Runes and Rune Books
RUNES
Runes is the abbreviated name for recall runes. Runes are sold by mage vendors in magic shops. They are little wooden tokens when you buy them.

When you find an interesting location in the game, you may wish to have a way to travel there quickly. Pull out your recall rune and cast the spell MARK. This will bring up a targeting cursor and ask you to select the rune. If successful, the rune will now hold that location. It is marked.

Runes marked in the Felucca facet will be the same hue as unmarked runes. However, runes that are marked in the Trammel facet will have a golden hue to them.

Later on in the game, you will have probably adventured to Skara Brae or somewhere, but you would like to return to the interesting spot in the dungeon Covetous. Simply cast recall. This again will bring up a targeting cursor and you should select the rune you have marked previously. You will be instantaneously teleported to that location.

Once a rune is marked, it will always hold that mark, and it can not be erased or unless it has been re-marked over. You can not return a marked rune to the blank state.

A Recall rune (commonly referred to as a "rune") is a small wooden token available from mage vendors in most magic shops. A Recall rune has two states: blank or marked.

When you find an interesting location in the game that you think you may wish to return to, you can mark a rune with the location using the Mark spell. This will bring up a targeting cursor and ask for you to select the rune. If successful, the rune will now hold that location. It is marked.

At some later time, when you wish to return to the marked location, you can use the Recall spell on your rune, to return. Just cast Recall to receive a targeting cursor. Target the specific rune (which you should have in your backpack), and you are instantaneously teleported to the marked location.

Once a rune is marked, it will always hold that mark unless it has been re-marked to a new destination. You can not return a marked rune to the blank state.

RUNEBOOKS
General Features
A runebook can hold a total of 16 locations, with one location set as the "default." Casting the Recall, Gate Travel, or Sacred Journey spell on the runebook treats the entire book as a rune marked with the current "default" location.

Runebooks also have charges that allow you to recall to locations in the book without casting a spell. The greater the skill of the creator of the book, the more charges it contains. Using a charge does require that you have the necessary Magery skill and Mana to cast the spell, just as casting from a scroll.

The runebook can be recharged using Recall scrolls by dragging and dropping a Recall scroll onto the book. This adds one charge per scroll (up to the maximum amount for the rune book). The maximum charges a book can hold is determined by the skill of the scribe who created the book at the time of its creation.

You may name your runebook by opening the book and clicking on the red gem at the upper right. After clicking the gem, type in the name of the book and press [Enter].

Runebooks have no weight. They also cannot be stolen if kept in the top level of your backpack (and not in any sub-pack), and if you die while holding any number of runebooks in your backpack, they will re-appear in your backpack after you resurrect (in the same manner as spellbooks).

Creating Runebooks
Runebooks are crafted using the Inscription skill. Your Inscription skill needs to be at least 45.0 before you will be able to create a runebook. To create a runebook, a scribe needs 8 blank scrolls, 1 Recall scroll, 1 Gate Travel scroll and a blank rune. The scribe must then use the Inscription skill and target the blank rune. The system will then check to make sure you have the necessary components. If the creation fails, the scribe loses most of the ingredients.

The number of charges a runebook can hold ranges from five to ten, depending on the skill of the scribe. A runebook can additionally be of "exceptional" quality if the scribe is particularly skilled, and thus holds more charges. Regular runebooks generally hold 5 to 8 charges, while exceptional quality runebooks generally hold 7 to 10 charges.

Using Runebooks
Runebooks cannot be equipped.

Casting the Recall, Gate, or Sacred Journey spell on a runebook transports you (or creates a gate) to the location set as the book's default.

You may access the non-default locations by opening (double-clicking) the book. While open, the book displays two index pages with 8 locations on each page. The index pages also display the current number of charges in the upper left corner and the maximum book charges in the upper right. The index pages display the first 18 characters from the marked rune's name. At the bottom of the index pages, there are the numbers "1" - "8" (just like spellbooks). Clicking these numbers brings you to a "rune page".

Each location in a runebook is marked by a small blue "recall" button (similar looking to the buttons used in the skill list). Clicking this button uses a charge and transports you to the specified location, assuming the book has remaining charges and you have enough Magery skill and Mana to cast the spell (or, in the case of the Sacred Journey ability, if you have enough tithing points). If the book has no charges left, you will not be able to do this.

After each use (success or failure) the runebook needs a few seconds to "recharge".

If you use a scroll to cast the recall spell you can only target the book itself and therefore only travel to the default location set on the rune book.

Each rune page (the pages past the index pages) contains a button (a small down arrow) to drop the rune from the book. This returns a rune with that location marked on it.

Also on each page are the sextant coordinates of the rune's location, and a button to make the rune location the default location. This button appears green unless the location is the default location, in which case it will be red.

Rune locations in the Felucca facet will be labeled with green text in a runebook, locations in the Trammel facet will be labeled with purple text, and locations in the Malas facet will be labeled with gray text.

In order to travel to a location using a runebook, you must be on the same facet as that location. You cannot travel between facets by using a runebook.
