He Has Returned!!

Blackthorn Reappears, but is he unharmed? uninfluenced?

Blakcthorn Found!! err, well, he was just walking around, and we saw him...go figure :P

Our Lord Blackthorn (back from Time-Lord-knows where..)

Several months ago, Lord Blackthorn was seen being escorted ("escaping") through a Red Moongate from the hunt to find and kill the Evil Lord Jou'Nar. Several weeks later, he was seen again, this time in the depths of Covetous, running from hiding into yet another Red Moongate. No explanation was left for this dissapearance, and noone had spoken to the man since before these events.

NOW, he's apparently BACK...

The questions still exist, Where did he go exactly? Why did he leave? Who opened the Red Moongate?

Some have suggested that this Red Moongate was a mirror of another moongate on Britannia's "Original" shard. If this is true, I suppose it can be assumed that what happened in Ultima V (?) just finished, and Lord British there has just given Blackthorn the choice of the red moongate. Following that line of reasoning, I suppose we can believe the following idea presented to me in e-mail:

One other thing about Blackthorn. In Ultima 7 part 2: Serpent Isle I read hat it was rumored in the game -and supported by one of the in-game books- that when Blackthorn was banished through the red moongate he ended up on Serpent Isle, one of Sosaria's four original continents. There he became a monk by the name of Braccus and assisted the Avatar's party in their quest to Serpent Isle.

You can find this information at this Ultima site:
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Dungeon/1350/ultima.html

Braccus is in the Monk Isle section of the "Who's who of Serpent Isle" Following your previous surmise, maybe it is possible that Blackthorn ended up on the new continent to be "discovered" this fall?

This is an interesting possibility. If true, it would open up the amazing belief that our shards are loosely tied to what happens on the"original" shard of Britannia.
Blackthorn speaks!!
From the UO Vault, Sunday, September 27, 1998

And Quinsey sent me this from Chesapeake:

Lord Blackthorn: what is this monstrosity
Alecia Rahl: good evening my lord
Lord Blackthorn: I have been gone too long, methinks
Defiler: I cans't Hardly believe mine eyes!
Lord Blackthorn: me either
Lord Blackthorn: what a hideous show of vanity
Alecia Rahl: how may we help you my lord
Defiler: Aye
Lord Blackthorn: British never ceases to amaze me
Defiler: *laughs*
Lord Blackthorn: ah well
Lord Blackthorn: I am returning home

Upon returning to his home, Lord Blackthorn did have a few words with us, and graciously took time to speak with us before returning to his bed for the first time in awhile.

Lord Blackthorn: Aaah... home at last
Quinsey: Your presence here is most unexpected
Lord Blackthorn: I can understand that
Lord Blackthorn: I have been gone long
Lord Blackthorn: the liches Lathiari and Kyrnia
Lord Blackthorn: sent me to a far away land
Lord Blackthorn: where I was unknown
Lord Blackthorn: and that I knew not
Lord Blackthorn: then a massive earthquake
Lord Blackthorn: opened the way home
Quinsey: Aye, the FoA
Lord Blackthorn: I have been walking for many days
Lord Blackthorn: FOA?
Lord Blackthorn: who art they?
Quinsey: Followers of Armageddon
Quinsey: They are the ones who have opened up the rift
Lord Blackthorn: and what has become of Lathiari and Kyrnia?
Lord Blackthorn: oh?
Defiler: Thou hath been gone too long m'lord
Lord Blackthorn: indeed
Vanhalda: who are you sir?
Lord Blackthorn: I am blackthorn.. whoart thee?
Quinsey: It has been obviously far too long
Lord Blackthorn: aye.. many months I spent there
Lord Blackthorn: what has happened in the realm of late?
Quinsey: I fear the worst from the FoA
Lord Blackthorn: fear the worst?
Lord Blackthorn: what are they doing?
Quinsey: They are collecting reagents of Blackrock
Quinsey: I have heard rumors
Quinsey: Rumors of time travel
Lord Blackthorn: time travel
Quinsey: And speaking with wisps
Lord Blackthorn: truly?
Lord Blackthorn: wisps.. hmm..
Quinsey: Aye, they seek the Armageddon spell
Lord Blackthorn: Armageddon???
Quinsey: And they believe the wisps have knowledge
Lord Blackthorn: and they wish to use such a spell??
Lord Blackthorn: hmm..
Quinsey: They beleive it will help all
Lord Blackthorn: 'tis dire news
Lord Blackthorn: even i would never go to such extremes
Lord Blackthorn: what is British doing about them?
Lord Blackthorn: these FOA people
Defiler: Nothing...
Lord Blackthorn: nothing.. figures
Quinsey: The relm is in dire need of guidance
Lord Blackthorn: *nods*
Quinsey: Even the Vampires have made threats
Lord Blackthorn: I'm gone a few months, and things go straight to the virtuous
Lord Blackthorn: roleplay? art thou an actor?
Lord Blackthorn: dost thou perform at the theater?
Sexy Slave: I perform at the bar
Quinsey: The people have lost hope and gone delisonal
Lord Blackthorn: aah
Lord Blackthorn: *smiles*
Quinsey: I fear of losing my home, my wife and my kids
Quinsey: Please tell me you have plans
Lord Blackthorn: I think I shall make it easier to be a chaos guild
Lord Blackthorn: perhaps lower the requirements a bit
Defiler: Why is it so hard to be evil nowadays?
Lord Blackthorn: evil is always hard
Lord Blackthorn: in it's way
Lord Blackthorn: actually
Lord Blackthorn: no
Lord Blackthorn: evil is easy
Lord Blackthorn: choas is difficult
Lord Blackthorn: mindless, pathless evil can be achieved by any
Lord Blackthorn: but evil ruled by chaos takes much effort
Lord Blackthorn: i mean, any fool can steal or kill
Lord Blackthorn: but to follow a belief
Lord Blackthorn: no matter what the cost
Lord Blackthorn: that is truly profound and rarely easy
Defiler: Black Thorne is back from vacation
Quinsey: Please tell me you have plans to help rid us of the threats
Lord Blackthorn: vacation??? hardly
Lord Blackthorn: I will have to learn more if this threat
Lord Blackthorn: but I shall deal with it in my way
Quinsey: I am told that few chests remain
Lord Blackthorn: chests?
Quinsey: These chests contain the reagents of Blackrock
Lord Blackthorn: blackrock is no reagent
Lord Blackthorn: but the FOA is collecting blackrock?
Lord Blackthorn: hmmm..
Lord Blackthorn: *ponders*
Lord Blackthorn: blackrock has certain properties
Lord Blackthorn: it can block magic
Lord Blackthorn: but it also has other uses
Lord Blackthorn: I shall travel to the Lycaeum in Moonglow soon
Lord Blackthorn: and learn more
Lord Blackthorn: 'Tis not good
Lord Blackthorn: I agree
Quinsey: There are many there that seek to protect the Blackrock
Lord Blackthorn: protect...
Lord Blackthorn: sounds like one of British's plans
Quinsey: Aye, the ones still left in the chest
Lord Blackthorn: we should destroy it
Lord Blackthorn: that's what I say
Lord Blackthorn: only then can we be safe
Quinsey: We cannot gain access to destroy the items
Lord Blackthorn: I cannot say what to do just yet
Lord Blackthorn: i need to learn more
Lord Blackthorn: since i have only just returned
Lord Blackthorn: but I shall take action
Lord Blackthorn: never fear
Lord Blackthorn: I wish to rest
Lord Blackthorn: and learn more of what
Lord Blackthorn: ye have told me
Lord Blackthorn: I have merely returned home
Lord Blackthorn: that is all
Delex Fex: Is there anything we can do for you M'lord?
Lord Blackthorn: not just yet
Lord Blackthorn: this information you have given me is enough for now
Lord Blackthorn: I expect any who are willing to serve me
Lord Blackthorn: and the virtues
Delex Fex: I thought you hated the virtues M'lord.
Lord Blackthorn: Hate the Virtues??? nay!!
Lord Blackthorn: I wish them to be more rigidly followed
Lord Blackthorn: the realm would not have such problems if the virtues held more sway
Lord Blackthorn: British is too weak
Argoth: But with British on the throne, he does not have the control to uphold what
Lord Blackthorn: he never will
Lord Blackthorn: British lacks the will to do what must be done
Lord Blackthorn: he is too soft
Lord Blackthorn: compassion is good
Lord Blackthorn: true
Lord Blackthorn: but it cannot rule thee
Lord Blackthorn: My position on war is that it is good.. when necessary
Lord Blackthorn: the virtues need to be enforced.. rigidly
Lord Blackthorn: strictly
Delex Fex: It will take an army.
Lord Blackthorn: indeed
Delex Fex: It could cause civil war in the Kingdom.
Lord Blackthorn: aye
Lord Blackthorn: thou art likely correct
Delex Fex: Not everyone wants peace in the land.
Lord Blackthorn: peace is not necessarily good
Lord Blackthorn: when strife rules the land
Lord Blackthorn: I must now rest
Lord Blackthorn: I have much to think on
Lord Blackthorn: aah.. 'tis good to be back

The Town Cryer Speaks about Blackthorn's Return!

From the TC Newspaper, Thursday, October 1, 1998

Lord BlackthornRreturns
Jasper McCarrin

UP: Britannia

I had the pleasure of an audience with Lord Blackthorn. And he actually sought me - I didn't have to even ask to speak with him. To be honest, I hadn't been aware Lord Blackthorn had returned following his mysterious absence. I even went so far as to consider the entire thing a hoax being portrayed at my expense by some friends. But in reality, Lord Blackthorn wished to speak to me of recent events. Especially concerning the Followers of Armageddon. In return, I was interested in where he had been.

His story began in a battle near Trinsic where the liches, Lathiari and Kyrnai, had begun an assault on the city. Forreasons he wouldn't reveal, Lord Blackthorn had traveled to Trinsic and rallied the warriors there against the liches. His presence helping to turn the tide against them, Lathiari and Kyrnia decided to rid themselves of this nuisance. Kyrnia opened a red moongate, and Lathiari pushed Lord Blackthorn into it.

He tumbled out in a strange building followed closely by both of the liches. They bound him tightly then stepped into another red moongate and disappeared. That was the last Lord blackthorn had seen of either of them. I told Lord Blackthorn the story of Sage Humbolt's brave sacrifice to defeat Lathiari and Kyrnia once and for all by actually consuming their black hearts. Doing so caused his death, but Sage Humbolt willing gave his life since it meant ridding the land of the liches' menace.

Lord Blackthorn eventually escaped his bonds and left what appeared to be a lab. He stumbled out into a strange land. Traveling roads he had never seen or taken before this. When he finally found civilization in the form of a town, Lord Blackthorn quickly discovered that none of it's inhabitants had ever heard of Britannia or even him.

Spending every waking moment trying to determine where he was and how to return to Britannia, Lord Blackthorn passed the next couple months exploring and researching the area. He found little in the way of texts or books on this land in which he found himself. Everything was much simpler and less developed than Lord Blackthorn had ever imagined. Why, they didn't even have moongates for travel! But Lord Blackthorn found that the spells he was used to casting still worked, and so he used magic to return to the safe haven of the city after exploring the countryside.

Even in his exploring, Lord Blackthorn found nothing of any use in determining where he was. Not a single clue as to how he could return to Britannia. Then unexpectedly, the entire land was shaken by massive earthquakes. When the seizures subsided, Lord Blackthorn was amazed to have actually survived. A quick glance at his surroundings revealed one major change - openings in what had before been solid rock. Lord Blackthorn returned to town for rest, a meal, and a chance to think things over.

Making preparations for a journey into one of the openings, Lord Blackthorn packed the meager belongings he had scraped together in his new home. Determined to explore one of the new openings and see where it led, he set out. Strange noises emanated from the darkness until Lord blackthorn cast a spell of nightsight. Rough walls spread out before him and plunged into the earth. With a resolved sigh, Lord blackthorn began his journey into the unknown.

Lord Blackthorn made his way along the winding passages when he suddenly emerged into the sunlight. He was standing beside a mountain. The land looked very different from where he had just come from, but he wasn't sure yet where he was. Following the mountain side to the east, He began to recognize the jungles west of Trinsic. With a relieved, but weary, smile on his face, Lord blackthorn turned to the north and began his trek home.

I asked his current plans for the moment, and after a short pause, he responded by saying he wanted to find out even more about the Followers of Armageddon. I had already told him of all my findings. When I asked him how he would find out anything else, he again smiled. He said that since Sage Winslow was supposed to be released from his cell in the Yew prison, Lord Blackthorn would go to Yew and escort the sage back to Britain. Lord blackthorn intended to invite Sage Winslow to his castle and find out if the sage knew anything about the FOA. I wished him luck, as no one else had managed to learn anything of use from the sage.

I received another bit of news from the other castle in Britain. Nystul, the mage to Lord British, has been working on finding a way to open the enchanted chests in which the Followers of Armageddon were so interested. It was already known that each chest contained a large piece of blackrock. Nystul did not know what the purpose for the blackrock was, but wished to experiment on some if he could. He asks any citizen who manages to come into possession of a piece of blackrock to bring it to him at Lord British's castle. He warns that he may be deeply involved in his research and may not be easily reached, but that a call into the ether should grab his attention. Or at least the attention of those who generally watch for such calls. In exchange for the blackrock, Nystul has three items to offer as well as his own abilities which may allow him to modify the enchantments on existing magic items. He can, for example, recharge a wand. The three items he offers are an ancient mage's hat, an ancient robe, and an ancient staff. All three have magical qualities, but he did not go into the details of those. Thank you for helping him collect any blackrock you find.
