Honoring Lord Clainin, The Royal Thaumaturgist of Britannia

My Lord,

I've departed the memorial to the Royal Thaumaturge. I must say, you were right about Saius. The kings mouthpiece proved to be both a passionate and eloquent orator, just as you said he would be. He is either a consummate thespian, or he dredged up some sincerity in the splendid display he gave for those gathered in memorium.

Casca was also no where to be found, just as you said.

It wanted to ensure that you knew what was said, so I hired a calligrapher to transcribe the words of the Lord Emissary.

Hail good citizens and loyal subjects. Your King and Lord Emissary thank you for attending.

The occasion we are gathered for today is a solemn one. For here we witness the final laying to rest of our beloved Lord Clainin. In respect of his memory, I will not recall the circumstances of his passing. And for those who witnessed it, I have already said much.

Still, I would say a little more.

In life, he was Clainin. A servant, a soldier, a scholar, and a follower of the virtues. Indeed, his deeds and his devotion are an example to us all. And it is my hope for all of those generations who come after, to not have to endure through such dark times, surrounded as we are in the tumult of strife and war. For how else can we measure the strength and cunning of our enemies, but for the amount of blood they spill?

Yet, still we know that Lord Clainin turns his watchful gaze upon us from a loftier place, and for one to say he is still among us would not be wrong.

Truely, he is amongst us more now than before. However in death, he is a reminder. A reminder of the power and reach our enemies wield. And for every moment we slow our vigilance, every moment we think we are the greater in this battle, is every moment we pay the toll in loves for our foolhardiness.

Brothers and sisters! This memorial is our reminder! That to our enemies in the darkness, we must be as the sword! Swift and sharp! To those spineless villains who in their cowardice, stole Clainin from us. We must be as the flood! Mighty and unstoppable! To these wretches, heartless and cruel, we must be as Death itself, cold and inevitable.

Stand there my friends. Stand and face this memorial, meager as it is. Stand in awe and reverance for this man, and indeed for all of those important to us who have passed alongside him. Those who we can feel and remember but never see again.

For those who wish to speak, now is the time. For I will say no more.



As per your request, I stepped forward and delivered one of the manors scarlet bloodroses to the pedistal beneath the wizards likeness. Lord, did you know the man?

I proceeded to work the crowd, gathering the identities of those in attendance and revealing your name to them. Jules Hexecott and Inquisitor Cicero, belonging to an Ordo of the Church of the Holy Light. A lady from the Kingdom of Dawn. WildStar, I believe? An eastern monk by the name of Xel. A strange man who claimed to be a rebel, named Zorax. A polite maiden by the name of Magdalena. A Lord Bacchus and Lady Halo. The patron god of drink and a woman called halo? Someone has a sense of humor. Also, there was a shrouded Ilythiiri in attendance. I'm sure you will share my suspicions.

I spoke with the man named Cicero, who revealed to me that he belonged to the Department of the Inquisition. Malleus Maleficarum, I believe he said? The Witches Hammer in the Old Tounge. A strange name.

I made sure to make your other name known to them, without revealing anything too important that could get back to Renard or Di Caela. They seem to hold an intense distrust of magic users, and mistaked my ceremonial stave for a rod of sorcery. Considering their superstitions, it was rather odd to watch them kneel before the grave of the deceased magus.



Nevertheless, they were amicable enough once I revealed that I was not a competend magic user, and feigned an interest in Luna.





Vayne tells me that they have reserved a stall at the upcoming Bazaar. I intend to learn more about them.



Hexecott revealed to me that the first woman to leave was "the Witch of the Kingdom of Dawn." They also revealed, with some level of disgust, that she was a traitor to Britannia. I was not aware that citizens of the Republic had now aligned themselves with Britannia? Was this Duchess, the Hayloh that you were speaking of? Should I seek an audience?

Our conversation was cut short, when Saius asked to speak with Cicero. I took the opportunity to depart. I'm being watched, although I have no inking as to who might be responsible. We've only just revealed ourselves again, my lord.

Uniform Design Contest Winners

Congratulations to Lady Pandora and Fern Goodfellow for winning the uniform design contest. It was a close race with the winner separated from a three way tie for a second place by a single vote.

As the winning team, they are required to supply the uniforms for the current and future recruits of the Town Guards.

A plaque will be raised at the Shard Museum to commemorate the contest.

I would like to thank everyone who participated to make this a very fun contest. Thank you for your hard work.

A Guide to the Town Guard Rank Structure

This is first in a series of articles that will iron out the details regarding the town guards. Please take a look at the FAQ Section of the website for more information.

Ranks

Recruit

The recruit is the rank given to all trainee town guards! Bottom of the barrel, if you may. As a recruit, you will not only be expected to follow the commands of your superior but often also the whims of insufferable superiors. When asked to identify yourself, you will add the recruit rank before your name. A recruit is expected to perform all the duties of a town guard without the authority of actually being one.

To progress, you must show initiative. Upon the discretion of your superior and only after two weeks of recruit duty, you will be allowed to participate in a series of tests known as Standard Recruit Test (S.R.T.). Your performance in these tests will decide your future with the town guard.

Uniform: The recruit will wear the standard town guard uniform.

Town Guard

Upon successful completion of the S.R.T., the recruit will achieve the rank of the town guard. This is the most commonly seen rank, besides a recruit. At this rank you represent your garrison and your commander. You may also give out orders to the ones ranked below you. As a town guard, you are enthusiastic about maintaining the peace in the town and are quick to step in when needed. You are town’s first line of defence and as such are expected to defend it till help arrives. A town guard is assigned to a garrison of a particular town.

Although not directly related, a town guard is generally accepted to be of a lower rank than a Royal Britannian Guard.

Uniform: The recruit will wear the standard town guard uniform.

Corporal

This is a special rank that is earned by those who have shown exceptional qualities as a town guard. A corporal is respected amongst the regiment and is considered to be a junior officer. Besides the normal duty of a town guard, a corporal takes on additional duties such as recruitment to the town guards and overseeing the logistics of running a garrison. A corporal is assigned to a particular town, but it is not uncommon for them to visit other cities.

Although not directly related, a corporal of the town guard is considered to be of equal or slightly higher rank than a Royal Britannian Guard.

Uniform: The corporal will wear the standard town guard uniform but with a deep blue sash and cloak.

Sergeant

The sergeant is a ranking officer of the town guard who is a veteran town guard or corporal that has shown leadership qualities. As a sergeant, you report directly to the captain of the town guard. The sergeant also acts as a leader of a garrison.

Captain

The captain of the town guard is the highest rank that can be achieved in the town guard without needing the appointment from the Royal Britannian Guard. A captain is a veteran officer who has won the respect of the town guard by showing exceptional courage and leadership in the past. He or she is considered reliable beyond a shadow of the doubt and is passionate about his duties.

The captain of the town guard reports directly to the commander.

Commander

Commander is the highest ranking officer of the town guard. There may only be one commander of the town guard at a given time. Above all other functions, the commander acts as a liaison with the hierarchy of the Royal Britannian Guards and also the political class. The commander of the town guard reports directly to the captain of the Royal Britannian Guard and also has the ears of the ruling council. This position is filled by the decree of the Royal Britanian Guard.

The current commander of the town guard, Aino Nystad, is also the captain of the Royal Britannian Guard.

Meet Your Event Moderator: Autolycus of Lake Superior

Your name is unusual. How did you choose it and what does it mean?

Autolycus is the Prince of Thieves, son of Hermes, in ancient Greek mythology. Since I first started UO, playing a thief always seemed the most attractive. Autolycus also taught Herecles (Hercules) wrestling. It just so happens all my thieves have had wrestling on their template.

How long have you played UO?

I can't tell anymore. One of my accounts reads 122 months in age, but I had to cancel it several times for months on end. *cough* Age of Shadows *cough*

Do you play regularly and how much, etc?

I try to get on both my EM-toon and my play account daily. Sometimes it's for a quick twenty minutes at Yew gate, thieving, or for hours defending and raiding faction bases.

Do you have a favorite play style? ie, pvp, pvm, etc?

PvP by a longshot. I enjoyed PvM during the pre-AoS days, when a couple drakes could send you packing...but since monsters were dumbed down and gold became worthless, I turned to 100% PvP.

Why did you want to be an EM?

Several reasons, really. The idea of contributing to the fiction of Ultima Online being my main reason for applying. I also felt that Fel, factions, and PvP thieves (three things I felt were often overlooked by...well...everyone) needed some representation.

What has been the best part and the worst part?

Working with the players has been the best part of being an Event Moderator. I've had the oppurtunity to plan and work next to some truly amazing people in this game, as we attempt to make their shard more fun for the masses. The worst part...I couldn't think of any aspect of being an EM that I'd want to cast in a negative connotation. It's all been great.

What would you like to change as far as your duties or abilities as an EM?

When it comes to our in-game duties and abilities, I think we're all set. I'd love to get the chance to write more fiction, as well as revive the BNN to coincide with events.

How has it been, working closely with EA staff?

Excellent. The dev holding our leash, Mesanna, is just great. She works so hard to make sure we have everything we need to do our job. She stayed up with EM Quantum and I right up until 2am on Christmas, helping us. She leaves work, gets home, and hops right on her personal computer to continue working! I can't even imagine what it must be like to have chatroom full of 20 EMs at a time clammering for her attention.

Do you feel the EA staff has an eye to what UO players really want?

Yes. However, there are just so many different interests in UO...which is what makes the game great! This, in my opinion, creates a sort of "balance" with the players. Make 1,000 players happy, and you make 1,000 other players angry. No change will ever be universally accepted by the playerbase, especially those of us living in Felluca. The developers, as well as the EM team, all keep an eye open to what the players are saying.

What do you see for the future of EMs?

Fun! We've just got started, folks. The events are only going to get more fantastic.

What do you see for the future of UO?

It's a cycle. Who knows what crazy templates we will be seeing on the battle field with the coming changes.

If you could change 1 thing in UO, what would it be?

Now that is a terribly hard question! Hah. I'd love to say "balanced PvP" as an answer, but that just isn't fair. That, and I dont think all templates should be equal. I guess I'd like to see less item dependence. Mage weapons replace an entire skill. A combination of enchanted apples and "pop boxes" also replaces a skill fairly well, though not entirely. Casual players that don't wish to purchase gold from illegal brokers with real cash just can't compete with the players that can PvM and do champ spawns for hours upon hours on end. More and more powerful items get released every year, and it only further widens this gap.

Faction arties were nice in the way they offset this a bit, but that system isn't fair to the factioners that actually defend and raid, going to work without sleep because they ensured their faction's success the night before. Some of these people have been working hard for their faction for years, only to have these "posers" farming their silver and mooching off their system.

With that said, let me rephrase my entire answer and add a second change. Less item dependence, and faction fighting extended to all facets. Afterall, it isn't non-consentual PvP when you have to click "Join" on a signup stone first.

Have you enjoyed being an EM?

It's been great.

As players, what can we do to help EMs?

Think! Really, just toss ideas at us. Almost nothing is off-limits. If you can imagine it, we might be able to work it. What better way to please a playerbase than giving them something they actually asked for.

How can we best communicate our needs/wants to EMs and EA Staff?

Many EMs have set up e-mail accounts and websites to communicate with their players. But if it comes down to it, post a rant on your shard's forum through Stratics. Trust me, the EA Staff as well as the EM team scour these forums. I've seen the ways a single post on stratics has swayed the decision to make changes to an upcoming publish, or EM event, and it is amazing.

With that EM Autolycus sped away to attend the Regatta on Lake Superior....

I popped into the Counselor's Guild today to see how the Meet and Greet was progressing and it was a hotbed of ideas!



Malachi and latu had a full house and many of the well known Great Lakes players attended such as Shady the GM of Dragon Clan Guild, Lord Moose and Aridas of FCB, Melian of MOA, Lord Malag Aste, Lady Nightly Spirit, Anok Libertine of CFC and very late arrival Poison Ivy with her very bright golden hair blowing in the wind as she entered in a rush.

Many great ideas were presented to the EMs from Ore Events, Crafter Events, more boat races, possibly finding the old fiction gem mine in Magincia to the lag present for many during a spawn related event. Several attendees were asking for more information on the EM website.

At one point I asked that all give warm greetings to the Great Lakes EMs so I could take a screenshot which they did. In return the EMs both commented that "Great Lakes People Rock".



Though I did not step up to receive a EM named sash most people did. Thank you latu and Malachi for your time and everything you do for Great Lakes.

FoF: Summer is Around the Corner

Will we be seeing the "mark" spell added to any other magic schools other than magery? Currently chivalry can recall, but not mark a rune. It doesn't make too much sense for this to be a missing an integral part of this utility spell's process. I can understand however keeping gate as a defining power of magery, but keeping a skill that can recall unable to mark its own runes is a bit odd to me. Necromancy, Spellweaving, and Mysticism are all without and travel utility. Any love for them?

Non-mages are able to mark and recall using scrolls, which is a reasonable trade off. However, even with scrolls the intelligence and skill requirements may be a little high for certain classes. We could make a little adjustment so this method can be more viable for non-mages.

Will there ever be a change or fix with the zoo turn-in and point system? The current system is too limited and there are a ton of tameables, yet the field of what the zoo will accept and the points for the animals are limited and make it almost not warrant an effort to try.

It is part of our future plans to improve the community collections, and especially the zoo, including as far as tameables that can be turned in as well as incentives to do so.

Will there ever be a way for reds to be protected at a spawn to get extra scrolls?

Not likely. Protection is a “reward” for those who observe the Virtue system. Sadly, murderers do not exactly qualify as virtuous.

Is the Fey Slayer (Pixie Swatter) intended to be a slayer for the cu sidhe?

Yes. The Cu Sidhe is a Fey creature, so the Pixie Swatter is intended to be a slayer for it.

You guys covered the quivers that were "bugged" a couple FoF ago but what's the deal with the Quivers of Rage?

There was an issue which allowed some quivers of rage to have higher than intended damage modifiers. While the majority of those have been fixed, there still is a few of them out there with irregular mods. Players should not be purchasing these items. A fix has been written that will reset the existing bugged quivers to the normal damage mods and will be released in the near future.

Tomas Savos, Captain of the Royal Guard, recently revealed the location of a new base of operations and training which was commissioned for the Volunteer Royal Guard. The base is presently under construction in the mountains southwest of the city of Yew. (13o 17'N 67o 13'W) The Dungeon of Shame and the Blighted Grove lie to the south.

Captain Savos said, "The Lords and Ladies of the cities we were prospectively considering, Trinsic, Serpent's Hold, and Vesper, did not wish to contend with a new training facility. This mountainous location provides us with a large defensible area."

Currently, only a few palisades have been built in the narrow canyon which bisects the northern tip of the mountain range. Large boulders have been placed around the edges of the ravine to protect the area from landslides. A spacious cave has been included as part of the base, and will no doubt be a rich source of metal for the all-volunteer force.

Upon learning of the base, Chancellor DaKaren of the High Council of Britannia commented, "The High Council is pleased to learn that the Royal Guard has built a new base so close to the Council seat in Compassion Grove. This will make it very convenient for the Britannian Armed Forces to lend their aid."

The base is expected to continue to develop over the coming weeks, and its official opening will be announced by Captain Savos.

Inflation......it is all around us. One does not need to go further than the Luna City vendors to experience it, that is not to say it is not wide spread. Go to almost any vendor shop, any location in the realm and it is hard not to notice the high price of things. Auction houses are also a place to see the money that is flowing these days.
MOA this week sold its highest item ever at 113 million for one item. I must add, for a collector the covered chair was a dream come true.



On a different type of community issue EM Malachi will be holding
a Meet & Greet this Saturday (April 25th) from 12-2 PM CST at the West Britain Counselor's Hall.
You don’t want to miss it!



For all you vet players out there there is no need to introduce Jamba Juice. Jamba has been around for years running one of the most beautiful vendor shops back in the day. She has retired from commerce for a few years now but still shows her design talents in decor. She has just finished her newest adventure at 65o 23'S, 27o 33'W.



The design is very old school , very Jamba Juice right down to the signature J.J. initials made with yarn. I will not show too many screenshots of this plot in hopes you take the time to visit the creative spirit of this person.

EM Tashik has built a lovely Rewards Hall for Legends in the wilds of Malas. To get there on foot take the southern
exit from the town of Luna and keep going south, across three bridges, until you can go no further.

An easier way to get there is to step into the Death Vortex just outside the Counselor's Hall near the entrance to Blackthorn's Castle, and you will be instantly transported to the Rewards Hall.

Sextant coordinates are 29^o17'N, 47^o 27'W

(your reporter had some small difficulty with a lizardman... she countered his attack with a sewing kit and an ornate axe)

The Rewards Hall is well constructed with ample room for both wall plaques and statues.

There is, however, a noticeable lack of flora which will, hopefully, be remedied soon. Or, perhaps there is a plan for Award Floral Arrangements, in addition to Award Plaques and Award Statues?

There is even a large pond.... maybe some Award Sailing Vessels for a naval event?

I look forward to reporting the many events that will fill this hall with names of Legends!

The new EM Event Reward Museum on Drachenfels is located in Malas, on the Crumbling Mountain part (the land between Luna and Umbra) and the central west-most Island of it. You can find a rune in front of the Councelor's Guild hall in Britain (Trammel). The museum already contains the first event rewards from the past events, honoring winning players or teams. There also is a wooden box on the entrance stairs where you can drop your ingame books with your own stories. They will be placed in the library which will be built in the coming days and weeks. * Das neue EM Event Reward Museum auf Drachenfels liegt in Malas, auf dem Crumbling Mountain Teil (das ist das Land zwischen Luna und Umbra) und dort auf der westlichsten zentralen Insel. Eine direkte Rune dazu findet man vor den Türen der Councelor's Gilde in Britain (Trammel). Das Museum hat bereits die ersten Belohnungen der vergangenen Events ausgestellt, die die erfolgreichen Spieler oder Teams honorieren. Gleichzeitig gibt es auf der Treppe des Eingangs eine Holzkiste wo man eigene geschriebene Literatur (in Buchform) hineinlegen kann. Diese werden in die Bibliothek aufgenommen, die in den kommenden Tagen und Wochen aufgebaut wird.

The newest addition to EM events is an "EM Event Announcer", a newly invented Towncrier. The only one (until today) is located near the Luna Bank/Shops, right at the entrance to the building. A book right beside her feet tell bypassers how you deal with her. Simply say news to Brittany (that's her name) as your accustomed to like all other Towncriers. She will tell you news if she has any, otherwise she asks to visit her soon again. * Die neueste Zugabe zu den EM Events ist ein "EM Event Marktschreier", ein neuartiger Stadtschreier. Der einzige (bisher) steht in der Nähe der Luna Bank/Shops, gleich beim Eingang zum Gebäude. Ein Buch zu ihren Füssen erklärt den Vorbeikommenden wie man mit ihr kommunizieren kann. Es genügt vorerst einfach news zu Brittany (das ist ihr Name) zu sagen, wie das bei den üblichen Stadtschreiern auch gebräuchlich ist. Wenn sie News hat, wird sie es euch sagen, ansonsten bittet sie euch, bald wieder vorbeizuschauen.

April Fool's Day ~ 1. April (1st of April, 2009) The people had to go on a quest where several clues finally led back to the Councelor's Guildhall in Britain. Die Leute konnten ein Quest mit diversen Hinweisen absolvieren, schlussendlich landeten sie dann wieder in der Councelor's Gilde in Britain.

LUDO Game Day ~MÄDNess (2nd of April, 2009) EM Immortal arranged a game party playing on a life-sized field LUDO with the people. EM Immortal arrangierte ein MÄDNess (Mensch ärgere dich nicht) Spiel für die Leute auf einem lebensgrossen Spielfeld.

Easter Event ~ Ostern (12th of April, 2009) A quest to help the children of Sosaria because the easter bunny made a mistake - several eggs (around 300) were found among Felucca and Trammel. Ein Quest um den Kindern von Sosaria zu helfen, weil der Osterhase einen Fehler gemacht hatte - diverse Eier (um die 300) wurden auf Felucca und Trammel gefunden.

Pirate Day ~Piratentag (20th of April, 2009) The attending crowd was tested to become "real" pirates, several teams were formed and a sextant quest had to be done. Afterwards a real pirate drinking party with some pirate folk songs followed. Die Anwesenden wurden auf ihre "Piratentauglichkeit" geprüft, Teams wurden gebildet und ein Sextanten-Quest absolviert. Danach gabs eine richtige Piraten-Party mit vielen Drinks und Piratenliedern.

There where even more events (a PvP-Tournament and two Meet & Greet with the EM's) but I didn't manage to attend. But there will be more events soon!
Es gab noch ein paar Events mehr (ein PvP-Turnier und zwei Meet & Greet mit den EM's) aber ich war da leider verhindert. Aber sicher werden bald weitere Events auf uns warten!

What's your favorite part of being the UO Community Coordinator?

I love communicating with the player base. This goes all the way back when I first got into customer service. There’s a certain feeling you get when you help someone resolve an issue that they are facing.

Hello,

A general warning, the stall registration for the festival has been extremely lukewarm. Third day into the registration phase with quite a few hours spent in Luna advertising the festival has led to only 1 reservation so far.

Perhaps, I misread the demand for another festival and it is too soon? Ideally, we should have a healthy mix of people hosting games, information booths, and also merchants hawking everything from low end to high end items. If you are willing to spend hours spamming your items at Luna then why not take it to the bazaar once a month?

Quite honestly, I am not planning to spend hours at Luna spamming for reservations like last time. I was expecting there to be a higher interest but so far it has not been the case. If we do not get close to 25 stalls reserved by end of Friday, I fear I might have to cancel the festival.

Inside the Walls of Luna in the SE Corner

The Napa Valley Community Auction house is open for the use of any guild or person wishing to hold an auction.

The site rental fee is only 10% of the proceeds of your Auction. You will be Co-owned to the house 2 days prior to your auction date and must be out by 5pm the day following your auction.

The intent is to provide an excellent facility for the use of the players of Napa. Reservations are on a first come first serve basis. Regularly scheduled auction events will have priority.

Well we all love a good auction, now we all have a place to use here inside the walls of Luna so let get them up and running. :-)

The Royal Guard Conference kicked off without a hitch today but before the nice event there was of course a little fun to be had!

People started to arrive early and one of them was Baja's very own reporter Oriana! Who was greeted by The cabal of daggers, The Sphinx! Who of course was oogling over Ori's ears! But Ori shot back!

And just above that we had Fern passing out candals in rememberance of the Royal Guard Kemer, who passed away just a few weeks ago.

And so just as some of us were having fun and me finding things people had...er..."dropped"...*looks around innocently* Lady Aino finally appeared!

And with that just about everyone in who attended the meeting stood in line as Brackus (a town guard) had us write our names in a book. There was of course more fooling around and I had noticed that the people that attended were very carefree with their items which caused me to pick them up for them!

Sadly everyone thought Shae was stealing! Who would have thought returning stol....er...dropped goods was stealing?! Even Lady Aino was dropping things!

You are involved with Holy Light Auctions. Can you tell us a little about your association with this auction house.

Absolutely! I was a former member of an auction house named Spirits Of Wisdom. AKA SOW. Wonderful members and a great auction house. I was with them for about three years. Matrix the auctioneer took a very long break and has not returned. I have asked to take on the SOW name and bring the auction house back to life. Unfortunately I was unable to contact Matrix. I then decided to open my own auction house! With the help of Pure Luck, Deildren and Alina we joined together and made what it is today. Also with the help of some new members Chylde, Tad and Maelmordha I could have not done it without any of them! Love you guys!


When not involved with the auction how does Vixen spend her time?
I spend my time shopping for great deals, looking for rare items, do a bunch of champ spawns and spend time with other wonderful guilds on Great Lakes (DC*) to mention one of my favorites!

Will Imbuing require the other crafting skills like smithing or tailoring to unravel/imbue items? 

Imbuing will not require any other skill to imbue items crafted or found in the world. However, you will need other crafting skills in order to create the items to imbue.

In KR I accidentally moved my backpack off of the game screen and its saved that spot as the place to open it so I can't use it normally anymore. What’s the best way to fix this?

The safest way to fix this would be to delete the settings folder: “My DocumentsEA GamesUltima Online”.  Note: this will cause you to lose all of your user settings including hotbars and macros.

There is another way which requires a basic understanding the xml data format which could save you from losing all of your settings.  First, make a copy of the settings folder so you can restore it if you make a mistake.  Look for the character specific settings file, open it in notepad, and remove the entire WindowSettings xml node.  

This bug will be fixed in the UOSA client when it launches sometime this year.

Are Gargoyle slayer weapons going to be useful against Gargoyles in PvP? 

The slayer weapons will continue to affect Gargoyle monsters as intended but will not affect players.

How do carpenters turn logs into boards?  

Carpenters perform this the same was as the lumberjack, use an axe on the logs to make boards due to the fact they were removed from the carpentry gump.

Thursday, April 23rd - Symposium on the Virtues of Sosaria (EM Event) - at 5 pm Pacific (7pm CT ^ 8pm ET) join Brianna the Storyteller as she continues to share how the virtues came to be in our lands and how they affect our day to day 'lives'. Well we do now! We have a Facebook page and a Twitter feed. 

Our initial Twitter account will be providing headlines and news items from our UO Herald, later we will be providing twitter feeds for some of our developers and producers.  Our Facebook page will aggregate this data as well as make use of the bells and whistles that Facebook offers, such as the event schedule and photo album.

While these pages will generally “mirror” information off of the UO Herald, Twitter and Facebook will give us the opportunity to provide additional information that is more suitable to those audiences and technologies.

Esther Bunny was worried that the Easter Bunny might not make an appearance this year. How disappointed the citizens of Britannia would be! That definitely could not be allowed to happen. So she decided to institute Plan B.

She spent long hours toiling over her bunny stove, making the fine chocolates and tasty spring cakes. She also borrowed a few eggs from the local chickens and dyed them in vibrant colors. (It was a very busy time for Esther, so she may have forgotten to mention this to the chickens.) On Easter, she gathered up her treats and spread them around the cities.

Now fortunately for Britannians, but ultimately unfortunate for Esther, the Easter Bunny made an appearance at the same time. Unbeknownst to Esther, the Easter Bunny had a standing agreement with the chickens to borrow eggs. This resulted in too many eggs being borrowed from the chickens this year.

The chickens became very angry. Their spokeshen, Cindy Little (of distant relation to the famous Chicken Little), demanded the eggs be returned. But little Esther no longer had the eggs! She had spread them around for everyone’s delight.

The ruthless chickens did not care. A stealthy team bunnynapped Esther and they are now holding her ransom for 2,000 eggs (the amount they approximate was borrowed). They are promising to harm Esther (possibly by turning her into bunny soup) if they do not receive the eggs.

A small group is planning to mount a rescue on Saturday, April 16, at 1pm PST. Will the citizens come to aid in the rescue? Or will they defend the chickens? Who is really the victim - Esther or the chickens?

[Everyone is welcome to participate on the side of their choosing. You will need to temporarily join a guild. Only attacks between pets will be allowed and attacks against either Cindy Little or Esther Bunny. Attacks on players will result in your removal from the event.]

Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

A conference is to be held on the subject of the Royal Guards of Britannia this coming Saturday at the Skara Brae Faire Grounds.

The keynote address will be given by Aino Nystad, Captain of the Royal Guard. Furthermore, there is an open call for speakers, current guards or otherwise, who are interested in giving a brief talk on matters related to the Royal Guards. In order to do so please submit your name and the title of your talk - selection will be made based on merit of the topic in the context of this conference.

There will also be an open discussion regarding the recruitment policy of the Royal guards. The goal is to make the entire process transparent and accessible to the common folks.

Crafter Event: Decorate the Reward Hall

For the crafter event, visit the new Great Lakes Reward Hall and Museum. To get to it, use the vortex in front of the West Britain Counselor’s Hall to teleport to it. The hall has six exhibit rooms (Hall of Heroes, Hall of Explorers, Hall of Jesters, Hall of Scholars, Hall of History, and Special Exhibits). Those who wish to take part should email "emmalachi at gmail.com" a picture with how they would decorate the room by Friday April 17, 2009 at midnight CST. Winning players will have their design displayed in the room and have their name displayed as the donator.

Rules and FAQ:

1. Please use mostly player crafted items. We do not want to take your rare items from you.

2. You may change the tiles and design features of the room if you wish, though please do not change the building too drastically.

3. NPCs and Engraved items may used. There will likely be NPC tour guides for the rooms, so feel free to dress them.

4. We reserve the right to modify winning entries to follow other rules we may need to follow.

5. Please make each room design appropriate for the name of the hall being decorated.

6. For taking pictures, mockups can be done on Test Center or photo-editing may be done. Smaller picture formats preferred.

7. Feel free to email us questions.

Somber citizens gathered at the Northern Britain Counselor's Hall awaiting the arrival of Tomas Savos, the Captain of the Royal Guard. I joined the party attending from the High Council, Chancellor DaKaren, Minister Malag-aste, Dot Warner, and Setatabon.

When Lord Savos arrived, he opened a gate to the throne room of Castle British and bade us enter. Minutes later he informed us that Lord Casca would arrive shortly. As if on cue, Lord Casca appeared from behind the curtains to the left of the throne and strode to the center of the dais to address the mourners.

Noding solemnly to the crowd, he began to speak:

The gathered crowd lowered their heads in silent respect for the fallen Royal Thaumaturgist. Eventually, Lord Casca asked if there were any who wished to speak. Strangely, the Chancellor remained silent eliciting a few quizzical glances from his companions.

One citizen did ask when 'revenge' would be sought for the murder; however, the question was ignored by the King Pro-tempore in favor of continuing the service.

Stepping down into the crowd, Lord Casca began to speak again. "To make this harder, we do not have a body to lay to rest, but we have set up a small memorial for him in these castle walls. Let us walk there now to show our respect." He led the assemblage through the orchard to a quiet spot just east of the castle smithy where a small cenotaph had been erected.

Placing a spellbook on the ground, Lord Casca invited others to place flowers or messages around the monument. He then commented that he wished to see the machine built by Nystul and Clainin, and led the group to the opposite side of the castle grounds.

At the machine, he commented on the works of great minds and lamented their loss. By this time, the mood of the crowd had changed slightly and people openly questioned the King Pro-tempore on the subject of Clainin's murder.

I felt the need to question why the Royal Thaumaturgist had been sent to Felucca so soon after his revival. The response was not what I had expected. According to Lord Casca, "That decision was made by a minor official and is being looked into. The information was kept very secret to avoid just this problem. However it seems that we have possible breaches in our security, maybe even traitors. I can't talk more since it concerns an active investigation."

This information immediately set the crowd against Lord Casca, the most outspoken in the crowd being Dot Warner the merchant, adoptive daughter of Chancellor DaKaren. "How could your administration fob off such an important figure to such an obviously deficient subordinate? Are you that lazy, or just expect us to be incredibly daft?" She then likened the King to a weasel and called the active investigation 'active stupidity'. The crowed seemed to agree with her, except for the unusually pale Chancellor who wished she would be more diplomatic.

Lord Savos tried to calm the crowd, informing them that it was not wise to verbally accost the King in front of the Captain of the Royal Guard. Taken aback, Lord Casca quickly retreated into an abruptly cast moongate

Lord Grey arrived shortly thereafter and led those who remained at the castle to the Cat's Lair Tavern for a wake. There the drinks flowed freely and people talked long into the night. A fine memorial indeed, but we are still left with the same niggling question... Why?

I'm opening the first Ultima Online Haunted Maze on Atlantic in hopes to give UO more of a spin on some new things and new games coming in the future. The maze opens this Friday April 17th 2009 at 8:00pm eastern. Its located on umbra road going west. Its just north of the ascension pvm house and right below Atlantic outlet malls. I would like UO to please focus on posting these events, and posting pictures of the events to try to advertise more UO. To get more folks in game to have some fun. I would really like to see a GM or EM to come to the event and give some support to the players of UO.

Its a very hard maze and not easy so def worth coming to come take a look. Every month I will make a new design and lock it for the next grand opening but I will open each design after grand opening for a month to allow folks to bring there friends who missed it. I'm also planning to recruit, and open auction house and vendors up inside. Also got tons of new games coming UO has never seen. Please contact me.

The Monthly Atlantic Cheese Race!

Here's one for the months to come - each month we will be running a cheese race (crazy huh!) - the location is the Paddock just above the fair ground area outside West Brit - coordinates are (1310 1805). Inspired by an annual event held in the UK, whereby participants have to chase rolling wheels of cheese down a hill, participants will attempt to carry a weighted cheese with their name on from a start point to the finish. Every third Friday of the month starting with this Friday (April 17th), at 6pm EST, the Monthly Atlantic Cheese Race will be held at the paddock between the blacksmiths and the stables to the west of Britain. The race consists of several elimination rounds and then a final round. In each race, up to 6 participants will race and have their own cheese, which they must drag from the starting point to the end. The first person to get to the end, wins the round. The winner from each round will go through to the finals, although if there is huge interest, further elimination rounds will be implemented. The winner of the finals will have their name added to a cheese and put into the reward house, in Malas. All winners cheeses will be displayed, however only the current winner will have their cheese on display. Please remember not to disrupt the event - if you don't like how the event is being run or held, you are more than welcome to voice your opinions here on stratics; but don't disrespect the other participants! If you want to take part or simply spectate, you are kindly asked to not go inside the pen area. The rules are stated in and outside of the race area, but for reference, here they are!

Aim
The aim of the race is to roll [drag and drop] the cheese from the start of the field to the end, once players have been told to start the race. The first person to the end wins that round. After each round, first and second places will be recorded. After the third player has got their cheese to the end of the track, the race will end within 5 seconds. Players in second place will only partake in the finals if there is a low turnout of participants –or– if first place does not attend the final (or has been disqualified, see “disqualification”) Winners from each round will compete in a final, where the winner’s name will be put on a cheese, to be displayed at the event hall (and on the field for a month)

Disqualification
Players will be disqualified from a race, or the finals, if:  

• They are observed to be running while holding a cheese
• They are found to disrupt the other contestants during a race (this includes spamming at the bottom of the screen)
• They are found to have taken or dragged a cheese, either their own or that of another contestant, outside the designated race track while any race is in progress
• Abusive, vulgar or hateful behavior toward other players or the cheesemaker!
• Please note that disruptive behavior, even from non-participants, will not be tolerated. So don't do it!
  
  Finally, please bear in mind that this race is the opening race, meaning that things may well not go exactly as planned. All that we ask is that you bear with us and try not to be disruptive or abusive. Remember, this is monthly, so if you can't make it, you can always try next month!

1). Did you think years ago, that you'd have gone this far, with this much support for so many games?

No, definitely not. At first I thought I thought I was just practicing my HTML. :)

2) Are you yourself a gamer? If so, which games do you actively play? If not, why did you stop?

Of course I am a gamer: that's how Stratics started! I'd loved the original Diablo and thought Ultima Online would be a continuation and growth upon a lovely social concept as it relates to online gameplay. Not to say the two are very much, if it all, the same, but I do believe they follow one another in terms of a lineage, or succession, of a persistent social environment geared around a fantasy setting. I was a fan and then player of UO far before its release, and decided there was a gap that needed filling. I did this for the sheer joy of the game.

Currently I stick primarily to console gaming: from the Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360 I am a console devotee. I am very disappointed in the current state of Massively Multiplayer games. The rest of this interview can be found here.

Cear Dallben sat as he almost always does, within the confines of his laboratory. He was wondering of this King Casca madness.
He had been reading a copy of the Royal Decree he stole from Skara Brae's bank wall. There were two lines that Dallben was certian,
needed elaboration.

I, thy narrator, will explain.
Line five, the decree states:  as King pro-tempore
That alone is interesting to Dallben. Who would self proclaim themselves
as a temporary King? Does he know his days are numbered? If so,
Who numbered them?

Line Eight, the decree states: our once and future king.
To imply that Lord British will return and rule Britannia once again
surely cannot simply be alluded to! Can it?

What does this elf king know?
What exactly is going on behind those curtains in castle British?
Surely if someone worthy of assassinating were to come around.
Cear should know...

After a short visit to Castle Blackthorn, what could be considered kidnapping,
and forced ingestion of an odd concoction, Dallben extracted what he considered
to be most valuable information.

Casca has been playing chess with a stranger who sends his moves
by messenger bird!

There are countless tales of British's chess habits.
Games between the old king and his friend and adversary Blackthorn
were rumored to go on for years.
Will Britannia see its founder again?
Or will chaos and entropy sink its fangs into the realm,

Devolving the world back to Akalabeth.

I tuned into Whispering Rose Radio for the second time ever as Deal or No Deal was being played on Great Lakes April 11th.

Torches and barrels led the path from Luna City to the plot where the event would take place and I just followed the way.



I was new to this game and the lovely Phoenix showed me the ropes.
She was most helpful.



Norman Bates was the Banker, Vana Mana Rose, known as the " princess of all shards " assisted the master of ceremonies Howie SandManDel.



My favorite part of this event was the " curley shuffle ". Everyone got into the gaming area and danced to the music. If you were tuned into the radio during the event it was extremely entertaining. What a way to start an event.



After that it was the Deal or No Deal game and if you were not picked to play the game it would not hold your attention long unless you were a die hard fan. They did give door prizes out during the game which was very nice and may have kept a few players lingering.

Skylla of Napa and four others, Manny Rat, Mad Mike, Merlock Jr. and Ice Man were picked to play. None of them were from Great Lakes sad to say.

It was a well run event and I think it is great that it is shard wide, just not my personal cup of tea.

Easter Sunday was the Brit Egg Hunt which was well attended.
It has been many months since I have seen that many people in Brit.
From one end of the city to the other people were riding and running at a fast pace as the easter bunnies pooped out colored eggs.



I found a total of 12 eggs in 5 different colors. I gave 6 away and kept the rest. Each egg is printed with the text , " Great Lakes 2009 Easter Egg ".

Nice EM event, easy, fast and anyone could join in. If you missed out eggs were selling at the bank for 3 million gold each or at Luna vendors for 750k each. THOSE ARE SOME PRICEY EGGS !!!!!

There was much talk about this event getting players back to the Brit Bank to stay. The sitters hung on for a few hours and it was business as usual back in the center of Luna.

Two upstanding citizens responsible for reclaiming Lord Casca's lost dog!

During routine patrols Friday evening outside the west Bank of Britain, a town guard spotted a mangy mutt sniffing around, as if seeking its' lost master. Upon hearing of this news, citizens Lady Pandora (S*RE guild) and Lord Zorax (RoU guild) remembered hearing of Lord Casca recently having lost his dog, Bartalbe.



At the behest and encouragement from the citizens, the town guard approached the dog again curious as to whether it would come forth when hearing its' name called. Lo and behold, Bartalbe wagged its' tale and came towards the town guard and followed him around, proving it was indeed the missing mutt of Lord Casca himself!



Lady Pandora and Lord Zorax offered to assume the guard's duties around the Bank of Britain in his absence while he hurried the hungry, and dirty, mutt back to Lord Casca. Once arrived at the bridge leading to Lord Casca's castle, the town guard requested entrance.



Royal Guard's Hamilton and Carlo merely laughed and snickered and barred the way in offering no assistance at all. Some time later, Lady Pandora and Lord Zorax appeared and helped create a grand diversion, allowing everyone entrance onto the bridge!



It was there, at the gated entrance that Bartalbe, mangy dog and previously lost companion of Lord Casca, was returned to his rightful master. On the return Journey, citizen Firefly (also of the RoU guild) distracted the Royal Guards Hamilton and Carlo, allowing Lady Pandora, Lord Zorax, and the town guard to leave unnoticed.

All citizens would do well to honor and praise the actions of Lady Pandora and Lord Zorax for their prompt attention and fine devotion to the kingdom, and to Lord Casca himself! Huzzah! Huzzah!

No it is not a bunch of screenshots of dead bunnies from the several bunny bashes that have happened on this holiday season.
