Miller at Yew Mill. Apparently, his betrothed (Angeline) had been corrupted and killed by an evil mage called Arkazan. He reveals that Angeline's father Naylor is handling the revenge. Naylor says that he had hired a bounty hunter, Clint Bloodwood, to kill the mage, but he is worried that it is taking a long time. Clint was to be found in one of the taverns in Britain. If bought another drink, he would say that he had found out that Arkazan is now after Angeline's sister, Katrina. The trick here was to realise that the drunken bounty hunter would never be able to remember where Katrina was living. To find that out you had to go back and ask Naylor or David. That would lead you to the Hidden Valley where Arkazan could be found and killed. The first person to complete this and return with the proof was Speedy again.

Quest of Spirituality - I made this one far too hard. Players had to look in AND AROUND the old Virtue shrines for lines of a riddle. I really should have left all the books at each shrine itself, as the first one was. Had you found all the lines, this was the riddle:

1) My first is in Trinsic, but missing from Minoc,
2) My second is in a repository, although never in stock.
3) My third is in the white granules which season what you eat,
4) My fourth is in rye, but never in wheat.
5) My fifth is in wrong, yet also in right.
6) My sixth is in the white chariot that rides the sky at night.
7) My last is always AWOL, but certainly not a dodger.
8) And my whole is a bird who sometimes flies the Jolly Roger!

As nobody had solved this by the end of the event, I said that I would give this rose and the Rose of Truth, to the first two people who could solve it and see me at the tournament. Unfortunately, three of the books apparently decayed soon after and only one person, Missy, got the whole riddle. She teamed up with Whysper, who could not find the missing books, and together they tried to solve it. Eventually Whysper cracked it and the two of them won the roses. Commiserations to Alovia who was also trying to solve it at the end but just missed out.

For anyone trying to solve this riddle now, the answer is at the end of this book.

The rose of Love went to Ginna. The rose of Courage (actually should have been the Truth one) went to Speedy again.

The tournament featured three teams: Speedy and Purple Haze, Henry and Jerk, Calibretto and Sir Morder. Congratulations to Henry and Jerk of NEW for being such good sports despite being obviously outclassed by wealthy and fully skilled opponents. In the end, the contest came down to a fight between the other pair with Speedy and Purple Haze winning. Thanks very much to Soulweaver for providing the arena for us.

I did not intend for one person to win so many of the rewards, but kudos to Speedy. In future I will try and ensure this does not happen.

I want to extend a big thanks to Red the thief for returning the stolen rose. I would like to say that I did not know that he had been banned from the tournament building. I think he may have sent a party message, but I missed it with everything else that was going on. Had I seen it I would have asked the owners to let him in. However, I generally did not try and interfere with the various thieves, even when Chad killed Soulweaver in the arena well after the tournament ended.

Finally, I would like to say thanks to EM Cernunnos for assisting me in the running of the event behind the scenes.

Happy New Year!

Tis the 9th year of the Twentieth Sosarian Calendar!
I declare this, 2009, the year of the lesser-spotted mystic llama herder!

I hope ye will pardon my lengthy silence, good folks of Siege!

Life has become overwhelmingly busy, this past year! All in a good way, but still - it has eaten into the time I get to spend blindly blundering about our unique lands! Hopefully 2009 will give me a little more breathing space!

Still, enough about me! On to Siege Perilous!
I went to Britain yesterday evening, and was lucky enough to bump into our new Event Moderator - Alcor!
It seems that he is currently under house arrest, within Britain's Counselor's Guild - the one near Blackthorn's Castle, not the one in East Britain.

He cannot leave there without the express permission of the Ancient Ones, at least - not yet. However, several of us were able to spend some time talking with him, and a few gave him fashion advice!
From what I hear, this was one of those times when 'twas good to be blind!
Floppy hats, green shoes, and Counselor's robes do not go well together!
Thankfully, there were a few representatives of the Thieves guild present, so he probably won't have them long.

But, fashion was not the order of the day. Siege's newest recipient of Order of The N00B wishes to gain an insight into what we would like to see, in the way of events and celebrations!
So, if ye are in and around Britain over the next few days, it would probably be prudent to visit the Counselor's guild, and pass on thy thoughts to Alcor!
I spoke of my wishes to have events that could appeal to all - no small order, that!
I also mentioned that event which many of us would love to see -
namely, the destruction of Luna! Or at least, to have the appeal of its guard zone reduced!

We spoke of the complexities of Siege, of the troubles of presenting a truly balanced event, that all could enjoy, and of the ins and outs of faction abilities. The weather, the food, and the multiple timepieces we tend to use here, and more besides.

I must point out, good readers, that Alcor is not one of the Ancient Ones. His powers are, at this point, unclear, but he cannot reshape the land at his leisure, he cannot sense where specific items are, and he cannot change the laws of nature with a gesture.
However, he was able to disappear, walk to the other side of the room, and re-appear. Amazing. I've never seen the like. But then, I am blind. So I probably never will.

Now, it appears that the lesser wits in other realms have been woo'd and awed by their Event Moderators, as they have stood by handing out gifts of sashes.
I am glad to say that our moderator is cut from a sterner cloth. Alcor knew that sashes would be sneered at by the hardy folks of Siege - and so he brought a pile of bandages instead! Very fitting, I thought.

Regrettably, he was forbidden to speak at length of future plans and events - it seems the Ancient Ones are watching closely, and are quick to ire, yet slow to forgive!
But, Alcor was able to tell us that great things were coming! Of course, the proof will be in the experience, and probably in the dying!
But, I leave this short news article to ye now - I know not all will be able to speak with Alcor in person, but, if ye leave thy thoughts here, on possible events, I am sure he will hear of them!

May this New Year bring all ye wish, or at least, all ye truly need! And may Alcor's time with us be lengthy, filled with fun, and blessed with a better tailor!

Blind Otto

Standard disclaimer to my critics: No, it's not earth shattering news. It's light hearted. Bah. Humbug. And a Happy New Year to you, too!

TODAY'S TOP STORY
VIOLENCE IN LUNA
There were unsubstantiated reports of violence in and around Luna in the early hours of this morning.
Attempts to interview bystanders were unsuccessful, largely due to the death of our intrepid reporter.
More details will follow. Eventually.

DRAGONS ARE WIMPS! KNIGHTS? WHAT KNIGHTS?
The citizens are revolting.
Why? The cause seems to be simple - the new breed of Dragons. Our intrepid reporter investigated. Then, we sent a less intrepid reporter out, wearing some armor this time.
Dragons. Now, personally, I like dragons. Keeping one in my dungeon has always meant that my tower was warm in winter, and opening random windows as passers-by came near was always good for a laugh.
However, the new breed of these beasts seem to have many people feeling rather unsettled.
To this, I say, good! Ye SHOULD be unsettled! Have ye not noticed yet where ye chose to make thy home?
I say these dragons need to be made even stronger! Faster! And untamable! Have them take flight, and descend on our towns!

Skin care specialists flock to Moonglow

Upon hearing of the dreadful plight of the berzerkers who wander about the streets of Moonglow, a contingent of [QWAK], that intrepid band of healers, physicians, and therapists, have descended on the dark side of that town.
"We cannot bear to see the poor beasts suffer so!" one noted dermatologist commented. "It is high time that Lord British did something about all the spilled poison potions in the rivers! Just look at this poor creature's skin! Won't someone think of the creatures?!?"

A rather confused looking spotty balron was brought forward at this point for demonstration purposes. Please pardon the blood stains on this report.

Best Chest In The West?

A strange occurance, amidst the strange occurances that bedevil Moonglow of late, has come to our attention.
It appears that the treasure chests which the Dark Wisps occasionally carry with them has become sentient!
Aye, chests in large numbers have been mysteriously travelling upstream towards the dark portal, presumably in order to reach their ancient spawning grounds at the foot of someone's bed!

Our staff picture-imp painted this image.

We're not sure why.
A little over two months past, Lord Py Lethius bade farewell to our fair land.

This, many may have thought, meant the end of The Knights of The Silver Serpent.
It is with great joy that I can tell you that it did not.
This past week, two of the most patient, longest suffering ladies that Siege has to offer, finally put aside their Initiates robes, and became soldiers of KSS! A small portion of the ceremony follows:

"Initiate Angharad,
Initiate Alizaren,
we have heard your oaths, and by Mithras, I bind them!
Thy old life is gone, put to death by thy own courage and virtue!
You are reborn to Mithras!
Rise, Sisters of The Silver Serpent!"

The following speech was also given, by thy good editor and Knight Commander.
"As ye probably know, Lord Py Lethius has heard the call of an honorable quest
tis one that takes him to a strange land. One with little or no magic
One where his loved ones of the House of Lethius dwell
and where he will be focusing all his might on their care
That, to my mind, is more worthy a calling than any battle with dragons
or fighting back a thousand foes
But, he created something great in this land
he created a force for justice
He created, at one time, a sense of security in the minds of the weak
I remember when I was newly born into these lands
the relief that was felt when a wave of blue came crashing into those who would kill the weak
We are far from those days now
I cannot promise to return those days.
But, I can promise to try with all I have to give.
I am not Py Lethius. I can only aspire to be Py Lethius. I began as a crafter. He, as a warrior.
But, ye have my commitment, that, as long as I draw breath, The Knights of The Silver Serpent
will never die."

*KSS will be starting to take applications for new initiates, should any be interested. Details can be found on this scroll.

Scavenger Hunt 2008
Scavenger Hunt!

In the wake of a disappointing UO Christmas season, we were today treated to a second part to a very nice UO Valentine's Day. On the day itself, we recieved a nice box, stuffy animals and chocolate, as well as chocolate ingredients to spawn on paragons, if I remember right.

I was curious as how it would come off, without bieng seriously raided or somehow cheated off of. I was pleasantly surprised that is came and went, and was a success too! There was a huge turn out, participants from all sides of the fence. Kudos everyone for the grand participation! We were given lists and told the first five back would win. The way I understood it, the recieving chest would only accept 5 submissions.

After randsacking my own house, I pilfered others of undisclosed origin. But I could not find all the items! So after trading with a couple guild mates, we managed to get one of us submitted in time!

CONGRATS to Kynthia and all the other winners! I would list the other windders but I did not return in time to hear them....or perhaps I am just a biased reporter. *shrugs*

At the end, to everyone's surprise, a bazillion rare blue bunnies spawned... and promptly died.

Ahh....Siege.

KSS Truth. Courage. Honor. KSS

The old blind man stood before his friend and leader, slack-jawed with shock and horror.
Knight Commander Py Lethius
"Nay, sire! It cannot be! Say tis not so! There must be another way!"

The old warrior placed a firm hand on Otto's shoulder, shaking his head, although he knew the movement would not be seen.
"My dear friend, there IS no other way. We Knights of the Silver Serpent have ever done our duty, no matter the cost, no matter how high the price. But, if I do not walk this path, then the price would be too high for even me to endure."

They stood in mutual silence, both knowing that the end of an era had come.

Then, the Knight Commander spoke:
"Sir Otto, as the highest ranking Knight still to walk the land, I pass to you the sword of leadership. I do not envy you the road ahead. What was once a mighty legion of knights, mages, and other warriors, is now a faint ember of what it was. But, that ember still burns. Do your best. No one can ask more."

"My destiny calls, as do the voices of those I love more than life itself. Be safe, and be true!"

And, with a final salute, Lord Py Lethius turned, and stepped through a glowing portal, to a strange land beyond. A land devoid of magic, but filled with strange devices, and stranger people.
The land of the Spirit Realm. The land where his closest kin awaited him with open arms.

The old miner weighed the sword that had been placed in his hand. It seemed to glow with energy, but more so, with the power of the legend that had been written by Py Lethius.

Turning to the window, with a heavy heart, he called to the townsfolk below.
"Good people of Sosaria, lend me your ears!"

There was a brief shower of severed ears, swiftly scooped up by the deranged mayor of Luna, but then Otto could hear the townsfolk standing attentively below.

"Good friends, countrymen, and citizens of Sosaria, I bring you dark tidings.
On this day, did Lord Py Lethius set foot on the path that leads away from our lands for the final time.
He lives yet - do not mourn his passing in that way - but it is safe to say that this is a quest from which he will most likely not return.
Join with me then, in a moment's silence, to honor this great man, who did so much for our lands!"

A stunned silence fell over the crowd below.

Then, one by one, the people came forward, bringing tales of valor, memories of encounters with the great man, and word of lives he had saved, monsters he had driven back, all in their defence.

Join with me now, good friends of Siege, and let us remember Py Lethius, and all he was to us, in his time here - on Siege Perilous.

Please do not misunderstand, good people. This is not an obituary. Nothing serious has happened to Py.
This is a farewell, and an opportunity to honor one of the great men of Siege.

Events in his life have become such that he can no longer walk the dusty paths of Siege Perilous.
As the life he lived with us here was honorable, so too are his reasons for saying farewell.

So, let us do honor to all he meant to us, and all he did for Siege!

Blind Otto turned from the window, and pondered the sword in his hand once more.

"You know," he remarked to no one in particular, "I could have sworn I was a miner and blacksmith."

He sheathed the sword, and stood up.
"Well, miner, knight, or, if they'll have me, Knight Commander, one thing is certain. As long as I draw breath, KSS will not die!"

From a far off land, came a familiar voice, sounding the Knights war cry

SOL INVICTUS!

When I first encountered Py Lethius, I was still a member of [NEW].
VmP had surrounded the guildhouse, and were casting poison fields and other spells inside.
Thankfully, this was in the days before the Samurai lands were discovered, and before the Elves had returned, with their natures furies and other spells.
Still, there were no [NEW] leaders around, and none of us had enough skill to resurrect each other if we died.

Then, this wave of blue warriors arrived, cutting the vampires down in their path, and sending them howling off into the caves and shadows of the northern mountains.

They were led by a grey-haired commander, who made a bee-line for WyRm, the leader of the vampires.
Yelling his battle cry, and flanked by two healers, he made short work of the vampire lord.
Once the last vampire was dead or fled, the Knights of the Silver Serpent entered the guild house, to heal the wounded, raise the dead, and, once all had calmed down enough, spent their time offering training advice, supplying resources, and providing encouragment.

Truly, an inspiration. He fought with honor, and insisted on the highest standards from those who followed him.
He refused to allow dry looting, mount killing, or rez-killing.
No member of KSS was ever to call on guards against an enemy.
Enemies were always to be resurrected when possible and treated with honor.

And that is just one handful of examples of his standards. More can be read here.
But, I will leave it to you to tell your own tales of this fine man, and good friend.
Or, as the case may be to some of you, worthy foe.

So, let us hear it - what are your memories of Py Lethius, people of Siege? Bring us your pictures, your memories, your tributes - to give a fitting farewell to this living legend of Siege!

Chalupa's Charitable Castle Clean-up

Luna! City of paladins, virtue and light!

Oh, and banksitters, notos, PKs and accusations of scamming. But who cares about that lot?

Although dear Otto despises the place, and avoids it like the plague, I occasionally go for a stealth around, just to keep up with whatever's going on there!
I was glad that I had last night. Chalupa had chosen the middle of Winter to do some spring-cleaning!

I was lurking around, listening to the usual chatter, and the sounds of Otto snoring upstairs.

Chalupa And then, in twinkling, I heard a moongate,
Ripping its way through time and space,
As I turned to retire to the land of dream,
Chalupa, of DTA fame, appeared on the scene!

He was dressed in black, from his head to his foot,
Apart from a green apron, which looked pretty good.
He staggered under the weight of the goods on his back,
And grinned as he reached into his pack.

The snowglobes how they twinkled! The gift boxes looked merry!
The snowmen half-melted, the tree-deeds too many!
He gave out leg-bones, pixie swatters, and an old juka bow,
And many, many snowballs that we all started to throw!

Well, I think I'd probably better leave the odd rhymes to Otto. Anyway, you get the idea!

The end result was that many of us ended up trying to stuff the contents of his castle into our rather small bank boxes, backpacks, and the occasional pack llama or beetle!

Time after time, he vanished through a moongate, only to re-appear moments later, littering the floor with all sorts of items from seasons past!
Snowmen, snowflakes, minor artifacts, deeds, potted plants, crystal snowglobes, and much more came flying out of his pack, as those gathered scurried about trying to grab something exceptional off the floor!

Say what you will about decorative things, and those addicted to pixels, Luna was a busy place!

Chalupa was enjoying his role as Father Christmas just as much as his role as the pied piper, and successfully led some of us near the edge of the town!
So, a tip to any who want to get their targets out of the guard zone - bring lots of festive trinkets! Hee!

The crowd grew and grew, until Chalupa finally ran out of goodies to give away!
Ending his stint as Santa with a few black pumpkins and a last handful of snowglobes, he withdrew a large check, and disappeared into the night!

Many thanks, Chalupa, from all of us who were there! You could easily have thrown it all in the trash barrel, but you took the time and effort to brighten up our evening!

Now, can someone please give me a free castle, or a free storage expansion token?
My home is starting to look like Homer Simpson at an all-you-can-eat buffet!

It's a wonderful life: Idealism in UO.

It's a wonderful life: Idealism in UO.

In the 1947 film, James Stewart plays a man who set aside all of his dreams to help his hometown community. We see not only the outward saintliness of such a person, but also the dredges of his discouragement, depression, hatefulness and despair. I mention this, not to belittle the greatness of idealism, but only to point out the pain that goes along with selfless love and giving. These types of individuals are few and far between. They are the Davids against the Goliaths of modern society, and most of the time, they do not win. They perservere on faith alone. Faith in the goodness of humanity and the worthiness of man.

I have read and heard many discouragements about UO's Christmas gifts and some of EA's recent decisons so close to the holiday season. As in real life, the workings of indiviuals have a far reaching effect on an entire community. Many have found UO to be home and family, and fear that the powers-that-be are not concerned with thier welfare. Perhaps they are right. Perhaps not. Time will tell.

But there is one man, who has spent a lot of his own time to make the UO communitie's holiday cheerful. Most of you will know I speak of the explosive personality of Draconi. Because of timely EA changes, there was not the manpower to create and QA festivities on each shard. There is too much chance of mistakes that would lead to irrepairable losses. But Draconi went ahead and build us a wonderous Winterland as a test shard. As a test shard, any UO player can hop in, max his skills immediately and join in on the fun, without fear of loss of hard earned gametime on his own shard. I will point out also, Draconi has spent countless of his own hours working on this...time away from friends, family, christmas shopping and other RL festivities that most of us have been enjoying.

So, step with me into this cheery Wonderland....and don't forget your sunglasses!

First off, at the Bank of Britain, you will see decorations and special dye tubs. I suppose I should say 'SPECIAL' special dye tubs, for with them you may dye anything any color on the UO color scale, including the shineys and flourescents. Close by is The Tunnel of Love, with mistletoe that grants you something special when you kiss someone. A little ways north is a giant wintery christmas wishing tree. Many folks I know of are wishing for an NPC for Aeric, but whatever your wishes for UO are, this is one way to have them heard. Next to the tree on one side is a stage with musicians, and on the other side are two moongates. One leads to the party location and the other to the snowball fight arena.

The party was..outrageous. This was where the sunglasses would have been handy, for everyone was decked out as brightly as they could stretch those special dye tubs. Many UHall folks were in attendance, as well as shard reporters. Special appearances were made by Draconi and Jeremy, but anyone who thought to use this as an interview opportunity were quickly drowned out by a number of drunk mages and singers.

Later the party moved outside where Draconi had his old Luna cannons set up, but this time the ammo was green apples. And the targets were various EA staff, accountants and developers, who shouted out humorous excuses for all thier mistakes and happenstances. A trivia contest was then held in the upstairs of the bank, by Prince Caspian, but eventually had to be moved because of griefers.

Incidently, the party may be over, but loaded cannons still await anyone who has a grief against UO or EA, so hop on over and take your best shot!

As if this all wasn't enough, there is also the snowball arena. Folks can team up and have it out! So start trash talking your neighboring shards and lets make effective use of this opportunity. And when your done, I am sure Draconi could use a thank you. He has done all of this... for you.

There is a dark and light side to the idealist. They are discouraged that so many of us do not see the world as they do, that so many are blind to the light. As such, both sides of the idealist live together in disharmony, waiting for those rare times when the world can, for one moment... touch greatness. I have had the priviledge to get to know another idealist over the course of this year. I have seen his dark and his light and I love them both. For they are the makings of Hope.

Rubble, rubble, with apologies to David Bowie
*sings*
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo-doo doo doo doo doo

They've got Magincia in a whirl
We're not sure if more rubble will fall
A daemon rez-killed me tonight
Hey Siege, lets go killing tonight
You looted me, balrons killed us all
We hate 'zerks, the spotty swine,
We've got arties, mine all mine,
We want more and we want it fast,
The next invaders are here at last,
A bard died trying to play them a song,
So come a-slaying Siege, they won't be here long.

Rubble, rubble... well, that's enough of that!

(With profound apologies to the two David Bowie fans lurking at the back over there)

Blind Otto reporting!

Well, the past few days it was begining to appear that we had routed the invaders.
The light daemons were growing weaker, as were their darker brothers.
It had been a long time since any berzerkers had been seen, and imp corpses were as common as rubble.
Had we won? Had they given up? Could we all go back to killing each other outside Luna?

Thankfully, not.

This morning, the hardy adventurers picking through the rubbble that was once the proud town of Magincia found the moongate protected by some strange energy beings.
Magincia Moongate
These "rift guardians" resembled energy vortexes, but energy vortexes did very little to harm them!
I stood and listened to the battle for a while, and found all manner of attacks failing.
My own fairly well trained hiryu died in the time it took me to cover the three steps to where it had gone to attack one of the creatures.
Mages fell left, right and center. Bards struggled to calm the creatures, and the berzerkers they summoned.
Very little worked. Utterly fatigued, I withdrew, to regain my strength, and heal my hiryu, cursing the foul hellspawn that chased me all the way to the Magincian docks!

Then I sent my loyal scribe in. After all, what good is it to have lackys if ye make no use of them?

Beatrice Quill here!

Lackey?!? LACKEY?!?!?! See how many waffles YOU get for breakfast this morning, bub!

Ahem. Yes. Right. *mutters* Lackey my bright blue... anyway...

As Blind Otto said, the defenders of the gate were impressive.
The berzerkers, however, were not as hardy. I came across Lord Kush, Lady AEowyn, and others, who had successfully slain one such creature near the Council of Mages base.
Dead Zerk
Where the vaunted council was, and why they had let their island home be overrun, was anyone's guess, but I hear they recently turned over managment to an incompetant Scotsman, which could explain matters somewhat.

Heading back up to the gate, I found some members of TnT, Red, and a few others desperately trying to overcome the rift's guardians.

Nothing seemed to work. A barrage of about 10 energy vortexes barely scratched the beasts, and they utterly ignored the fields of poison and flame that I poured on them.

I suspect a warrior or a paladin may do better, but my magery was fairly useless.
I did find, however, that speaking words learned during the Orphidian invasion, namely "An Sanct Flam", dispelled the flame fields that the guardians had around them.
Nasty stuff - leaping black flames, giving off who knows what kind of energy. Still, running up to it and shouting those words seemed to do the trick!
Once the flames were out, the guardians seemed a LITTLE less invulnerable, and even began to teleport to the spot where I stood, now and then.
I died. A lot. These things will not fall easily.

It does seem that some new treasures and souveniers are to be had - Red was very kind, and gave me one such item, which is now taking up the middle of my upper floor, until I can decide where to put it!
Dead Zerk

Anyway, back to the blind one, unless someone's 'accidentally' pushed him out the window again, or something.
*mutters* I'll give you lackey - wait until the next time I wash the flagstones at the top of the stairs! *mutters*

Blind Otto here again!

Ahem. Yes. Did I say 'lackey'? I meant 'greatly valued confidant, friend, and trusted ally'! In an obscure orcish dialect that not even Mo'gluk has heard of, that sounds a lot like 'Lackey'. Is anyone actually believing this? No? Oh well then...
I am sure we will hear from the expert fighters out in the field before too long, saying that the invasion is routed!
In the meantime, anyone who wants to stand around on the Trinsic docks selling potions, bandages, reagents, and other such items will probably make a fair profit!
Be safe, and avoid hugging berzerkers!

(no, really. It's south-trinsic orcish. They're all extinct now, or I'd take you there. Really. OW!

Magincia under Siege

>>> Felucca Facet News <<<

Unless ye have been hiding (probably in terror) under a rock for the past fortnight, ye will be aware that the fair city of Magincia is under attack by an assortment of demonic creatures.

It seems that the cowardly guards of the ursurper British have fled, finding the onslaught to be too much for them, leaving the townsfolk defenceless, save for the efforts of the citizens of Siege Perilous, most notably a blind, brave, modest (and handsome) Knight of the Silver Serpents!

Until now, that is.

The townsfolk have errected blockades at key positions in the town.
There is also rumor that a shipment of canons are on their way, to supplement the rusting ones currently in use near the docks.
Until recently, these two aging weapons were on display in someone's garden, having not seen use since the great turnip invasion of '09.
Still, they seem to be keeping the monsters away. For now.

Medics have also set up station near the cannons, and a travelling banker has erected a small table nearby.

There was, however, great jubilation at the sight of the backs of the British millitia fleeing across the waters.
Not just from the monsters, either. There has been an uneasy air of co-operation between adventurer and brigand, between villain and hero, and murderer and defender, over the past few days, as they worked together to fend off the monsters.
Whether that will continue, or the demons will become mere observers in the true battle of Magincia, remains to be seen.
In related news, there are also rumors that the rate of monsters carrying rare loot has diminshed slightly.
Still, there are many cursed items to be found appearing in the backpacks of defenders, as their guardians fall to the ground.
There are the occasional mystic items to be found in the corpses of those same monsters, most notably the light and void demons.
And, the Dark Fathers still give the greatest rewards of all - fabled artifacts free from vile curses, if ye can stand the stench of their carriers!
A strange person guarding a blood-splattered box has also appeared to the east of the town, appearing to be a priest of Mondain, but with little of their normal skill. Is he friend or foe, or something worse? Time will tell.

Lastly, there seems to be some debate amongst the citizens of the land as to what the Arcane Daemons are actually saying.
Some believe it to be "Need more pork", making some wonder if a gateway to the fabled city of Ankh-Morpork is on the horizon.
Others feel that they are discussing poultry, while a few have heard them asking for tickets to something or other.
What do you believe these strange creatures are saying? Let us know! Answers on a severed imp wing!
Down with that scurvy lord British!

Layoffs & Restructuring at EA/Mythic

>>> Felucca Facet News <<<From Joshua Rowan, UO Stratics Managing Editor:

Right on the heels of hearing from Chris Rabideau (UO Producer) that the entire Ultima Online Development Team is going to be shipped off to Virginia, we're now getting word from sources at EA/Mythic of significant layoffs that took place today too (October 24). Aaron Linde over at Destructoid has the most comprehensive story to date about it, so I direct you to a quote from his article titled Restructuring, layoffs forthcoming at EA, Mythic Studios:

Owing to sagging profits and and a less-than-firm grip on their once invulnerable spot at top of the third party heap, Electronic Arts is looking to make some changes in their corporate structure, starting with Mythic and their Redwood Shores studio. An internal email from a trustworthy source who wishes to remain anonymous reveals that John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, has tasked every studio and company within the monolithic publisher with getting their rising costs in line with revenue, which in plain English means layoffs.

The email from Mythic VP Rob Denton was sent to all employees of Mythic and details some of the plans to reduce costs by cutting jobs as well as some actions already taken. Headcount will be managed through "attrition, performance management, stricter hiring guidelines and layoffs". Over the next two months, the Ultima Online team will be moving from EA Redwood Shores to Mythic's Fairfax, VA studio to streamline operations. Meanwhile, a number of employees at both studios have already been let go as of earlier today, with more to follow as EA tightens its belt in the coming months.

For more details, make sure to check out the complete article

As UO Stratics gains more information and details about these developments we will make sure to let you know. Stay tuned.
