Join us this week as we dig into accuracy calculations, enhancing, perfection, and more! And don't forget - the Jacksonville Town Hall is tomorrow!

"Why do I seem to miss so often when using Archery?"

I've seen several variations on this question, so Leurocian scoured the accuracy code for me, and we did not find anything that would specifically affect Archery accuracy (with one exception, covered below.) Accuracy in general is a fairly complex topic with many variables, so it's a tricky thing to test at the best of times. Here's an explanation of the different factors - if anyone sees any results that aren't consistent with this, please let us know!

Attacker's stats: Weapon skill and Hit Chance Increase are the stats the formula uses on the attacker's side. HCI is increased by HCI items and decreased by the defender's Hit Lower Attack, if any.

Defender's stats: Weapon skill and Defense Chance Increase are the stats the formula uses on the defender's side. DCI is increased by DCI items and decreased by the attacker's Hit Lower Defense, if any. (Exception below.)

Barehanded defense: If the defender is not using a weapon, "weapon skill" will be EITHER Wrestling skill OR (Anatomy + Evaluating Intelligence + 20) / 2; whichever is greater (which means that if you have none of these skills and are barehanded, you'll have a functional weapon skill of 10.)

Mage Weapons and Use Best Weapon Skill: UBWS uses whichever weapon skill is highest, and Mage Weapons use Magery (with whatever penalties listed on the weapon) assuming it's higher than the appropriate weapon skill for that weapon.

The minimum chance to hit is always at least 2%. If both attacker and defender have the same weapon skill and HCI/DCI, the chance to hit is 50%.

But wait, there's more!

Attacks can be parried or evaded - those are completely different calculations that happen after the hit chance is calculated. If you're trying to track your accuracy, make sure you're taking parried or evaded attacks into account.

Archery has one more caveat - if you move, it resets the swing cycle. There's only one place where this might break the swing - between the "swing" and the "hit" calculations - and we couldn't make it break in a few minutes of testing, but it's possible that a move could break the swing and it would look exactly like a miss, when in fact the attack was simply aborted. Archers, hold still!

The actual formula is conveniently listed in the question below!

"The formula for Hit Chance on Stratics is: Hit Chance% = ( ( [Attacker's Combat Ability + 20] * [100% + Attacker's Hit Chance Increase] ) divided by ( [Defender's Combat Ability + 20] * [100% + Defender's Defense Chance Increase] * 2 ) ) * 100

Does HLD lower the defender's combat ability by 25%? Does HLA lower the attacker's combat ability by 25%? Or are both applied to the DCI and HCI portion of the calculation?"

HLA/HLD are directly applied to the HCI/DCI portion of the equation - when the HLA/HLD effect goes off, it reduces HCI or DCI by 25 (and yes, it can make that value negative.)

"Is the change of colored ore spawning a straight 100% calculation or is it 50/50 to be colored and then a second roll for the type of ore?"

Each ore type has a different percentage chance to be chosen, but it is a single random roll.

"Is there any difference in the success chance between enhancing wooden items or leather and metal?"

Not necessarily - success chance is actually a function of the intensity of the properties you're changing and the number of properties on the item, not which skill you're using. Of course enhancing armor with gold, which affects six properties (bonuses to four resists, luck, and lower requirements) is, in general, more likely to fail than enhancing a weapon with bloodwood, which only affects two (hit point regeneration and hit life leech,) but if that weapon already has near-max intensity on either of those properties, or has several other properties, it may have a smaller chance of success.

In short, while determining the actual success chance of enhancing is complicated and depends on several variables, all the crafting skills use the same formula.

"Why does perfection, step 9, always return the same or less damage than step 8? I have verified this over a run of 200 honors, and step 9 is ALWAYS less than or equal to step 8."

There are a couple of things happening here - first of all, the size of the damage bonus increase is dependant on your Bushido skill. Second, it's capped at 100%. Third, it's a percentage boost to your damage, so the total damage is dependant on the base damage of your weapon, which is variable.

With Legendary Bushido, you'll be at a 96% damage bonus at step 8, and you'll hit the cap of 100% bonus at step 9 - with only a 4% increase, the extra damage will likely get lost in rounding even if your base swing is the same (decimals get truncated, so the base damage would have to be at least 25 to see even a 1-point increase.) And weapons have a variable damage per swing - it's a random roll within a range - so it's absolutely possible for your actual damage to drop.

Playguide Update Roundup:

No Playguide updates this week, but more are on the way once I'm back in the office next week.

What's To Come:

A few more confirmed bug fixes for the next publish:

  • Greater dragons are visibly named "Greater dragons"
  • Fixed a couple of worldbuilding trouble spots (places where folks would get stuck - one in Wrong, one in Magincia.)
  • Made several fixes that we ain't telling you about until they're live on all shards ;)
  • Jacksonville Town Hall

The Jacksonville Town Hall is tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing all of you there!

For our mid-Atlantic players, the May Town Hall meeting is also posted - you can get details on the Town Hall Page and RSVP for that one as well. If you're in the neighborhood, don't miss out!

Heading out to Jacksonville now - if I don't see you, have a great weekend!

    Revitalization of Luna

    >>> Malas News <<<As we're all aware, people have often questioned the state of Luna and compared it to what the West Britain Bank used to be. But Luna isn't all that bad! Special thanks to Ailish, who wrote this great commentary on Luna and its current state of affairs:

    The Revitalization Of Luna

For many months now, Luna has been a mostly quiet place, with merchants' houses sitting empty, idle. Shopping was a painful task; finding what you needed difficult.

Recently, though, something has changed ...

Some shops have traded hands, and others have re-opened their doors to renters with wares to sell. Even as the homes of those branded traitors burn in silent warning, a walk around the city shows new vendors cropping up everywhere.

Today, in the northwest quadrant of the city, there is a bustle of activity with the re-opening of Joanna of PvB's shop. The spaces are filling up quickly and a large variety of goods is available - there seems to be something for everyone!

Turning the corner and heading east you come across the Grand Opening of Nabin's newest house, The Fire Robe Vendor House. Here you can find armor of all sorts, artifacts, and supplies, as well as a few other interesting and useful good.

Right next door to the east, Shop Til You Drop has opened for business, stocking Peerless Ingredients, recipes, repair deed and more. While it is a mere open aired dirt plot, the goods available make it worth a stop.

Into the northeast quadrant, the Imperial Fortress of BDE has began stocking with tokens and a few other high end items. While the vendors here are still a bit scant, there is hope that they will be fully stocked soon.

Directly in the northeast corner of town, there has been alot of new activity, with the opening of Mudd's Market selling many different weapons and armors, as well as most artifacts imaginable. Tucked away right in the corner you will find the newly revitalized Vendor House selling nearly everything imaginable and often renting out new spots at very afordable prices.

Turning the corner and moving south you see that The Foundry has re-opened its doors to business. While today shows many of the vendors on the steps sold out of items, inside you find newly stocked vendors selling wares of all sort.

Moving into the southeast quadrant, again many new vendors are found. Here you find that Joanna has re-opened the PvB Vendor Mall & Auction House. While there is only a single vendor here at this time, I am told that we can expect to see more in the coming weeks. Across the way is The Happy Rose, owned by Acacia Rose with many interesting goodies for sale.

Tucked deep in the corner, and easy to miss if you are not looking for it, is an unnamed shop selling quite a few items including high-end rubble and ingredients, Marks of Travesty and even a Crimson Cincture. Right next door, Vampy's Garden Party Vendors is seeing a new flow of goods, with Runic Hammers, whole sets of resist armor and even some Powder of Fortifying and Pet Balls.

To the west, Medieval Merchants is slowly coming to life selling armor.

Finally, in the southwest, next to the burning rubble of the house of a traitor, you can find Dawn's Vendors, where many crafted goods are to be had.

Yes, it definitely appears that Luna is coming back to life! Perhaps this is only a snapshot of what is happening in the fine Napa Valley ... having seen with sadness the fall of too many homes, we can hope that new friends are arriving and that old friends are coming home.

Luna is definitely the best mall around... and it's sure seen some excitement lately! It used to only have one burning building (thanks to a hostile raid in the city), but now we can add a couple more to the tally. Luna sure needs to upgrade their firefighting team!

Thanks for the report, Ailish! Safe travels, everyone!

On The Go With Chango: Wrong Place, Right Time

There I was, another lonely Monday night. The night was still young and the rum hadn't quite kicked in yet. I was running the pool table at the local tavern when fighting erupted outside.

VaMp and -62- members were fighting and I was curious as to the reason. Was it over an insult? Maybe an unsettled debt? Nope, it was over the Harrower in the Dungeon Wrong.

    *Shinobi Time*

I had to see for myself... sure beat playing pool alone again.

Apparently it was an invitation only party and I didn't want to bother the bouncers at the entrance, so I let myself in.

I had tracked the action to the second level of the dungeon where the True Harrower was almost dead by the time I reached it.

The wall leading into the room with the Harrower was as close as I could get. The door was being fielded and again, I didn't want to bother those inside.

I was expecting an attempt to overtake the Harrower by opposition, but the location was perfect to defend against. It wasn't too long before the evil one was killed.

With the door continuing to be fielded, I knew I had no chance of getting a word with those inside, so I headed back out to the entrance.

It seemed all was finished and I said my farewells before heading back to the tavern.

Not bad for a Monday night. To both sides in this battle, well played and I look forward to future encounters.

    CCC Luna Vendor House Giveaway

acivier and Crystal Canyon of CCC are giving away a Luna Vendor House in honor of the birth of thier grandson, Levon Martae on February 7th, 2008. The birth of this grandson was long awaited.

The two proud and grateful grandparents want to thank all the wonderful people of Origin for all the prayers and thoughts over the last year which culminated in the arrival of Levon. It was a struggle with a wonderful end result.

These two pillars of our small community, Bacivier and Crystal, feel they can never express sufficient gratitude to all who cared, listened and proved that we are not just pixels  in a game but friends.

All this week, you will find runes in Luna, on the ground, that say "CCC Vendors". Pick them up. On Saturday night, March 1, at 7P Central, Bacivier and Crystal will be at the special Luna House Giveaway location designated by only one of the runes dropped. If your rune brings you to this location, you will become the proud owner of that Luna House.

All of the runes are to safe locations. The Luna House is in the SW corner of the Luna Mall. Good luck to all of Origin. As you pick up runes and use them Saturday night, think of the generosity of these true Origin Originals.

The Phoenix Rises (by Cat Crimson)

The Phoenix Rises (by Cat Crimson)

It started as a whisper... a quiet voice... a few words dropped here and there, about the emptiness of the Moonglow Royal Britannian Zoo on Drachenfels. Newly returned to the lands of Sosaria after long weary journeyings elsewhere, I decided to see for myself. A nice leisurely stroll from the moongate to stretch my legs was just what I needed. Cuffing the odd cheeky anklebiting mongbat out of the way, I arrived and wandered about to find that the rumours were true... the Zoo was empty and desolate. Not an animal to be seen. Only bare pens, ornately engraved but fading plaques describing the long forgotten occupants and the sound of the wind ruffling the nearby trees.

It might have stayed this way forever... except for a few hardy souls who were determined to revive the Zoo, not to let it be a parable for Drachenfels' supposed deadness. After a little hesitation, I joined them, knowing there was not much I could do to help but that even a little time and money was worthwhile in a joint effort. There were indeed some enticing gifts to be had for those that accumulated enough points but the real reward would be seeing the Zoo filling up again once more.

As the days went on, I saw more and more people come and go, donating money or stray animals to the cause. The word was spreading, through many different and mysterious ways - including the hundreds of runes Lady Jessica Goldfox dropped throughout Sosaria during her tireless taming sessions. There were some incredibly generous donations, some from old friends, some from new, and some from strangers who we did not even get a chance to find out who they were. The sight, sounds and even *coughcough* the smells of the varied species of returning occupants were a joy to the senses.

Not only was the Royal Zoo coming back to life, but there was so much pleasure to be found in the people that hurried to and for helping. More congenial conversation in a few days than I have had in Sosaria in many a long year. People from all kinds of places speaking different languages but all giving unstintingly of their time and their money. Assistance, advice, laughter and kindnesses exchanged left right and centre. The sadness I had felt at returning to these lands and seeing so many places I knew altered or people gone began to lift.

I was also highly amused at the response from my unicorn when I pondered aloud as to why so many animals who often prove too haughty or unwilling or downright aggrieved when us feeble mortals try to persuade them to share our lives, were so meekly agreeing to trot along in such great numbers to the Zoo. She let out a noise that was halfway between a silvery snort and a choking laugh, and whispered in my ear that the blue box at the Zoo, unbeknownst to the taming populace, acted not only as a collection for gold but as a magical transporter for animals, birds and reptiles - once "transferred" to the box, they were teleported exactly back to where they came from and therefore had no fear in stepping up to it when taken there... she knew she could trust me with this great secret... As I would not tell the other humans... OOPS! Sorry, Feste!

But the best was yet to come. Late Wednesday night, I arrived at the Zoo wearily leading yet another secretly snickering unicorn up to the blue box… I could not believe my eyes... 13'795'103 points... Tier 11! My mouth fell agape wider than any village idiot's... I rushed inside... yes... there was the Sphynx... and best of all... the Silver Steed! I could hardly see this rare and beautiful creature for the tears running down my face.

Later I found out that this amazing creature was there due to the generosity of one André von Saxon, who donated all his hard and honestly earned cash partly as a gesture against those of dubious honesty in our lands whose greed eats away at our community and economy, partly as a devoted tribute to someone very dear to him. Thank you Adam Randall for not only telling us of your friend but also your own contribution and your spreading the word about the Zoo across other worlds. Thank you EVERYONE for helping, whether it be with a couple of wolves or a handful of loose change or with hours of taming and millions of gold donated, to all of you with great hearts and deep pockets. From 0 – Tier 11 in less than two weeks, and to be Number One in the Madam Tina Small’s Zoo point by Shard scroll, is a wonderful achievement, but from a shard that has a smaller population and has been derisively called “ dead “, it is outstanding. Let us keep not only the Zoo collection but the community spirit going!

    ~ Cat Crimson

    *

    Ahab Best Archer of 2008!

aturday, February 23 the archers of Origin arrived at the East Britain Calvary Guild in Fel for the 2008 Best Archer Championship. Was a great turnout for our small community with over 17 participants and seven guilds.

While everyone is applauded for thier efforts, the three top winners were Ahab with a score of 200 (awarded 1 million and an engraved bow), Zora with 160 who took home 500K and Thrace, awarded 250K for a score of 150 her first round and 200 on the second. There was no shoot off.

Georgia Ann and Mia made and served a wonderful array of food to go with the drinks served.

And while imbibing in drink and getting full on the food, those who strived to win but failed, continued to hone thier skills in hopes of doing better next year. We all applaud Barik Brightaxe who truly came and shot with a great penalty as he had to use an elven crafted bow. The contest committee will take this into consideration for next year's contest.

"While Discorded, do your skills gain as if you were your actual skill level or the level that your skill drops to?"

Your Discorded skill level is used to calculate your skill gain chance - so for difficulty-based skills, you can gain skill by using abilities or spells that would normally be too easy. This isn't capped at all. There's an explanation of difficulty-based skills here - keep in mind that moderately difficult (50% success rate or so) abilities have the best chance to earn you skill gains.

    --

"How do you recharge the Jacob's Pickaxe when it says Uses Remaining : 0?"

Wait! It recharges uses over time - one charge every 5 minutes. You don't have to be logged in to recharge it, although it may take a few minutes to "catch up." (It also will only recharge to its max of 20 charges.)

    --

"Are there tameables that have skills that don't appear on the Animal Lore gump? If so, which ones are they and what skills do they have that we can't see? Any chance you guys can add these skills to the Animal Lore gump?"

    Leurocian says,

"Yes - Parry and Lumberjacking immediately come to mind. It would be nice at some point to revamp the Animal Lore gump to include more information. No promises!"

(The fact that there can be "invisible" skills is why it's impossible to calculate the barding difficulty by hand, and why Animal Lore does it for you. We don't have a convenient way to look up every possible critter, but revamping the gump has gone on my Nag List.

    --

"How, exactly, does the talisman bonus % to success and exceptional work?"

It's additive - so if you have a 50% chance of success (or exceptional) and put on a +25% talisman, you'd have a 75% chance of success (or exceptional.)

The altered percentage should be displayed in the crafting menu - however, if you are looking at an item's page and you add or remove a talisman, you will have to refresh the page (by going back to the main menu or closing/reopening the window) in order to see the change.

    --

"Where are the other Town Halls going to be this year?"

I'll have specific dates and locations as we get confirmation, but here's the broad overview:
    • Jacksonville, FL - next weekend
    • Rockville, MD - May 10
    • San Diego, CA - summer
    • Seattle, WA - later summer
    • Austin, TX - fall
    • Chicago, IL - winter

    Playguide Update Roundup:

Got the equipment info in slightly better shape, and I'm working my way through old publish notes - slowly, but surely!

Item Properties: Rewrote the Mana and Life Leech bits several times - they may even be accurate now.

Runic Properties: Edited explanatory text to match new intensity changes.

Shields: Brought back this page, added strength requirement, and rewrote the text to be accurate post-AoS.

Armor: Added SE and Elven base armor set details. (Note - haven't added the new helms yet.)

Artifacts: Redesigned page to accomodate future updates - if you haven't seen the artifact screenshot submission request, go check it out!

Siege Perilous: Added Siege Blessing info

Damage Types: Added a brief note on direct damage.

Skill and Stat Caps: Added individual stat caps.

Necromancy: Clarified Vampiric Embrace life drain, added correct duration and damage for Poison Strike.

Ninjitsu: Added melee-only restriction to Ki Attack.

Spellweaving: Corrected Word of Death's damage type.

Bushido: Added Honorable Execution not applying to PvP and weapon skill bonus for Evasion duration.

    --

    What's To Come:

I've got a list of confirmed bug fixes for the next publish back from QA - we're still a couple weeks out from getting it to test, but here's what's done so far:
    • Weapons should no longer lose properties when runic- or exceptionally-crafted. This should apply to everything, including ML recipe weapons
    • ML recipe bows will be able to be exceptionally crafted and get the Arms Lore bonus as well
    • Greater Dragons will give scales and barbed leather
    • Armor that doesn't have a meditation penalty - like leather armor - won't lose properties when runic-crafted
    • Runic-crafted elven armor won't roll Night Sight as a property
    • Parasitic, Darkglow, and Invisibility potions can be placed into kegs

A Mysterious Note and a Missing Lady

Posted on Sunday, February 24, 2008, 11:27 AM EST by Lady Katherine (Chesapeake)
The following note was shown to me by Se'an Silverfoot of the Army of the Dragon [ATD], who found it lying on the steps outside his house in PaxOku.

An image of the note that was received

If this note is genuine, it appears to be written by Lady Hester Tarian, Guildmistress of The Crest of Courageous Hearts [*CH*]. It is known that she had been attacked by an ethereal intruder and strangely poisoned. She was resting and recovering at her home near Yew. People I have talked to report not having seen her in several weeks, so it is possible that she has been missing for some time.

It is unknown to whom the note was addressed to or for whom it was meant to be delivered, or how it managed to be delivered in the first place. Se'an told me he has met Lady Hester, but does not know her well, so he thinks it unlikely that the letter was intended to be delivered to him. *CH* is a PaxOku guild, though, so perhaps it was meant to be delivered to someone else in the city. That may be the best place for those interested in helping her to look.

More details will be posted as they become known.

    >>> Ilshenar News <<<Hello all,

Hagrid is planning a massive hunting event Saturday, March 1st. The event will be a day-long fundraiser for the Royal Zoo, and will be divided into three parts. Each part will be a fight at a Champion Spawn point, with the idea being that freshly tamed Greater Dragons will have had a chance to bond with their owners by then. Feel free to bring any kind of pet you like, of course, but be prepared to see plenty of tamers showing off their newest firebreathing friends! Not a tamer? Not a problem! Bring your best weapon or spellbook and jump right into the battle.

To get starting times, locations, and all the details, be sure to check out this thread.

With any luck, the new Greater Dragons will rip through each Champion's minions and thousands upon thousands of gold will be raised to help keep the Catskills Zoo stocked with animals.

    Tamers Trounce Destard's Dragons
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008, 4:33 PM EST by Lord Franklin (Catskills)
    >>> Trammel Facet News <<<Hello everyone,

Wednesday was an action-packed evening for the tamers on our shard. Lord Vallend had suggested a hunting expedition to the Dungeon Destard. The purpose of the adventure was to capture several of the new, more powerful breed of dragons that has begun to appear in our lands. The subdued dragons would then be given to experts in the taming of animals, so they might study them and train them to be their companions.

The group began the hunt with a handful of participants, all eager to try their luck at taming a dragon or helping to keep those making the attempt alive. The strategy decided upon was simple: Beat the dragon down until almost dead, then allow an experienced tamer to soothe the beast. While the plan sounded good in theory, it was a bit more difficult in practice! After weakening the powerful dragons with everything from insect swarms to attacks with other pets, the onslaught would be stopped and the taming would begin.

Mages cast healing and invisibility spells on the tamers while bards used their peaceful music to calm the dragons.

There were several people who had success in taming the beasts that night, including Azuel Rizen, Hagrid, Lord Rick, and Reagan Skye. Azuel earned herself the nickname "Dragon Whisperer" for the ease with which she tamed the dragons she walked up to. Hagrid would tell the group when to stop attacking the dragons, and tamed a good many of the beasts himself. After a dragon deemed worthy of study was subdued, it would be brought to the Dungeon's entrance, where it would be given to one of the gathered group.

A few of the dragons these experienced tamers did not think were worthy of being kept in the stables were tamed anyway, to be used to attack the more powerful dragons that would make good companions. Seeing two of these monsters battling it out was awe-inspiring. My pixies managed to paint a picture of one such battle.

The evening concluded when everyone who had arrived had received a dragon to take to his or her stables to study, train, and perhaps even learn from.

    Peaceful Journeys,
    Lord Franklin

    Adida's Scavenger Hunt

Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008, 5:02 AM EST by Medea (Drachenfels)
    >>> Trammel Facet News <<<

Last Wednesday, we had the pleasure to meet Adida and her advertised Scavenger Hunt (for Valentines Day). It was a short event, but none the less a welcome distraction from the daily life on Drachenfels. The rules were different than before because there was some confusion about items and participants earlier on other shards. Adida managed it very well, and after thirty minutes and a second draw for a last winner - four were chosen in the first round already - she announced the winners on Drachenfels (in no particular order): Nina Luna, Rob Woodcraft, New Frarc, Fiona and Ronja. Each winner received a blessed Rose with a special title ("2008 Valentine Hunt Champion"). It was short fun, hopefully more coming soon to our shards!

Adida appears and the crowd is cheering - Scavenger hunt time!
Adida erscheint und die Leute freuen sich auf die bevorstehende Schnitzeljagd!

Everybody is listening to the game-rules

After ten Minutes, the submission chest appears for the first time
Nach rund zehn Minuten erscheint die Kiste zur Abgabe der Items das erste Mal

Adida is leaving us with pink bunnies and a flaming pink heart!
Adida verabschiedet sich mit pinkfarbenen Hasen und einem riesigen Feuer-Herz!

    Farewell, auf bald!

Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008, 2:59 AM EST by El of LA (CommunityNews)

We have received this news item from Nick Yee at the Daedalus Project which collects information and responses from the gaming community for purposes of tracking the virtual world and looking at the psychology, culture, and outlook of individuals who play online. Its an exciting project with fascinating stories and surveys! Here is the announcement of the latest issue.

The Daedalus Project: New Findings and Surveys

The Daedalus Project (http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus) is an ongoing online survey study of MMORPG players that has surveyed over 40,000 players. Some highlights of the current issue's findings:

    • Are short people more likely to make tall avatars? Who prefers to be an Elf and who prefers to be an old dwarf? In this article, we'll take a look at the intersection of physical bodies and virtual bodies: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001613.php

    • Can MMOs be therapeutic? In this article, we'll take a look at the many different ways in which people use MMOs as a coping mechanism and consider how MMOs provide an outlet for many psychological stressors. We'll also explore both positive and negative consequences of doing so, and in particular discuss the gray area between therapy and dependency: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001610.php

    • What happens when people who know each other face-to-face reverse roles when they play an MMO together? Do these reversals change their face-to-face relationship in any way? In this article, we'll consider perspectives from friends, romantic partners, parent-children pairs, and boss-employee pairs: http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001611.php

    Valentine's Day Scavenger Hunt Results
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008, 12:20 AM EST by Sheridan_of_ElF (Pacific)

Scavengers from every corner of the realm gathered earlier this evening at the magnificently redesigned
Yew Waterfall Garden in anticipation of the Valentine's Day Scavenger Hunt. Mixed reviews
had reached us from other shards, but ever optimistic, the citizens of Pacific
showed up in droves for their chance at the coveted prize.

It was a beautiful day as I made my way by boat to the Waterfall garden. Despite my
narcoleptic tillerman's uncanny ability to run my boat aground every chance he gets,
we made it in one piece... aside from a slight incident with a rock in the river,
that is. I disembarked and secured the News Cruiser as my tillerman
nodded off once more, oblivious to the roaring falls nearby.

It was not long before seats filled up and it became standing room only.
Right on time, our host Adida appeared from the ether and announced the rules.
The next thing I knew, a chest had materialized on the dais next to Adida
and a mad rush for the contest books ensued.

For a chance at one of only five 2008 Valentine Hunt Champion roses,
the list proved quite easy to accomplish. I quickly calculated that
Britain would be an ideal location to find all but one of the items required.

Once I recalled to the abnormally quiet streets of Britain, I shifted into the swifter form of a wolf
and darted in and out of various establishments across the City of Compassion.

For the large vase, the last of the items on my list, let's just say
I called in a favor and err... "borrowed" one from an old friend...

I scurried back to the Waterfall Garden and found Adida explaining the way it would work.
Not on the platform, you say? I started pacing around, eyes peeled for the drop.

Which ended up all of a few feet away...
As you can see, several people were none too happy about missing their chance.

Congratulations to the winners! And check out the fancy gear on Adida!

As swiftly as she had come, Adida bid us all adieu but not without her trademark
sense of style in a dazzling display of pink and purple explosions.

And a gift of pink bunnies!

There's always one, isn't there? Squire of Light, indeed!

    Scavenger Hunt 2008
    Scavenger Hunt!

In the wake of a disappointing UO Christmas season, we were today treated to a second part to a very nice UO Valentine's Day. On the day itself, we recieved a nice box, stuffy animals and chocolate, as well as chocolate ingredients to spawn on paragons, if I remember right.

I was curious as how it would come off, without bieng seriously raided or somehow cheated off of. I was pleasantly surprised that is came and went, and was a success too! There was a huge turn out, participants from all sides of the fence. Kudos everyone for the grand participation! We were given lists and told the first five back would win. The way I understood it, the recieving chest would only accept 5 submissions.

After randsacking my own house, I pilfered others of undisclosed origin. But I could not find all the items! So after trading with a couple guild mates, we managed to get one of us submitted in time!

CONGRATS to Kynthia and all the other winners! I would list the other windders but I did not return in time to hear them....or perhaps I am just a biased reporter. *shrugs*

At the end, to everyone's surprise, a bazillion rare blue bunnies spawned... and promptly died.

    Ahh....Siege.

Kingdom of Dawn Announces Open House

Posted on Thursday, February 21, 2008, 9:14 AM EST by Sara of Baja (Baja)

Upon finally contacting Grand Duchess WildStar from the player-run Kingdom of Dawn, we received an apology for the lack of information given out.  She stated that they had wanted to keep a low profile about their project and gave us the following press release.

    Kingdom of Dawn Open House

    Saturday, March 1, 2008

    6:00 PM PST (9 EST, 8 CST & 7 MST) until 9:00 PM PST

The Kingdom of Dawn is pleased to announce that we are holding an open house with 2 tours – one starting at 6:45 and the other starting at 8 - and food on Saturday, March 1st from 6:00 PM PST (9 EST, 8 CST & 7 MST) until 9:00 PM PST.  We have updated several buildings in the Kingdom, totally redone several more and placed a Book Library with in-game and player-written books to include such former Baja Citizens as Na-Krul from Dark Tower and Dane Alexander from tDw.  Books and runes to the Kingdom will be distribute the week before the event and someone will be gating from Luna Bank to the Kingdom starting at 5:45 PM PST.

Everyone is welcome and able to attend and any troublemakers – blue or red – will be removed and/or banned from the building.

    Important Personal Security Information:

The Kingdom of Dawn is located on the Felucca Facet, and can not be responsible for any lost items or other negative actions that may occur while you or your pet are in the Kingdom.  We will do our best to keep our guests secure, but we are a small guild, and only a few of us will be on hand to host the event, give the tours and provide security.

The monsters and NPC’s that occasionally find their way into the Kingdom include brigand camps, air and water elementals, dire wolves, ogres, ettins, trolls, corpsers, reapers and gargoyles.

We personally recommend the following actions be taken if you are concerned about losing items, pets or dying while in the Kingdom:

    1.       Only carry items on you that you can afford to lose or insure items that you are concerned about.

    2.       Create a one keystroke macro that will enable you to recall to a safe spot in the event of trouble.  Using the 2D client, the macro would look like this:  open backpack, use spell recall.  You will need to set a default location in your runebook for a quick get-away.

    3.       We do not have a secure location to stable live pets, so use a NPC Stablemaster and use an ethereal mount instead.

We can be reached via Grand Duchess WildStar at ICQ # 8040775, if you want to help out with our event or have any comments or questions.  She asks that you state Dawn Open House when contacting her.

    Scavenger Hunting Season! !

    Hello Fellow Sosarians,
Tonight we had the pleasure of Adida visiting our new picnic area to host a scavenger hunt.

I myself, never having the chance to hunt Scavengers, was very excited for the danger that was sure to come with this hunt of a new creature. Adida was carrying her Boomstick and wearing a Cloak of Invisibility so for sure this would be dangerous. I was excited to see this beast they called "Scavenger".

Adida then gave us directions explaining that we would be given a bag with 2 books. One book would tell us what items to collect and the other we would sign with our name.

The first 5 people to bring back the items would win the trophy.

2008 Valentine Hunt Champion Engraved on the vase.

I was perplexed at this but thought these items must be needed to conjour this beast called Scavenger.

There was a nice crowd in attendance when Adida announced the winners.

Stryder , Muse DeDannan , Viola , Dametri , and myself Paul Harvey.

I was given a trophy but alas I didn't get to see the elusive creature they called Scavenger. . . .

Congo Rats to the winners !! ! !

    This has been Paul Harvey

    Goood Day!

    The Catskills Scavenger Hunt Results

Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 9:34 PM EST by Vallend (Catskills)
    >>> Trammel Facet News <<<Catskills finally had their turn at the "The Valentine's Day Scavenger Hunt" ,on the 20th of Feb, and many people showed up to take part. The event took place at the new Yew Waterfalls Garden that is a beautiful and tranquil place to visit.

Adida did not disappoint the waiting crowd as she appeared on the gazebo in a giant pink explosion that covered the area. Dressed all in pink, astride a pink mount too. She looked quite fetching and was a sight not to be missed.

She quickly explained the rules, and stated that the scavenger hunt items she had listed in the book had not been used before on any other shard. Then she showed the prize that the first five people to complete the quest could win. A single flower in a vase marked "2008 Valentine Hunt Champion"

She followed that by placing on the ground a pink chest, full of pink bags that everyone taking part in the events was suppose to take one of. In the pink bags there was two books. The first book you signed, so when you turned in your bag Adida would know who it belonged to. The second book had the list of items that the contestants were to gather and bring back to the gazebo to be placed in a second box. (the second box was not placed till 5 minutes after the first one was. To make sure everyone had a fair chance of winning.) The first 5 players to gather the wanted items and place their bags in the second box were declared the winners.

As soon as everyone had grabbed their bag and looked at the list, there was a mad rush from the area, as people went forth to gather the items and try to beat everyone else back to win the contest. Adida made small conversation with the few of us who remained behind, while waited to see who would win this mad race, and in record time people started returning to place their filled bags in the second chest she had placed.

Once Adida had the first 5 bags in the chest she excused herself to ensure that no new characters, or previous winners from other shards owned one of the winning bags. When she was done verifying that everything was fine she returned and announced the winners, and they were:

Fahrenheit, A Dark Angel, Sionell, Jenna and Mordoc

Congratulations to these winners for being faster then everyone else at the scavenger hunt.

Adida then said her goodbyes and left us with a huge pink heart shaped explosion around her. Say what you will about her, but she does has have her own style.

All in all it was a fast but fun event. Lets hope for more in the near future.

    Here, there be Super Dragons!
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Wednesday, February 20, 2008, 4:28 AM EST by Sheridan_of_ElF (Pacific)

The world's gone mad, I tell you! Exploding houses with burning effigies... Chocolatey confections and stuffy animals... And it seems you can't go anywhere now without tripping over a garishly colored rabbit or getting trampled on by the dubiously named "Super Dragons" that have begun to surface all across Sosaria and that we've all heard so much fuss about lately. Well, I paid a visit to the perilous caverns of Destard to see for myself just how tough these reptillian juggernauts really were and what all was involved when skilled animal tamers attempted to convince one to join forces with them. I soon learned it took much more than a honeyed tongue and peaceful tunes to soothe these savage beasts...

Upon recalling to the entrance of the dreaded dragons' den, I couldn't help but notice a collection of deathrobes littering the ground. And standing tall in the middle of the pile was a brave soul called Porkchop. I nodded a greeting as the Elder Animal Tamer hastily dressed and rushed back into the entrance... only to return a few moments later, deathrobe furiously flapping behind him. Deciding that discretion was indeed the better part of Valor, even in the depths of the Anti-Valor Dungeon, I moved silently through the entranceway, sticking closely to the shadows.

It was not long before Porkchop came once again dashing headlong into the fray... Despite healing and lyrical help from fellow tamers Xena and KIAWAH, Porkchop's attempt at appealing to the greater dragon's sense of logic fell a bit short...

Somehow, I don't think protection is really an issue for this fellow, Porkchop.

Xena steps up to the plate and tries a different approach - asking the greater dragon to join her. So uhh... was that a no, then??

A flanking strategy for taming fares no better and the undaunted dragon wrangling duo pauses to ponder the pricey penalty for failure. Perhaps things might have gone differently had he not had such a tasty-sounding name...

It was around this time that TAMMY discovered she was not resistant to decapitation or evisceration.

Huzzah! Backup hath arrived in the form of another Legendary Bard... Amadeus! He'eees in... Aaaaand he's down.

TAMMY should really be more specific in the future...

Finally, success! Turns out he just wanted a little TLC, folks!

Elsewhere in the dungeon, Xave makes his attempt at sweet-talking his way into a greater dragon's heart... and ends up in its stomach instead.

Percival lends a healing hand to help improve Xave's chance for survival. After a brief chat, Xave goes to try and make back some of that lost insurance money.

Some folks host a short-lived shindig with their various pets. More does not necessarily equal better as they found out quickly.

Solace and Zarra don't fare much better.

Congratulation on your new friend, David! Er. Ex-friend. RIP "HellFire" - We barely knew you...

Even the llamas want in on the action. I wonder if they're any relation to those diseased rabbits running around...

    Adida Holds Scavenger Hunt

Adida, Host for the Valentines Scavenger Hunt

Today at 4pm EST, the 'Romantic Garden' at the waterfall north of the Shrine of Justice was the site of a Valentine Scavenger hunt held by the mysterious Adida. Many eager citizens gathered around the gazebo long before the event was scheduled to begin, waiting for her arrival.

Slightly after 4pm, a woman dressed in pink appeared astride a hot-pink steed. Upon closer inspection of her clothing, I noticed she was wearing a Cloak of Invisibility and Boots of Escaping…most unusual attire. Adida introduced herself and told those gathered about the Scavenger Hunt. She then plunked down a garish pink chest filled with bright pink bags. Everyone was instructed to take a bag and follow the instructions listed in the red book inside.

The chest was quickly swarmed, and the bags snatched up. Travel spells were hurriedly cast as people raced off to gather the requested items - For only five people would win this day. The items we were asked to gather were quite mundane, and easily attainable. Adida wanted: a harp, a lute, a diamond, a bow, and a slice of bacon. We were to place these 5 items along with a signed book into the bag and return them to a 'Submissions Chest'.

The assembled crowd at the Romantic Garden.

I quickly gathered these things from merchants in Britain and raced back to the garden. After a few minutes the Submission Chest appeared, and was hastily swarmed. Alas, the chest would not accept our submissions. Adida determined the culprit was the magic linking the chest to the books, and thus a new list was swiftly created and we were off once again. As before, she wanted five items: a pen and ink, a bottle of wine, a pan of cookies, a slice of bacon, and a book of poetry.

Once more, Britain was my destination of choice and I gathered all the items and returned to the garden. Another mad dash for the Submission Chest ensued, and this time people were able to submit their bags. Unfortunately, those who followed the instructions in the list book perfectly were unable to submit their bags, as the chest wanted the original list as well! (The book explicitly stated the bag should only contain your 5 items and a signed book) Several people voiced their dissatisfaction as Adida verified the contents of the five bags submitted.

Fortunately for those paying close attention, Adida announced that two of the bags were duplicates from certain people and the Submissions chest was plunked down once more. I darted for it and managed to drop my bag in first. After another verification process, Adida announced the winners. Each winner received a rare pink rose in a vase engraved with "2008 Valentine Hunt Champion."

Adida thanked us all from coming to participate in the hunt, and bade us farewell by summoning a herd of pink bunnies before disappearing from sight.

Mystery in Ocllo Leads To Dawn

Posted on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, 1:32 PM EST by Sara of Baja (Baja)

Following up on our story of last week, Orianna and I decided to check up on the worker shortage in Ocllo.  Upon arrival we noticed a marked increase in the number of workers in the town.  When questioned the shopkeepers stated that 15 of the workers returned yesterday.  We went in search of one of them and found him within a few minutes of asking around.

“How does it feel to be back home?”

“Good, very good!  I missed my family but earned enough gold pieces between what we were paid when we left and what we got when we returned that I can put some gold in bank for my kids.”

“Describe the events that lead up to your return yesterday.”

“Mr. Runeblade told us during lunch two days ago that most of us would not be needed anymore as most of the work was done and would be gated back home tomorrow morning.  He said that five of us would be needed for about another week to finish up the remaining work and asked for volunteers.  At that moment, Lady WildStar appeared and said that there would be a feast tonight and that five single men should stay behind as we had been away from our families long enough and thanked us for our hard work.  We had roasted pig, barbecued chicken and beef, the third best cookies I have ever eaten – my mom and wife being first and second – and plenty of ale, cider, wine and liquor.  We were gated back to the bank mid-morning yesterday and paid the remaining gold pieces we were owed for our work, which was 15,000 gold.”

“What were you doing in Dawn?”

“I was doing carpentry work.”  He said vaguely.

We looked at each other and realized that we would have to try to trip him up to get some solid information from him.

“You look like a man who takes pride in his work.”  He nodded.  “Are you proud of the work you did in Dawn?”

He grinned broadly and said, “Oh yes.  It is like the buildings are ……” he paused then continued “Lady WildStar and Mr. Runeblade asked us to keep quiet about what we have done as an announcement would be made soon about what is going on in Dawn.”

We thanked him for his time and decided to travel to Dawn and look around the city.  We recalled on the rune that Oriana marked after our previous encounter with Mr. Runeblade and headed north.  As we came upon were we had seen the men working before, we noticed one change right away – the name on the building had changed.  It was now called “The Ethereal Travel Inn & Rune Library”.  No one was around, so we went inside and noticed that work appeared to be about half way done – the furniture was in place but runebooks were missing or incomplete.

Oriana and I decided that we needed to talk to Grand Duchess WildStar as soon as we could contact her.

    Tamer-Palooza!! (Better late than never?)

Posted on Monday, February 18, 2008, 10:45 AM EST by Oriana (Baja)

    TAMER-PALOOZA!

This reporter was witness to one of the most amazing events Baja has ever seen. The Tamer-Palooza hosted by Lord Yalp and Lady Epona of CTDM was a huge success. And from the many reports I’ve seen it is defiantly something the tamers of Baja would like to see again.

Being a member of UTB, I met with other guild mates in Delucia to take them too the start of the event.

Registration took place at the Grand Arena, southwest of the main city of Luna . Many tamers lined up for the privilege to help our great Zoo that is in need of much love and attention. Twenty-five brave tamers answered the call to help build up the Zoo.

Then the rules of the event were announced and questions answered. Lord Yalp explained that the prizes had increased from the original amounts thanks to donations for Lord Dar of ToT and Lady Sara of TAO.  A treat to all was every 100th animal donated the person turning in that creature was awarded with 100,000 gold.

We were all told to get our first tame ready and met Lord Yalp and Lady Epona at the Moonglow Royal Zoo. Explained the rules one more time, then the chaos began.

It was a very bumpy start to the event but as the wise ones say live and learn. People waited patiently for the first round to move through. Soon everyone began lining up with their tames to help poor overwhelmed Lord Yalp record everyone’s creature. Lady Epona conducted the line and made announcements to those in the back of the line.

It wasn’t long before the 100th creature was donated to the Zoo. Lil Debi of TAO was the lucky person to turn number 100. Soon Jalad the Hunter had number 200 with his ki-rins. Lord Cornal Cernach of UTB made the 300th donation. Another UTB member soon donated number 400, Princess Cy nDie. And finally Lord Dar of ToT turned in the 500th creature. Congratulations to all of you for wining 100,000 gold.

It was a long haul for Lord Yalp and Lady Epona but soon we reached the time limit for turn ins. Those that showed up after the cutoff still generously donated their creatures to the Zoo. Yalp announced to us the amount that had been donated during the two hour event. A whooping 206975 points. Tamers of Baja should be very proud of their accomplishments.

1st- Milrado of SI (3.75 mil gold, special commemorative cake, and white para chest)
2nd- Lord Altos of UTB (2 mil gold, special commemorative cake, white para chest)
3rd- Lord Cornal Cernach of UTB (1.25 mil gold, commemorative cake, white para chest)

We were all instructed to head back the Grande Arena in preparation of prizes and the finale…The Tamer Parade. After prizes were awarded we all gathered our best and oddest animals to parade around Luna.

This was an incredible event and I sincerely hope that we can look forward to many more of these.

A few more pictures just for fun.

    A Personal Loss...

Library of Sosaria - Main Floor.

Tonight, I write with a heavy heart. For as I write this article, I sit on a makeshift cot amongst the Feluccan runes in the Nameless Rune Library. Why you might ask? I'll tell you why... Today my home, the Library of Sosaria, suffered a cowardly attack by the depraved disciples of Nosfentor.

While I was out marking runes for the Nameless Rune Library, which I recently acquired from an overworked Lord Evilice, followers of the Shadowlord snuck into my office above the Library of Sosaria and blew up a magically protected bookcase. Since the last High Council meeting, the Triad of Evil [T-E] has been seen skulking around other libraries allegedly looking for tomes on banishing rituals. The bookcase they affixed their bombs to contained powerful books of magic and darkness not meant for consumption by the general public.

When I returned to the Library, to my horror, a column of black smoke rose from the northwestern corner of the building. I rushed into the main chamber to see a gaping hole blown in the side of my life's work. The bodies of my staff lay amongst the rubble and debris, their grotesque burns barely masking the obvious signs of torture.

My friends Llewellyn, Jennettia and June are dead. My Library, my office, and my home lay exposed to the elements. The only piece of 'good news', if it can be deemed such, is that their use of explosives was not as excessive as when Kazola's Treetop Keg and Winery was destroyed by Nosfentor's hand. To add further insult, a Valentine from Harry Plotter of [T-E] was skewered to my desk by a bloody dagger.

Library of Sosaria - Martyna's Office.

I have tried to remain calm, tried to give each 'side' a voice in the public arena, but now that the chaos has literally struck at my doorstep... The damaged portion of the Library can be rebuilt; copies of the damaged books are kept at a secure location... But lives... Lives I can neither rebuild nor copy. I have had enough of Nosfentor's murderous rampage; she will receive no quarter from me.

I call upon each citizen of Britannia to rise against the Shadowlord of Cowardice! Don't do it for me, or the Library. Do it for the children of Britain and Cove. Do it for Llewellyn, Jennettia, June, and Justicars Illidan and Woodrow Call. Do it to rid the Kingdom of evil. Do it because it is the right thing to do!

I urge you to Contact the Britannian Armed Forces to lend your swordarm or spellbook to the cause. Any Yew Militia member, Royal Knight of Redemption, or Highland Light Infantryman can help you.

Keep Sosaria safe! Down with Nosfentor!

    Truth. Courage. Honor.

    KSS Truth. Courage. Honor. KSS

The old blind man stood before his friend and leader, slack-jawed with shock and horror.
    Knight Commander Py Lethius
"Nay, sire! It cannot be! Say tis not so! There must be another way!"

The old warrior placed a firm hand on Otto's shoulder, shaking his head, although he knew the movement would not be seen.
"My dear friend, there IS no other way. We Knights of the Silver Serpent have ever done our duty, no matter the cost, no matter how high the price. But, if I do not walk this path, then the price would be too high for even me to endure."

They stood in mutual silence, both knowing that the end of an era had come.

    Then, the Knight Commander spoke:
"Sir Otto, as the highest ranking Knight still to walk the land, I pass to you the sword of leadership. I do not envy you the road ahead. What was once a mighty legion of knights, mages, and other warriors, is now a faint ember of what it was. But, that ember still burns. Do your best. No one can ask more."

"My destiny calls, as do the voices of those I love more than life itself. Be safe, and be true!"

And, with a final salute, Lord Py Lethius turned, and stepped through a glowing portal, to a strange land beyond. A land devoid of magic, but filled with strange devices, and stranger people.
The land of the Spirit Realm. The land where his closest kin awaited him with open arms.

The old miner weighed the sword that had been placed in his hand. It seemed to glow with energy, but more so, with the power of the legend that had been written by Py Lethius.

Turning to the window, with a heavy heart, he called to the townsfolk below.
"Good people of Sosaria, lend me your ears!"

There was a brief shower of severed ears, swiftly scooped up by the deranged mayor of Luna, but then Otto could hear the townsfolk standing attentively below.

"Good friends, countrymen, and citizens of Sosaria, I bring you dark tidings.
On this day, did Lord Py Lethius set foot on the path that leads away from our lands for the final time.
He lives yet - do not mourn his passing in that way - but it is safe to say that this is a quest from which he will most likely not return.
Join with me then, in a moment's silence, to honor this great man, who did so much for our lands!"

A stunned silence fell over the crowd below.

Then, one by one, the people came forward, bringing tales of valor, memories of encounters with the great man, and word of lives he had saved, monsters he had driven back, all in their defence.

Join with me now, good friends of Siege, and let us remember Py Lethius, and all he was to us, in his time here - on Siege Perilous.

Please do not misunderstand, good people. This is not an obituary. Nothing serious has happened to Py.
This is a farewell, and an opportunity to honor one of the great men of Siege.

Events in his life have become such that he can no longer walk the dusty paths of Siege Perilous.
As the life he lived with us here was honorable, so too are his reasons for saying farewell.

So, let us do honor to all he meant to us, and all he did for Siege!

Blind Otto turned from the window, and pondered the sword in his hand once more.

"You know," he remarked to no one in particular, "I could have sworn I was a miner and blacksmith."

He sheathed the sword, and stood up.
"Well, miner, knight, or, if they'll have me, Knight Commander, one thing is certain. As long as I draw breath, KSS will not die!"

From a far off land, came a familiar voice, sounding the Knights war cry

    SOL INVICTUS!

When I first encountered Py Lethius, I was still a member of [NEW].
VmP had surrounded the guildhouse, and were casting poison fields and other spells inside.
Thankfully, this was in the days before the Samurai lands were discovered, and before the Elves had returned, with their natures furies and other spells.
Still, there were no [NEW] leaders around, and none of us had enough skill to resurrect each other if we died.

Then, this wave of blue warriors arrived, cutting the vampires down in their path, and sending them howling off into the caves and shadows of the northern mountains.

They were led by a grey-haired commander, who made a bee-line for WyRm, the leader of the vampires.
Yelling his battle cry, and flanked by two healers, he made short work of the vampire lord.
Once the last vampire was dead or fled, the Knights of the Silver Serpent entered the guild house, to heal the wounded, raise the dead, and, once all had calmed down enough, spent their time offering training advice, supplying resources, and providing encouragment.

Truly, an inspiration. He fought with honor, and insisted on the highest standards from those who followed him.
He refused to allow dry looting, mount killing, or rez-killing.
No member of KSS was ever to call on guards against an enemy.
Enemies were always to be resurrected when possible and treated with honor.

And that is just one handful of examples of his standards. More can be read here.
But, I will leave it to you to tell your own tales of this fine man, and good friend.
Or, as the case may be to some of you, worthy foe.

So, let us hear it - what are your memories of Py Lethius, people of Siege? Bring us your pictures, your memories, your tributes - to give a fitting farewell to this living legend of Siege!

A small crowd gathered around the new gazebo at the yew waterfalls this morning, all waiting for some sign that the hunt was going to begin.
The numbers were few, many Oceanians still sleeping off a big night, but there were still enough for some competition.
In the midst of chatter, a new voice was heard,
    "Hello everyone!"
It was Adida one of the live event members.

After a quick meet and greet she filled us in on what the scavenger hunt was all about...

After that was all said and done, she placed a pink chest on the steps full of, you guessed it!
    Pink pouches!
Inside were 2 books. One which you wrote your name into and the other giving you a list of the items you needed to collect.

As soon as people grabbed their bags they took off to get the items and here is the result.

The first 5 people in with the goods were, MR Blue, Chief Y, Tarkus Darkly, Cymoril and AutOMAtiC upDAtE, who each received a rose in a vase inscribed with ‘2008 Valentines Hunt Champion’

  • *Lady Lava takes a respite in her Luna Manse as the flames flicker outside, results of revenge on a traitor.*

  • Rubble is old news......or is it? Dragons and purple bunnies seem to be the hot topics these days but rubble made a big impact in our realm, especially in design. The first great design I witnessed using rubble was on Great Lakes in the MOA library. A shipwreaked, beached ship scenerio was masterfully done.

Since that day I have seen some truly great design with rubble and many were/are on Catskills. The MOP Museum and its large rubble tables make it hard for anyone to be more impressive with rubble.
(If you make a trip there be sure to check out the rooftop with its wonderful perfectly placed large rubble trees giving the garden a shady place safe from the harsh rays of the sun). However I have no doubt Leigh on Catskills could outdo the best. Several months ago she gave me a tour of her Catskills creative endeavor and her power room and kitchen are the best I have seen in years and I have seen hundreds of those types of rooms.

The owner of the Temple of Zento on Great Lakes was redesigning the temple shortly after rubble appeared in our realm and he actually used rubble in support beams and walls.

    * a vignette of the Temple as it stands today *

It seems plants had a revival with rubble. I have fond memories when horticulture first was made available to us. The new plants gave new ideas and enhanced many a garden. Ren's Vesper Shore Shops on Catskills is a perfect example of that as well as The Peaceful Garden on Great Lakes. CanaCabana on Catskills showcases a log and stumps nicely.

If you have a design using rubble you are proud of please send a screenshot my way for a future article and happy designing !

    FoF: What a Week!

Publishes, chats, bunnies, and explosions - just another week in UO! This week's Five on Friday covers some info about the recent publish, details about item properties, and more!

"When I'm crafting an item with a runic tool, do all properties have an equal chance of being used??"

Not necessarily - some properties are more common than others, and it depends on the type of item. Here's a general overview of the weighting:

Shields and wands - all properties have an equal chance to be rolled
Fishing poles - Spell Channelling is twice as common as everything else; all others are equal
Jewelry - All properties are equal, with two exceptions: Night Sight is quite rare, and skill bonuses are grouped - see the note below.
Talismans: Slayer, Crating bonus, crafting exceptional bonus, and creature resists are all weighted equally - all others are substantially more rare.
Melee weapons - DI is quite common, HLA is uncommon, Hit Area is quite rare - all others are equal
Missile weapons - Same as melee, except DCI is quite rare as well.
Armor (non-elf) - Night Sight is uncommon and hp regen and stamina regen are rare; all others are equal
Elf armor - as above, except night sight isn’t even an option

Property "groups": Certain types of properties are rolled as a group - slayers and creature resists on talismans are rolled for as a property, and then the sub-type is rolled. All the references to them above refer to the chances of these types being rolled as a group - any specific element of the group will of course be much more rare. This also means that you can't get, say, more than one slayer type on a particular item.

Elemental resists are slightly different - the math works out such that rolling any resist is the same chance as rolling another of the "regular" properties, but they are actually treated as five separate properties - so you can roll bonuses to more than one resist on a single item.

Skill bonuses on jewelry are a little bit different - the available skills are divided up into five groups of five or six skills apiece and then the subtype is rolled. It's possible to get more than one skill bonus, because they actually are treated like five different properties.

    Missing patch note + explanation:

Some folks have noticed a change that didn't show up in the patch notes - the omission was intentional, as it was a fix for a particularly nasty exploit. However, it does have some gameplay impact, so we'll explain it here. The note itself:

    - Commodity item prices changed so that the sell price is never greater than the base price, and the buy price never drops below the base price

What this means is that vendors now have a "base price" for commodities - they won't sell those items for less than that base, nor will they buy the items from players for more. Prices will still fluctuate depending on how many of those commodities have recently been bought or sold, but players won't be able to make a profit by finding a vendor with a low sell price on, for example, arrows and selling them to a vendor with a high buy price.

We are aware that this impacts the Doom vendor and healer rather more than the others, and we'll be looking into tweaking them for the next publish.

"The Life Leech and Mana Leech properties seem to be outside of the proper Intensity Range when I use a runic weapon. What's the deal?"

The chance to hit on Mana and Life Leech (but NOT Stamina Leech) are scaled based on the swing speed of the weapon. First, the SSI, if any, is run through an equation to create a modifier. Then that modifier is divided by 4 and multiplied by the intensity to get the actual proc chance (capped at 100%, of course.) Then, if it's a ranged weapon, the chance is cut in half. Faster weapons will have a smaller chance, and slower weapons will have a larger one, at the exact same intensity value. (The tooltip, as near as we can tell, is correct as to the actual chance for the effect to go off. It's just not at all representative of the intensity.)

What this means is, short of running some wacky math on every weapon you create, a crafter can't really tell what intensity he's rolled on a given weapon. I've updated the Item Properties page with a note to that effect :P

(Again, none of this applies to Stamina Leech - its intensity is simply its chance to hit / 2.)

"So, what with all the Exploding Houses in Luna, I'm a bit worried about my own stuff. Should I be?"

Not if you're not cheating! We're dead serious about banning people who violate our Terms of Service, but we are also committed to careful research and thorough investigation. If you're in danger of getting your house blown to smithereens, trust me, you know about it.

There is one caveat, though (isn't there always?) If you have a vendor on another person's house, and that house gets blown up, your vendor will also suffer a gruesome fate. Vendor contracts are buyer-beware - make sure you know the reputation of that Luna vendor you're about to tie your name to, and be cautious if you don't know them personally. Customer Service will not restore a vendor lost in this manner, nor will they reimburse for losses.

"When did the jwilson slimes return?"

Those vile critters reappeared with the most recent publish. Consider the return of this Historic monster part of Wilki's final gift to you - no creature, from the mighty dragon to the lowly slime, escaped his glance.

    Playguide Update Roundup:

This week's changes were all about integrating Pub 50 into the documentation, plus some bonus updates as I work my way backwards through patch notes of yore:

Item Properties : Added the note about the Arms Lore DI bonus and how it can cause an item to exceed the DI cap, added note about intensity ranges of Life and Mana Leeches and corrected their effects, clarified Self Repair, and added a bunch of whitespace because the page was giving me a headache.

Runic Properties : Changed all the min/max intensities to match the current publish

Bulk Order Deeds : Added the bonus high-level blacksmiths now get to receive colored BODS. (Note, this page is iffy at best at the moment - don't rely on it.)

The Facets : Added info about double meat resources in Felucca. (Thoroughness is my watchword! No patch note too trivial! :P)

The Artifacts : Added info about the new Doom artifact drop system.

Skill and Management : Updated with stat cap and management info.

Guarenteed Gain System: Updated with new stat gain info.

Necromancy : Clarified Vampiric Embrace garlic damage.

Parrying : Added info about Dex penalty.

Animal Lore : Added Base Damage as one of the items Animal Lore reveals.

Detect Hidden : Clarified mechanism of determining success.

Bushido : Added weapon skill requirement for Evasion.

    What's To Come:

Next week the Valentine's Day Scavanger Hunt is the big story, plus we'll have a fix for the Salvage Bag bug and the weird rubberbanding y'all have been seeing this week.

The following week is the Town Hall in Jacksonville, then a week or two after that we are planning to get the next publish to Test Center, chock-full of eventy and bug-fixy goodness. Stay tuned for more details!

    Jacksonville Town Hall

Remember, the first Town Hall of the new year will be March 1 in Jacksonville, FL at Dave and Busters. Please do RSVP so we know how much salsa to order!

For our mid-Atlantic players, the May Town Hall meeting is also posted - you can get details on the Town Hall Page and RSVP for that one as well. If you're in the neighborhood, don't miss out!

Skara Brae Community House Now Open to the Public

    >>> Trammel Facet News <<< Skara Brae Community House Now Open to the Public

I stopped by Thursday morning to view the new community house provided by Reepacheap. It is conveniently located just west of the Skara Brae moongate and above the Community Center. Reepacheap stated his goal is to solely help out the community and has designed the house to address those needs.

When you walk up to the house you are greeted by Faith the Town Crier who will update the shard on any announcements of events. There is a public forge nestled on the west wall with vendors offering fair priced commodity deeds and weapons. Once inside the front door you will find a nice display of runebooks offering you voyage to any trammel or felucca town and all treasure hunting locations. Look for town runebooks on the two rows of books to your right.

Taking the teleporter upstairs you will find almost every dye tub save for the statuette dye tub. There are boxes provided to train detect hidden and lock picking. This area specifically needs some help and attention as Reepacheap is still looking for boxes to train on. Please leave word on the bulletin inside the house if you can help. He will accept donations or buy them.

If you have any player written books you would like to copy and donate to the library please feel free to do so. Some final thoughts from Reeps himself in his previous post, “Also, my associates and I will be initially setting up all the vendors, but I would really like to hand off most of these to other members of the community. I'm looking for people that don't mind selling things at a fair price, would allow me to dictate the dress and name of the vendor, as well as it's stock. They must also remain stocked and in good shape at all times. In return, however, you would receive an amazing vendor spot, with no rent. I'm currently looking for somebody to take over a 'repair deeds' vendor and a 'raw materials' vendor. In the future I may hand over the rest (you can see the others once hte house is running). Just contact me at 95092163. It's my hope that this house will be a useful resource to all players, especially newer ones, and that it will be a great help to the events leaving from the community center just below it.”

On behalf of the community I would like to extend a warm welcome and thoughts of appreciation for Reepacheap’s efforts towards the citizens of Lake Superior. I look forward to helping out with whatever I can in the future.

A Grand Night at the Mystic Garden

    >>> Malas News <<<hough I often stumble upon many events, I sometimes have the pleasure of being invited to festive gatherings that grant an enjoyable and care free atmosphere.

One such as event was The Mystic Garden's event night, a large community oriented merchant and craftsman run vendor house, owned by Lady Kero, who had extended a gracious hand to the peoples of Britannia for a night of prizes, conversation and free repairs.

The eve started off with many gathering, as the prize tickets for the lottery were purchased quite quickly, and blacksmiths sharpened and repaired the wear and tear on the worn armaments of the assembled group.

As the night progressed, words of enjoyment and laughter permeated the air, and while loud, were filled with encouragement and compliments.

Amidst anxious queries from several attendees, and lack of purchasable raffle tickets, Lady Kero began the raffle early. Several expensive and useful items were given away, including golden skulls, gold, and rare cloth. Several players reaped the prizes amidst shouts of excitement and victory.

With the raffle at an end, the night wound down and the event came to a close. My personal commendations go out to Lady Kero and the Mystic Garden staff and allies for putting on an excellent and enjoyable evening.

    Temple of Mondain Turns Altruistic?
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Thursday, February 14, 2008, 5:09 PM EST by Martyna Zmuir (GreatLakes)
The Temple of Mondain, Compassion Desert, Felucca.
    Marka Sythiox, Herald of Mondain.

Last week, the Temple of Mondain [ToM] made a somewhat cryptic announcement that their new leader Marka Sythiox would address all those willing to hear him at 9pm on Tuesday. The invitation was kept mainly within political channels to avoid confrontation with the homicidally inclined denizens of Felucca.

My travel to the Temple in Compassion Desert was uneventful, nary a sociopath to be seen. A..diverse.. group had assembled in the Temple's main gallery. Seating the curious was the priest Veritus of ToM. Already sitting in the crowd was a disturbingly large group from the Triad of Evil [T-E], Nosfentor's followers: Absu Maal, Temptation, Harry Plotter, and Magus. A contingent from the Blue Lotus Clan [BL] warily watched their former allies [T-E]: Bishimi, Masaaki Hatsumi, and Solar maid. Governor Locke of Britain stood quietly in the corner, having once been amongst the Temple's membership. Dot Warner of the Order of the Etheral Ankh [OEA] sat behind me and represented the interests of Minister DaKaren and the High Council. Slightly late, three Royal Knights of Redemption sat in the back row: Ariakas, Pierre, and Arzakon Smash. Fortunately everyone managed to maintain their calm, regardless of being surrounded by political enemies.

Veritus introduced Marka, who stood on the altar to give his address:

"Esteemed citizens and loyal servants of Sosaria, I bid you welcome to the Desert of Compassion. The Temple of Mondain is deeply honored to have you this evening. As my esteemed colleague Veritus has stated, this is a historic night for all of us. You sit in the pews of this ancient Temple not as prisoners, not as hostages...but of free will.

You will note that no guards monitor our doors, no witches perch in corners observing you, laying in wait to strike. It is I, my clergy and you. I am unarmed and present myself to you with a clear conscience. It is for this express reason you were not asked to disarm before entering our hallowed halls. For while my predecessor was the instrument of Hate, Malice and Self-serving Vengeance upon our lands...I come before you to declare that his chapter in the Temples history...OUR history, is at an end. My faith convinces me that I need not fear the repercussions of Mordain the Vicious...and that my faith in your wisdom is justified. My brethren have walked among you, and no one has raised a hand against us in anger.

For this, you have my gratitude.

I empathize with Sosarians everywhere who have felt the harsh hand of this citadel's...previous inhabitants. Their practices and behavior were sub-condemnable...and it is my sincere hope to somehow make amends, if not to the afflicted themselves, but to the memory those trespassed have imparted upon others with regards to anyone who follows the Word.

It is not my intention tonight to convert, convince or contrive some explanation as to why both I and my brethren hold the lessons of Mondain so dear. Suffice to say that we have all 'heard the stories' of Mondain's somewhat sinister childhood and his ultimate descent into the darkness of sin and betrayal. We appreciate the fact that history has, to the layperson, condemned this figure as a vile conqueror who sought to exploit his gift for personal gain, coupled with the subjugation of any who would stand in his way.

But what if, for a moment, you suspend disbelief and consider the possibility that what has been placed before you was manufactured?

    *slight cough*

That was phrased poorly. I am not presuming to state that the history we all know and accept about Mondain is some fabrication. He did what he did, and this Temple does not refute that. What we offer is the possibility, if you will...that Mondain's hand was FORCED, and that this gifted, fifteen-year old child was put upon a dark road...

...it was not one he chose for himself.

The child Mondain possessed an uncanny gift for imparting lessons upon his associates during his time; many of these lessons being held dear not only to myself, but to my clergy to this day. Utilizing the talents of my closest confidants, we were able to unearth the evidence I sought to prove my belief. My chronicler, whom many of you have met, Ythicus made the ultimate discovery, right here in the Sands of Compassion. A codexical journal of sorts...

    ...the Legacy of Mondain.

It is this present incarnation of the Temple you see before you that will carry out the true will of Mondain...a will that speaks of ensuring that none shall feel want so long as a disciple of Mondain exists to fulfill that need. He continually speaks to us, and charges us with the sacred task of redeeming the sins of a brilliant mind, and imparting his wisdom upon present day Sosaria as we are able.

I have invested a large sum of my personal fortune into the creation of a convoy system that will establish a direct route to the shattered island of Magincia. Under the protection of my naval commander, Rydmathias, we seek to provide food, supplies and hope to that beleaguered island. This will be done at the expense of the Temple exclusively.

This is our first gesture, of many to come.

As previously stated, my brethren and I are not seeking to convert or justify...merely to make amends. We are well aware of the blood splashed upon these walls. Our mission is to bring the True Word and the True Will...as dictated in the Legacy of Mondain. For those seeking further enlightenment to our course, or to those souls who have felt the call as we have and seek to join with us, I encourage you to send a missive to our Faith Minister, Elwyd Macgraven, I believe he has left method for contacting him upon the public boards of the High Council.

I would now be happy to take a few questions."

Marka on the Altar of Mondain.

Questions from the assemblage were somewhat banal, and most had been attended to during the speech. Several questions about the Magincian Convoy were asked, mainly relating to the reaction from the citizens, and how the Temple would respond if they were rejected. Marka responded by saying “We will only go where we are welcomed, if they ask us to leave, we shall depart..."

The members of R.K.R., members of the Britannian Armed Forces, remember the Temple's bloody history well, and find it hard to believe that such a force of evil could change – literally overnight. Marka took that in stride and said “We understand you have no reason to trust us, so we will give you reason to with our aid to Magincia."

With the questions over, Marka left the gathering after turning the crowd over to priestess Scarlet Pimpere for a tour of the keep. The tour itself was fascinating, especially the library; however, it is obvious that this new Temple of Mondain will have a long uphill struggle to change their public image.

Can they do it? And should we believe them? Only time will tell.

A jailhouse interview with Mordain the deposed High Priest of Mondain will be coming shortly...

Attention Archers! S|A's Best Shot In The Realm, Sunday, February 17
    Return to TopSubmit News!
Posted on Thursday, February 14, 2008, 5:26 AM EST by Sara of Baja (Baja)

    The following message from Orion,
GM of the Society of Archers, just arrived:

    To all residents of Baja!

It gives me great pleasure to announce the start of the new season for the Best Shot in the Realm contest! This month’s event will take place on Sunday, February 17, and be held at the Skara Brae Fairegrounds. The event kicks off with some light refreshments starting at 4:00 PST. Registration will begin at 4:20 PST with the event starting at 4:30 PST (7:30 EST, 6:30 CST, 5:30 MST).

The Best Shot in the Realm Contest (BSR) is a monthly free event hosted by the Society of Archers. Archers of all skill levels are invited to compete and take aim at this month’s prize which is a minimum of 200,000 gold. A new prize has been added this season with each month’s winner taking home a custom-made Frostwood bow prepared by our own craftsmen and engraved to commemorate the occasion. The winner also receives an invitation to compete in the annual Tournament of Champions held but once a year. The Tournament of Champions is where the winners of each monthly event meet once again to determine who the very best Archer on Baja is!

Last season’s Tournament of Champions was won by the Society of Archer’s own Lil Debi who took home over 15 million in gold and prizes including a 120 Archery Power Scroll, Dryad’s bow, Hunter’s Headdress and more! The event was a phenomenal display of skill and accuracy as each of the monthly winners competed for the right to be called Champion. Lil Debi is also the first in the history of the event to win back to back Tournament of Champions as she successfully defended her title from 2006!

I’d like to take a moment also to recap last year’s winners:

    Lil Debi [S|A]
    2006 BSR Grand Champion
    2007 BSR Grand Champion
    November 2007 BSR Winner

    Jaun'ty [RoC] (February 2007)
    Taylor [S|A] (March 2007, June 2007)
Lord Areodante [CTDM] (April 2007, October 2007)
    Kathryn [S|A] (May 2007)
    Rufus [UG.K] (July 2007)
Lord Steve Austin [BLS] (August 2007, September 2007)
    Chango [MTI] (December 2007)

Many thanks to all who assisted with the events and donated time or prizes to make last year’s season so successful! We look forward to seeing you at the Fairegrounds!

    Sincerely,
Orion of the Society of Archers

    Caveat emptor!

How many have heard that phrase? It means buyer beware. On Atlantic we have faced a variety if things from dupers to scripters among other rather shameless and shady ways to make quick gold on the shard. Many know I have no love for them from a lot of my previous articles here on Stratics. This has been a long time coming:

"Cheating: We hate it as much as you do. We can’t disclose our plans or methods, but be assured that removing exploits and keeping the game fair is a top priority for the Live team. As far as the cheaters themselves? Some of you may know what I can do with a lit match and some blackrock. Expect burned out shells where treasure vaults of ill-gotten gains were once held. Allow me to reiterate: cheating will not be tolerated."

    -Draconi

True to his word houses across all shards were burned to ash and rubble. Luna had one go up in flames, here on Atlantic. I have a feeling, in the future we can expect more to come! Go Draconi! I tip my hat to you Draconi and will still try to be the voice of Atlantic!

Posted on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, 11:15 AM EST by Daine (Origin)

ast night as across many shards, justice came to Origin. Scripting houses were burned to the ground and effigies placed in the center of the rubble declaring to all of Sosaria: Effigy of a Traitor.

On Napa Valley an eye witness watched as the developer Draconi burned a house down in his presence. The news spread quickly and across all shards the populace gathered to see if the same was happening on thier shard. In general, the reaction to the slowly dealt justice was positive and joyous. Accounts banned, the owners of these houses will not recoup thier loss from those accounts or locations.

Later, the Origin Nudist Guil gathered at the scene and requested the same justice for Japan.

All in all a good day for Origin, all the shards and EA/Mythic. Well done says the population of Origin!

    Draconi's Luna Inferno

Late this evening I received a soot-covered pigeon from Renenutet of The Howling Voice. Unrolling the slightly singed scrap of parchment the bird carried, I learned that two homes stood in ruins - having been unexpectedly ravaged by intense fires. One home stood in the northeastern quarter of Luna, and the other in the northwestern quarter of Zento's suburbs. I swiftly retrieved my mount CythRi and rode for the scenes of destruction.

I had heard earlier in the day, through extra-planar means that the God of Conflagration, Draconi, had targeted his wrath at the home of citizens who had 'turned traitor' to the Sosarian way of life. The 'Traitor' label has not been assigned to these people lightly; inflammable effigies have been magically erected within the ruins. Apparently, these people are responsible for the destabilization of the shard economy and an influx of rare powerful artifacts.

    Draconi's Tokuno Flambe

Similar infernos rage across other shards, showing that this blight on our society is a widespread problem. Many thanks to Draconi for ridding us of these scoundrels!

High Council Sets Sights on Nosfentor

Posted on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, 8:05 PM EST by Martyna Zmuir (GreatLakes)

Last evening's 289th meeting of the High Council of Britannia was presided over by the Minister of Virtue, Lord DaKaren as Chancellor von Bayer and Vice-Chancellor Willa were unavailable. The meeting started off normally enough; however, Councilor Maelmordha of Newcastle accused the Temple of Mondain of conspiracy with the Empire of Tokuno. Apparently, several Temple members were seen during a tour of Zento. Seldane, a priest of Mondain, refuted the accusations as preposterous, although, he admitted that a tour of the city did indeed take place. He stated that it was merely a cultural exchange and nothing more.

Unfortunately, during this exchange, members of the Yew Militia Fel Brigade chose to act disrespectfully towards Seldane. This caused Seldane to leave the Civic Center in disgust, and drew criticism from Marthulius of the Council of Light who was seated in the gallery. Minister DaKaren apologized for the rude behavior, and stated that "This was not the normal state of affairs." Marthulius and a companion then left the Civic Center. Eventually, Councilor Akela, second in command of the Yew Militia, used his authority to quiet his troops. Chancellor von Bayer, when reached for comment today, had this to say, "I wish to add to the Minister's apology to the newcomer Marthulius... The Council does not condone disrespectful behavior, and we hope that you will return in the future."

Arzakon Smash of the Royal Knights of Redemption was the next to address the Council. He told of a meeting between R.K.R. and the Blue Lotus Clan at the Dojo in Zento. They revealed that the cargo that the 'monks' had been transporting through Britannia a few weeks ago had actually been the hearts of the children of Cove. Nosfentor had slain them and planned to use their hearts as some sort of cure. The prophecy received by Bishimi indicated that the hearts would help save the Tokuno people from a great catastrophe. Two books were retrieved by R.K.R. as well, but their contents have yet to be released to the public.

Minister DaKaren, upon learning of the heart's provenance angrily summoned Bunshichi, Emissary of the Empire of Tokuno, from the gallery. Bunshichi admitted that the Blue Lotus Clan was in possession of the hearts of the children of Cove, and that they were 'needed by the Empire.' The Minister expressed extreme displeasure that once again the Empress's 'honorable word' had failed to protect Britannian children. Bunshichi stated "The children had been protected to the best of the Empire's ability. They only had the best of intentions..." The Minister replied sarcastically with "The road to the Abyss is paved with 'good intentions.'"

The heated exchange continued for a while, resulting in the Minister's call for 'the end of Nosfentor.' This was met by approval from the crowd. He went on to caution "While we cannot destroy her by conventional means, we can banish her essence from the vessel she currently corrupts."

The B.A.F. will be searching out Nosfentor with the intention of capturing her. The Minister has ordered a search for rituals of banishment. If you see Nosfentor anywhere within the Kingdom, report her whereabouts to any B.A.F. member, or Council representative. Help shine the light of Virtue on the Shadowlord and drive her from our realm!

    * OOC Note: I would have had pictures to go with this story; however, the screenshot feature of KR appears to be broken since the last patch. *

    What was it?

I rode through the town, wondering what had happened. I heard the cracking of wooden beams as I got closer. The smell of the fire was so strong, but I pressed forward, and then before me I saw a crowd of people who had gathered.

One of the houses had burnt to the ground and everyone was smiling and laughing!

This was no ordinary house, and no ordinary fire, but was one the powers that be decided it was necessary to rid Luna of the evil that dwelled there. Praises filled the air.

As one of the fine homes in Luna, the Noble City of Paladins, burned to the ground, a crowd of onlookers cheered. To my surprise, not a single person tried to put out the flames. I do enjoy a good fire, and it made the cheeks of several ladies, including Calina, quite rosy, however this was not the reaction I would expect from "fine, upstanding" citizens of the realm. Standing in this, the holiest of our cities, it was odd to see such a desire for this home to be obliterated.

I heard cries of, "Finally, Justice!" and after listening to some conversations, came to the conclusion that the home had belonged to some sort of traitor, possibly from a sect known as Script. Details were sketchy. Despite my best efforts, I cannot seem to locate the owner of the home in question to find out his or her side of the story.

I suppose the lesson to be learned here is that if you are a member of the Script clan, you may very well get your house burned down while a mob points and laughs. If today was any indication, your neighbors certainly won't be dousing the flames.

here were seven winners of the Origin 2008 Valentine Scavenger Hunt which was held today at the peaceful new park north of the Justice Shrine at the waterfalls.

EA/Mythic hosted this wonderful, short and fast event through the beautiful Adidas who gave clear and repeated directions for the hunt.

When asked to repeat the directions, this was done gracefully and all directions were repeated multiple times. This is necessary as some there were obviously hard of hearing after 10 years of Sosaria and others were in the confusing new character role.  Eventually all understood and grabbed a bag with the hunt list.

It sure did not take long for five winners to get thier bags in the 2008 Scavenger Hunt Chest. The five winners received a Lavender Rose in a vase that when they picked it up became engraved with 2008 Valentine Scavenger Hunt Champion. These five winners were

    Fillia
    Devious Desire
    Nosgoth
    De
    Akasha WStrider

Congratulations to all! But the most wonderful part of this moment of magic were the two addtional winners of the day. EA/Mythic, and all the people of Origin Shard!

    Chain Questioning adds new life

Arriving early as I usually do to Monday Night Madness at Ice Castle my outfit last night was picked to match the Valentines theme of this weeks game, Chests of Doom & Delight. Of course I knew my girlfriend Ms.Vanna White would be dolled up for the holiday and she was.

MOA staffer Demitria for some reason thought we were dressed to the nines because it was her birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEMITRIA, I hope it was a good one.

As the patrons arrived Vanna started passing out the sweets she had been baking all week just for this event. The peach cobble was to die for.....oh yes and Vanna did, more than once. It is all part of the fun and games.

With FiFi LaForge behind me, Mythrendal to my left and Chaotic Barbie seated to my right the game began with an almost full house.

Though other MOA staffers Malikae and Melian were in MOA uniforms, several patrons were outfitted in Valentine themes. Lady Jezebel in deep fushcia and black looking fierce and sexy, FiFi in red and black, Farrah in purples, Toad in red and Nazdog proudly showing off his rubble purple pants. It was Walter O'Dim the most famous cross dresser on Great Lakes that made an appearance just before the game ended in a pink dress crafted by Easter Bunny that wowed the crowd. We had a laugh as the shirt I was wearing was crafter by Easter Bunny also years ago. A reminder that Easter is early this year and right around the corner.

There were many great items in the chests given away as usual, 7th anniversary token, yellow hair dye, barbed kit, vorpal blade, heritage token, white net and deed to an ankh were a few.

It was this new line of questioning that most patrons found refreshing during this game. Melian did chaining or word associating in her questions rather than the traditional trivia. I sure hope they do this again. It added a new twist and fresh air to this favorite game of mine and many others.

p.s. Thank you Vanna for the Valentines Card.

Tenth Anniversary of the UO House of Commons

Do you have a favorite number? Perhaps a lucky one that means something special to you or one that happens to pop up in the darndest of places? Now, those of you conspiracy theorists who saw that film, The Number 23, put away your tinfoil hats and ponder a bit on yours. I wouldn't say I really have a lucky number so much as I've recently grown rather fond of one number in particular - one hundred and fourteen. Now, given any number just on its own without context is rather ambiguous and mundane... Without something to define or quantify in some fashion, a number is just a number. One hundred and fourteen what exactly...? Years? Well, Google informs me that one hundred and fourteen years ago, W.K. Dickson received a patent on motion picture film and was hailed as the inventor of the motion picture camera... but that's not why it's my favorite number. One hundred and fourteen protons? That's how many element 114, also called ununquadium or eka-lead, on the Periodic table of the Elements had for the few seconds of its half life before decaying... or so Wikipedia said. The amount of search results for 114 is staggering... and across such a broad array of topics, too - from asteroids almost 100km in diameter like 114 Kassandra to the total number of "suras" or "chapters" in the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book. But the one reference to the number that means the most to me and hopefully will strike a chord with many, many others is one you won't find on a search engine or in any encyclopedia, but one you'd find celebrated on this very Web site.

Join the staffmembers of both UO Stratics and EA/Mythic's Live team this Tuesday, February 12th as we come together once more for the 114th UO House of Commons to discuss the current state and future of Ultima Online. The UO HoC offers a unique opportunity for the community to ask direct questions of the development team in a real-time environment. Tuesday's HoC marks the 10th anniversary of the very first House of Commons Developer chat held way back on February 12th, 1998 between our then fledgling network and the team from Origin Systems, Inc. It's hard to believe that ten years have passed since that first chat concluded, but the premise was simple and straightforward from the beginning and it stuck... the UO House of Commons page on Stratics reflects that in its motto: "In order to form a more common bond between the Peoples and Rulers of Britannia." There have been plenty of both peoples and rulers that have come and gone these ten years past, but the UO HoC marches on! Believe it or not, but we still have the chat logs from every one of the previous 113 Developer chats as well as over 30 UO Celebrity chats with various members of the community like ImaNewbie of the popular Web comic and Tug from Tugsoft, creator of UO Assist, available for browsing. Take a trip with me now down memory lane as I highlight a few of those burning questions on every UO player's mind back in 1998 at that very first UO House of Commons...
DenDragon - Has any consideration been given to trash cans? Or a method for players to delete unwanted items?
    Stormwynd - that's a neat idea
Stormwynd - Maybe a player house only feature?
DenDragon - I see your point... Maybe in towns and houses only?
DesignerD - Lord knows we'd love to add ways to reduce item count ;) We're just very... uhh... "cautious" (read "cynical") about the ways which players will use features
v - as in it requires a player house like a vendor or guild stone?
    DenDragon - heh, I understand
DesignerD - Our first rule for a design is, "OK, how will they exploit it?"

Ahh yes... 1998. I yearn for such simple times when the hot topic was getting trashcans!
HellBoyEC - ..are there any event/plot specific questions I can answer?
DenDragon - HellBoy--I guess I'll throw forward the obligitory Necromancy question. :)
DenDragon - Are we close to seeing it implemented, or has it been set on the back burner?
HellBoyEC - I think Storm can field that....
HellBoyEC - The Liche's who are making waves currently
HellBoyEC - are some of the earliest examples of necromancy in the game
Stormwynd - It has been on the backburner for a while, but I hope to get time to work on it real soon now.
Stormwynd - There is already one spell implemented, but I haven
Stormwynd - oops... haven't had a chance to continue on them lately.
DenDragon - I take it Necromancy will be considered a new skill.. Along with other possible new magicks?
    Stormwynd - Possibly.... :-)
DenDragon - One more question on my part: The dungeon Doom--will that be completed within the current UO world, or will an expansion CD be necessary?
    DesignerD - Can't answer that :) Sorry!

(As a sidenote, both Necromancy and the Dungeon Doom were released (unleashed?) in the Ultima Online: Age of Shadows expansion in early 2003! Should we be calling DenDragon "NostraDenmus" instead?)

Posted on Sunday, February 10, 2008, 11:36 AM EST by Larisa (CommunityNews)

This just in from our friends at UOGuide.

What an exciting time for UOGuide. The first month of this new year has been a flurry of activity, adding well over 1,000 new pages to the site. Due to in large part by the merger of UOStuff, UOGuide now has well over 3,000 web pages of UO information. Not only did the amount of content explode, but the merger was also fully completed in January.

The Main Page has a brand new look, adding three new features. Two of them are ideas taken from the old UO website. The first is Featured Establishments. Players of houses which serve a public function can submit their building for featuring. It is rotated on a weekly basis and is a great way to advertise a location. To submit an establishment click here. The second feature is the Skill of the Week. Each week one skill will be featured. The third feature is all new, featuring different points of interest in the world of Britannia. This weeks featured location are the Meer Catacombs

    .

We are also continuing to feature screenshots on the main page. A new method of submission has been setup. Email your screenshots to [email protected]. Be sure to include a little caption about what is going on in the picture.

There is so much new content this month it is hard to choose only a few to highlight.

    • New Player Quests - Almost every skill has a quest in New Haven. These quests are the quickest way to train up to 50.
    • Slayer Information - All you could ever know about slayer weapons and their types.
    • Quests - The UOStuff merger has added a wealth of detailed quest information. Search for quest information either by area or by NPC.
    • Recipes - Almost every recipe has been added with crafting information and item properties.
    • Artifacts - Hundreds of artifacts are listed with detailed properties and where they come from.

As always, UOGuide is seeking new people to contribute. While 3,000 pages may seem to cover nearly every possible aspect of UO, nearly another 3,000 are waiting to be created. Absolutely anyone can help build UOGuide, all it takes is a few moments to register an account. In seconds you will have access to edit almost any page or create one on any UO subject you wish to write about. I hope you will come help us out.

Lord Ravenscar weds Lady Emma Silvermane in Moonglow!

Friends, family, and citizens of Sosaria.  Lord Ravenscar and Lady Emma Silvermane were joined together in holy uo matrimony last evening. The beautifully decorated "Lycaeum" of Moonglow welcomed guests as the ceremony was held inside amongst it's flora and sculpture. Guests were greeted and seated after signing the guest registry shortly after 9pm. The Lycaeum's floor laced with white silk in between the seating adorned by white and lavender snowdrops set the tone for the ceremony to commence in the joining of two loves.
The ceremony officiated by Lady Fable began with her welcome to the gathered crowd and the arrival of Lord Ravenscar to the altar. Dressed in the finest suit Guardians Gate had ever produced, he stood firm as the crowd rose to their feet to gaze upon the beauty of the blushing bride who now began the walk down the aisle led by life long friend Raphalon. Bards strummed out the gentle song of marriage on their lutes as she approached the altar. There she stood Lady Emma Silvermane long flowing silken dress as she met her new husband to be.

The eloquent ceremony began as the two exchanged vows and tokens of love and devotion repeating after the Lady Fable. Each agreeing to the bindings of marriage. After which they were presented to those in attendance as husband and wife to the roar of the crowd! Lord Ravenscar then sealed the deal with a kiss for his new bride as fireworks crackled in the air and the crowd stood in applause. The party then took reception inside the Ottersrun Taphouse in Guardians Gate before starting their new love out with a bang by leading an expedition to the Tokuno Champion Spawn to round out the affair. A hearty congratulations to you both and well wishes from us all on your new venture. Febuary truly is the month for love.....

Or at least it feels like it, anyway. For those of you who don't have lovely sunny weather to enjoy, we have answers to some questions instead! Check out info on curing poison, making bows, and more.

"I've noticed that it takes very little mana to cast the Spellweaving spell Summon Fey (like 1 pt of mana). I was reading that it was suppose to be like 31 pts of mana. Is that intentional?"

Yes - the Guide for Spellweaving has old data (and Leurocian, in his copious free time, has volunteered to get me all the new data, so stay tuned.) However, Summon Fey costs 10 mana, not 1 - that's how it's listed in-game and that's what my quick test showed. I'm assuming this was just a typo in the question, but if anyone's seeing data to the contrary, let us know!

"Mondain's legacy bowyer/fletcher recipe weapons (non-artifact) have 0% chance of exceptional with 100 fletching. To my understanding, a crafting talisman will not give exceptional chance unless you have at least 1%. Is that true?"

The reason those recipe weapons have a 0% exceptional chance is because they are considered minor artifacts, and aren't intended to be exceptionally crafted. It's hard-set, rather than a function of their difficulty, so talismans won't help. (It's not a reflection of how talismans work, just a function of those particular items.)

Now, the argument could be (and has been) made that they're not powerful enough to be worth it without a way to boost their stats. It's certainly something to look into - it's just not technically a bug.

"On hit spell damage question. What level of magery/eval is the damage of the on hit spell calculated ( lightning, magic missile, fireball, harm)?"

The Evaluate Intelligence used for calculating the damage of on-hit spells is 80. The base damage is determined by the spell's circle - so Magic Missile has a base damage of 1d4 + 10, and so on. (For non-PnP folk, that means roll randomly between 1-4, then add 10.) Magery doesn't come into it at all, actually.

"What is the formula to calculate the chance for Cure and ArchCure to detoxify poison?"

The Cure formula is as follows: Chance to Cure = (10000 + (Magery * 75) - (poison strength * 3100) / 100. This means that at Legendary Magery, you have a 35% chance to cure level 5 poison.

The Archcure formula is as follows: Chance to Arch Cure = (10000 + (Magery * 75) - (poison strength * 1750) / 100. This means that at Legendary Magery, you have a 100% chance to cure level 5 poison. On everyone within a 2-3 tile radius of you. And you only need 63 Magery to successfully cast it 100% of the time. Hmmm...

"Ok why the HECK would you Remove the clouds from KR?"

    Our Lead Programmer Supreem says,

"Ultimately it was my decision to remove the clouds. *puts on flame retardant suit*

The clouds as they were implemented didn't achieve the desired effect. They made the game significantly less bright which doesn't fit with the style of Ultima Online. We plan to bring them back in the future once we bring them in line with the overall feel of the game."

    Playguide Update Roundup:

A few more edits and tweaks this week:

Item Properties : The Table now distinguishes between Melee and Missile weapons (there are some differences,) Velocity and Balanced are listed in the table, and their effects are described with the others. Also, the exceptions to property ranges for Runic-crafted bows are listed.

Runic Properties : Removed last week's incorrect statement about stacking properties and replaced it with the correct info about property ranges on Runic-crafted bows.

A little thin, but then, it's been a Very Busy Week .

    Jacksonville Town Hall

Remember, the first Town Hall of the new year will be March 1 in Jacksonville, FL at Dave and Busters. You can now RSVP , so if you're planning to come, please do so!

Alert readers will also notice that the next Town Hall is listed there - in Bethesda, MD, on May 10th. Feel free to RSVP for that one, too - it's going to be fun, because it's nice and close to the office :)

I'm off to snuggle my Stuffies ...

Today the above screenshot came my way from Bazer of XV.
It appears the ghost that has hung about the Brit Moongate for a very long time making eeeerie hallow sounds scaring many a soul has disappeared. Has he died ? I went there myself looking for the ghost and he was not in sight nor roaming the forest area nearby. Has anyone seen him?

This past week as you may have noticed there was no Obituary Column as very few screenshots were sent to me. Since my plea on the boards tons have filtered in and many from Doom. Below are just Doom deaths from this past week. Enjoy all you gauntlet lovers!

Mystery in Ocllo Leads To Suspicious Activity In Dawn
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Thursday, February 7, 2008, 9:34 PM EST by Sara of Baja (Baja)

Oriana and I had heard rumors about a shortage of workers available for hire on Ocllo.  When we went to investigate, we discovered by talking to the shopkeepers that approximately 20 carpenters and general labor workers had been hired by Grand Duchess WildStar of the player-run city, The Kingdom of Dawn located east of Dungeon Wrong on the Felucca facet, several weeks ago.  When further questioned, they could not provide us with more information, so we walked about the town trying to find anyone who could.

One of the remaining workers told us that "the lady who hired the men was vague about what they would be doing; only saying that they had to stay in the Kingdom until the work was done, food and shelter would be provided and they would be gated back when finished."  He further stated that "she told them that they would leave tomorrow morning and to meet at the bank where she would pay them 5000 gold each, then they would be gated to Dawn."

With no more information to be discovered on Ocllo, we traveled to the entrance of Wrong and made our way south along the valley until we reached the end of the mountain, where we immediately came upon The Dawn Museum of Dreams.  We turned northeast and started to hear voices, pack animals, and hammering and sawing coming from up north and headed that way.  We soon came upon five men working under the supervision of Tarwyn Runeblade, GM Crafter, Dawn Order of Merchants (DOM), on a building named Ethereal Travel of Dawn.

Oriana and I approached Tarwyn Runeblade and introduced ourselves.  He glared at us and asked, "What do you want?"

"We are here because we heard about a worker shortage on Ocllo, investigated and learned that they were here.  What is going on here, Mr. Runeblade?"

"We are doing some work on some buildings here in Dawn."

"And you need 20 workers to do 'some work on some buildings here in Dawn' and they have been working for several weeks?"  Tarwyn Runeblade nodded his head and said, "Now that you have solved your little mystery you can leave."

"Thank you for your help, Mr. Runeblade."

We started to walk toward the workers, but he stepped in front of us and said, "You may not talk to the workers, they are busy."

We realized that we were not going to learn any more information today, so bade farewell to Tarwyn Runeblade, waved to the workers and walked until we were just still in his line-of-sight.  I cast the spell, recall, as if I were leaving but hid instead.  Once he moved out of the area, Oriana marked a rune so we could come back at a later date, and we returned home so I could record what we had just seen.

Both Oriana and I suspect there is something afoot, and plan to keep an eye on Mr. Runeblade's activities in and around Dawn.

    Zento Housing Available Now!
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, 5:49 PM EST by Blackrock_Frank (Catskills)
    >>> Tokuno Islands News <<<Hello, my public! It is I, Lord Franklin, with another news update that is sure to bring joy into your little lives.

Being the friend of the masses that I am, I have found three places for you to place a brand-new home, all within a stone's throw of a major bank. I know how important that is to some of you. Honestly, I have never understood the fascination with standing around at banks. Some of you wait there, glassy-eyed, for what I do not know. You look as though you're staring at a mirage, trying to determine what is real and what is not. Some of you yell that you're selling this or that, and that is fine. No harm trying to make a gold piece or two. It is the ones of you who just stand there, endlessly, that I worry about.

Being close to a bank, however, is only one of the benefits of these housing spots! Imagine living close to a town bustling with life! Imagine being surrounded by cranes and sheep and cats and horses! If you're a new tamer, this would be paradise. Fishermen, too, would find these spots have something to offer, as they are all close to the ocean. Lumberjacks looking for a nearly endless supply of trees would do well here.

While the first spot will accomodate only the very smallest of houses, it is just east of the main city of Zento on the isle of Makoto-Jima in Tokuno. This would be an idea starter spot for the newest of our citizens. Every convenience is just a few steps away in town to the west!

The next housing area is just north of the northwest corner of Zento. Somewhat bigger than the first plot, this area will make a calm, serene place to build a new life. Escape the hustle and bustle of Luna and Umbra. Why settle for a house in Trammel when you can be one of the lucky few to live in Tokuno?

The last house plot I found is south of Zento, but still on the main path around the city. It boasts not only a pond, but benches to relax on as you watch the nearby cranes frolic. Truly a peaceful setting! The ocean is a few steps south, and the bank and town are a short walk north. This is a great location.

While these plots will not hold the gigantic homes that some of us have become used to, they will give you a chance to live in a quieter, more exotic location. And, as I mentioned before, they're close to a bank.

I also have to say, to the ladies who took the time to spell out this message for me, I *heart* you too. Feel free to seek me out and show me how much you *heart* me!

May You Live In Interesting Times,
    Lord Franklin

On the streets of Britain: Samurai-Jack

Posted on Wednesday, February 6, 2008, 4:32 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)

I love to wander the streets of Britain and strike up conversations, in my travels today I ran into the one and only Samurai-Jack. It seemed he was his charming self speaking with another player. I couldn't help it, my curiosity got the best of me and I had to ask...

Aren't you the guy that join's guilds and pk's (player kills) their members?
"I kill people like you daily."

At this point I wondered why on all of Sosaria one would do such a thing and admit it so proudly as I explained that I would not be so proud of such a thing. He continued to explain how he did not need to be mature to play Ultima Online or need a reputation. Which may be true, "but why make a name for yourself this way?" was all I could think in regards to that. I had to assume he thought it would be funny to tell me this:

"I kill women and children first, always."

And what purpose does this serve?
    "Gettin' money."

So it's based on greed then?
"No. More of fun. Well a bit of both."

So you get some perverse enjoyment out of taking advantage of people's trust?
"Oh my god, totally. I have my way with guilded noobs."

This pretty much summed this one up in a nutshell. Wrapping up he said this, "Have fun with your amazing Ultima Online career doing absolutely nothing. Like I care."

Well, that is obvious with your total lack of respect and courtesy. Have a good one.
    "Adios."

    Tien buen dia*.

There you have folks, Samurai-Jack. I think the Romans said it best for a person like this, Audio, video, disco .** Trying to keep the community informed, your Atlantic Shard Reporter, Ishtar.

    *Have a good day.

Oceania Olympic Games: Summary 29th Jan - 6th Feb

It's been another week or so of fun and games in Oceania as the Olympic Games have continued with the Track & Field, Survival, Tailoring and Stealing Events. The medal tallies have sure changed a lot, and it's looking unmistakably like a foregone conclusion at this late stage of the game.

It's not to late to join in, though, to see if you can win a medal for your favourite City, or for yourself! So without further ado, here are the latest results...

Medal Tallies as at 6th February:

    And the individual events...

    TRACK & FIELD
GOLD - Chief Y (Skara Brae)
    SILVER - Ereon (Minoc)
    BRONZE - Lord Lionheart (Britain)

Contestants pass one of the invisible checkpoints.

The Track & Field event was essentially a Cross-Country footrace. Contestants were given Olympic-Grade Running Shoes, dyed to match their City Colours, and were then taken to the beginning of the track. The track was to be run on foot, and contestants had to traverse dirt road and swamp terrain before they would arrive at the finish line in Britain. There were invisible checkpoints along the way, where hidden OPEN staff would check all contestants were on foot, on track and not recalling.

Competitors: Chief Y (Skara Brae), Walter/Ereon (Minoc), Lord Lionheart (Britain), Don Quan (Trinsic), Queen Aglaranna (Magincia).

    SURVIVAL
GOLD - Chief Y (Skara Brae) Best time: 3m14S
SILVER - Queen Aglaranna (Magincia) Best time: 5m10S
BRONZE - Chivato (Trinsic) Best time: 5m29S

Chief Y lights the fire, completing his campsite.

The Survival event was fairly simple. Contestants had to duplicate a campsite setup, in traditional here's-one-we-prepared-earlier style. One at a time, Competitors laid out the items as supplied, to match the adjacent site. Once complete, contestants lit their campfire, signalling they were done. Any errors in their design cost them a 30 second time penalty.

Competitors: Chief Y (Skara Brae), Queen Aglaranna (Magincia), Chivato (Trinsic).

    TAILORING
GOLD - Chief Y (Skara Brae)
    SILVER - Queen Aglaranna (Magincia)
    BRONZE - Lord Lionheart (Britain)

Spectators watch as the Tailors furiously sew and snip!

Here, the five entrants were led to their sewing rooms via holes in the roof, and once settled, set up their own vendors to display their soon-to-be-made outfits. The instructions were to create six items, with the following attributes:

    1 x item with 12% Physical
    1 x item with 12% Fire
    1 x item with 12% Cold
    1 x item with 12% Poison
    1 x item with 12% Energy
    1 x item with 3 x matching resists

They could only craft leather items from the "Leather Armor" menu of the Sewing kit, or Cloth hats from the "Hats" menu. Naturally, they were given sufficient leather and cloth to craft with. Chief Y (on A.D.I.D.A.S) was first to finish, after having great difficulty with his final piece, and the three others that were left (Lady Kat had to leave early) then had a mini "sew-off" to decide Silver and Bronze.

Competitors: Chief Y (Skara Brae), Queen Aglaranna (Magincia), Lord Lionheart (Britain), Lady Kat (Skara Brae), Dar (Magincia)

    STEALING
GOLD - Chief Y (Skara Brae)
    SILVER - Lord Lionheart (Britain)
    BRONZE - Dar (Magincia)

    Competitors madly follow the Victim!

It was the first test of the Feluccan Olympic Arena and contestants were gated directly inside the heavily-fortified walls. Registrations were taken, and the rules were explained. The thieves had to follow an overloaded pack horse, named "Victim of Theft" and steal as much as they could in ten minutes. At the end, the total weight stolen by each contestant was added, and the heaviest weights stolen overall took the medals.

Competitors: Chief Y (Skara Brae), Lord Lionheart (Britain), Dar (Magincia), Queen Aglaranna (Magincia), Takami Tuyarruum (Moonglow).

Thanks to everyone who has supported and continues to support OPEN and the Oceania Olympic Games! There are only four more Events to go, so stay tuned for the final report!

Sad news [Originally by Busty Wench - photos Seriya De Lacey and Busty Wench]

I'd long hoped that I would never have to write this post.

Most of you will have varying levels of familiarity with Chris Turner, known to most as Laton or Choma.

For just over a year, Chris has been struggling to beat a rare form of Lymphoma, which has taken him through seemingly endless bouts of chemotherapy, countless drugs and more recently a stem cell transplant.

Just before Christmas, the doctors discovered that the Lymphoma had returned and that there would be nothing more that they could do for him.

Its my sad duty to tell you all that Chris passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of saturday morning (19th January).

He will be very sorely missed by many of us.

Not to forget this little gem, taken a few years ago when we had a meet in Leeds.

I didn't copy and paste all the comments but believed that Chris/Laton/Choma deserved to be remembered here.

Photographs always make someone so much more real - this was a man some of us were lucky enough to know either virtually or really.

    Guardsmen Narrowly Escape Poisoning!
Free Ale Found To Be Not So Great!
Last evening the Yewish guardsmen were enjoying drinking a rather dodgy load of “free ale” they found in their tavern. Apparently this free ale was snapped up by the eager guardsmen but soon after they found them selves feeling sickly. Thankfully two higher ranked guards noticed something wasn’t right with this “free ale” and stopped the free for all as quickly as they could. It was later found that the Yewish rebels were behind the entire thing! One wonders what tactics these rebels will use next!

    Rumours

Sources from Cove claim a courier from one of its colonies arrived a few days ago bearing the following message from its absent Baron...

Rumour has it that Van has the hots for a Trinsic woman named Maddy. He was apparently kneeling down and offering her a ring! One wonders where he got that from!

I’ve been hearing worrying reports that Captain Kaelyn is using rather underhanded tactics on prisoners these days. Better watch out all you criminals who consider entering Trinsic!

    Adverts

Jern Fretting, tinker and fully qualified blacksmith with arms lore, will be travelling the highways and byways of Sosaria, at odd hours during most days but never after 8pm. He will be available for making items free, if provided with the necessary raw materials and equipment. He will also provide basic free farrier services (horses only, both mounts and sumpters): simple sprains, sores, removal of stones and the like. Shoeings can also be done where there is a forge and anvil.

In addition to chance meetings on the road, appointments may be made either by notes left in the mailbox outside The Trinsic Rose Tavern or at the garden gate of Fretting Cottage in the Village of Silverleaf (postcode Slf) or by mail-carrier to 322791984.

REBELS RE-EMERGE AS GUARDSMEN ARE HURT!

Shocks this week for the guardsmen militia as remnants of the Yewish rebel movement reappeared to cause grief to members of the Guardsmen Militia. Whether or not the small gangs were what remains of the Free Yew Volunteers is yet to be known, but the armed pockets of rebel activity have stung a number of patrolling guardsmen around our Northern township. While an initial disturbance in the King's Deer Tavern was eventually repelled, a number of lone guardsmen have been caught up by disaffected citizens still frustrated in the wake of the "O'Gara Uprising."

The latest victim of such an assault is reported to be new Marksman Corporal, Ffion Derwyn! A pair of celtic men were spotted dragging the fallen petty officer to the sheep pens West of the Keep. The group exchanged an array of colourful language before the senior guardswoman was deprived of her uniform basics! Stripped of the colours of Yew, the rebels even demanded Ms. Derwyn's parade arm as they stood in judgment. "You can have these back, when you are fit to protect Yew!" one of her aggressors shouted.

Whatever her 'test' was meant to be, it is apparent the markswoman refused and was pushed to her knees and restrained, as another of the gang took her beloved golden arms. This assault was not the first, a recent string of similar offences have left a number of more junior guardsmen fleeing back to their garrison home shy of kilts and sashes. Beyond the symbolic, the purpose of these assaults is unknown. Whether or not such incidents are crimes of angry frustration, or a more co-ordinated series of assaults remains to be discovered; though it should not be disputed that these happenings represent a return to confidence in Yew's dissenting rebels.

An Excerpt from Bladius Dart's Log

    Captain's log

4th day of the 2nd month

So Te'ani's guilty of High Treason.
Could've told you that myself without the need for an endless stream of evidence.

Most of the evidence discussed was previously known to me so for the most part I spent my time listening to the barbs being flung from the audience.
Far more interesting than listening to the seemingly infinite list of Lanoor's conquests.

Tripps defeated Lumbard in the Last Man Standing and won the monthly halberd which I have still yet to find. It's in the Tradepost somewhere. You'd have thought something that size would be fairly easy to find.

    ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

    Captain's log

5th day of the 2nd month

I'm not sure what Wilkes' cattle fetish is but I'm slightly disturbed by his attempts to include the militia in his weird farmyard games.

Seems the rebels tried to poison us last night, Fraser and Eagle-eye spent most of the evening running back and forth between the woods and their stools (not those types of stools) in the tavern. Sent Helmgard up to investigate where the poisoned ale came from as apparently some 'monks from the Abbey' (very original!) donated it to The Deer.

Lanoor was killed yesterday, which means I'll have to find another female victim for verbal abuse. With Nadia, Hiroko, Walsh and Foxe gone, Megumi and Swayne barely on active duty and Lanoor dead, I'm distinctly lacking a potential target. I can't target married women so that's Cordelia, Katrine, Floria and Tanya (She does the cooking and I don't want to end up doing a Fraser! Oh yeah and I love her and wouldn't want her to be the butt of my jokes, in case this is discovered) out of the equation.
I suppose I'll have to choose between Annwyn, Kathris, Verity and Ffion.
Two bitter middle-aged Markies and two dopey Waywatchers. Joy.

MOA has a big heart, and we are not just talking about the big heart that graces the auction house roof in celebration of the month of February.

February, the month of roses, candy, kisses, dinners and jewelry has Valentines Day right smack in the middle of it.
The image of the heart has long been associated with this holiday.
The heart image/logo has many meanings and when it comes to MOA it means BIG.
BIG in giving back to the community, BIG in hosting events, BIG in creating fun times and BIG in making memories for many a player.
Wednesday and thursday night auctions have played a large part in these wonderful things.

Auctions are held every Wednesday and Thursday night at 9pm Eastern time at the auction house located just one step from the Bucs Portal on Trammel. Gates are available from West Brit Bank and often the Luna Bank 15 minutes prior to start time and ususualy run during most of the event.

    Greater Library Association Update

Over the last few months, the Greater Library Association of Chesapeake (GLAC) has gained three new establishments. Unfortunately we have also lost one. Yet, the numbers have climed to 27 over the previous 25 and two more are expected to open their doors in the next few months. Some others have moved their location or made revisions.

Herein, is a brief overview of changes and additions to the (GLAC.)

First, Gryphon Hall no longer hosts a library as it has become more dedicated as a meeting and conference establishment. It has also moved one plot over to gain additional space.

Blue Light Tavern has moved back to it's original location while still hosting the H-J Gate Rune Library next to the Moongate at Pax-Oku in Homare-Jima. Essentially, the original name of the library collection, by Zoe Quartermain has been reclaimed and perserved.

The Museum of Virtues has moved out of the desert Dry Highlands of Malas to Trammel in the area of Guardians Gate just East of the Guard Outpost there.

Three other libraries have been added all of which are located in Malas:

*Hecate's Haunted Mansion, previously known as Hecate's School of Magery
    *TBA Reading Library
    *Treasured Goods Shoppe and Library

To learn more about any and all of the (GLAC) establishments please visit Libraries of Chesapeake

    A Letter from Live

Hello everybody! On behalf of the newly formed Live Design team, I’d like to take a moment to introduce ourselves and our goals for UO.

    The Team
Allow me to present our newest designer: Adida. She joins us from the world of Game Masters, where she served most diligently and skillfully before relocating with our group to become a designer. Even in the short time we’ve worked together we’ve managed to accomplish a lot, and I’m looking more and more forward to what she can do!

For myself, I started out as a junior designer on UO back in 2005, right after the release of Mondain’s Legacy. Since then, I’ve been bouncing back and forth between groups as needed, and also contributed some of the larger systems for the live events. You may remember me from such disasters as “The Ophidian Invasion,” “The Destruction of Haven,” and the “The Fall of Magincia.”

We’re relatively new, but growing! We also have the advantage of having old friends like Leurocian around (who have their own responsibilities now), and in the grand tradition of Ando and Mesanna, you’ll probably be seeing some new faces from the production staff appearing on test centers.

In short, having a chance to actually work fulltime on the live side of things is an exciting and daunting prospect. So without further ado, here’s what we’re up to:

    The Mission
Our mission is to provide UO with the greatest content and gameplay publishes possible. This means Bug Fixes. Balances. Enhancements. New Content. It means delivering a plot arc the likes you’ve never seen, with a dedicated events team who’re passionate about not only UO’s history, but Ultima’s itself.

Those are pretty direct statements, so let’s explore their impact:

    • Bug Fixes, Balances: UO is a brilliant world, thanks to both our fervent community and the years of development the team has given her. UO is also complex: we need to fix the bugs. We have longstanding issues and completely new problems that pop up on a weekly basis. Critical issues that interfere with your enjoyment of UO are as intolerable to our team as they are to you.

Just to be clear: our focus is server bugs, not client. While larger systems will take some time, there’re things that need to change immediately – which leads us to our next topic.
    • Cheating: We hate it as much as you do. Allow me to reiterate: cheating will not be tolerated.

Please report anything you see through the in-game petitioning system, and larger issues to Jeremy through the Feedback system on the Herald.
    • New Content: UO thrives on new content. Britannia was designed as a world, and everything we add to it, permanent or no, leads it further along that path. We’re not only excited about the coming event arcs, but also just the fun, interesting things we can do.

This Valentine’s Day was the first project we all had an opportunity to work together on, and we think you’ll be pleased with the results. Having a live events team again is, I believe, one of the strongest parts of our initiative. After all, Adida can’t wait to show you the surprises she’s prepared for you!
So in closing, I just want to say how happy I am to have been extended this new opportunity on UO: the game I love. Being able to work with people like Leurocian, Mesanna, Adida, and all the new people I’ve met here is an honor, and I can’t wait for you to get to know them better too.

    Hi From Cal
    Calvin Crowner
    05 Feb 2008 16:49:31 EST

I'll introduce myself by stating what the heck my job title means. I am the Development Manager for Ultima Online. Hold on a minute, that kind of just caught up to me. No pressure. This means that server crashes, staffing the team, schedule decisions, prioritizing bug fixes, squelching rumors, and emanating a general sense of well-being are well within my responsibilities for delegation. Restated: when it’s “broke” I try to figure out who is going to fix it. If it’s not broken I do my best to make sure it remains that way.

Did programming once. Hated it. Did sales. Had such a sense of self-loathing I often tried to determine whether to expense gas on business reports or suck straight from the nozzle holding a cigarette. Like many who are reading this letter: I love games. All games. I am an old school Efreet-cover carrying purveyor of Dungeons and Dragons who still has d100s in a mustard yellow TSR dice bag next to my boxed copies of Privateer 2 and Crusader: No Remorse. Run on sentence complete.

From this perspective, I am more than honored to hold the torch for Ultima Online. I spent a bit of time with the group at EARS before the team transitioned to Mythic here in Fairfax. During those few weeks I learned more than a bit from the experts of Ultima Online -- I was introduced to a lot of passion for Ultima lore, and respect for the entity that is Ultima AND the Ultima Online community.

I named a rock group Smock Llama Mama once. But that’s a different story all together.

I am here to break radio silence. First and foremost: by no stretch of John Cleese’s imagination is Ultima Online going away. On the contrary, if you could see and smell the amount of right and left brain molecules burning between developers here, you might wonder how we could stand to work among the palpable sulfuric fumes. We have some great plans in the coming months. There are three major story arcs in the works culminating in what I can only describe for legal and marketing reasons as an “Epic Event” coming this Spring … Applying my First Rule of Molyneux, make that late Spring.

The first of said events will literally incorporate showing a little love to the players. Well a lot of love to the players. Our lead designer spends way too much time studying chocolate. So if you have an endorphin deficit, the Valentine’s Day Event is for you. Next, the Mad Mage will finally make his way into Britannia. Look for the sightings of general mayhem and schizophrenia some time late March. I’m sure you’d like to know more. I would like to tell you more, however already understanding that these few words have obligated me to several years spinning straw into gold for a wee man, I’ll hold off on any other announcements.

In addition, we are taking a bit of course correction from Jeremy on prioritizing our feature list. You should know that we have been working pretty steadily on answering the mail for both live events and several major systems the community is clamoring for. Understand we are by no means idle, and against all sanctioned methods of scope and project planning, we are doing a bit of parallel engineering. Do not try this at home without a certified project lead.

In closing, please stay tuned. We have some amazing, well-scoped, and thoroughly achievable plans – a lot of them silly, most well-intentioned, but all of them passionate about the continued evolution of the Ultima universe. The most important thing to remember is the team now dedicated to Ultima Online is growing and so thrilled about what’s to come … your best chance for survival is a +5 Helmet of Endurance … and your seatbelts.

Welcome to the 13th Super Stratics Sunday. Firstly apologies that we missed a couple of Sundays out. As you may have noticed this one isn’t being done by mapper instead it is being done by me. Mapper sends his apologies he is extremely busy at the moment. Im sure you guys wont mind a little while with me though.

If you have an establishment, a guild, or a news item you would like featured in a Super Stratics Sunday or indeed any news items for an article please send it over to [email protected] or PM myself or Mapper.

This week I carried on with Mappers tour of Luna shops.

First up following on from where Mapper stopped was Luna Mart, owned by tweedledee. Selling stone furniture, gems, LRC armor and Dragon barding deeds just to name a few. This one houses 20 vendors as of my count today.

Up next was the 3 plots that are The Gold Factory. Just the one screenshot since these guys were featured alone in SSS a few weeks back. For the full rundown of this one click here

Next was Et In Arcadia Ego situated just inside the south entrance to Luna a nice small shop selling recipes, repair deeds, resources and Powerscrolls plus more besides. Housing 17 vendors on my count today

Well that puts us over 100 vendors. Next week I will continue the tour round Luna.

Enemy at the Gate, Part II

Posted on Sunday, February 3, 2008, 3:18 AM EST by Sheridan_of_ElF (Pacific)
    >>> Felucca Facet News <<<Greetings, folks! It's another installment of Enemy at the Gate where we take a look at the PvP and drama surrounding Pacific's Yew moongate in Felucca. The fights pictured below took place earlier on in the week and, once again, we have some heroes... we have some zeroes... and of course some plain, good ole' knockdown, drag-out fights courtesy of FO_O, FL, H@X, Bury, CD, and more. Enjoy!

We'll start this week off with some random killshots.

Mythias seems to have it out for Zorro. You didn't hear it from me, but perhaps it has something to do with a certain letter Z found embroidered on a certain pair of unmentionables Mythias found in his dear old mum's room... Scandalous.

I can see why you wouldn't want Baron off his leash! He's been busy!

Speaking of busy, Shadow and Solmyre were quite an active duo. They did a lot more killing than being killed - hats off to the two of you gentlemen!

Solmyre even had time to root around in my corpse... *ahem* Yes, even I manage to take that monochrome dirtnap now and then! *mutters*

Poor wildx. Kudos on the well fought duel, despite the outcome. wildx gets this week's Keep on Truckin' award for not giving up or throwing in the towel despite getting the brunt of the brutal attacks from our various gatefighters... What did you do to everyone to rile em up like that, wildx??

    We've got a jumper!!

Zorro calls for a timeout, but a rat wasn't having any of that. That's alright, Zorro got his revenge in the end (with perhaps a bit of help)!

Ouch. No one likes a sore loser... It's Felucca - take your dirtnaps in stride or may all your hassle-free dreams come true on the other side of that moongate, my friend. Yes, you are in control of your destiny!

Remember, any of the color commentary above is just for kicks and may not accurately reflect the situation depicted in the screenshots... a grain of salt or spoonful of sugar may be required. See you next week everyone... and until then, smile when you take that gank at the gate! You just might be on Stratics Camera!

    FoF: Finally Friday

    February 1, 2008

"When using a bow with a damage type, like Silvani's Feywood Bow which has 100% energy damage, and a quiver that has other damage modifiers, like the Quiver of Fire which has 50% physical and 50% fire damage, which set of modifiers are used to determine damage?"

Leurocian checked this one out, and it turns out that the quiver damage type overrides the bow damage type (it only affects bows - it won't affect a melee weapon at all.)

So in this case, with the Quiver of Fire equipped, the bow will do 50% physical and 50% fire damage, and no energy damage at all.

    --

"What are the properties for the special wood types?"

Another one of those "it's about time!" updates - Here you go!

Also, just to clarify last weeks' update - the wood-based runic kits CAN stack properties - so if you're using a Runic Ash Saw, for example, it is possible to roll Luck twice at 50% intensity, bringing the total intensity for that property to 100% - well above the theoretical intensity maximum of 75% for an Ash Runic, and it will look like only one property was added, when an Ash should generate a minimum of two. If you're seeing fewer properties on your wooden items than you think you should have, this may well be what's happening.

(Also, the Runic Properties page now has the charges for all the runics, by request)

    --

    Playguide Update Roundup:

Quite a few Playguide pages have been updated in the last week - here's a selection of new facts, formulae, and pages of interest:

Evaluating Intelligence: Page now has the correct relationship between Eval Int and Magery damage (for you math fans, the actual formula used to generate those results is adjusted damage = (base damage * ( 30 + (9 * Eval Int/10) ) ) / 100.)

Resisting Spells: Lists the Spellweaving spells affected by Resisting Spells (Bushido, Ninjitsu, and Chivalry have no skills that are affected by Resist Spells.)

Special Moves: The Samurai Empire and Mondain's Legacy special moves have been added, and all moves have been updated with the weapons that use them.

Bonus! ML Dungeon Overview: I can't actually take credit for this one - I just found it, lost and lonely, on the internal web server

Crafting skills: Now list all the non-Heartwood-recipe craftable items with ingredients and skill needed, including the SE and ML ones.

All skills now have their primary and secondary stats listed. (Those are the stats that will be raised by using that skill.)

    --

"What, if any, is the effect of Spirit Speak on the amount of mana leeched when in wraith form?"

First, mana leeched in Wraith form will be between 5%-23% of the damage done to the target - with a minimum of 1 mana leeched and a maximum of the target's total mana.

With no Spirit Speak, the mana leeched will be 5% of the damage done (after resists) - so if you do 50 damage to your target while in Wraith form with no Spirit Speak, you'll leech 2.5 mana. At GM spirit speak, you will leech 20% of the damage done - in the above case, you'd leech 10 mana. Legendary gets you to 23%, which gives you a total of 11.5 mana leeched in the above case.

For the math fans, the formula is percent leeched = ((15 * Spirit Speak)/100) + 5

    --

"Do the damage modifiers on quivers come from the quiver you have equipped or the quiver the arrow or bolt came from? I equip the quiver of lightning but I have several other quivers for the weight reduction in my pack with bolts and arrows."

    Leurocian banged on this one:

"The answer appears to be that the damage type and bonus comes from the quiver you have equipped, even if it has 0 arrows or bolts.

Example: Let’s say a Quiver of Fire is in a character’s backpack. It delivers 50% physical / 50% fire damage. The archer has 100 arrows in this quiver. She also has a Quiver of Ice equipped with no arrows in it. It delivers 50% physical / 50% cold damage. The archer shoots arrows at a creature with 100% physical and 100% fire resist. The result: the creature takes 50% of the delivered damage as cold damage from the Quiver of Ice. The Quiver of Fire is ignored, even though the arrows are coming from it."

    MT Provokes The Seas!!

    MT’s Carnage at Sea!!

A note was left on my door on Saturday morning, inviting me to cover the biggest net toss this reporter has ever been.

We started in Skara Brae to build the forces to fight the fearsome water creatures

We then departed to Marble Island , home base of the Mage tower guild and launching point for this event.

Squiggy was in charge of this event and allowed me on the center boat for better pictures.

There were some very cleaverly named boats that were apart of great fleet.

Squiggy and I began tossing nets.

    And the carnage began!!

We then tempted fate by throwing over the mysterious Fabled White Fishing net.

This proved to be a bit of a mistake as more than one was thrown at the same time. This was too much for the fleet to handle and mass death insued.

After calling on the powers of self resurrection we slowly returned to life to complete the task of defeating the evil Leviathans.

    We triumphed!!

It was a lot of fun and I'd like to thank MT for inviting me to tag along and the priveldge of throwing out some of the chaos.

Bags of Sending Change: Atlantic weighs in!
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Friday, February 1, 2008, 5:14 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)

When the bags of sending came on the scene in Sosaria, many were thrilled. People could hunt, get resources and not have to keep running back and forth to the bank. In Felucca, it was a definite treat because you cannot recall out of the dungeons there. Of course with something that wonderful, there is always the select few that ruin it for the honest player, whether its dupers, scripters or anything else that tends to force change it still affects us all.

I waited and gave the change some time to see how players felt about them. Before I go into that, I feel I should include the reasoning behind the change:

"Why was the Bag of Sending nerfed?
The short answer is, to curb inflation. The longer answer involves some metaphors, so bear with me a moment.

UO's economy was designed on the "faucet/sink" model. Imagine a faucet that pours gold into the world. Now imagine various drains - "gold sinks" - that the gold flows away into. The goal of the system is for the level of gold in the world to remain approximately even, and that's done by adjusting the rate of the flow in and the size of the drains out.

In UO, the "faucets" are the various NPCs that give players gold - monsters you can loot, escorts or quests that give gold as a reward, etc. The drains are any NPC or system that takes gold away from players - the insurance system is a big one, as are player vendor fees. (Player-to-player trades are NOT sinks - moving the gold around within the world doesn't change the overall amount of money in it.)

The Bags of Sending were increasing the rate of flow of gold from monster loot - that faucet was pretty much cranked as wide as it would go. This has been overwhelming the drains and increasing the amount of money in the world, which lowers the actual value of gold - this is what economists mean by "inflation." Changing the Bags of Sending to make farming for gold less profitable will slow down that flow and hopefully slow down the rate of inflation - which will raise prices in the short run but lower them substantially in the long run, as the drains pull money out of the world and the actual value of gold goes up.

Now, MMO economics are far from an exact science, and the system will no doubt require further tweaking, but this is a step in the right direction."

    -Jeremy

Keeping that in mind and the fact that now a bag of sending uses one charger per hundred stones, the reaction of the majority so far was not very happy. Some people wonder, well why do they make these changes without asking how people would feel first or even give a warning that it is coming. Some have said its change first, explain later. I cannot speak for EA or the minds of their developers that felt this would help the in game economy. I can be the voice of those who feel that in spite of the intent to "fix" things, the change did not do anything other that hurt honest players.

I posed this question: Now that the bag of sending changes have been implemented for a while, how do you feel about the change? I did not receive a single positive response. Here are some of the replies:

"But as for bags of sending, you touched on something I didn't- It harms legit players more than it fixes gold farmers simply because it removes choice from where casual players can go hunt. While some might think "Well how did you survive before bags of sending? It's not any different now", it's not a fair comparison because in the old days we could recall in and out of Feluccan dungeons."
    -Norture

"New changes absolutely suck for the legit player. It makes anyone who hunts in Fel (like i used to) completely mad... I spend the effort to run my tamer all the WAY down to some hunting spot 3-4 levels deep in a dungeon and when I'm full I have to run all the way back out. (use powder to get my pet out with the summoning ball). I gave up on that."
    -Walter

"I would have to agree with the posts I've read so far. I'm not a 24/7 UO scripter that farms all the resources I can find. I do however like to go out and get what I need for crafting. I also farm gold but do it the legal way by actually playing the game. I used to farm in Fel dungeons to take advantage of the increase in gold and better chance for usable items. Now however without BoS (Bag of Sending) it isn't worth going to a Fel dungeon. I have to walk all the way in, farm for 5-10 minutes, walk all the way out, then recall to a bank. This greatly increases the chances of running into a red and losing all my hard earned loot. Not to mention making farming for crafting supplies just as useless.

I understand the need to do something about this gold stream. Why not make the BoS (bags of Sending) use more charges for gold or maybe not even for gold at all. This would enable recourses to be sent to a bank in good numbers but still slow a gold stream.

I feel the changes hurt the casual player more then the script player. A script player will just change their script and do something else. A casual player will move on to something else, or worse another game entirely.

Lastly I don't feel that hunting creatures for gold is a bad way to make a UO living. Some players just don't get into crafting or running vendors. You shouldn't be forced into doing this just to be able to play the game you love.

    Hope this helps."
    -GFY

"Even though I realize this was the attempt to get a handle on the scripters there, it has become incredibly inconvenient for those of us that were 'playing by the rules'. Training new players I would always equip them with a Bag of Sending. It was just better to not disturb a good momentum in training making a run to the bank, especially when most new players don't even understand when they become frozen, and too encumbered to move. Especially since this always seems to happen at the most inopportune time, cause you death, possibly loot, and the insurance costs on your things.

When on hunting parties or in the course of recourse collections, it was nice to send a hundred leathers or such to the bank when you found you were suddenly overweight. Just as moving to a new house, often it was a simple matter to send bulk items you may have accumulated to the bank, and move into your new how at your leaser.

I realize there are those out there that didn't utilize the BoS (Bag of Sending) in this manner, and many that really don't care about the changes at all. But as someone who find them very useful in training new players, I really think the changes are shameful. The new systems is actually punishing the innocent for the crimes of the scripters.

And hey, I realize there will be a lot of people that will disagree with my thoughts here, just my own observations. "
    -Grigg of Einhorn

From all the above responses, and these are just a handful, I hope in the future that changes like this may be avoided. So far, it appears the legit player was harmed more than the ones that milked the system as it were. This community has definitely spoken and obviously is not pleased with this change. I, personally am not happy with it either especially for resources as I have crafters. I also do not feel it helped the economy at all. However, my goal here was not to speak for myself, but for the community and be it's voice whether for, against or indifferent to this change.

    -Ishtar-

An Editorial on Griefing by Ishtar of Atlantic
Return to TopSubmit News! Comment on this article
Posted on Friday, February 1, 2008, 1:40 PM EST by El of LA (Editorials)

This editorial is written by Ishtar of Atlantic shard, a seasoned reporter with a roleplayer's eye on UO playstyles. Read her very interesting editorial below on the subject of Griefing.

Now all of us at one point or another have dealt with some form of griefing in one of its many ugly forms. With the large population, especially on a shard such as Atlantic, keeping it controlled is difficult. As time has gone on in game the scarcity of GM's had made this task even more difficult. How often does one get the typical automated response? This can be extremely frustrating when you add the long wait times into the equation. In the realm of Ultima Online I have found that griefing falls primarily into these categories:

    - What we know as exploits, bug exploitations and so on that constitutes as an abuse of the actual game mechanics.. -The intent of the action is meant to cause dissatisfaction of the game play of the intended victim, verbal (racial slurs and so forth) or physical (the luring of monster/releasing of pets with the intent of harming/killing of another player on the Trammel, Malas & Ilshenar facets).
-Impersonating of a guild/individual (this only applies to the roleplay community in my experience).
-The inability of the victim to exact some means of retribution beyond utilizing similar unintended game mechanics.*

Regardless of the type of game play you enjoy in UO, whether you just hunt, run peerless or role play, griefing tends to be the constant black spot in the game. In the roleplay community this can add more stress to a character or guilds interaction. From events being interrupted to more minor infractions, it still creates what one would call "drama" within the community. Griefing, can be viewed as a form of harassment in the physical sense as well as verbal. Though per game mechanics tossing insults is not considering griefing, as long as it is not racially charged or in a manner that violates the rules of conduct. Per the roleplay community to go out of character and simple curse at people, especially to bait a conflict, would be just that.

With the mechanics of warring and alliances, these action(s) do not just affect one individual, even if only one person is the intended target, but all the partis involved. These things are here for fun and enjoyment, and just one instance, even if just in a moment, it can be ruined for many. This is a nightmare to deal with for guild masters and those that are the victims of this action. Though many will say yes it is only a game, one must keep in mind that the person behind the player does have real feelings and those are still affected regardless.

In the role play community, the majority of responsible GM's will handle this in an adult and professional manner. Sometimes even in the non roleplay community a guild master will handle it in the same fashion. However, there are always exceptions to such and it tends to lead to a war of sorts within the either community. In my years of playing I personally have experienced quite a few of these, including guild impersonation, which too this day only one responsible party has atoned for. Though that guild was eventually disbanded, it still did not resolve the situation and resulted in long term animosity, which to this day I still harbor ill feelings about and has created conflict with a guild master I respect and still wish we could have a more amicable relationship.

Animosity, as the result of conflict stemmed from griefing in the roleplay community as well as those that are not, if left unchecked and without proper action, can lead to long time feuds that can have major impacts on relationships between guild and players down the road. For example, tit for tat actions, which I can admit I have been guilty of myself, resulted in a long term issues with another guild. Even though after time I realized it served no purpose and it was better to go along my merry way then keep going back and forth, as on my end it appeared resolved after a talking it out, thill has created a rift with both guilds.

It may appear a simple solution would fix such an issue, but add stubbornness and strong personalities and that can go right out the window. I have seen a sincere apology fix many situations, yet sometimes getting one would be like pulling teeth from a shark's mouth. The role play community has an advantage with mediators available to resolve conflicts and disputes, which is a resource rarely used and tends to be overlooked as a positive option. Now, with that in mind, you would think the option would be used more often, sadly it is not.

So how does one handle such rude interruptions of their game play? Well there are numerous trains of though in this regard from doing it back to just ignoring it. I recommend ignoring it and contacting the Guild master of the guild causing the issue. Doing it back has very bad results, that I can attest to from my own above admission. One can debate that ignoring such things could be considered the same as taking no action, but adding fuel to the fire so-to-speak, tends to lead to more issues down the line and makes it much harder to settle differences later on.

In some circumstances the Guild Master of the offending guild, may be the person creating the problem. In that case, the "ignore button" serves a wondrous purpose here. Though, it may not stop the other party from picking objects up and so forth it can filter any taunting behavior and commentary. Unfortunately, that is about all the game mechanics allow to stop this as the GM's of Electronic Arts have come short in this department when they removed a lot of their programs over the past few years.

To live grief free in Ultima Online would seem a near impossibility, but one has to make the most of their situation. The definition itself can be intangible at times, as what one may consider griefing may not be, for example removing rune stones and re-wording recruit books or throwing them away, by the rules set forth in the game are not considered griefing, but would walk a fine line in the role play community. The same would go for blocking common areas, not deemed griefing but rude, none the less.

So perhaps, with this perspective in mind, a clear definition should be made as what is griefing in the role play community vs. the non role play community. Though these are only my thoughts, experiences and opinions, hopefully it will shed new light on something that puts a dark cloud on the world of Ultima Online for all.
