Characteristics: Grond has long hair and a full beard because, he notes, Britannian tinkers don’t sell razors. He’s usually seen wearing dark grey or green studded leather, though he occasionally dons a hat as a cunning disguise
Background: Grond's ambition as a youth was to become a world-renowned
blacksmith. He traveled to the far-off town of Minoc, and began mining,
painstakingly dragging ore to the forge while a few of the shiftier
inhabitants of Minoc danced around him, taunting him and trying to grab
his ore. After a seemingly interminable number of unhappy days doing
this, he eventually decided that he despised people and that, instead of
becoming a world-famous blacksmith, he was going to become a Hated and
Feared Evil Macer, since people had begun to seem much more satisfying
as potential targets for his hammer than the anvil ever had. He moved
to Britain, where a friend showed him there were easier and more
pleasant mountains to mine, and discovered that most people who weren't
taunting miners in Minoc actually seemed to be quite friendly and
decent folk; but the dream of being an Evil Macer remained. He kept
mining, because he was stubborn and refused to quit, and he began
smithing, because as an Evil Macer he was going to need a steady supply
of high-quality maces.
Many Sosarian years later, having reached the pinnacle of the mining
profession, he finally set out to learn the ways of battle. He went
into the world each day, with evil intentions in his heart, found groups
of adventurers in dire trouble, and... helped them. Somehow, he never
got around to actually performing any evil deeds; instead, he bandaged
the wounded, fought beside those who needed an extra hammer, and helped
the freshly-resurrected locate their corpses and retrieve their
possessions. As an Evil Macer, he lacked only two things: He wasn't
evil, and he was exceptionally unskilled with a mace. Not wanting to
become just another goody-two-shoes save-the-fair-maiden warrior like
his cousin Dunross, Grond languished at home, eating pizza and loafing
around in his fuzzy slippers.
Many, many years later, the Meer arrived in Sosaria. At last, he had a
cause! While everyone else extolled the virtues and wisdom of the Meer,
it was clear to Grond that they were bent on the destruction of the
world - whether they were consciously aware of it or not. Irresponsibly
using powerful world-altering magicks with unintended effects, almost
causing the destruction of the known worlds - it was clear that these
beings had to be stopped. Grond founded HAM, Humans Against the Meer,
for the purpose of eliminating the threat that the Meer posed to
humanity. He convinced some of his brothers and cousins to join, but no
one else seemed to accept that the Meer posed a substantial threat, and
so the guild remained in the family. Nevertheless, HAM was ultimately
successful in convincing the Meer that humans were worthy of respect
rather than patronizing contempt, and the Meer have apparently stopped
misusing their world-altering magicks... at least for now. HAM was
renamed to Bureau 13, and the purpose broadened to eliminating
undesirable aspects of the supernatural.
With his brothers and sisters out fighting the nastier supernatural
beasties, Grond has begun to learn the ways of stealth, so that he can
more easily gather information about the various threats to humankind -
and perhaps crack open a chest of gold or two. He enjoys recreational
sailing, and has recently begun a campaign to rid the seas of dragons -
he has found many seagoing dragons in Sosaria recently, and since he
never did learn the ways of combat, considers these to be a dire threat
to all seafarers. He's not sure whether it was his commitment to public
safety or his recent training to gain information stealthily which
brought him to the attention of the Stratics news team, but he's
grateful for the opportunity to edify the public about the dangers of
seafaring dragons, the Meer, rabbits, and other dangerous denizens of
Sosaria.
