Tournament in Nujelm |
Tired of the cold, I searched for some heat down South, on Fire Island. My good friend Ariadne owns a small tower there, so I spent the night. It was one of those nights when the air was so hot and heavy with the scent of flowers that even the bees seemed drunk on it. During that night, I also received news of this tournament from Aliara Nightbane. Saturday, December 29th at 11pm EST, the guild of PE (Power of the Elements) began the first multi-guild tournament in the town of Nu'jelm on the Checkerboard to the southwest of the castle, Trammel side on the Chesapeake Shard. |

Seeking Tales of In-game Accomplishments |
On FYI:
We’ve all reached a goal, or completed a particularly challenging task that left us with an immense feeling of accomplishment. There is something invariably pleasing about reaching our most wanted of aspirations. Even in game, there are tangible goals that players reach for everyday. Everything from buying your dream house, to finally GM’ing a skill you’ve put so much work into can leave behind a sense of achievement. It validates your efforts, and compels you towards further success. |

[Spoiler] Scenario Book |
Here is a transcript of "Kabur's Journal". Some words are missing (marked by ????) because I couldn't make them out at the time I was copying the book down (they scrolled off the edge of the pages). The book itself can be found in the large bedroom at the back of the castle, on the ground floor. It is of the small red variety, and is sitting on the desk in the north of the room. ------------------------- The campaign to slaughter the Meer goes well. Although they seem to oppose the forces of ours at every turn, we still defeat them in combat. Spies of the Meer have been found slain outside the fortress of ours. The fools underestimate us. We have the power of Lord Exodus behind us. Soon they will learn to serve the Juka and I shall carry the head of the wench, Dasha, on a spike for all the warriors of ours to share triumph under. |

Dev Team Confirms Skeletal Horse |
The lastest UO article on Gamespy included a picture of the a skeletal horse that will appear in UO:LBR. For all you 2D lovers…notice that this is a picture of the mount in 2D. :) In an e-mail group, Calandryll confirmed :
The pic of the horse is a skeletal mount…. Evocare added:
Yep, that's a skeletal horse as it looks in 2d. What you see there are Evocare and FierY iCe battling the spider king "Mephitis" (one of the "boss" monsters that can appear in Ilshenar). =]

A new Comment from the Team has been released. This time GM Silvani is talking about how she became part of the Ultima Online Community and her work as a Game Master:I don’t think I can remember a time in my life when there wasn’t a computer or some sort of game to play. I spent my childhood with my hands wrapped around a game controller or a keyboard. With all the Ultimas of the past under my belt, it was only natural to be excited about the idea of Ultima Online. |

Mysterious New "Juka" Race Discovered |
A messenger knocked on my door delivering a troubling letter along with a transcription of a journal and images of a strange new race. I shall report more after I study the contents of the journal.
The old man came staggering into the ancient tower. Leaning against the wall, he plucked out an arrow and groaned in pain. He let his healing magic seal up the wound and wandered over to his desk and began to write while muttering something about the damned archers. |

Treasure Hunt scheduled! |
Something you folks might be interested in. It seems as if there might be a night of fun and treasure hunting for everyone. Starting at roughly 1 PM EST, this Saturday at the Skara Brae bank; I will be hosting a public treasure hunting expedition for the entire Siege Perilous community to participate in (reds and blues alike). Once the chest is unearthed and the initial spawn dealt with, whatever loot that resides in the chest (magic weapons/armour and scrolls/reagents) will be free for the taking! The gold within the chest itself will be only my claim. Needless to say, this will offer those who are either new or still struggling on the shard with the opportunity to acquire needed riches and equipment. In addition, I will render resurrection and healing services to ensure no dead are left behind before proceeding to the next location. All digs will be done with level 3 maps. Boeman I hope to see you all there! Editors note: This event to take place on January 19, 2002 at 1pm EST |

Calandryll on a 4-Yr Player Leaving |
It's always sad when a long time player leaves the community. While I may not agree with some of what she said, I think it's also important to look at the fact that she did stay for so long. Most of these games have an average customer life of about 3, maybe up to 6, months. That's it. Four years, in the scheme of the average player is astounding. We still have a lot of 4.5-year vets playing UO (including myself) but yes, eventually, we are going to lose some. Think about how many services you are a part of and then think about how many you have stuck with for that long. Most people don't even keep the same cell phone or pager provider for more than a couple of years and probably wouldn't keep the same cable provider for that long if they had a choice in the matter.Note: I’ve removed the name of the player and a paragraph that might have identified her. |

Sacrifice Display Issue |
The following was just posted to FYI:
Players participating in the new Sacrifice virtue system may notice that advancement after level one will appear to proceed very quickly at first and then stop. This is an issue we are aware of, whereby the system is not correctly reporting the progress of Sacrifice beyond level one. It is important to note that you are still gaining the appropriate amount of Sacrifice, and it is only the "status bubbles" display which is incorrect. |

Speedcasting Legal |
On the MyUO Discussion Boards, Seraphim gave these instructions on how to speedcast: … Cast spell and bring up target cursor (precast). Next hold down macro for your next spell wait until screen spasms saying something to the effect you are already casting spell. Victim comes into view to attack (lets say someone pops out at a moongate)....release precast spell...hit last target key spell two is gone...hit a spell/last target macro spell three gone. That is a triple speedcast and takes about 3 secs to cast 3 powerful spells. Canyon, Player Relations Training Lead, assured players:
It's true, and considered a legal part of gameplay. Good luck! In an e-mail group, Evocare commented:
This is new news? Or did this knowledge get lost somewhere down the line? Mages have been using this method for years now, ever since the delay between spells was put into effect (at the time there was no 'last target'macro in built into the client, so it was meant to offset some of the UOA advantage). This "fast casting" method doesn't change the total time from start to finish to cast two spells in a row, it simply allows you to trade a longer delay for your first spell for a shorter delay between the first and second spells. Heck, I'm not aware of any pvp balancing measures that ever *didn't* take this method into account. Maybe this explains a little of why some mages feel underpowered... lordy. :P |

PAS Gold Caravan Rides Again This Friday! |
PAS is at it again! I saw this story posted by Kind David as I was flipping through the boards. KD waited patiently for the others. Soon he heard steps in the hallways and then the doors opened, and McDuff and Aegisthus entered the room.Sounds like gold caravan is set to ride again this Friday! The caravan will begin in Trinsic and end in Britain. As King David indicated in the past, the caravan will get a little more challenging each week. This week the caravan may choose to deviate from the road, although it will be on the road for the majority of the trip. Also, there will be more than one caravan, with "decoys" (empty packhorses)to trick the attackers. The pack horses will once again carry 150K in gold as well some special items, and PAS members have been instructed to not dole out murder counts. However, KD advises that players not be too quick to rez, as lost cons or lag can sometimes cause a count to be unintentionally given. Also, players who are not in PAS have made no such promise, and may choose to give out counts by the heaping spoonful, so PK carefully. Once a packhorse has fallen, this week, PAS members will attempt to loot the packhorses before the attackers can snag the goods. PAS members will them attempt to carry the gold themselves to Britain. King David has called for PAS Members to line up in Trinsic by 8PM CDT, aand the caravan will leave Trinsic as close to 8:30 PM CDT as possible. |

BNN - Downfall to Power |
A new BNN has been posted - Downfall to Power by Gromm: In a darkened chamber, Lord Blackthorn drifted forwards and backwards, alone and deep in thought. The cloak surrounding his lower torso dragged slightly along the floor with a hiss; the only sound he made while moving about. If he wished, he could easily drift higher above the floor so that his cloak did not touch it, but the sound gave him an odd comfort. He was still unaccustomed to not hearing his own footsteps. It was strange to him that such things could be missed. |

Stratics Network Update |
Greetings folks! This is just a brief update on the status of our new server. As most of you are aware, we had a frustrating four-week period of sporadic outages due to hardware related problems with a new server we’d received. Yesterday, that server was completely replaced with a new server. Rather than trying to swap out various components any further to track the problem down, we decided to simply replace the entire thing just to make absolutely certain the matter is resolved once and for all. This is now done and everything seems to be moving along very nicely. From all of us here at Stratics, thank you for your patience and understanding during this very difficult period. During the next two weeks you will begin to see a series of web site redesigns, which will kick-start many new services and features that will be found throughout the network. Not only will our sites become cleaner, faster and easier than ever to navigate, but you will also find new features being added to the web sites as well. More interactive and dynamic elements will begin to appear on our sites and we believe you’ll really enjoy visiting our sites more than ever. We’re very excited about all of this and now that the hardware related matters are behind us, we can focus on rolling this stuff out the door! So once again, thank you for your patience and understanding. We hope you will enjoy the changes as they begin to appear. As always please feel free to contact me anytime if you have any questions and/or concerns about the Stratics Network. "Swords of Darkness" Quest - Anna's Tale (Part II) |
I was beginning to lose hope of hearing from Lady Rose Bush. Until this morning that is, when the messenger again arrived at my door. He thrust the paper in my hands, "T'is a matter of extreme urgency milord". I dismissed him, sat down at my desk, and broke the seal on the scroll.....
The Sword of Power, my heart fell, my fear increased for the poor girl ten-fold. Anna sat, her face still pale, eyes distant as her tale continued. Nothing could pull me away from this, her voice was full of raw emotions as she drew upon the memories so fresh in her mind. I was about to discard the scroll when I noticed a scribble at the bottom...
PS. Joram, I do not know where she has gone! I worry so much for her, I left her to rest that eve and when I returned the following day she had vanished. I fear for her life... So we now know who holds the Sword of Power. I sense a great feeling of dread in the air, the battle to recover the master sword is upon us... |

Journey of a GM Cartographer |
The sun was burning an orange scar across the sky. The wind was rustling lightly through the trees but I was too exhausted to see it. I had just spent months and months trying to decode the hardest treasure map I had ever seen. It was virtually impossible to decrypt and I knew my skills in cartography must improve if ever I was to read the map clearly. This is my journey to become a grand master cartographer. The morning was still dark when I awoke from a deep sleep. I had dreamt of drowning in paper, scrolls and ink for this was to be the first day in my quest to become a cartographer. I walked from my bedroom to my kitchen, quickly preparing myself a pork sandwich for breakfast, then went and sat at my writing table. It was hard work. I inscribed map after map until, tens of thousands of world maps later I felt my skills were approaching the level needed to call myself a master. During this time I took many breaks from my table, going on excursions to Khaldun and using my brain in different ways, both by fighting monsters and doing the puzzle chests. Luck was on my side as occasionally I would find a treasure map, that most elusive of items, and these I would stockpile. My supply of treasure maps grew also from the donations from my guild mates in the Virtuous Knights of the Realms and other friends. I would find the occasional lich would also carry treasure maps much to my delight. As my skill in cartography grew I noted that some more crudely drawn maps were easily decoded by my skills but some were not. Others I would pour over until I cracked its code. I was soon told about a ranking system developed a long time ago for treasure maps. An old grizzled treasure hunter had ranked maps from one to five with level one maps being the easiest and five being the hardest. As this seemed the best method of coordination my efforts I adopted this method and soon found my skills made me capable of doing right up to level 4 maps. My skills were perfect, I thought, until the day I found what could only be a level 5 treasure map. I couldn’t decode it. I poured over that map for hours trying to decode it, referring often to maps I had already decoded. Slowly the map started to make sense. Finally after six days of painstakingly slow work, I decoded the map and it was at this point I knew I could call myself a grandmaster cartographer. But I was to discover that was not the only skill I needed to successfully perform a treasure hunt. As the months had rolled by I had been working up my lock picking skills. I had a large supply of chests I had set up in a room in my house and in between decoding maps I would challenge my fingers in a different way, locking each chest and using my lock picking tools to unlock them again. After I felt my skills were at a high level I decided to use my skills in a practical scenario and I could frequently be seen running around the towns unlocking chests wherever I could find them (and locking them again after myself, I am a Virtuous individual you know). Soon after I felt I could try some more dangerous trips and I would make my way to locations like the yew crypts, destard, the low levels of covetous, ogre lords isle and so on. The advantage of this was I was able to make a lot of money, getting usually between fifty thousand and sixty thousand gold pieces per hour. I died often doing this but I felt my skill growing in this area too until finally I found that all locks would fall prey to my skill. I had also become a grandmaster in lockpicking. With this my future was set. I had a healthy career to look forward to hiring myself out to individuals needing to complete their treasure maps. So now I find myself looking for work. Do you perhaps require the services of both a GM cartographer and lockpicker? If so please consider my services. I will decode the map, find the location, dig up the chest, kill the spawns with my pet dragons/mares and loot the chest for you. All I ask is that I get to keep what my pets kill. Whatever is in the chest is yours of course. If you wish to contact me to discuss anything further or to hire me please send a pigeon to my ICQ # 35348320. I hope to do business with you soon Arther Treasure Hunter of VKR 35348320 |

The Orcs of ShadowClan |
This was sent to me from the Orcs. Sounds interesting! Visit www.shadowclan.cx if you don't remember your Orcish. It had been three days since the Shadowclan Gruntee had set out on his Quest. He was ordered to find one-thousand gold, potions, food, cider, and a full suit of armor and weapon without using any human vendors. He had found weapons, armor, bandages, and some food to hold him over. Still, he did not have enough to return to the Orc fort. The sun had begun to set, and the Gruntee was getting drowsy. “Sun goin duwn, me shuud makr kamp fur da nite,” Said he, half in a daze. Stopping suddenly, a great aroma filled his head. He spied a fire, and camped around it, a band of four thieves sat. Stalking them, and hiding behind trees and bushes, allowed him to get close enough to the camp. He dropped to the ground. One of the thieves rose up and walked off slightly east of the Gruntee. The orc sneaked along with the human until he was far away from the camp. A quick tap on the humans back caused him to spin around, only to find an orc swinging a large mace at his head. Taking what he could use, he noticed a small pouch tucked away by the thieves back, and inside it, lay a purple potion. “Dis get doze oomies!” The orc chuckled to himself. Sneaking back to the camp, the orc found the humans, still awake and drunk. “Fink me sobur dem up.” And with that, he released the lock on the potion and threw it right into the middle of them. BOOM! A small crater and a chest of supplies (which was quickly looted) was all that was left of the camp. Feeling content, the Orc decided it was time for sleep. Tightening his new stolen bedroll around himself, the orc fell into a deep sleep. He awoke the next day to the sound of running water. Having run out of drink and the ale and booze from the thieves camp being blown up, the orc slowly walked to the direction of the water. Longer and longer he walked, unsure if there was actually any water or if his mind was playing tricks on him. A sudden boom of force caught his attention. Above him lay a great waterfall, taller than any tower he had ever seen. He took a long drink and washed his face in the clear water. “Wonder where dis comin frum,” he thought to himself. Suddenly, he heard a loud whistling coming from the right of him. He shot behind a tree, and peered out from behind it. A human mage seemed to walk out from the mountain itself and over to the waterfall. Gathering a full pitcher of water, the human moved back towards where he came. The Gruntee, now as alert as ever, watched as the mage walked straight into the mountain! The orc, not knowing what was happening, walked up to the wall where the human had gone through. Poking his mace at the wall it seemed to vanish. He quickly pulled his mace back and pondered at the strange mountain. “Da heck am dis? Womp dissapeerin, oomie dissapeerin, da skah going on!” With a deep breath, the orc put his paw through the wall. Felling no pain or anything unusual, he stepped in. Before him lay a long tunnel with a bright light at the end. Slowly making his way through it, he came to a small field. A tall tower and many benches and campfires lay still in this valley. Taking a closer look, he noticed three human wizards inside the tower. Suddenly, the door to the tower broke down, and at the steps was an angry orc. One of the humans turned to him and spoke with a smile, “Hail and well met friend! All are welcome in the valley of….” Smash! The human caught the orcs mace square in the head. “That was not nice!” Began another, but suffered a similar fate like the first. “Now see here you, you, what are you, any ways?” Began the last, but was cut off by a mace in his chest. Satisfied that all was well, the orc climbed to the top of the tower. A cool breeze flew by him as he surveyed the land around. “Lat can see fur milez agh milez! Dis bubhosh scout agh defenze place. Me makr map agh shuw dis tu udurs!” Exclaimed the orc with a smirk. “Me,” he began, “Me claim dis uzg fur da Shadurclan! Hoowah!” And with that, he left his orc helmet on top of the tower, as proof of his conquest. ************************************************************ OOC: The mountains west of Trinsic have been claimed by the Shadowclan Orcs! They will be frequenting their new outpost to eliminate any humans on their new land (tribute restrictions apply outside the mountain) and wreck havoc on the city of Trinsic. |

VKR attacked |
Prologue Water dripped from an overhanging roof into a spreading pool of water. The alley was steaming from a late storm, which had torn through Buccaneers Den, unleashing a torrent of rain on a hot humid town. The alley was quiet and still. The moonlight streamed in from the gaps between the buildings lighting up the steam. Into this dark street a man came running. You could tell from a glance he was a seaman. His bare feet and skullcap announced that clearer than any words could. His look of terror though spoke volumes. He was running flat out down the alley when a shadow creased the light at the far end of the tunnel. He pulled up short and drew his sword and dagger from his belt. He spun around to run back the way he had come only to see another shadow approaching from that end. A skittering sound was heard along the rooftop above him and he quickly glanced up. Again though there was nothing tangible to see. How can I fight something that has no form, he asked himself. “If you want me, come and get me and I will send you back to the pits of hell” He yelled at the shadow monsters. “We will see you safely there first” came a hissing voice. The shadows lunged forward. The man spun his sword and dagger around in large arcs hoping to keep the shadows at bay but one of the shadows on the roof uttered a spell which left the man paralysed. The shadows advanced slowly. The man looked from shadow to shadow trying to escape the whole while, but it was useless. The shadows looked at each other, then at the man in front of them. Suddenly something sharp whipped across the mans throat, allowing a line of blood to appear. The line quickly became a flood as the mans life bled from him. The shadows slowly backed away from the corpse, merging with the steam and darkness. The man stayed upright for a long time. His blood flowing down his body but unable to fall due to the paralyse spell. After five minutes the body fell, landing in a heap on the ground. Blood dripped from the corpse into what was once a clear pool of water, turning it into a bright scarlet. So passes Jaguar, Seafarer of the Virtuous Knights of the Realms. Chapter 1 “This is ridiculous” Ronin said as he slammed his fist on the table. “How can we sit here talking about this when our fellow guild mates are being killed” “Calm Ronin, Calm” Anastasia stated coolly “We are all outraged and upset by what has happened but now is the time for planning, not retaliation.” “Ana is right” Raptor said “Does anyone have any ideas on how to find this menace?” “Milord I have been looking through the library and my own volumes but it has been very tedious. I find my own knowledge lacking as I used to rely on Whisper to coordinate our research efforts.” Brannon said sadly. “What I have found however is information on a sect of priests. The name of their God I know not but I believe they could be our hidden enemy.” “What makes you think this?” Aquarius asked. “Well a few things really, but what started my reasoning was something you had chronicled Ana. It came about after Zarkon’s encounter with the shadow foes. His description of his attackers led me to a volume of your early time in VKR, Ana, when you penned a story for Artimas. The story was of a grand quest which Artimas went on. In it was mentioned a cave which he went into to find a piece of a magic sceptre. The cave however had an evil shrine set into one corner of the cave. Artimas is said to have grown offended by the evil nature of the shrine and destroyed it. Underneath the shrine was the piece of the sceptre but as Artimas bent to retrieve it he was attacked by a mysterious shadow. He turned around to retaliate and when he did the piece of sceptre he had burst into light and the shadow fled from the cave. I started to look up occult practises and evil religions of that time and found out that there was only one. It was having huge sway among some regions and Lord British himself had to move in and subdue it after a spate of murders and lynchings. The order was disbanded and the religion itself was outlawed.” “But what led to you think that this was our hidden enemy?” Ronin asked. “Zarkon said he was carrying a magic dagger, the pommel of which was made from a piece of the sceptre after it was virtually destroyed at the end of Artimas’s quest. It was a gift made and given to Zarkon to honour his service in VKR. Zarkon said when he drew the dagger and attacked the shadow with it, it was repelled, and flew off. It is a huge leap I know, but the only thing I have come up with.” Brannon said. “It is the closest thing we have had to a lead yet and I believe in my heart that it is the right one.” Raptor said. “Have we any idea where the other pieces of the sceptre are?” “I am afraid not Milord” Brannon replied “There was not much left of the sceptre after the battle and the small shards that were left were made into various weapons and given as gifts by Artimas” “Anastasia. Are you aware of anyone who received these gifts?” Raptor asked. “I might be able to track down a few Milord, I believe a few might have been given to the leaders of some of our associated guilds at the time. I will look into it” Ana replied. “We will need as many of these as possible, as well as any other things which we can determine to have an effect against these creatures” Raptor said. “Milord, may I say something?” Ronin asked “Certainly, please speak your mind” Raptor stated. “We have lost a great number of knights and mages to these unknown assailants over the last few months and our numbers are greatly reduced. I believe it imperative for us to get more fine warriors and mages into our guild in case we or our lands are attacked by any number of the enemies of Virtue. We would be hard pressed to keep any enemy at bay at this stage. Milord we need members” “I concur with Ronin” Autumn said “We must look to the future as well as the monsters lurking today or the future of VKR might be lost. Let us recruit and train up new members now to fight the battles we will encounter today and in the tomorrow’s to come”. Raptor stood thinking about this for many minutes. The Knights and Mages whispered among themselves. Never before had VKR led an active recruitment campaign. Always before people had been approached one on one for entry into the guild. Raptor then turned and faced the assembled VKR members. “I agree with your words Ronin and your words are also very wise Autumn. Let it be known that from today the Virtuous Knights of the Realms are looking for members. VKR will not fall, it will not crumble. It will not succumb to its enemies or run from them. We are knights all of us. Knights of the Realm and VKR will stand against all evils, for the good of the land.” With that the members left the meeting, each off to prepare themselves by whatever means necessary. Epilogue From a shadowed niche in one of the upper stone corners of the roof, a dark shape detached itself from the wall and flew out a window, leaving an icy chill and the departing VKR meeting in its wake. It flew west until it came to a small cave near the mountains. It landed and swept inside. “Lord, the VKR knights are planning to fight back against us” The shadow warrior hissed. Sitting on a stone throne, was the lord of shadows, a shadowed cape lay next to him. “Good its about time that snivelling mob fought back. The killing was getting boring. Now we will see what the supposed “virtuous knights of the realms” have in them. And as they fight back we will send each one to hell.” With that he started laughing evilly and the laugh echoed through the mountains, making even the most cruel of monsters, run in fear. If you know of any acticities of this dark league please visit our boards at http://vkr.ausgamers.com/forums/index.php or ICQ me on 92344436 Alternatively VKR will be at West Britain Bank in Trammel on the 23rd of January at 9pm AEST (sydney time) so you can come and advise of any information you are aware of or just come and meet people. Evocare on BOD System and UO |
Another comment from an email discussion group from Tom “Evocare” Chilton about the BOD system:[…]Truth be told, the BOD system is intended to be a fun diversion... something that can add a twist to the daily routine of a blacksmith in UO. It wasn't designed to be a fundamental change to the way people run a blacksmithing business, or an improvement to the supply/demand values of the items blacksmiths can already create. |

Commodities Update |
The update on the commodity system has just moved back from General Testing to In Development again. Here is a reminder of the proposed system: Five specific resources will be affected in how they are purchased from, and sold to, by NPC shopkeepers. These five commodities are: leather, ingots (iron), wood (boards), crossbow bolts, and arrows. These changes are designed to help accommodate consumers, allowing them to purchase these five commodities in bulk, while not excluding the efforts of related resource gathering professionals. |

Reflections of Barth: The Old Smith |
With all this recent talk about smiths, I remembered my first encounter with one in these lands. The mountains had called to me one morn. So I took a stroll up north of Brit. As the mountains grew higher and higher in front of me. I could distinctly hear the scraping of shovels on rock with the tink-tink of pickaxes on ore. The woods broke and the smell of the familiar forest was overtaken by the scent of earth and rock. Countless miners could be seen up and down the crags of broken rock. Heaving shovel loads of rock and dirt. The dust produced from their labors glistened in the morning sun, streaking my view of the back breaking work. I noticed an older fellow, somewhat working off to the side of the main production. I meandered closer and closer. Clearing my throat to announce my approach, the old miner glanced up. "Aye lad? Wat ye be need'n?" "Well sir, you see, I was out for a my morning stroll. And this morn I felt like getting closer to the mountains. They are so large and majestic. Truly a glorious sight to behold as the sun's rays bounce off the granite." The old man cut me off rather shortly, "me name be Anvil McDoogle. And if ye ain't be need'n me services as a smitty ort miner then me need'n to be ask'n ye to move along. Me got much work to be dun before the sun goes to bed." I paused for a moment, thinking to myself that in fact I did have need for a smith. My war axe had grown rather dull in the recent weeks and was in much need of repair. "Well good sir, if you are truly a smith, then I am in fact in need of your services." I withdrew the ax from my pack, holding it out to him. "As you can see, my weapon is in need of repair." Anvil snatched the ax from my hands and motioned for me to follow. He kicked a few stones here and there as he walked. Lumbering towards an out door forge at the entrance to the main mines, shaking his head as he walked. "Some folk just ain't ment to own no metal. Not know'n good from bad uses," he muttered. "You bin using this to split rock with?" he asked. I quickly shook my head "no". His hand gently caressing the weapon as he laid it out flat on the anvil. Drawing up a hammer he struck the weapon. After several minutes of toiled labor between the forge and the anvil, the old smith held up what looked to me to be a brand new ax. "Here ya be lad. Now don't go split'n no rocks or dig'n no ditches wit it." Grabbing a handful of coin from my pouch, I traded the man for my freshly honed war ax. "Thank you Mr. McDoogle, you have done a fine job with this." "Bah, tis notin. Ye should see what me can do wit me own creations." And with that Anvil winked, turned and lumbered off back to his pile of rocks at the side of the mountain. I still see that old miner-smith from time to time. When I do I always pause and ask about his health and business. And he always answers with the same thing. "if ye ain't be need'n me services as a smitty ort miner then me need'n to be ask'n ye to move along. Me got much work to be dun before the sun goes to bed." I always chuckle and then let him repair my war ax while he tells a tale of ore or rocks. |

Timestorm |
As I sat in my cabin, curled up under a blanket, I heard a faint rasping noise outside. At first, I dismissed it as yet another polar bear searching for food, but caution urged me to make sure it was not a wandering orc. It was indeed! I opened the door and the howling wind almost knocked me off my feet. The orc was there, badly hurt, sitting on the steps outside, holding his head. He was startled by me and ran away, leaving behind his backpack. It contained a book with a poem written by Zog the Fishmonger. The hallowed halls of antiquity |

MGON UO:LBR Dev Diary |
As part of the Developer Diary Series in support of UO:LBR, Media and Games Online Network posted this article from Hanse on developing the new crafting system. A sampling from this article:
The new system had to be interesting to a developing blacksmith, allow skill gain, and give ongoing and measured rewards to the player. In many ways, the system needed to parallel the “treasure map” system that has been present (and quite successful) in Ultima Online for several years now. I went to the drawing board with nothing specific in mind, just a lot of rough ideas and a chance to create something new - which is an opportunity designers on a live team crave but rarely receive! After bouncing ideas off other designers and players, I decided on a course of action that involved making a totally new system that would exist separately from any specific crafting skill, yet still enhances blacksmithing by essentially working in tandem with it. Definitely more work then making a few simple additions to the blacksmithing skill, but a much higher pay-off for our players. |

Why LBR Isn’t Working for New FanFest CD |
On the FAQs, Cynthe explained why the LBR beta CD isn’t showing all the new art yet:
The LBR final beta CD that was given out at the FanFest has the LBR code on it, but the shard has to also be activated to run it. This means that the new art from UO: LBR isn't going to be visible on production shards yet - even though the art is on the CD, the shards aren't calling for those files, which is why you may see old 2D art in place of the new art for now. |

A New Server Has Arrived |
Woohoo!! Finally the new web server has been installed. For those of you that were not able to grab the news from our forums or one of the other UO fan sites, here's a message we sent out earlier today: Greetings folks! Well, it has been one frustrating issue after another with regard to this new server we moved to a couple weeks ago. Here is where we stand. Today or tomorrow, we will be receiving an entirely new server. Not a single component (i.e. SCSI controller, hard drive, etc.). We are getting an entirely new system with 100% of the components being new. Rather than playing the hardware shuffle any longer, it was decided to simply replace the entire box and leave nothing more to chance. The server will be down during the course of the day today (01/14/02) and possibly tomorrow as well depending on how things go in the data center. We should then be back online and everything should be good to go from that point on. I feel I must address the rumors that people like to start about Stratics dropping off the map and how we had a good run as if were packing our bags and closing shop. Nothing could be further from the truth. Weve simply had a very difficult situation with new hardware and a much less than responsive host with regard to support and turn-around times. Trust me when I say that wed not be remaining with this host if it were not in our best interest at this time. This recent bout of hardware issues with our new server does not mean were going away or closing the network. On the contrary, we have a lot of exciting new plans for 2002 and were not going anywhere except forward. So when you see a post on some site stating that were closing our doors... keep in mind that they never came to us to find out the facts of the situation. No one posting such comments have. I want to once again apologize to everyone for the inconvenience our downtime may have caused you, but we will be fully up to speed again shortly. This server replacement should address everything. By the way, while the main web server is being replaced, please do visit our forums. Maybe people have not even realized that even when the primary web server was down, our other servers have been online and running great. Our forums are available: http://boards.stratics.com. We all understand it may take a couple weeks of being back before some are fully convinced, but thats okay. Well be here. ;) Regards, Jhariden Stratics |

The small lizard clung tightly to its upside-down, rocky incline. Something odd was happening in its great cavern. Its heart began to pump faster as it skittered up the angled slop, into a small crevice in the ceiling. Hanging some fifty to sixty feet above the cavern floor, it stared intently at the source of its disturbance. An orange glow flickered from down a tunnel which opened up into the cavern. It took some time for the lizard to remember what this was. It had not seen this in a long time. It was called "light". Wafting through the passage, were more disturbances which were nearly foreign to its surroundings. First echoed in vibrating noises, which it finally remembered was humanoid speech. Following was a horrible stench which began to billow into the lizard's huge lair. Humanoids were indeed near. Entering cautiously, dark, muscular and bulky humanoids entered the cavern. The small reptile knew that it had been a long time since it had ever seen humanoids, but these were ones it had never seen before. Their skin was dark black, almost like obsidian. In most every other respect, they looked like the green skinned beings which he knew as "orcs". These "dark orcs" slowly began to make their way across the cavern floor. They walked single file and seemed to be well disciplined in their movements. They were indeed warriors. A hunting party perhaps? A dark orc at the front of the column, apparently the leader then turned and spoke to those that followed him. "Mur Glim! Mur Glim! Zump'n ub here!" As a protective measure, the lizard willed its scale's colors to match the rock it hid within. It seemed quite confident that it could not be spotted, yet being extra careful seemed prudent with these beings. Each held a weapon of some sort, and they seemed ready to use them at a second's notice. As the lizard turned its head to better listen to the humanoids, a tiny emerald in a charm worn around the lizard's neck, flickered a small glow. The speech of the dark ones, was now within its capability of discerning. "Looks like large bones or something ahead." declared the leader. A few more torches were lit, and the dark orcs advanced. They soon discovered the remains of the dragon which once resided in the cavern. "Hope there's no more of these ahead." spoke one of the dark ones with a slight smirk. Many nods from his fellow troopers quickly followed. "The map leads to that wall", the leader proclaimed. On closer inspection, they realized the wall, was in fact a cave-in. Many looks of disappoint were evident. Some of the dark orc troopers began taking off their packs as if they were about to sit and rest. The lizard noticed that they were very dreary looking and were certainly in need of not only a good rest, but also some sleep. "Don't even think about it. Shovels and pick-axes. Now!", exclaimed the leader. It was obvious that the other orcs were not happy about this order, but none seemed ready to challenge the leader. Out came shovels and pick-axes, and the work began. It had been many decades since the lizard had last smiled, and perhaps several centuries since it last saw daylight. Its entrapment in this lair had indeed been long, but alas, an end was near. After several hours of excavation, it was obvious this would be no quick chore. Alas, the orc leader ordered for food to be prepared and to prepare a camp. The orcs ate, slept and returned to work. They seemed quite industrious. While taking a short break, the leader began examining the remains of the once great wyrm. The dark orc leader suddenly stumbled and nearly tripped on something, that his foot got caught up in the dirt. After saying a few curses which the magic charm did not translate well, the dark one dug in the dirt. Just as torchlight began glinting off the surface of the find, the lizard suddenly remembered what it was. The lizard now cursed. It knew it should have buried it, but it assumed neither the blade nor itself would be found again. A few of the miners now turn to look at what their leader was extracting from the ground. A sword. A large sword with magical runes engraved in it. The leader grinned widely at his new found treasure. "It seems our venture into this new land has brought us a gift.", said the dark one's leader. He looked down at the remains and then back at the sword. A very nice gift indeed! Although the swords magical purpose was unknown, it seemed quite evident what it was created for. Dirt and grime from the ages had caked all over the blade, yet no rust was present. The leader called forth a grunt, and told him to clean it, until it was immaculate. The others, continued on with their task. "Is that one of the artifacts we are looking for?", asked one of the dark orcs. "No", was the leader's reply. I doubt finding the artifacts of Ka'Gron will be this easy. Should it not be a good blade, it will at least make a fine sacrifice to Ka'Gron. It was almost as if a magical fire had been ignited within the chamber, when the first ray of sunlight penetrated through the rubble. The light from the ray burned at the lizard's eyes. Many centuries it had been since it last saw such a sight. After several more hours the dark orcs finished their crudely made tunnel through the hard packed stones and dirt. As the leader led the troops forward, he heard him proclaim the land in the name of Ka'Gron. "Finally, we have made it to the new land! Now, our mission may begin. Glory to Ka'Gron! Death to Kor!" The dark orcs began surveying the new land. The stuck to the mountain's edge and vanished beyond the lizard's line of sight. Slowly, the reptile crept his way to the newly formed exit. The light was still blinding, but it was anxious to see what the outside world looked like. It rested in the entrance for several hours, soaking up the sun with its eyes closed. As the sun started to set, the small lizard then became mobile once again. It scoured the horizon, looking for reference points. Seeming confident in its direction sense, it scampered off to the south. "Master will be most interested in this turn of events.", it whispered to itself. To be continued... |

Second Gamespy UO:LBR Dev Diary |
Gamespy released the second part of their developer diary about UO:Lord Blackthorn’s Revenge. In this issue Tom “Evocare” Chilton is talking about “New Player Experiences”. Here is a snippet: When we began to dissect our new player experience and view it as a series of basic steps and experiences, we quickly identified several elements ripe for enhancement. The approach of dropping players into the world and expecting them to know how to (or want to) immediately create their own entertaining experiences within the game world simply did not work for the majority of new players. However, the issue becomes more complex in light of the fact that games such as Ultima Online are geared to provide a multitude of different ways to play the game -- all of which are determined by the player. This is what creates the open-ended style of play and ultimately provides the depth of the game allowing for the long-term lifecycle of these games.Read the full diary here. |

Hint on Fast Moving NPC Vendors |
On the MyUO Discussion Boards , Greywolfe (Online Community Moderator) gave this hint on buying for npc’s that keep moving around:
I don't know if this will help. If I know where a vendor is "supposed" to be when s/he sells something, but I know that s/he lettered in Track and Field, I position myself near that location, even if the vendor is a good distance away. Then I type in "vendor buy" without hitting the enter key. I single-click the vendor to bring up the context menu and select the "buy" option. When the vendor snaps into place next to me, I hit the enter key. Voila! Simple, one-stop shopping. :) |

Biting The Hand: MMOGs |
I guess I don’t have to tell anyone about Jessica Mulligan or her articles at Biting The Hand. But her latest article deals with MMOGs and I guess everyone should have a look a look it. Here is a snippet: And you had to listen very carefully to your players. In those days, the average access fee was over $5.00 an hour; if you willy-nilly nerfed something in the game, the players let you know by first screaming loudly and then voting with their feet. We’d huddle together at GEnie’s Sysop conferences, exchange information on what worked and didn’t, tell war stories, and joke and laugh. We laughed a lot in those days. And innovated. And had fun, because dammit, it’s the game industry and games are supposed to be fun.Read the full article here. |

Pumpkin Pie, Anyone? |
While attending Impy's auction this week, I was quite suddenly reminded of why I had come..
As I turned to scan the room, I noticed the small group that stood out from the rest with their orange robes and green hats. Noting that they seemed lost in thought, I did not disturb them. Soon enough, more people began to arrive and fill the empty seats. The Followers of The Great Pumpkin had placed pumpkins around where they sat. But no soon as the pumpkins were set down were they gobbled up by the hungry auctioners. It seemed I was not alone in noticing the oddly dressed group. Taunts of "Pumpkin pie anyone?" could be heard echoing off the stone walls. Even this did not seem to phase the group. They continued to hand out pumpkins and stay in almost perfect silence, as if in prayer. Unfortunately, I was called away before the auction had ended and did not get a chance to speak with the group. Perhaps I will see them another time. |

"Swords of Darkness" Quest - Anna's Tale |
I recieved today, via messenger, a tattered scroll. It was in the hand of a lady named Rose Bush. I began reading with horrid fascination, it seems the Swords of Darkness are corrupting even the sweetest of our lands...
She sat before me, her tiny frame shuddering with a mixture of elation and great fear. An odd combination I thought to myself. But there she was, deep green eyes flashing with pride, her usual tanned skin pale. Her golden armor polished brightly, the kilt of deep green fastened tightly about her waist with a small emerald pin. Her locks of dark shadowy gray. I waited patiently for her to speak, watching her silently. Her hand was firmly around her pack, fingers grasping with such a grip that her knuckles were fairly white. Here the scroll was torn, I asked the messenger if he had damaged it in anyway. He shook his head, "Milady Rose says there will be more to come, she needs time to put it all to paper milord". I dismissed him... So the most powerful of all the swords is in the hands of an innocent. Will this young girl be hunted down? What is her connection with the kind old man? I wait in anticipation for my next letter from Lady Rose Bush. |

No Guns in UO |
In an e-mail group, Calandryll responded to a concern that UO may someday put guns in the game:
There won't be any. :)Calandryll expressed some fictional logic behind that statement:
Actually, there is a very good fictional reason for the lack of guns. Technology exists as a way for us to do things that we cannot do (or wish to improve on) with our own innate abilities. With a machine gun, I can kill more people (sorry for the reference) than I can with my bare hands. But, in UO we live in a world where virtually anyone can learn magic, allowing him or her to cast fire and lightning from their hands and even create earthquakes! Why would anyone bother making a gun when they can do that!? |

Calandryll on Using Player Ideas |
On the MyUO Discussion Boards, Calandryll responded to a thread about the development team using player suggestions:
We use player ideas all the time. The problem with a ruling council from players votes is there is no way to make sure Sir Pimpsalot doesn't win. and….
Oh, I have taken suggestions made by one player with no huge public support simply because I thought it was a good idea that I thought fit with what we are doing. That's my point. Majority doesn't always rule. Sometimes the idea that gets burried in the slew of other topics is better than the one that may have hundreds of people behind it.. And…
Like I said, we have taken notice and scenario 2 had tons of stuff in it from player suggestions. Stuff like the in-game books, the sub-skill craftable books, some of the monster AI, and even the arcane clothing was based on a player idea. Sometimes I read an idea that I really like but it doesn't fit with the fiction. Other times I read a fantastic idea, but it's far too large of a system for us to implement at this time. And other times I read an idea that I disagree with (like anti-virtues) and I explain why in those cases. and…
I'll admit I am not a big fan of making a design, coding it, testing it, etc that only one person will benefit from. We did have an idea early in the scenario 2 design to create a plaque with all of the names of the players that helped (and we'd have to design what "helped" entailed exactly), but some code and time issues forced us to scrap it. I still think something like that could solve the issue you are talking about though but it's a little (actually, a lot) more difficult than we first thought it would be. When asked about how the design team works…
When we brainstorm, yea, it's pretty much like that. But, we eat tim-tams and tater-tots though. ;) |

Filling Potion Kegs Directly |
For those alchemists who miss being able to fill a potion keg directly, Vex commented in an e-mail group:
On a shard where Publish 15 is active, you can make potions directly into a keg. You must have a keg that already has at least one of the desired potions in it in the top level of your backpack, and an empty bottle. An empty keg won't work, and you must have the bottle. When you make a potion, the game searches kegs directly in your backpack (not any subcontainer) for any that already contain potions of that type. If the keg can hold one more potion, then the potion just made immediately goes into the keg and the bottle is returned. |

Prescence of Evil at the HG Tower |
The tower chamberlain, Angus McTaggart, awoke from a terrifying nightmare. In the nightmare, a tall man with an unnatural paleness had leapt oh him, throwing him backwards on the ground. Angus tried to get up, but the man had him pinned and was sitting on his chest. It took all of his effort to draw in a breath as the weight of the man pressed down on him. The man's eyes seemed to glow and look right through his soul. The man's mouth opened, revealing four long fangs. Angus screamed and found himself awake. But yet, for a moment, the oppressive weight on his chest remained as a shadowy form seemed to dissipate before his eyes. After a few moments, Angus was breathing again, and realized there was nothing in the room with him. |

PAS Gold Caravan Rides Again |
Perusing the Sonoma Message Board, I ran across a tidbut of interesting news. King David, after a wildly fun and violent caravan experience, has decided to repeat it. If at first you don't get your pack horses to Vesper, try try for Brit! Due to popular demand, I am continuing the Gold Caravan series of events. I know that many bad guys took a lot of counts, mostly from non Caravan members it seemed, so Ill warn everyone again that murder counts are always possible. Thanks KD! |

Layna's Rescue |
A few days ago, Layna, a girl of 12 years was kidnapped by a marauding party of Severed Head Orcs in Spiritwood and taken to their cursed town Nohkmahr. Steveo, always being the one holding his protective hand over the young girl, immediately sent out scouts to investigate the whereabouts of the kidnapped girl. Apparently, as the scouts later reported, the poor girl was prepared to be sacrificed to the orcish Bloodgod in a hideous and gruesome ritual in only a few days time. Upon arriving in the town of Dreamstone the army grew even larger and singing songs of battle we marched towards the encampment of the orcish horde at their fort. From within the fort we heard them singing and mocking us, but determinate to free the poor girl the army rode on, closing in on the fort and their doomed inhabitants. Kind regards |

Calandryll on Fiction and More |
Calandryll answered a lot of fiction, game and service questions a player had on this thread on the UO.com-boards:I'll address the ones here that I am responsible for or know about. While I know you say you only represent the GL group, I have to make my response keeping in mind the entire community. :)Also in the same thread Calandryll continued about Blackthorn: Actually, no, that was on purpose. Showing someone as a villian before you learn their motivations for becoming such is a very standard fictional practice. Did we learn Darth Vader's motivations before he appeared on the screen? Nope, he just showed up and started choking people. His story wass told over time...as will Blackthorn's. |

Dark Forces defeated near Britain |
Grave news happened on January 7th near the city of Britain. Demonic forces apparently assaulted the City from the nearby graveyard... but let me start at the beginning. In the early afternoon smiths were working at the newly redecorated northern smithy, next to the bardic college, when suddenly a few lesser undead were following a brave adventurer into the city. The first few skeltons were quickly dispatched by the guards, but as soon as more - and more dangerous - enemies appeared, the guards apparently ended their shift, or were on lunchbreak... no response whatsoever. Luckily some of the customers and smiths took up arms and dispatched those - and the less proficient in fighting employed the valuable tactic of running screaming, and calling for help. Fighers and Mages alike were met at the graveyard by a towncrier cowering in fear. First waves of undead, ranging from skeletons to mighty lich lords were swarming the graveyard. As soon as those were brought under control by the heroic Britannians, though, even more problems appeared. Balrons - the feared lords of the demonworld - materialized out of thin air, in pairs and later in even larger numbers. The source of this troubles seemed to be a stone gateway - for lack of a better word - covered with a swirling vortex of colors. With the demonic hordes and undead loosing ground at every corner - at least we hope they did - a fearsome demonic lord apparently tried a last ditch attempt of saving the day. Stepping out of the vortex, it began to claim lives left and right. Even the mighty dragons brought to battle seemed to not concern the lord overly... Strong magics and suicidal melee eventually did take down even this monstrosity, of course, but the death toll was harsh. The town crier seemed mightily pleased, yet did not relocate to a safer area. In conclusion: Heartfelt thanks to all those who did help defeat this threat to Britannia, even though we are lacking the spiritual men and women willing to sacrifice some of their own to defeat and redeem the undead so far. A word of warning to the people around the graveyards, of course. Those places never were completely safe, and with this new threat we ought to tread carefully. And some protest: Were where the guards, when the local population did need them most? Hiding, drinking and being generally lazy, we presume. Have a pleasant day Yours |

Results of Rivendell's Tournament of Champions |
Blades were clashing, words of power were being shouted, and the scent of In Nox was heavy in the night air this past Saturday at Rivendell's fighting arena. Many people fought valiantly, and skillfully, in this final round of the Tournament of Champions, which has been an ongoing series of battles since earlier this autumn. The battles were one-on-one, with a pleasant mixture of melee tactics and magery. As the night wore on, the bodies of the defeated contestants were hauled out of the arena, and ghosts were returned to life, some of them to fight again. Alkan the murderer lingered at the edge of town, killing the pets that were stabled there. It was a fun night. Here are the results of the Tournament of Champions Grand Finale:
Geryon was awarded a check for 1,000,000gp for earning the title of Tournament Champion. Rivendell's new Mayor, Shanna, presented the Champion with the award at a short ceremony in the town square. Overall, it was an enjoyable event, and I look forward to attending future PvP events in Rivendell and elsewhere! |

Europas most famous Blacksmiths shop recently got a makeover courtesy of IGM Talos. What was once a lone anvil and small forge. Warning to Travelers |
A pigeon landed on my window ledge last eve. Tied to its leg was a small note from a fellow I know by the name of Rath of HSS. Seems that his guild was transporting some goods down to one of their new guild houses near Skara when they were attacked by a group of URK. The message was sent from the battlefield as they lay siege to the URK Fort. “To my friend, our convoy has been attacked. Warn all travelers.” Realizing the URK had not had an uprising in quite some time. I felt I should investigate. Donning my traveling cloak, tossing a few regents in my pack and grabbing an extra quarterstaff I headed out the door. Uttering the power words to a spell I transported myself to the moongate in Skara Trammel. Stepping in and crossing to the dead lands I glanced around, seeing no one I cast yet again. Arriving at East Bank in Brit, knowing full well that if I did arrive to the URK Fort I would be required to pay a tribute to ensure my safety. I made a withdrawal that I felt would cover my head and headed out. Casting one last time I arrived at the guild house for the Cvn, a group that had supported me for some time and provided me with security from time to time. Checking inside I found their guild mistress Ariyana Sune, who was willing to travel with me with the understand she may need to leave as her guild had a long standing war with the URK. She produced a magical gate, which I stepped thru, emerging at the URK Fort. Watching cautiously, picking my way carefully closer for a better vantage point I watched. Rath’s boys were in rare form. Running quickly and swiftly. Leaving dead URK’s here and there as they moved. Several of the attackers also were killed. Their horses immediately slaughter and skinned by the Fort dwellers. Then I was spotted. Apparently one of the clan’s chieftains from the markings it wore. As I had expected, in broken kingdom speech, they demanded tribute. I displayed my gold and offered it. They took it greedily and thank me for my “shiney’s”. I moved around a bit more, feeling a bit freer. Finding a recently fallen breeder, a female URK that is committed to a male in the clan, I offered aid. Hoping to ask a few questions while I administered the bandage. That is when things turned badly. A male URK approached, spouting profane words and insulting me repeatedly. Instead of drawing a weapon I walked away. That is when the arrow hit my back. I was quickly surrounded by URK, a tactic known as “krimping” by the clan. Unable to move, I was trapped and quickly dispatched. After returning to the living and gathering what few things I had left on my corpse. I happened to catch the glance of Ariyana again. She had also been slain in battle. She opened another gate, which I was forced to use, as my supplies seemed to have gone missing. With this latest uprising by the URK, it might be best for travelers to be weary in and around the area of Skara Brae in Felucca. |

PAS Caravan Attacked! |
Last Friday, around 70 members of PAS, OOD, related guilds and non-guild affiliated good guys gathered in Trinsic to attempt to escort the PAS caravan from Trinsic to Vesper and back again. The caravan, boldly led by King David himself, consisted of pack horses and llamas carrying locked chests filled with gold, empty decoy packies, and the caravan's defenders. Thieves flocked to Trinsic even before the caravan left, and more than one was guard whacked for attempting to steal goodies while the caravan was still under British's protection within the walled city. Just outside the city gates, independent herds of thieves stampeded all about the defenders, and only a few steps from the guard zone the first organized attack took place, as Gruumsh One-Eye (He Who Never Sleeps) led an attack by an unruly herd of ORK orcs.
CURD !! Gruumsh nub get eny shineez. Mebbe next week." Farther up the road, guilds of thieves and brigands like DP and military based guilds like ZOG were carefully constructing roadblocks. The thieves were hoping to trap the caravan in pincers where they could not escape little thieving fingers. The military types simply wanted to pause them long enough to overwhelm them in a frontal attack. A little farther up, in Golgotha, the ranks of Lich Lord Vecna's undead waited with terrible patience, having vowed that PAS would not be allowed to pass unchallenged through their territory. Unfortunately the caravan never made it that far up the road. Before they reached the first bridge, the packies had all gone to their eternal reward and the defenders, left with nothing to defend, turned back. Bacci (Khaldun Proprietress) disapproved of the Premature Attackulation that took place right outside the Trinsic gates, saying, "According to me scout, people was gettin guard whacked. I'm sure it be no fun fer the people that be guarding DPs future gold. Let caravan get a bit O' distance afore ye be attackin." Harmony (Shewiff of Wong) added, "The inexpewienced wootews did not wait to attack. This awowed the Cawavan Pwotectows a chance fow an easy wetweat." Even though the caravan had returned to Trinsic, all was not quiet on the long road Vesper. For a long time after, mercenaries, thieves, and members of various guilds used the road to pick up a little extra loot, settle long held grudges, or just indulge in a bit of bloodletting. I did hear that after the last of the dust had settled, Grog (Prince of Buc's Den) smelled blood and possibly some easy pickins. He showed up with some of the shadier members of the Saurian Gathering, but the long journey caused his group to miss the bulk of the excitement. King David of PAS says the caravans will continue, hopefully for the full 20 weeks. He is even considering upping the gold the packies carry to 150K for next week's caravan. King David understands that such a tempting array of loot is irresistible to those of low moral character. He has made PAS and OOD members swear not to hold attackers accountable for their actions when they attack the caravan. He adds that each week, the defenders strategy will change, main git a little tougher for would-be looters to snag PAS gold. On an OC note…Those who would attack the caravan should remember that while PAS and OOD have sworn a blood oath to avoid branding as murderers those who attack the caravan, people who are not in those guilds have sworn no such oath and may not follow the rules. People who choose to attend the event are asked to not give out murder counts, but may feel no obligation to do so. Murder Blue non-PAS and non-OOD at your own risk. |

HIding/Invisibility Work in 3D Now |
A couple of weeks ago I posted a suggestion here for everyone to try out the UO Third Dawn (3D) client with Lighting turned OFF [In the Options menu, near the bottom of the Display section]. The purpose of turning this off is that it adds considerably to the coloring and vibrancy of the graphics when it isn't active. But, as many pointed out, turning this option off also made it so that you couldn't tell whether or not your character was Hidden or Invisible. But thanks to Lady Malynn (and my own testing), I'm happy to report that Hiding and Invisibility now work with this feature turned off! With the addition of the mip-mapping in the 3D client to help clean up much of the Third Dawn artwork, I would again suggest to all players to try the client out again with this feature off and see what you think. With rumors of new Human artwork coming out soon too (as can be seen in recent pictures of the new Dawn character), UO3D is really shaping up. Below shows the change in appearance now, using Hiding:

"Free Web Cams" pop-up being removed |
Yesterday we were unpleasantly surprised with a very annoying advertisement that popped up on the various Stratics web sites front pages. Many of you complained about the inability to close the advertisement, and the site it inevitably leads to. Needless to say; those type of ads are not the ones we're willing to show. Stratics does not directly control the content of the advertising we're currently running because the ads are managed through a third party. We do not currently have the ability to screen all advertisements before they appear on our pages. We are working on a means to manage all such ads in the future, but at the present time, we can only react, right along with the rest of our viewers, when such offensive advertising appears on our pages. We have repeatedly asked for such ads to be screened from our rotation but our advertising host has not been fully attentive to these requests. They do tend to act quickly when we approach them about particular ads and the current ad that has so many people in an uproar is being removed. |

The Quest of Tribble - Stormhaven's Little Scamp |
He had been both a plaque and a source of rare amusement to her father's family for generations out of memory. He was worse than any dragon for collecting that which sparkles or glows - gems, gold, jewelry of all shapes and sizes, affectionately called his "sparklies" - though where he kept his hoard, if indeed he had one has remained a mystery. She was sure she'd escaped his attention in the City, which she herself had built. But it was not to be. She had the box not more than a minute... clear gold and crystal-studded clasps. What was inside, she did not know. She had not even had the time to open it after receiving it in gratitude from the assembled citizens of Stormhaven. But now it was gone. Disappeared from its honored place atop the fishtank. |

It seems Grog, Prince of Bucaneer's Den, and leader of S?G has obtained the Katana of Tribulation. The Katana is one of the Swords of Darkness that Lich Lord Vecna is searching for.
The place is a villa located on a forest road, near the archway connecting Buc's Den to the mainland. This villa is called Ssellous Manor, and has been the home of a Black Guard named Willow Steele for many years. But the Black Guards are gone, and Willow Steele now rides with the Saurien Gathering, led by Grog, a rogue once loyal to B^G.It seems as though Lich Lord Vecna and his army (=G=) were distracted by their recent war with the ZOG Empire. Has this allowed the Saurien Gathering the opportunity to get the upper hand? |

Lord Dormax the Grey has even been seen conversing with a black lich lord, though his very heart quailed to see such a dark and terrible visage before his own. He now bids the players of Baja to take up arms and reagents and meet him at the Counselors’ Guild Hall within the fair city of Trinsic in Trammel at precisely 6 o’clock PST (7 MST; 8CST; 9EST) on Friday, Jan 4. More details of the battle to free Elminster will be given then. The New York Times on MMORPGs |
MMORPGs made New York Times. The New York Times article, “Expansion Sough for Online Games,” by Bob Tedeschi compares the market potential of online games to PC and console games. The article expresses skepticism that online fantasy games will have as large a market potential as predicted last year. For those interested in customer numbers, the article contained this bit of information:
The Ultima Online game by Electronic Arts, the No. 2 paid online game, has just 235,000 active users, who each spend about $10 a month for the privilege of logging on. The most popular title is EverQuest by Sony, whose 400,000 users pay similar monthly fees. |

Year of the Horse! |
To celebrate the new year, a temple called "The Virtue Annex" has been built in one of Britain's western farm fields. It is not, however, the one that was used for the western guard. A farmer volunteered to stand guard at that particular field so as not to let anyone build anything there, giving the field time to recover from the last event. The temple has some of the appropriate decorations outside the gates, with some red and white tiles spelling out "celebrate" on the ground. Inside, the temple has the usual donation box, along with the large bell one rings after dropping money into the box. Since 2002 is the year of the Horse, there is also a horse in the back, near the ankh. To the east, there is a table lined with books into which the people of Britannia may record their hopes and resolutions for the new year. Happy New Year! ^^y |

Further Comments on Bulk Order Deeds |
On this thread on the official UO Boards here, Hanse made the following comments on bulk order deeds :Mining is not connected to the bulk order deeds and their color selection (if you have sufficient skill to get a colored deed - 70 and up). and We haven't made a decision on any other bulk order systems. The information we have logged from the current implementation is looking very promising and can be used, if we do add on to it. :) |

King David and PAS to Caravan Gold from Trinsic to Vesper |
If you are a pack horse, may I suggest you retire now and head for the hills? King David of PAS just sent in some news that will have Packies everywhere quivering in their iron shoes. KingDavid of PAS (People's Army of Sonoma) is pleased to announce the first of (hopefully) many gold caravans for Sonoma. There are some Brave Souls in PAS. Brave souls indeed. This event is sure to attact the more unsavory element, and where they go, can the bounty hunters and detectives be far behind? As long as no one alerts the ASPCA, this could be an action "packed" Road Trip! |

Reflections of Barth: Mortality and Orfleur Flowers |
Mortality and Orfleur Flowers There comes a time in every young man's life when he needs to set out for a little bit of adventure. This little story took place on such a day for me when I was very young. Before the lands split into Trammel and Felucca. The sun was bright, the birds were chirping and the orfleur flowers were in full bloom. As I walked the streets of my home town of Vesper, it seemed that even the road was beckoning me to stray out of the city limits. Stopping at the bank and storing a few items, such as most of my loose gold, for safe keeping; I stepped to the edge of the causeway. A very deep breaths later I began across. My trusty War Hammer crafted by Anvil in my hand and a few loose pieces of leather and studded leather armor covering my body. Looking both ways as I reached the far end of the bridge, I breathed a sigh of relief as I not a soul could be seen. Quickly making my way down the road I came upon two small shops I did not know had existed. It seemed that the city limits were extended a bit farther than I had known. Stepping into the tailor shop I found just the perfect thing, a feathered hat! Back to the road with my purchase proudly on top of my head a tune filled the air as I whistled. Quite honestly I had hoped the whistling might scare off any would be adversaries. But no such luck. Right on the edge of town I heard the sobbing of a woman in desperate need. Rushing straight into the woods with out a second thought I found myself face to face with a highwayman. Well actually, a highwayWOman. As she had lured to out of the safety of the town with her alluring voice and cries for help. After a moment of staring at each other. Me sizing her up. Her sizing me up. It was decided that I should run. As I did. A moment after turning my head and starting the 100 rod run to town I found that my leather armor seemed to have a hole in it. Just about the same time I realized so did my flesh. Looking over my shoulder I could see the fletching of an arrow sticking out. With no time to pause and admire the handy work of the craftsman I fell to my knees. A moment later all went grey to me. As I stood looking back on my former self, I could see the orfleur flowers were in full bloom and the sun was brightly shining. But I, was not in the mood to be adventurous. |
