A Sad Night in Magincia | ||
Posted on Thursday, November 29, 2007, 7:21 PM EST by Lady Tia (LakeSuperior)
A Sad Night in Magincia According to history, New Magincia, the City of Humility is going to be built on the ashes of the Old Magincia, the City of Pride. In the past, the citizens of Magincia have experienced the sensation of too much money. The beautiful city held ornate buildings. The shops with many columns to provide places to inlay gemstones and gold. The shop signs were lettered in real silver. It’s a sad night in Magincia, even the NPCs have vanished, run for their homes, hopefully somewhere deep in the forests of Britannia. Bankers gone, medics gone, no one left in Magincia except for a few still seeking to make more destruction. With yet a few more citizens trying to help and rebuild in the best way they know how. Thank you Brother Wilham. And thank you Taeara for being there every day rezing and healing all the players trying to still defend the city. The majority of the city is destroyed, with the exception of the Parliament Building which still stands almost pristine, as it too is littered with debris from the surrounding buildings. The 3 houses on the beach are thankfully still standing. The painters shop still stands with but one corner damaged despite the continued efforts of the citizens of Sosaria to bring the light deamons in to destroy it. But truly will it be the City of Humility, or will it be known as the City of Greed, as it seems that the city falls to purely Greed. Maybe that should be a new virtue….. Will there be a new Magincia? Only time will tell.

Big Angry Josher and the Very Important Players!
Posted on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, 9:00 PM EST by EricksonYates (Atlantic)
Jingle, Jangle, Jumble, Jump! Erickson Yates here! I am already finished with my first night of research in Felluca! I decided that for my first foray into the world of an Atlantic Reporter, I would go straight to the top. I decided to search out the man who sees over the Very Important Players! That is right, Big Angry Josher himself. I spent a little time with Josher, tossing him a few questions so that those of us not in the know could learn about about how the men and women on the dark side live. At first, I tried to track the man down...well I found him, but this is what I saw before I could ask him anything! After that, I got him to not kill me again! He agreed to get a few of his mates together and have a little stand up interview with me. It was a pretty good time...until the ending!
Erickson Yates: I have a few questions for you. Nothing overly hard or trying because I know you are a very busy man with all the killing that needs to be done and all. First question: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: In all seriousness, rumors about beepers are a bit outlandish. It's a game, each of us plays when we can. We do send mass icq's when we have a big raid coming up. Sometimes not everyone is in vent. Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Big Angry Josher: Erickson Yates: Ha, he, hi, ho, hu! It was a pretty crazy interview. I spent the whole time expecting to die! There they were, sitting there watching me ask these questions to their big boss man.
I thought I was going to make it out alive...I thought WRONG!
OOooOOOooOOoooOOooOOOoooOOO! (This is Erickson Yates, signing off!)

This will be fixed shortly. (Storing cloth in the salvage bag will simply get it cut into bandages, so... don't do that if you don't want bandages.)

Happy 9th Anniversary, MTB!
Posted on Monday, November 26, 2007, 5:23 AM EST by Medea (Drachenfels)
Last saturday evening one of the oldest community of Drachenfels was able to celebrate it's 9 years anniversary! The guild of the Miliz der Templer des Baphomet (MTB) had invited the citziens to commemorate their jubilee with a tournament at the harbour of Trinsic. As it was well organised, several guests had joined the party in the beautiful city. The tournament was opened on time at the seventh hour, after the guild had prepared a gateservice from the west britain bank.
Numerous fighters who registered in advance were not able to join the battles, but because of the very sympathetic advertisment of the MTB members some other combatants could be found, and the fights soon began. The objective was to push your opponent out of his or her saddle, without delivering fatal wounds. The encounters however were grimly fought and some of the fighters had bruises and stains all over their body. At the end of the numerous battles the victourious combatants were established. It was Maresius, Faroll and An'Taris. Because the MTB had honoured their participating guests, they deferred to Faroll and An'Taris. They received one of the treasured cups which were provided with the official seal of the tournament. After the award ceremony the next tribute to the MTB members followed: Fjealda, the grandmaster of the guild, honoured their long lasting members. Following this ceremony, people gathered to chat about the evening and the fabulous tournament, past times and events. It was an evening to remember - probably in a year, when the 10th anniversary arrives, it will dwarf this tournament. Happy Birthday, MTB!
Happy Birthday, MTB! Farwell, auf bald!

Spotlight on... Fjealda (Drachenfels Interviews, Part 10)
Posted on Monday, November 26, 2007, 5:11 AM EST by Medea (Drachenfels)
The winterly friday afternoon was pretty sunny and dry as I rode on my loyal polar bear throughout the streets to Trinsic. Today I was going to meet Fjealda, grandmaster of the time-honoured guild of the Miliz des Tempel des Baphomet. Their community had announced tomorrow's festivities because of their ninth anniversary, which I was very interested in and wanted like to know more about. As I arrived in Trinsic, the blond Lady already waited for me. Shortly after that we travelled by moongate to the near southern woods of Trinsic. On the edge of the jungle was the location of the small castle of their order. We entered the well guarded building and made our way through the very nicely decorated house, up to the balcony. The view into the jungle was just wonderful. Fjealda began to talk about her and her guild. «My ancestor came to Sosaria a long time ago, this must be about nine years now but she left again soon. I came to the land three years later.» The guild itself originally split off from another group, the Ordo Templi Militaris, called OTM, off which later templar groups were formed into the MTB. «The official date is the 20th of december but we will celebrate our ninth anniversary with the citizens of Drachenfels tomorrow.» Although the MTB is a small guild, they always were a constant throughout the years on Drachenfels. Fjealda was very happy about this: «We do honour the past times, but we also like to celebrate the new ones.» Besides all duties MTB had to face in the town of Trinsic, the guildmembers have different interests. «I myself like to hunt with my bow, especially dragons - they are honorable opponents», the grandmaster smirked. «Of course I care very much for the town itself because I knew it for such a long time.» However, the nearby Magincia was also a task to protect for the members of the Miliz des Tempel des Baphomet. «Especially in times like these with a war around the corner we know what people expect from us.» She laughed as she loooked down from the balony into the small entrance hall: «That's why it looks somewhat cluttered here, the war leaves it's marks.» Fjealda stood up and suggested that I follow her. The library, through which we reached the balcony, was crammed with writings, books and ancient scrolls. She unerringly paved her way through the shelfs and in the bright candlelight pointed to some thick, red bound books. «I also actually write an encyclopedia, named the 'Magica Britannica'. It was lost some years ago, but now the first six new volumes are finished - bilingual.» She walked on for a few meters. «And here, we have more books about my family and me.» Lost in thought she stroked the bindings and showed me a comfy corner for writers and readers, where we continued our discussion. «What I like most is the freedom to do whatever I like to do», she said, smiling. With a wide gesture she included the whole building. «To own is nice, but to have a community is better.» Those were very wise words, and to listen to them in the silence of the library was a stunning experience.

Lady Phoenix Wins Thanksgiving Eve Turkey Battles
Posted on Saturday, November 24, 2007, 8:46 AM EST by Morpheus Mardox (Chesapeake)
Thanksgiving Turkey Battles It was a fine evening to give thanks as competitors from across the realm gathered for the holiday edition of the chicken fight in Guardians Gate. The Coliseum was loud, cluttered in feathers, and had an odd odor as the famous yardbirds scratched and clucked about awaiting their turn in the ring. With such names as "Dark Meat" and " Ovenstuffer" I knew we were in for an evening to remember. Eleven hopeful bird owners registered including: Jamila, Ebenezer Wildweed, Courtland Bannock, Angus, and Daria Blackmoore all of the Royal Britannian Guards. Maila of the Fellowship of Virtue, Darth Silent of the United Sosarian Navy, Lady CaT of Yew, and last but not least Lord Nanoc of Dragons Watch. In a last minute substitution, Lady Phoenix of Dragons Watch took Nanoc's place in the event due to technical issues. Many great matchups took place some quick and decisive others down to the wire but none as dramatic as the finals. In the finals, Lady CaT along with Lady Phoenix both respectively arrived undefeated as their turkeys refused to loose dominating the competition. Deciding the evenings champion came down to a best of three matchup with Lady Cat winning the first over what most thought was the bird to beat in "TOMATD." Much to the crowds amazement it was the rubber match that proved to be quite possibly the best pet fight this reporter has ever seen. Back and forth both near death at times these two yardbirds battled it out for almost three minutes with no assistance before Lady Phoenix's eventual victory. The third round proved easy for Lady Phoenix as she dominated Lady CaT's offering. Congratulations to Lady Phoenix and all the participants for making the event one to remember.

A Snowy Scene of...Rubble?
Posted on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, 1:30 PM EST by Martyna Zmuir (GreatLakes)
As winter quickly approaches, I look out at Magincia from the roof of Lady Silverbrook’s estate and wonder what will become of the island city. Magincia no longer looks like the carefully carved miniature locked inside its representative from the collectible Snowy Scenes snow globe series. In fact, Magincia resembles a desolate wasteland more and more each day. Over fifty percent of the city’s buildings have been razed to the ground since the daemon invasion began, or as some people are calling it, divine retribution for the sin of Pride. However, the daemons are not entirely to blame. Granted, the strangely named ‘Light Daemons’ are directly linked to the destruction, it is some of the ‘defenders’ of Magincia that actually should be held responsible. Many of the so-called ‘defenders’ are luring the light daemons into Magincian buildings and manipulating the daemon into unleashing magical explosions that decimate the area. Why you might ask? For souvenirs! Yes, the Britannian citizenry has taken leave of their senses and patriotic duty so they may cart away packfulls of singed and broken building materials, house wares, and even local flora as well. These items had become like a drug to sum individuals, an irrational craving. I had been waiting a short while on the rooftop to interview Lady Silverbrook about the state of Magincia, for she was at the site of the Library surveying the damage. When she joined me, I asked her about the demonic invasion and the toll it was having. "As with any war, it pains one the most when it strikes close to home. Magincia has been my home for many years, as well as a place I have conducted both business and events for the community. The constant raging war is right outside my window, so-to-speak. I've been spending most of my time upon the Isle, both protecting others and defending what remains of the city from the onslaught of undead and demons." When asked about the demise of the Magincia Library & Museum, the largest repository of Seer artifacts on the shard, she smiled strangely at me and said the "Rumors of its demise were... exaggerated." She then pointed to the southeast behind me, when I turned, I was dumbstruck. The Library’s walls stood once again, unblemished. The roof of the tent out front flapped slightly from a gentle tradewind. I managed stutter out the question of how this managed to occur in the last few minutes, but she would only smile serenely and shrug her shoulders. Apparently, there was great magic at work. Getting back to the interview, I asked her of the apparent greed that the so-called defenders were exhibiting. A hard look came into her eyes. "In all fairness, it is something which I am torn by. When the attacks began, Magincia knew there would be destruction. They knew that the streets paved with gems, and the sandstone with its gold lining would be accosted. There were areas attacked early on that received extensive damage. We knew that is was a possibility. "What I did not expect, were those people that willingly took daemons into areas, that could and should have been salvageable, to allow those parts of the city to be decimated. It tears at me, the shouts and taunts that some said, to not kill the beasts and drive them further to the outreaches of the city to claim their treasures. I heard some state that 'no one came to Magincia anyways'. I find that disillusioning. While I understand wanting mementos of the fair city, it wounds me to watch the rampant destruction, merely for the sake of a few people’s own material needs. They are not simply collecting this 'rubble'... They are taking away precious memories from others, as well as destroying a cornerstone of Britannia. It is with heavy heart that I must admit to myself that some of those adventurers that came to Magincia are truly and possibly more dangerous to the future of the Isle than the daemons they fight. I have faith, in the end, those that used this war for their own base ends will receive their just rewards... still, it is difficult to comprehend why one would so callously be motivated by their own greed." That sentiment had been echoed by the High Council the night before, brought to the floor by the Minister of Virtue, Lord DaKaren. The result of their discussion led to the pledge from the Britannian Armed Forces to send troops into the city to fight the daemon hordes. Lady Silverbrook was pleased by the news, and wished to thank them and the other groups she witnessed actually fighting the Light Daemons. I asked what she saw in the future for Magincia, and if she thought the Crown would have the city rebuilt. Once again, the serene smile, yet with a far-off look in her eyes. "I foresee the time will come, that this will be over. I have faith that we shall persevere from these dark days. Do I have hope for a New Magincia? Of course. I think we shall see a day when we will truly go from a city known for its Pride, to one that has been touched by Humility. I hope that day comes... sooner than later, of course... but we all are tested, in our own ways. We simply must learn and grow stronger from that which attempts to usurp us." Before I left, she wished to add a personal message to the citizens, "To those who have honestly and willfully attempted to preserve and fight for Magincia's liberation, I give my thanks. What you attempt to do is no small feat, given the forces that ensnare the Isle. I am indebted to those who honestly sacrificed their own safety selflessly... the odds are indeed, at this time, overwhelming. "To them I say: Be well, and be safe." Before I headed back to my Library, I dashed to the restored Magincia Library and Museum, to see if it was truly returned. The sandstone was real, the furnishings were repaired. Debris still littered the ground floor and surrounding environs, but all mattered was as it had been before the invasion. I turned to leave, only to sigh with despair as a group of ‘defenders’ lured a light daemon into the southern wing. I giggled from my hiding spot when the daemon’s power exploded harmlessly against the now impervious Library. "Let them waste their time here, for it buys the rest of the city precious time..." I heard in my mind, Lady Silverbrook was in peak form today... Martyna Z'muir, LofS

In The Midst of Destruction….

In The Midst of Destruction…
ord Ash, with destruction reigning around him, diligently went about his business of using the rubble he found to build something amidst burning buildings, Demons of all kinds, and general chaos. It was impressive that someone thought of creating something good in Magincia. Later, on returning to the building site with pieces found for use on the building, no building was found. On asking Lord Ash what had happened, the answer was, “they came and took all the pieces, so I found these….” What Lord Ash built with next were the plants.
It is certain that all who have been to Magincia know what was found on returning to the site of creation rather than destruction later that evening.
In the midst of all we have seen of players this week, Lord Ash symbolizes the best of Sosaria and brings hope for this shard.

Skills & Professions Series: The Tamer
Posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, 10:26 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)
This game has gone through numerous changes and there are a number of professions one can follow. I thought I would focus on some of the more difficult ones to master and even legendary. This is the beginning of a series of articles on various skills and professions. From asking around, Taming has definitely become one of the more profitable professions as well as one of the most difficult to master. It also has received very little in the way of change, other than new animals to master. Nor has any of it's sister skills, like Animal Lore and Veterinary. In my quest to see how the people of Sosaria felt about this profession I began asking some key questions. My first was, what was the most difficult aspect of being a tamer? I got some great incite as to how people felt. The main response was that even though a skill should be difficult to gain in, the guaranteed gain system makes gain in this skill extremely slow, especially at higher levels. One person I spoke to Lady Clorissa Leaf and she had this to say about the gains, "My only complaint...is that I have not had a gain in two days." Her real skill is below 100 or Grand master level, and that is fairly slow. They higher you gain, the harder it is to acquire skill points. Lord Daz told me, " The most difficult part would be taming the more feisty of creatures. The rune beetle is one of the hardest tames to accomplish. The gold beetle is guarded well. Reptalions have a nasty bite. But then there is the patience and dedication that it takes to get to the top of the taming profession." The next thing I wanted to know was what was the main perk of having this skill. Everyone agreed here as well, that the ability to make money was the best part of it. Lord Walter said, "being a tamer is a VERY easy way to make mega gold." Gold definitely makes this world go around and I can see this as a definite bonus. The economy of Ultima Online is one of the things that make this game so wonderful. My last question was, what would you like to see change with taming and it's sister skills? I got some interesting thoughts and ideas for this one. Some players had some fabulous incite as well, Lady Gwyn Skyfire had this suggestion, " I would like to see more pet slots (i.e. be able to have two cu sidhes out of stable at same time and give them a pack instinct.)" Another great idea was being able to gain taming when using its sister skills, for example you gain when healing or resurrecting a pet and loreing animals. A lot of people would like to see rare breeds of animals, and not just colors, things that spawn extremely rare. Players also want more monsters and animals that are able to be tamed, things like shadow wyrms, gazers and elementals. The other big request was for more pet slots, a tamer can never have too many. One player suggested the ability to have a ranged heal with the veterinary skill, this would come in handy when fighting monsters that have area effect spells. In conclusion this was a very informative quest. I hope the developers take a look at some of the wants and suggestions of the players. To all those that were patient enough to answer my questions, I thank you for your help and cooperation. -Ishtar-

An unofficial report has been handed to me that Lake Superior has the least damage done to Magincia in Trammel facet compared to other shards. While I cannot confirm this with certainty, I have traveled to many other shards and have found this to seem to be the case as well. This is either great news to some or a source of pain to others but LS should be known for something and that is having a great community work together. Good luck to us all!

A Call to Arms in Magincia
Posted on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, 8:47 PM EST by Lady Katherine (Chesapeake)
Submitted for publication by Governor Winfield of the PaxLair Statehood: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 20, 2007
CALL TO ARMS -- MAGINCIA, CHESAPEAKE!!
Every Hour, Every Day
Until the Enemy is Driven Out of Existence! A Chesapeake Call to Arms meeting was held on Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at 9 PM ET in the only remaining building left standing in Magincia -- the Parliament Building across the bridges in SE Magincia (Trammel). Many people arrived. Governor Winfield of the PaxLair Statehood welcomed everyone and gave a speech.
Governor Winfield's Speech Governor Winfield said: Last week the Magincia buildings were intact and fortresses were built. We had supply lines and first aid stations. We had teams and strategies. Today, as you've seen by walking to this Parliament Building, Magincia is completely in ruins. Scholars and historians will certainly debate in days and months ahead about why Magincia fell to ruin right before our eyes. One common observation so far is this... that some people willfully and purposefully led the enemy into Magincia buildings to see those buildings destroyed. In my opinion, these people were not defenders of Magincia. They were destroyers and aided the enemy. I call these people "Rubblers"... because they sought only to take bits and pieces of Magincia home with them for their own personal gain, fortune, or status. Whether you like or dislike the Rubblers is your own personal choice. However, to pick up a piece of Rubble is not bad though. It is our history. It will be needed in museums to tell others what has happened in Magincia, so others may learn. However, now as the Rubblers are running out of Rubble to carry away, I still believe we have a job to do in this city. I do not know how long Magincia will be invaded. But for as long as it is, we have a duty to fight the enemy. Therefore tonight, I request and issue a continuing Call to Arms against the Enemy to push them back to the Moongate, starting with the furthest points within the city. If we do this, we may gain the shard-wide reputation of fighting the enemy when all seems to be lost. That we, Chesapeake, beat all the enemy back in sequence and let the Berserkers come upon us to meet their own deaths! Buildings maybe lost here, but the Spirit of Chesapeake is not! Who is with me? Who will fight all enemies in this city? Who will beat back that which destroyed our Magincia? [... more Statehood meeting business ...] We thank everyone for coming tonight. Defend Magincia!! Dragonspeed to you all!! Meeting is adjourned.
The meeting ended with a rally of defending forces inspired by Nevyn, the Guild Leader of the Royal Britannian Guard (RBG).

Will Origin Save Magincia?
ot looking too good at this point for Origin to save Magincia. The tailor shop is now gone and there is a gaping hole in the defense of the city. By courier we were given a map and help on how to push back the spawn to the moongate. But too late for that now. There is no moongate. There exists now a large rift.
All day yesterday and late into the night while others fought in strategy sections 5 and 6, some were successful at clearing section 4, killing Light Demons before they powered up and dealing with some back spawn. This was done in the midst of calls for Magincia to burn and to wait, let the demons power up thereby creating more rubble! Early today some brave troopers gathered for a concerted effort to try and push the spawn back according to the strategy of the sages. But others were intent on dragging light demons into buildings to create more rubble or artie hunting for their 30th Staff of Pyros. Will Magincia be saved? Or are the Originians helping to destroy this once fair city of the mages? To see how the other shards of the crystal are faring, visit an ethereal plane of discussion.

The Cove Conspiracy, Part II
Posted on Sunday, November 18, 2007, 4:37 PM EST by Martyna Zmuir (GreatLakes)
(Note: Please refer to Part I of this story, kindly posted for me by Zynia on 11/5/07) James Lawford was born in the Valorian Isles city of Jhelom 28 years ago. He was a slight lad, and didn’t fit the usual mold of a warrior-to-be; due to this, James was tormented by his peers. His parents, mercenaries by trade, were slain in battle with the Juka, leaving ten-year-old James an orphan. Unfortunately, this did not ease his persecution. At the age of twelve, James fell in with a local band of pickpockets and deftly learned to ply their trade. After James spent a few years on the streets, the Jhelom Guard cracked down on his gang. With most of his compatriots in jail or worse, James slipped through the moongate, desperate to survive. He soon found himself in a new city, Britain, a place where his reputation was, as yet, unsullied. Within days, however, the Royal Guard had him marked as a thief, and expelled from the city. Now an outcast, James wandered the northern roads as a brigand. After several years, James heard of Newcastle, the city which had sprung up around the castle of the Royal Knights of Redemption. He journeyed there, towards the unsuspecting town. This history, unknown to most Newcastle residents, might seem scandalous. For they know him as a mild-mannered farmer who moved there to work the rich farmland, and join a community based on the Virtues. They accepted his story, and welcomed him into their community. Even as the citizens grew on him, James lusted after the city’s treasury, awaiting his chance. Several months ago, James declared his candidacy for Mayor of Newcastle. Running unopposed, James’ election was a sure bet. Or it was, until he met Nosfentor, Shadowlord and leader of the Crimson Order... This brings us to the present. After the fall of Castle British, James’ attitudes changed. He sat in the gallery during the High Council meetings and openly scoffed at the running of the Kingdom. Brandishing a dagger, he flippantly told the Chancellor that she should surrender to the Crimson Order, as defeat was inevitable. He continued to mock the Grand Marshal and the Britannian Armed Forces throughout the meeting, and was eventually forced to leave...as a spirit. At the next High Council meeting, James was disruptive. Again, he espoused the rhetoric of surrender. This time, however, other Newcastle citizens were there to attempt to restrain his behavior. He became combative and actually slapped Prafectus Oona of the Royal Knight of Redemption across the face. Once more he was forced to leave the Council Hall, this time retaining his corporeal form. After searching for him for days, I located him skulking about the Newcastle Post Office. When I questioned him about his loyalties to the city, and to the Crown, he merely laughed. I asked him of his bid for the office of Mayor, in light of his recent political leanings, and he gave me a most disturbing reply, “The citizens of Newcastle are like sheep. If it weren’t for the wolves, the Knights, to keep them in order they'd scatter in this direction anyways...” I questioned his likening the residents to sheep, and he said, “Aye, nice fatted sheep!” When asked why the sudden change of allegiance, he smiled and quipped, “’Tis better at the right hand of the devil, then to stand in her path.” He went on, in a conspiratorial tone, that he stood to profit from the war by selling supplies and artifacts. Tokunese artifacts. He claimed this profit would, “Benefit my people immeasurably,” When asked who ‘his people’ are, his only response was to tap a tattoo in his right forearm, a black fist outlined in red. With that, he winked and melded into the shadows. Currently, James is in protective custody after his most recent disruption of the last High Council meeting. As before, he said Britannia should surrender to the Crimson Order or prepare to die. Chancellor Willa urged the Newcastle Councilor to have James taken to a healer, fearing that his mind may have been warped during his visit to Cove. Is James Lawford a traitor? A spy? Or is he just the latest casualty of Nosfentor’s unrelenting desire to see Britannia in ruins? Martyna Z'muir, LofS

War Stories: The Burning
Posted on Sunday, November 18, 2007, 1:42 PM EST by Lord Franklin (Catskills)
My friends, Magincia is burning. The Moongate, as Sahra recently wrote about, has been completely distorted. Surrounded by lighting and stretched toward the sky, the gate has become something out of a child's nightmare. The town itself is faring no better, with entire buildings being destroyed by the light demons we've been fighting for so long now. There is nothing but rubble left in so many areas... I fear it will be difficult, if not impossible, to restore the city to its once great beauty. The strongest of these light demons have an attack far more deadly than any we've seen in the land in a long time. If you are in the area when one summons forth its reserve of power to unleash this horrible onslaught, you will be blinded. You may even be instantly killed! Use great caution when fighting these demons. I am also dismayed to report that some of our citizens are using these Light Demons as moving bombs, trying to guide them to certain areas of town in order to blow those areas up. You see, once an area has been destroyed, pieces of whatever is left over can be picked up and carried off... Stay Safe. Lord Franklin

Magincia Invasion: A City Goes IDOC!
Posted on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 10:35 PM EST by Cymoril (Oceania)
When the dark shroud of this invasion fell over Magincia, we thought we knew what we were in for. For although we watched in horror as the daemons marched through the forests and town, and we did our best to fend them off, we truly could not have imagined the destruction that followed. The daemon corpses and a broken Moongate were the least of our worries. Magincia's Forests turned to cindering rubble. But how are the daemons doing this? There are several answers to that. The daemons' presence alone is enough to corrupt the moongate and the foliage, turning it to a charred mass. The buildings, however, are being destroyed primarily by the Light Daemons. Watch for particularly strong Light Daemons, and you will notice odd things happen as you are fighting them. Occasionally a smattering of white energy will be created by the daemon, which will then be followed by a devastating explosion, turning buildings to rubble! Sometimes these daemons will create a wall of white fire, which can also damage parts of buildings and plants beyond repair. What is being done to prevent the destruction of Magincia? While citizens have tried barricades, forts, archers and even cannons, adventurers come from all over Oceania to fight off the invading forces. It seemed to buy some time, but the barricades are now all but destroyed, and it would appear the only real defence is Offence. These daemons need to be slain and forced to retreat to the void from which they came! The end of this nightmare is surely near, but Will it end when we force the daemons to retreat, or will it end when there is simply nothing of Magincia left to destroy? Stay tuned for the final Magincia Invasion instalment: Rewarding our Efforts!

The Oceania Cup: A Jockey's Tale
Posted on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 8:48 PM EST by Cymoril (Oceania)
The Oceania Cup: A Jockey's TaleThe Oceania Cup, hosted by PoC, was held today at 12:30pm. Thanks to Amathist, PoC and the other helpers for this event! I allowed my tamer, Taelyn, to attend. Here is her story... Taelyn was enjoying a beverage in the mining town of Minoc when a large banner on the Tavern wall caught her eye. The Oceania Cup! She had a fine steed, Faction Silver, who could surely lead her to victory in this prestigious race. Her eyes narrowed as she read the rest of the banner. It was in Malas. Taelyn remembered all too well the last time she rode Faction Silver in Malas. Still, the race was too weeks away, and perhaps with some training, Faction could overcome his irrational fear of skittering hoppers. Taelyn went to Minoc stable first thing the following morning, and prepared him for training. Though reluctant, Faction Silver was obedient and he trained with Taelyn every morning for the next two weeks. He gave Hoppers a wide berth, but this wasn't so bad, as he also ran very fast whenever he saw one, and Taelyn was sure her horse would be the fastest because of it. The day of the race arrived and Taelyn went to Umbra and met with the other Jockeys (Mikla, on Chester and Constable Fox, on Magistrate). There were meant to be five horses but Alement and George appeared to have been scratched. Taelyn was given racing silks of pink and white, and she waited on the start line with the others. Saphire gave the word and Faction Silver was quick off the mark. He was quickly overtaken by Magistrate, however, and Chester was not far behind. Taelyn handed her book to Talon at the first checkpoint, and Constable Fox sped off on Magistrate as Mikla and Chester arrived. As Talon signed Taelyn's book, Taelyn blinked away the raindrops that had begun to fall on her lashes, and she wondered whether Faction Silver would cope in the wet weather. She needn't have worried, however, as Faction took her to Nakita (the next checkpoint) quickly, and even leapt the barrel hurdle with ease. It was the final leg, and as Taelyn had her book signed by Sigmond Fryed, she craned her neck to look ahead and behind for signs of the others. She saw no-one, and didn't waste time wondering, as she spurred Faction Silver on. Soon she reached the finish line, and saw Constable Fox was already dismounted and tending to Magistrate. Saphire was at the finish, along with Sir Seth Cromwel, Talon, and very soon, Mikla and Chester, taking third place. Nakita and Sigmond Fryed left their checkpoints and joined the others at the finish line. Saphire awarded prizes, advising that all had raced well. Taelyn agreed, especially given Chester was not on his home soil, and the jokeys all accepted their prizes gratefully. In the bustle of everyone leaving, however, Taelyn shot Constable Fox a beady look, wondering if using a police-issue mount, which was obviously trained for high speed chases, was really fair.

Greetings, citizens of Britannia! I, Martyna Z'muir, would like to formally introduce myself to you, the faithful Stratics readers. You may have seen some of my articles in the past, posted by the other fine reporters of Great Lakes. Now, however, I am a Great Lakes Reporter myself. A happy day indeed! As with my previous articles, I will mainly focus on the events of our great lands. More specifically, I will cover the sometimes rocky, but always entertaining, world roleplay. From the High Council’s struggle with the Crimson Order, to the mysterious and wily thief known as ‘M’ and beyond, I will endeavor to be there! If you have information you would like to impart to aid in my article investigations, or something you believe other citizens should be aware of, please contact me! I may be found at most events, just look for the red-haired elven lass with the blood-red gnarled staff, Truth's Blood. I may also be found at the Library of Sosaria, the three story sandstone building directly south of the Yew moongate in Trammel. Remember that you, the peoples of Great Lakes, are what make our shard special. And the events and stories add to our shared culture and rich history. Walk with Virtue,

This past week I was in Magincia, seeing firsthand for myself what destruction was taking place, and I noticed that lying on the docks of Magincia were supplies being delivered for those battling within the city. How ironic that here in Magincia, the city of pride, I would meet one of the most humble people I have had the pleasure of knowing. Her name is Lady Rachel, and every day she has been there waiting outside the gates of the city, aiding with supplies, bandages, food as well as words of encouragement. I watched as she selflessly aided those as they approached in need of healing, never once asking for anything and always offering a kind word and a gentle smile. I decided then that this was a person of Sosaria that I wished to know more about. We worked together there on the docks, and as we did we talked and I got to know Lady Rachel quite well… Lady Rachel: I am a wanderer of the lands. By trade I am a tailor as well as a scholar. I enjoy being able to help others in various ways. When I first found my way to Sosaria, a craftswoman by the name of Lady Taylor influenced me, and I would sit and watch her for hours in what was Old Haven. She would make armor for warriors and give it away. She was legendary in her craft and she inspired me to complete my education in the art. I am probably most known for my runes and rune books. I began making them one day, and now I just can’t seem to stop. Lady Rachel: For the last four years I have called Sosaria my home. I am a wanderer, so I guess you could possible say home is where I am. As for where I lay my head, I reside in the jungles of Trinsic. While I enjoy traveling to the various cities, I prefer the tranquility that is offered by the jungle. Lady Rachel: Without a shadow of doubt I would have to say the late Lord Goodman. In the brief time that I had the pleasure of knowing this wonderful man, I was blessed by him. I was fortunate to learn at his knee, and for that I will forever be thankful. His ideals will forever be ingrained in me. There will never be another man such as him, and his legacy will continue to live on through his library. He was one of those individuals, that quietly, behind the scenes, their presence makes this world a better place to live in. Lady Rachel: I would say the greatest accomplishment I have had is knowing that I have made someone’s time here in Sosaria more enjoyable. If I can put a smile upon someone’s face, make their day a bit easier, then I have accomplished all I have set out to do. Sometimes the littlest things can be the most meaningful. As for my goals, my goals are simple. To enjoy each and every moment to its fullest. That should be everyone’s goal in life. Lady Rachel: Oh.. this is the most difficult question you have asked… there are so many things I enjoy doing. I love making rune books, I do not consider it a “job”, it Is something I truly enjoy doing. I still enjoy making armor and have become quite busy filling special orders for the tailor shops. I have a passion for hunting daemons. I love being able to do little things that make others lives easier. Whether it be lighting the paths for an event, handing out armor in New Haven as my mentor did before me, or being here in Magincia, bringing in supplies that are so terribly needed or talking and cheering on the brave warriors that continue to battle these monstrosities that continue to pour forth from the abyss. I am a wanderer, so I enjoy wandering the lands, with no destination in mind. My fondest memories are those that involve being with friends, whether it be spent together in conversation or adventure. I have so many memories of the people in Sosaria when I am old in my rocker I will be smiling and chuckling til I am dust. My fondest memory though is one day walking out of the Mage shop in Old Haven and meeting a young mage just returning to our lands from long ago. An adventure spanning years began that evening, and those are memories I will treasure forever. Lady Rachel: If anyone sees me wandering about, do not hesitate to stop and say hello. From one wanderer to another, thank you again Lady Rachel for taking time to talk with me. You have been a blessing to Magincia during their time of need, and I am sure you will continue to be a blessing to all of Sosaria for all of your days. May thy paths be green and the breeze upon your back, and until the next time we meet, may the light of the Virtues guide and protect thee.

Five on Friday (Crushing Blow/Monster Looting/Smiths/Magincia/KR Patch)
Posted on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 1:47 PM EST by Daine (Origin)
Five on Friday November 16, 2007 "What’s the deal with Crushing Blow? It seems to not always add damage." "When a monster loots you, how is that loot handled? Does it just become regular loot, distributed via normal loot rules?" "I'm a Legendary Smith - why do I lose durability points so often when I try to repair things?" Chance to lose Durability = ((40 + Max Durability) - Current Durability) - (repairSkill / 100) (where repair skill is Test Center-style, i.e. GM = 1000, not 100.0) Example: Blacksmithing of 1100 (110.0), 50 current and max durability, yields a 29% chance that max durability will be reduced by 1. If an item has taken more than 71 points of damage, the chance for it to lose a point of durability reaches 100% even for a Legendary smith. So there's a definite choice to be made - do you repair early and often, and risk failure, or late and seldom, and guarantee it? "I bought the 20% Storage Increase, but my vendor slots didn't go up by 20%. What's the deal?" There's no terribly useful way to find your new vendor slot amount (short of just buying the bonus and trying it) so I'll get a new chart put together and added to the vendor page/kb in the relatively near future. "We STILL aren't seeing any rubble in Magincia!"
We're planning to go to TC next week. Here are a few of the things you can look forward to:
That's not to mention all the performance improvements, the fully-moddable UI, Legacy Art Modes "I don't play KR - do *I* get anything?" The Salvage Bag: The Salvage Bag is the core of the enhanced recycling system. Players store items in the bag like any other container, but when a recycle command occurs, they target the bag to handle all the items at once. Layout:
Fansite NewsUO's got a new fansite, focusing on KR skins and mods! Check out uoskins.com- it's brand-new, and needs some submissions, but it looks like it will be an excellent resource. UOForums interviews Crystal Rose, from Whispering Rose Radio! "Crystal Rose took some time out to answer questions submitted by our staff and posters alike. Many thanks Crystal for a great interview - check out the full interview here! " Next week is Thanksgiving, so there will not be a Five on Friday. Instead, we hope to have juicy patch notes by midweek! - Jeremy

Invasion Enters Heart Of Magincia
Posted on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 12:19 PM EST by Chango Pelon (LakeAustin)
The forces have advanced into the city of Magincia laying waste to everything. It was most difficult to get close enough to the action to find details of this newest threat. The Light Demons and Void Demons now harness new powers. I was unable to collect any information on the Voids however, the Light Demons displayed an awesome amount of energy and power. If not destroyed immediately, these beasts will unleash a power that I can only describe as... well, I cannot describe it better than these images can. I was actually thrown from a building when one of these let lose. As this demon fought on it showed more powers. On the docks, I asked some defenders for their take on the current situation. When asked how the city was doing, Darthom appeared saddened and responded likewise. Others were asked if the city was doomed and their outlook was also bleak. The answers were discouraging. I wanted to know what was causing this feeling of doom. Were the forces too much for the defenders? Did the invaders find a weakness? One warrior showed that not all hope was lost by trying to make jokes. After some laughs were had to take some of the edge off, the real reason was discussed. It seems the invaders have found a new ally. First it was Pride and now it is Greed. We have known since the start that without a unified defense, the city would fall. There are different motivations from visitors to Magincia now. Some are there to defend her and drive the forces back, while others are seeking to line their pockets. Whether promised fortune by the invaders, or by the pollution that greed is, this division only points out that the city is indeed in danger. I have not yet given up hope and I trust you haven't either. Good luck to all. Invasion Update By Chango

Gyldenfeld Reborn | ||
Posted on Saturday, November 17, 2007, 8:46 AM EST by Morpheus Mardox (Chesapeake)
The town of Gyldenfeld, nestled along the crossroads just west of the capital city of Britain where the great northern roads connecting Yew and Skara Brae converge was created early in the year 2004. This player run town established by local residents along with members from the Fellowship of Virtue created a thriving player community within the realm hosting events and roleplay for quite some time until it fell into dormency circa 2006. The town relatively small in stature consists of nine establishments most notably the famous Red Wolf Cafe which served as the towns epicenter of activity and events. For quite some time the cafe sponsored the well know monday night tavern adventure attracting thousands of residents from throughout the realm in it's prime. Red Wolf Cafe Recently I received a visit from newly appointed Mayor Lissa Eldi. While in Guardians Gate on diplomatic concerns the towns leader informed us of the reemergence of the town of Gyldenfeld and its immediate plans for the furture. After convening with Lord Angus Keeper of the Gate , Commedore Noxious Buds of Port Baldamor, Lady Daria Blackmoore of the Royal Britiannian Guards, and members of the Guardians Gate City Council it was unanimously agreed to incorporate Gyldenfeld into the already existing alliance of Port Baldamor and Guardians Gate. A pact was signed between the attending leaders in the hopes of the continued developement of the player run communities of the Chesapeake shard. Once the pact was finalized the party embarked on its first official visit to the city with renovations well underway the town will be up and running in what will be no time at all. While traversing the territories between Skara Brae and Yew make sure to stop and pay a visit to this returning town. The city looks to host a grand reopening once renovations are complete, keep an eye on the skypages for futher info!

Magincia Invasion Steps Up
Posted on Friday, November 16, 2007, 10:21 PM EST by AirmidCecht (LakeSuperior)
From Draconi on 11/16: Notes: * Light and Void daemons initially spawn weak, and don't give direct rewards to top attackers * After a few minutes, they will draw power from the large rift, and begin using their full abilities. At this point, the top attackers can receive artifacts directly upon successfully defeating the monsters * When either daemon is gathering energy, RUN * If you see the Void daemon leave behind "a black rift," try to stay away - it will suck you in and anything else around it * The overall spawn difficulty has decreased as the energy has shifted towards the Light and Void daemons. Do not be fooled, they alone can easily take down a small army. Your best chance of saving Magincia is attacking Light Daemons as quickly as you can, and forgo material gains in order to server the, erm, hmm, greater good. As The World Burns: An Invasion Update
Posted on Friday, November 16, 2007, 3:13 PM EST by Chango Pelon (LakeAustin)
Another Invasion Update By The Lovable Chango As Magincia continues to hold off the invaders from overtaking the city, this invading force of evil is working on varying tactics. Forces are at work making this a very dangerous situation. The location of what used to be the moongate is now occupied by a sparkling pillar of dark magic. A large rift has torn through the corrupted moongate. Just venturing near this rift will cause pain and fear. The demon army has been enhanced and their power has multiplied. I took to asking some defenders if there was any weakness to use against the army of invaders. Find out if they had discovered an area to exploit and drive them off for good. I first approached Twisted Sista near the docks. There was no response to my question, only a look of sorrow and mourning. Then I asked Hoke Ti'da. It was probably bad timing on my part as he was fighting off two minions and had no answer. Next I found Lady Sky of the guild [N**K] and fighting along side her was goo. Lady Sky's response was no better then the silence of the others. She claimed that there was really no weakness to be found. With no weakness to be found, these humble warriors fight on and on. Even as the hordes against them grow stronger and stronger. I am greatful for their effort and think they deserve much gratitude. As I was about to leave, I was given an invite to ask a few questions of the invaders. The difference in virtues was noticed immediately as I barely had time to finish my question. Let there be no doubt in your mind, this is not an army that will spare anything or anyone. These minions of evil have only one purpose, and that is total destruction of everything in their paths. Thanks again to those still fighting back this evil. Until next time...

http://www.uoherald.com/images/news/genNews.gif"> Oddness In Magincia, FYIJeremy Dalberg 14 Nov 2007 16:39:16 There is some weirdness with tree canopies, doubled objects, and other items in Magincia at the moment. Draconi's working on it, and has this to say: "Just so everyone knows, something did go horribly wrong.” I won't insult any ones intelligence by claiming it's too complex to explain, but wow, the factors involved in this kind of bug appearing are incredibly... unlikely. So, yeah, apparently the server decided to pull a fast one on us, and coincidentally, it's one of the same things that was once responsible for server rares :P Anyways, we have a manual fix for it, and will be implementing it shortly. Since LS has done the honors, we'll test there first. Your progress thus far has not been lost, nor will you be forced to start from scratch again. Each shard will have their individuality restored without a revert."

Guild Spotlight: Moonglow Town Council (MTC)
Posted on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 10:58 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)
I have made some wonderful friends in the Moonglow Town Counsil or MTC for short, and though I know quite a few of their members, I did not know a lot about the Counsil itself. I decided to write the Mayor of Moonglow, Lord Samon Triest and get some of my questions answered. I was pleased to see his reply, here is what he had to say... I see a lot of MTC around all of Sosaria can you please give me an explanation as to who they are? MTC is the short hand way of saying Moonglow Town Council. We are, as a whole, a group of citizens who care about the betterment and well being of Verity Isle and the city of Moonglow which rests on its soil. Can you tell me a bit about your history? The history of Moonglow. That would take a lot of space if I went into to much detail. Let me keep it simple. The council was founded by Lord GreyPawn and other citizens of Verity Isle who were concerned with maintaining the peace on the Isle of Verity. They came together a long period of time ago. Mostly to ward off the murderer's that would roam the island looking for fresh meat. The Council from then rocketed skyward. Lord GreyPawn, during his years as Mayor, turned Moonglow into the greatest city in Sosaria. Over the years since Lord GreyPawn's retirement, Moonglow has had ups and downs though. There were a number of Mayors who did little or nothing for Moonglow. That all changed when Lord Fong stepped into the role of Mayor. He brought Moonglow back to respectability. Since then, he has stepped down, and it is now my job to go about maintaining the work he and Lord GreyPawn accomplished. Upon interactions with many of your members, I hear the greeting "Semper Veritas", can you tell me what this means and why it is used? Semper Veritas means along the lines of "Always Truth". Moonglow being the City of Honesty, obviously you can see the connection. It is stated because on Verity, we believe deeply in the ways of Honesty. By saying Semper Veritas, we show our commitment to Honesty. have heard that MTC has had numerous changes in leadership lately, do you feel it has affected your members and if so, how? That is a good question. There has been a lot of changes in leadership. Honestly, it is a rough job. The people of Moonglow expect more from leadership, so it can be a stressful job. On top of that, Lord Fong and I, as leaders expect more of ourselves. We do not wish to see inactivity among our people. We want to keep them happy and content. Sadly, that isn't always possible, and sometimes the stress can get to you. We are past that now though, so I think we are on the right path. As far as membership, believe it or not, we have a solid base of membership. The people of Moonglow would not leave. They are dedicated to Verity Isle and its betterment, so for that I an thankful for. Without them, there is no Moonglow. How do you feel your council is different from others? I would like to think that the people of Moonglow have dedication that the others do not. I think that really sets us apart from the rest. Our people really do care about Moonglow. Lord Daz, for example, is the Zookeeper. That job is his life. He is constantly thinking of ideas to help spread the word about the Zoo. Things like that are what set us aside from the rest I believe. What do you look for in your members? Dedication. We look for dedicated people who are willing to stand by Moonglow in the best and worst of times. Anyone can be there during the good times. It takes a real person to stand there in the slow, down times. We look for dedicated, loyal individuals with a willingness to learn. It isn't always easy, but if you stay with us, I promise the reward will be great. What made you choose blue and white for your colors? Blue and white have been the colors of Moonglow for as long as I remember. Blue and white are also the colors most commonly associated with Honesty. I believe that is the main reason it was chosen back in the day by the newly formed council. On top of that, we look damned good standing in a line together if I do say so myself! If you could change anything in Sosaria as it is now what would it be? Tough question. Honestly, I hear so many people talk about the days of old. The "Good ole days" so to speak. Fact is, things aren't all that bad now. Just because a few people aren't happy with how things stand now, doesn't mean they should drag it down for the rest of us. I mean yes, things are slower than they once were. There are less people wandering around the tavern circuits and what not, but that doesn't mean things are going downhill. It just means we have to work harder to grab the attention of people! We cannot just stand there and expect them to come to us. We have to go to them, convince them to join us. Forgive me, I went off an a tangent there. What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as MTC? Without a doubt, our most recent Day of Finneas the Goatherd. I believe you were there, Lady Ishtar. It was an amazing event. Did you know we handed out ten million gold that day? It was amazing. People from all walks of Sosaria. The bank sitter, the Yew Gate wanderer, the artisans of the community. Everyone was there. I thought it was the best event in years. On top of that, it was the event that I put together. I will by no means take all the credit. I alone would have been standing there looking silly, but thanks to the help of all of Verity, and a few others not residing on Verity soil, we were able to pull it off! I just hope next year goes as well as this year! We are shooting for fifteen million next year! Can you tell me anything that you have not had a chance to say already? First off, thank you ever so much for this opportunity. I know there are a lot of other people out there that would love to have this opportunity. I thank you, make that all of Moonglow thanks you for this opportunity. The only other thing I can say is...Keep an eye out. We have a few ideas in the works to help raise awareness for the cause of Honesty. Just watch and see what we can come up with. Samon, thank you for answering all my questions and enlightening the citizens of Sosaria! I did enjoy my time at the Finneas the Goatherd event and always look forward to more. Halloween 2007 – UpdatedOverviewNovember 14, 2007 The many worlds, called shards, of Ultima Online were once one single world before the shattering of the Gem of Immortality. Even when it lay broken and was thought destroyed, it still bound the very fabric of Britannia's existence to its many pieces. Thus, as the original Britannia moved on in the sea of history, so went the shards in their own currents. It should then be unsurprising that the history of one world differs so greatly from another, such as in the case of the great city of Magincia: "Somewhere, out beyond civilization, is also reputed to lie the ruins of the legendary town of Magincia, which the gods destroyed for the insufferable pride of those that dwelt there. All of the magnificent marble palaces and gardens were devastated, and the rich, haughty inhabitants reduced to haunting spirits." - The History of Britannia, as told by Kyle the Younger (Ultima IV) Kyle would never come to write this sort of history for the city we know today. Magincia continued on in its prosperity, eventually attracting many of the greatest minds and talents in the realm to work at the hands of the isle's affluent patrons. Even the Council of Mages, comprised of many a scholar from Moonglow, chose there instead to establish themselves. Truly, Magincia is the pride and jewel of the outlying isles. It is true that all the shards are unique, with their own peoples and customs, wars and explorations, rulers and heroes. It is also true that many of the shards have strayed from the original Britannia, avoiding some disasters, while facing new ones. Yet... history cannot be denied. It may be diverted, delayed - even altered to a degree - but never denied. Shadows have begun moving in an undercurrent as vast as the ethereal void itself, a darkness that once set upon a Britannia many of us have never known. And so, the weight of time is about to come crashing down upon this blissfully unaware city. They will be see the threat, surely, and be confident it is minor. They will most certainly deny any offers of help, at first, and throw themselves into the fray. As the hordes advance and help lingers, history will attempt to reassert itself. Yes, Magincia will burn. Will you try to stop it? -- Magincia InvasionBritannia News Network Coverage

Magincia Invasion Update
Posted on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 7:32 AM EST by Sahra Swift (Catskills)
Greetings Catskills, I come with news on the Invasion in Magincia. Unfortunately, that good news isn't all that good, and the bad news is very, very bad news. I'll start with the good news. Those defending Magincia have managed to determine the pattern of attack of the Demons. They have also learned that if we fight them at their front line, we'll be able to push them back. Here is a quick map drawn by a scribe named Draconi: Simply put... if you see demons in Region 6, fight in Region 6. If not, look in Region 5. If still none there, head on to Region 4... then 3, then 2, then 1. This may not be great news, but at least we know how to push them back now! Another tidbit of good news is that the Council of Mages has managed to cast a spell over Magincia to save any of the folks new to our world from the dangers, causing any of them who enter the region to get teleported back to Trinsic. We've also learned quite a bit about our adversaries. We have traditional Daemons, Chaos Demons, and Arcane Demons, as well as some Imps and Hellcats. Almost every adventurer has fought against these foes before, and knows that they aren't too big of an issue. Assisting them, however, are four more powerful creatures - Balrons, Bone Demons, Devourers of Souls, and Dark Fathers. Many adventurers have experience fighting them already, but typically not while fighting so many other creatures as well. Balrons you'll want to fight much like you would Daemons, but expect them to hurt quite a bit more when they hit you, and to take more hits before they go down. Bone Demons and Devourers of Souls are typically found in the dungeon Doom. Approach them like you would any larger creature, they aren't too hard to take down with a little work (just keep your eyes open for other creatures coming to attack you from the sides while you're busy fighting them). Dark Fathers are typically only found in the deepest part of dungeon Doom. They're known to be tough, and capable of calling forth undead to help them. When fighting these, you'll want to keep an eye out for bone piles being thrown. If you see one, hit it a few times with a bladed weapon to destroy it before it turns into an undead creature if you can. Leading the pack of demons are two previously undocumented creatures - Light and Void Demons. Light Demons are, as one might expect from the name given to them, bright looking demons. Void Demons, quite the opposite. Watch out for quite a few flames when near the Light Demons, and reports say that the Void Demons are capable, though quite rarely, of sending warriors to random locations elsewhere in the world. When things seem to be going good for the defenders of Magincia is when the demons send for the third new creature - Daemon Berserkers. Treat these fellows much like you would an Ophidian Berserker. Attack them with physical damage, nothing elemental, and try to use the older artifact weapons - those frequently called "Power", "Vanquishing", or "Mystic" weapons. And the worst news... we aren't making much progress in pushing them back yet, and the Demons are getting stronger every day. There hasn't been too much damage to the city itself yet, but the jungle is pretty much completely burned down. Not only that, but the Moongate is getting more and more unstable every day. The other night, the Moongate ripped through the sky, creating a giant rift where the Moongate once stood. Here is a sketch of the gate provided to me by Flutter (how she managed to get such an accurate drawing done while surrounded by so many Demons simply amazes me!): Be careful in Magincia, but don't be afraid to help defend the city. If Magincia falls, the demons might continue on to other cities. For now, Sahra Swift

November Guild of the Month: Sanctus
Posted on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, 9:15 AM EST by Lady Alessandra (Atlantic)
We are the sword in the darkness...We are the watchers on the walls...We are the fire that burns against the cold...We are the light that brings the dawn...The horn that wakes the sleepers...The white shield that guards the realms of men... We are the Kingdom of Sanctus! Simple are these words that have come to be known as the creed of all Sanctian knights, but what is not so simple is the meaning and the history that surrounds these words. Sanctus is a kingdom based deeply within the Virtues, and is found within the lands of northern Malas. The heart of the kingdom lies within a castle, a castle that has proved to be a great fortification in the times of warfare, the Castle Blackguard. High above the castle from one of the turrets flies a single banner, a field of black adorned with a great head of a golden dragon. This banner, once the banner of House Skyfire, is now known as the banner of the Kingdom of Sanctus. The history of Sanctus is one filled with stories of trials and tribulations. Forged in the fires of war and tempered by the light of the Virtues, the roots of Sanctus were formed in the ancient Kingdom of Stormhaven. For years war waged between light and dark, good and evil, and there in the midst was the Kingdom of Stormhaven. As with all things, a time of change came to the Kingdom of Stormhaven. The time of Stormhaven eventually came to an end, but those that were exiled banned together and formed a group of loyalists led by Lord Talon Skyfire. He led them first to Trinsic, where they trained and planned for the very uncertain future that awaited them. Rumors reached them of new lands that had recently been discovered, and they agreed amongst them to travel to these lands and perhaps find a home they could call their own. It was not long before they came to where they have now called their home for many years. Their time there has not always proven peaceful, wars with various organizations have threatened to plunge Sanctus into the Abyss, but each time they have struggled and triumphed, becoming the Kingdom they are today. Today Sanctus is known by many as the “White Gate”, the first line of defense against evil and tyranny. They take all measures necessary to combat evil, to defend the defenseless, and continue to preserve the Virtues so imperative to Sosaria, and will do so until their final breath is drawn. The Kingdom of Sanctus openly welcomes visitors at all times, but be warned there are rules within the Kingdom that must be adhered to at all times. For more information, contact myself, or one of the officers of the Kingdom.

Resistance arises in Magincia
Posted on Monday, November 12, 2007, 12:27 PM EST by Medea (Drachenfels)
Resistance arises in Maginica In the last few days it was nearly impossible to not hear about the news from Magincia. We were flooded with information about the invasion, and on the past weekend, there was a lot of news about the selfless missions by the citizens of Sosaria. Of course I had to take a look myself, therefore I decided to set off for Trinsic. At the harbour where the ferry to Magincia lies everything seemed to be normal. The fishermen were selling their precious goods from the sea, the port authority checked this in their own thoughtful way, and the pedestrians hurried around. The only remarkable thing where the men and women, who looked very determined, walked towards the ferry, paid their passage and afterwards quietly looked for a seat.
They were among the people who jumped off the boat first, as it landed on the shores of Magincia. They drove their mounts quickly towards the northern part of the city. As I stepped on the wooden planks in the harbour the first thing I noticed was a ghastly quietness. A small provisional bank opend a few days before, because the one in town was no longer operable - the monsters had devasteted the building. Nearby, two medics, Ellen and Trudy, had opened up their small corner. «We have to resurrect lots of people, warriors, mages, tamers», so they told me. «But we also have to care for nasty flesh wounds from the daemon bites.» I shuddered and went to the two soldiers who prospected the city with an observant eye. «We have confidence in our training», said Khalil to me. «But we also have our precious Berta's here. And they are doing their job also very fine.» He patted the giant cannon which stood near him and his colleague, Loren. Both smiled their intuitive soldier-smirk, so that I left them alone and went deeper into town.
I had to conquer the first barricades a few steps later. These looked like they were professionally built, other ones were probably built by the fleeing citizens of Magincia. The noise of battle swelled with every step now. Sometimes, there was burning rubble and charred plants. As I came up to the bakery I espied a monster which bustled throughout the streets. A short moment later a group of warriors dashed past me, clearly tracing the monster. Seconds later I turned around the corner and what I saw took my breath away.
Dozens of monsters were fighting seemingly endless battles against men and elves. Daemons, Arcane and Bone Daemons, Imps, Hellcats but also Dark Fathers and Berserkers rushed and ravaged around this once so proud town. There was nearly nothing left of it. The buildings had taken damage from the monsters, bricks and walls were in pieces. The plants and well-groomed flower gardens were mostly destroyed, burned and black. Everywhere fierce smoke climbed into ones nose, which had been summoned by the malicious monsters. I hastily rode back towards the new harbour-bank, got my armor and joined the brave men and elves. The battle lasted for hours and the killed and injured people were numerous. However, the expression on most faces was: The dirty rotten horde of monsters should not get away so easily!

Magincia Call To Arms | ||
Posted on Monday, November 12, 2007, 8:49 AM EST by Lady Alessandra (Atlantic)
The beautiful city of Magincia, the cobble paved streets and flourishing jungle once filled with pride, now is filled with chaos and fear as the monstrosities of the Abyss spill out in massive numbers in their attempt to claim what is likely only their first city. The moongate that once allowed for all to journey freely to this city, has somehow been destroyed, and in its place one can only assume from the demons and their relations pouring from it, now sits a portal straight to the abyss. What has brought about this horrifying change only one can guess, but the fact remains that all are needed to successfully push these monstrosities back into the Abyss from where they came. All are asked to aid in the protection, not only of this great city, but the protection of all of Sosaria as well. Whether you wield weapon or spells, bandages or smithing hammer, all are needed in this effort. Magincia thanks you, and Sosaria thanks you!

Atlantic Connection Woes
Posted on Sunday, November 11, 2007, 11:57 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)
Hopefully I speak for all on Atlantic in regard to our less than consistent connectivity. It also seems to be happening rather frequently. This one impacts us all across the board, pvpers, rpers, everyone. I for one am getting rather annoyed and irritated with it, especially the timing. It has the ability to occur at the most inopportune moments and, without fail to down when you are in a dungeon or in the middle of roleplay. For those reds, it cannot be helpful in Felucca either, doing champ spawns and the like. Now we all pay to play this game, so I wonder when the shard goes down, why can it not be prorated and we get a credit each time we cannot get on without explanation. It is not like a scheduled downtime, where the shard is informed. I understand nothing is ever perfect and things do happen, but it is a service. A service that we, as customers pay for. So should we not get what we pay for or be reimbursed in some way when things like this occur? I am pretty sure that my opinion will be just that, my opinion. I hope this does not fall on deaf ears though. Many of us play for our sheer love for the game and to have a bit of fun. A lot of us have been playing for many years as well and devoted a lot of our own time and effort into this game. I would hope with such loyalty and customer base, that something will be done, at the very least looked into. -Ishtar- Note: This is my opinion and not that of Stratics.

Battle Rages in Magincia
Posted on Sunday, November 11, 2007, 11:49 AM EST by Joy-ElF (Pacific)
For nearly a week, brave citizens of Pacific have come together to defend the island city of Magincia from being destroyed by hordes of demons and other hellspawn pouring from the former location of the moongate. The gate itself has been replaced by a black void that allows the demons transport from the abyss to the city. Initial numbers of their infiltration force were small, and the waiting times between waves was long enough for the volunteers to throw a picnic. Of course, no picnic is complete without booze and this one was no exception. The demons soon decided to crash the party, but the wine didn't seem to have the same appeal to demon kin. The number of invading demons, dark fathers, and other evil things soon grew much, much larger and more frequent, but they still faltered as they were met with weapons, spells, and pets of those defending Magincia. While the battle rages on and the city's future remains uncertain, Pacific has without a doubt put a damper on the progress of destruction. Stay tuned for more reports on the battle for Magincia!

Five on Friday (Find Your Corpse/Large Iron Smith Bods/Equipment Damage and Repair/Begging/Power and Mystic Weapons )

Five on Friday(Find Your Corpse/Large Iron Smith Bods/Equipment Damage and Repair/Begging/Power and Mystic Weapons ) November 9, 2007 "How do I find my corpse when it's buried under a horde of daemons?" In the 2D client:
In the KR client:
Followup on last week’s question on Large Iron Smith BODs Wilki went ahead and fixed the bug. Now, the rewards for Iron LBODs aren't top-end (although Prospector's Hammers and Gargoyle Pickaxes can be handy when mining for colored ore,) but making sure they actually spawn in something approximating the correct numbers is important to the balance of the system as a whole. (Getting many, many more colored larges than colored smalls to fill them? Not helpful for anyone, really.) Equipment Damage, Self Repair, and You: First off, weapons:
Next, armor:
Last, shields:
Self Repair:
So, our prior answer about equipment not tending to get damaged faster than SR 5 can handle it is still more or less true (except in specific cases, like standing in pools of acid or walls of fire.) Hopefully the detailed explanation will help everyone judge when to favor SR over other properties on their gear. "Why does Begging only reduce Karma some of the time? And why does it reduce it even before I pick who I'm going to beg from?" As for the second part of the question, that's actually a bug, and Draconi fixed it, as well as adding the nuance that a failed attempt lowers your Karma less than a successful attempt. "What's the deal with the special weapons dropping off of event monsters?" Cursed Doom Artifacts: Many of the more powerful invading daemons carry cursed versions of Doom artifacts. (Being cursed, they can't be insured and will drop to your corpse if you die. However, they are substantially more common than the uncursed versions.) Daemon Weapons: Light Daemons, Void Daemons, and Berserker Daemons all have a small chance to drop their signature weapons, the Staff of Pyros, the Vorpal Blade, and the Berserker's Scythe. Check out the Halloween Event Page for details. Ancient Weapons: Berserker Daemons are extraordinarily powerful, and can only be defeated by artifacts of equal might - ordinary attacks only do 5% of their normal damage. The invading armies may carry weapons that can defeat them - Power, Vanquishing, and even Mystic weapons. These throwbacks to ancient magic have the following properties: "The Power, Vanquishing, and Mystic weapons cut directly through the Berserker’s magical shielding to deal a certain percentage of the damage you would’ve done normally to it. Power does the least percentage, and Mystics do the highest. The damage numbers you see when dealing damage to Berserkers is the 5% mentioned above, and doesn't include the extra damage the magical weapon has included as well. BNN: Daemons Attack Northern Quarter(keep magical artifacts and hazardous materials safely out of harm’s way ) Jeremy Dalberg 09 Nov 2007 20:42:54 "The northern quarter of Magincia was flanked today by daemons pouring from the corrupted moongate west of the city. Valiant citizens and militiamen alike are resisting the relentless hordes at the city’s borders, forcing the harried denizens of darkness to seek less direct routes into the city. Defenses established alongside the docks and western part of the city have held firm so far, and officials hope to improve them over the coming days. The BNN has learned that Lord Francesco of the Royal Treasury is currently petitioning every city in the realm for relief aid and donations. Meanwhile, mystery surrounds the Magincia moongate – our latest reports from the front lines indicate that the magical portal has undergone significant changes overnight. Its violent shimmering has certainly coincided with an overall increase in the invaders’ vigor and ferocity, but we stress that a direct relationship has yet to be established. The Royal Guard has warned volunteers to stay away from the moongate itself, as they cannot predict what might happen in its currently unstable state. They especially warn to keep magical artifacts and hazardous materials safely out of harm’s way." -- Sherry the Mouse

Posted on Thursday, November 8, 2007, 11:53 PM EST by Morpheus Mardox (Chesapeake)
After a week of the speratic forces of the void stepping from the corrupted moongate of Magincia, the evil within has heightened it's efforts to lay waste to the once regal city. Wave after relentless wave of Chaos Daemons, Daemons, the newly identified Void and Light Daemons, and the ever menacing Dark Father roam the lands engaging any in their way en route to the city. The forest itself charred and littered with the corpses of pressing forces and brave defenders from across the realm. Undead walk the streets, the aftermath of the Dark Fathers vicious completion of the trek from the gate. In an attempt to shore up the cities defenses, blockades built from whatever materials attainable within the various buildings have cordoned off the docks and nearby areas allowing safe entry from the Trisnic military ferry. Guards have deployed cannons in defense of the exit and as last word still control the docks. One can only hope this is not just the beginning. Cities and guilds spanning the globe have answered the call to arms and remain in hopes of saving the city from this ill fate. Keep a watchful eye brotheren and may the virtues guide you all. For the Crafters and Artisans of Sosaria
Posted on Thursday, November 8, 2007, 6:29 PM EST by Ishtar (Atlantic)
I have been wandering the lands of Sosaria for a long time, following the winds of change. Along my journeys as of late I have come across less and less of those skilled in the making of weapons, armor and furniture. It seems these artisans are becoming a rarity as of late. This is a sad day, for who else can make the goods we need to make ones home elegant? Who else can craft and enhance the weapons we wield and the armor we wear? I have been inquiring around the realms as to why this is happening and found out that the availability of the rare metals is far more scarce than it was before as with wood. The trained miner cannot use the areas they has saved and returned to time and time again as now they have no idea if they will get a good vein of ore anymore. Lumberjacks have the same problem with finding quality wood. The trees that once yielded the precious varieties may not anymore. So I turned to the voices of those artisans and crafters and asked them what they think of the changes. Lord Walter of Isk informed me that "What's the point... crafting is damn near worthless any ways..." he went on to tell me that the rune books he had purchased for various locations were now worthless now that all the ore is random. he continued to say, "I'd spend lots of time talking to people just hanging out at hammer and anvil getting 100gp tips for repairs hehe, that was fun! and selling platemail and heavy archer suits(hehe remeber those) on my vendor." I also heard from Lord Mairsil of Dark Order, "I seriously do miss walking to the forge in Britain to meet with a smith and get all that I need. ", I lament this sentiment as well. It was wonderful to go to the forge in Britain and have a friendly chat while getting your items repaired. There used to always be a jovial atmosphere, but if you go there now, you will find no one. I ask now, what are we to do? The growing element of those who make life for honest people far more difficult honest players is becoming an issue in the world that is Ultima Online. It is shameful that scripters, dupers, hackers and dishonesty have made these changes necessary. I feel that these people need to get what is their due, the problem here is that the cost of it is high and impacting the people who practiced legitimate business in Sosaria. I feel Lady Ceinwyn of Umbra said it best with her statement, "I can understand why they did this to our spawns. But it really didn't stop the scripters. It only made more hassle for normal folk. On the up side, I like getting more gems. But, it isn't enough to make me happy for the change. I curse that none of my mining books work the way they should anymore. It takes me four times as long to get the ore I need. I also wish tailors could make bags out of leather. I still don't understand why they can't." So there you have it, people do not seem to be pleased by the change of the ore and wood spawns in the least. In fact, it seems to have created more hardship than fix anything. It may have eliminates the scripting miners and lumberjacks, but made the attainment of resources far more difficult. I hope these opinions are noted and the future of the crafter is not doomed. War Stories: Magincia Defenses Bolstered
Posted on Thursday, November 8, 2007, 5:33 PM EST by Lord Franklin (Catskills)
Greetings Catskills. I bring news from the city of Magincia. As you know, demons have been pouring forth from the blackened moongate at the northern end of the island. These demons have caused all sorts of chaos and destruction, and there is no end in sight. Fortunately, aid has been sent to the town. A medic station has been set up at the entrance to Magincia. In addition to healers on site, wooden barricades and cannons have been added to the defenses. If a demon or other fiend made it to the wooden barriers, the guards would shoot it with their powerful cannons, totally decimating it so not even a corpse remained. As of this evening, several kinds of demons were coming from the moongate. While compiling this report, I saw light, void, chaos, and "normal" demons. I also helped dispatch several Dark Fathers. Hand-to-hand warriors are still having a difficult time of it because of the fire attacks, and I only saw one pet in the two hours or so I was on the scene. The demons seemed strangely weak. One energy bolt felled all but the Dark Fathers. I was using a spellbook enchanted to cause extra damage to demons, but even so, I killed literally hundreds of demons this evening. Energy vortexes also tore through them as if they were nothing more than mongbats. Unfortunately, the mages in Moonglow believe that as more and more demons are killed, they will become stronger and stronger as they adjust to our tactics. I highly recommend anyone looking for a boost to their karma and fame take a trip to Magincia while the demons are at such low strength. Access to the island can still be obtained by visiting the docks at Trinsic and walking on the boat there. You will quickly be transported to the war zone in Magincia. More news from the War as it becomes available... Stay Safe. Lord Franklin

Magincia Citizens To Aid In Defense
Posted on Thursday, November 8, 2007, 5:33 AM EST by Chango Pelon (LakeAustin)
War Update By Chango As the invasion of Magincia continues, it has become obvious this is not ending soon. Citizens once relied on the volunteer forces to defend them, but no more. The city has finally made needed adjustments to aid in its defense as well as logistic support for those helping in the fighting. First, they have blocked off some passages to help redirect invaders overtaking the docks. At the entrance to the docks, a small band of soldiers has set up some artillery and a team of medics have set up an aid station. This will free up many from these duties and allow them to jump into the main fights. And for those needing finances to equip or assist in financing others may do so. I hear this financier is also doing Last Will and Testaments for those entering the battle. (Remember it is spelled C-H-A-N-G-O) It is obvious that the people of Magincia have found some hope and are willing to stand their ground against this invasion. Another round of Thanks to the fighting men and women, and good luck to all. More updates as details come in.

Royal Zoo Lizard Wrangling Friday Night!
Posted on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 2:52 PM EST by Lord Franklin (Catskills)
Unfortunately I couldn't get this news posted as fast as I would have liked as the foundation on my neighbor's small sandstone house has begun to crumble and a recent storm turned parts of his home into sludge. We've been cleaning it the best we can, but it is slow going! As some of you may have read, Jerimiah and the Patrons of the Royal Zoo society are planning a Drake & Dragon donation night... Lizard Wrangling! Here's what Jerimiah has posted elsewhere:
For anyone not familiar with the Zoo, it is located on the south end of Moonglow Isle. Head to any fixed moongate, choose Moonglow as your destination, exit, and run south. You'll find it just south of the graveyard. You can donate several different kinds of tamed animals (and/or gold) to earn points for prizes, but the focus on Friday will be Drakes & Dragons. Guild of Beggars - Spotlight on Xorartep
Posted on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 3:24 AM EST by callum_fitzhugh (Europa)
[I have been closely following the exploits of the Guild of Beggars – a new role playing guild based on our shard – with keen excitement. They have a real unique flavour and this is something which has been created by one of their members that I think is most worthy of a news article]Xorartep, Undead Mumbler of the Guild of BeggarsXorartep came into being as the result of a failed experiment by a novice Necromancer of Umbra. Trying to create life from death he instead succeeded only in creating undeath. Xorartep's Song book
These two tragic songs actually have a happy ending. Poor Jack's ghost, drawn by his true love of Nell, drifts over the ocean back to Magincia, where the ghosts of Nell and their child rise to meet him. The three of them are now haunting happily ever after in a ruin just south of Trinsic.
Another fine song here On Monday morn as I did take a tour about the town Link to Wishbone singing a song be clicking here http://www.mac3.beggarsfair.com/Old%20Minoc%20Fair.mp3 The Guild of Beggars shows what can be achieved and how much fun can be had doing something NOT related to pvm or pvp - just make yourself a character and go out and have fun!

Europa Innovative House Designs
Posted on Tuesday, November 6, 2007, 3:14 AM EST by Meart (Europa)
By Meart When I made my first news item announcing that this series was something I would like to run Callum suggested I contacted Alynora on the UOF forums. So contact was made via ICQ and one Saturday morning I met Alynora on her character at Delucia bank. I was then treated to a tour of her designs which took over an hour. The designs were amazing and Alynora was a very enthusiastic host who quite clearly has a real passion for house designing in Ultima Online. The first design I was gated to is the subject of this first innovative house design news item. It was situated on Tokuno close to the moongate. I was told that it's design was inspired by a role play story line which involved my fellow news reporter Callum. The design was of a space rocket on a launch pad complete with a mission control center all on a 18x18 custom house plot. I was told the whole design took about a days work to complete. Alynora had cleverly put a lava pit under the rocket and used wooden posts as supports for the launch platform. What makes this design for me is the fact that it is more than just a rocket design its the attention to detail which is amazing. Clearly to be a quality house designer you have to consider and plan for all the little details which polish off the design. We can all for example design a castle on a 18 x 18 plot but the more artistic and innovative designers will always make their castle that little bit special and as I looked around the rocket this was the first big lesson I learned. The rocket was constructed from white marble house walls with blue roof tiles cleverly placed for the nose cone. To it's left was constructed a launch tower complete with gang plank for the crew to walk across to man the rocket for lift off. We stood for some time on the top of the launch tower discussing her designs and inspirations. She told me that she only knew of one other rocket design which is apparently on a Japanese shard and she only found that out after building her own construction. After the discussion I was taken to a small building at the rear of the design which was the launch control room. Alynora said it had never been completed but to me it looked very effective. Bone furniture and clever use of a tray of sushi made a control consul. Sadly this house has been replaced since my visit with a more conventional design so I have not included the location. However I was told it may be rebuilt again at a later date. In the next article I will be featuring a whole role play village designed by Alynora.

the Cove Conspiracy, Part I
Posted on Monday, November 5, 2007, 7:00 PM EST by Zynia (GreatLakes)
the Cove conspiracy, Part I By: Martyna Z'muir After the fall of Cove, and the attempt by the Tokuno native Bunshichi to represent the village on the High Council, a citizen of Newcastle by the name of James Lawford approached me. Mr. Lawford wished an audience with Nosfentor to discuss the idea of him representing the people of Cove on the Council. As I had already planned to interview the Shadowlord about the city, this seemed like a grand opportunity to combine our goals. Nosfentor finally agreed to meet with us the day before Castle British fell. Mr. Lawford and I met outside the defensive fortifications and waited to be let inside. Nosfentor herself brought us into the city and gave us an expeditious tour. The people of Cove listlessly milled around the village with a blank expressions on their faces, as if their thoughts were elsewhere. We attempted to speak with several citizens, however, they only mumbled in response and stared at the ground. As we neared the fortified bank, we were joined by Soke Bishimi as we headed for the crop fields to the north. The Soke bragged that Tokuno was furnishing superior seed stock for the fields, so the villagers would not starve. However, the fields appeared to be producing only a meager supply of squash and root vegetables, a fact that was quickly blamed on “lazy farm hands.” The conversation then quickly turned to how the High Council had always neglected the village's population and defenses. Apparently, after the siege, the Crimson Order marched on the orc fort to the south and lay waste to its population. This orcish genocide was designed to show the people they would be ‘protected’. While the orcs had occasionally attempted to raid Cove, this kind of wholesale slaughter would be unthinkable by the Council’s standards. As I reflected on the deaths of innocent orcish children, I realized that I had yet to see any human children within Cove's walls. When asked about the children's whereabouts, Nosfentor and Bishimi grinned at one another. "They are being educated in Tokuno." was Nosfentor's response. The children had been taken from their homes, shipped to a foreign land, and were being reeducated to follow Tokunese values. It is little wonder the adults in Cove seem to be in a daze; their families have been separated, and their futures put in jeopardy. While I spoke with the Shadowlord on the providence of the children, Bishimi led Mr. Lawford away to ‘show him more of the fields.’ Minutes later we were quickly being ushered out of the gated walls. I opened a gate to Britain to observe the battle preparations, and we stepped through. The third ripple in the gate's energy field told me we had been followed. Mr. Lawford quickly excused himself and headed into the city; my keen sense of tracking told me he was not alone...

News from Players: The Battle in Magincia
Posted on Monday, November 5, 2007, 7:17 AM EST by AirmidCecht (LakeSuperior)
News from Players: The battle in Magincia The battle in Magincia against the daemons, dark fathers and berserkers continued this week and has found round the clock surveillance to keep them at bay. In talking to a few LS citizens the opinions on how this is going varies. Some are itching for more intense battles while others are content to head on each wave as they come. After speaking with Nathan Windfall, I learned that after the first wave of invasion a great explosion occurred and much rubble from the jungle could be picked up and carried off. I traveled to his home in Luna to get a peek for myself as well as ask him some thoughts on Magincia. After being greeted in his home we sat down for a few questions. What do you think of the invasion so far? It’s interesting and fun when it’s working but too much waiting between. Way too much. How did I put it before? 2-8 minutes of fighting then 20-60 of waiting. However, when it’s fully working, when it’s all running it can get hectic and really keeps you occupied. A fairly sizable challenge to push the forces back. I can only expect it will get worse once the main horde arrives. And when can we expect that do you think? I’m honestly not too sure. My guess though would be sometime later this week. With that looming answer Nathan showed me the rubble he gathered in the jungle now used at his home. There is more to be found in Magincia in the coming days. After leaving Nathan’s home I arrived at the docks in Trinsic preparing to ferry over but was first to meet Alex Manion to get his thoughts on the invasion. He came baring a very heavy bardiche, red in color and newly sharpened. This was something he got from a slain beserker after battle. It was very impressive indeed. Alex, how long have you been with us on Lake Superior? I’ve been here for years. Just kept to myself until recently. This group I have aligned with now seems quite nice. How are things going for Magincia at this point? I would say things are going very well but by no means should we let our guard down. But to my knowledge there has not been any damage to any buildings. The battle has not been constant. Ah so they retreat for a time Well there seems to be at least one big push every day. There seem to be vile creatures everywhere. Do you have any suggestions for citizens as the invasion intensifies? I would say we must remain vigilant and prepared. This battle has been quite hard on the armor. It has been a good thing to see people helping each other again. With that thought, we decided to go back into battle together and ferry across from the Trinsic docks. It was indeed a great pleasure to meet Alex and I look forward to standing in battle next to such men and women of valor. If you have any pictures or stories and thoughts you would like to share, we would certainly like to hear from you! I have received a few pictures from some people as they have battled or wanted to display some fine weapons they stripped off a fallen monster. My thanks to Galen and Sabina for providing some excellent battle shots:

Magincia Battles On | ||
Posted on Sunday, November 4, 2007, 6:35 PM EST by Chango Pelon (LakeAustin)
A war update by embedded journalist Chango The battle in Magincia continues and as promised, I will be updating until this comes to an end... one way or the other. The waves of invaders seems to have no end. At times there is rejoicing as it appears the invaders have been defeated, only to have them hit harder with greater forces. Citizens of Magincia are no match for these evil forces burning and destroying everything in their path. It is up to the volunteer forces that continue to arrive and offer their support. The volunteers are little more effective in driving them away. The temporary victories offer little time for recovering. They are throwing everything they have to stop this assault and with each victory comes a price. With no end in sight, I am amazed that there is not a feeling of gloom and discouragement. I have had my doubts about our success, but while visiting the battle worn city, I see a chance. Those I have tried to speak with had few words to offer before running back into the fray. They all seem positive even when it appears all hope is lost. If you can offer support in the way of battlefield time, supplies, or working at the healing station near the docks, it would be greatly appreciated. I will continue to update you as the war continues. Good luck to all.

Report From the Battle Front: Invasion of Magincia
Posted on Sunday, November 4, 2007, 10:56 AM EST by Lady Tia (LakeSuperior)
Report from the Battle Front: The Invasion of Magincia Well this has been a whirlwind week for this reporter on Lake Superior Shard. The Invasion at Magincia is going full force, kinda…. I have spent many hours there with the warriors of Sosaria trying to repel the invaders. The call went out, THE INVASION HAS BEGUN!! And our wonderful citizens responded in full force to protect the fair city of Magincia. The Berserker Demons spawn and that can be quite a challenge for the warriors. The fire is the biggest part of the challenge, getting to the spawn that you rightfully earned, or better yet, getting to the body that is in the middle of the fire field. The devs put in quite a few hours creating this new invasion for our entertainment, but of course we want more. More spawn, more new arties, more…more…more. Then there was a tremendous explosion, which lead one wave. If you were too close you might have been ooOOooOOoo. Fortunately, I decided at JUST the right moment to step out of the line of fire. But the real question is…Is this an invasion or an evasion? Many, many citizens of our realm have spent hours and hours sitting in and around the shadowgate on Magincia waiting, and waiting and waiting for the next wave. The chaos demons spawn and BAM the warriors take them down in 2 minutes or less. I got several quotes from players regarding the new invasion: JingleBells: “SLOW” Mr. Maynard: “I think it sux so far” Spider Woman: “It blows because the rate of spawn to amount of players is uneven and therefore you can’t receive arties. They should fall in your pack as always because most time there is mass fire fields causing you to get trapped and die over and over. There again unfair. Why hunt it if it takes you 4 hours to get to kill something.” Wesley: “they could have done twice as much if they had pulled a finger from their nose”… Mythicall: “Vesper invasion was consistent, but the orc invasion was cool.” Wimp Lo: “Brit invasion was better.” Of noteworthy mention, through out the week/weekend, it was apparent that the citizens were working as a team. As warriors, myself included, died over and over to the spawn and the nasty fire, various people would always stop and give back the gift of life. I have to say a big Thank you to Lady Dreamy, Kisha, Barry Gibbons, Mystic, Wesley, Hazel Journey for all the heals and rezzes. Those are only a few. There were many, many more. (Yes, I died quite often…) Seeing the citizens of Sosaria pulling together to fight back this invasion has been very heartening. Thank you to Wimp Lo for allowing me to see his “reward” in a trade window. Below is a pic of a Berserker Scythe. It’s been a great weekend. I’m looking forward to more death and destruction, and MAYBE getting an arty. And, hopefully, the death and destruction will be the spawn….

Five on Friday | ||
Posted on Sunday, November 4, 2007, 8:42 AM EST by Daine (Origin)
Five on FridayNovember 2, 2007 The Stratics Smith Forum FAQ says, "The deed you get at and after 70.0 Real is completely random, though GM smith's have a slightly higher chance of getting a better deed." Can someone quantify the "slightly higher chance?" "GM and above gets a 20% better chance of receiving a colored BOD, and roughly a 50% better chance to get an exceptional BOD." "Why don't GM and higher Smiths get large iron armour bods?" "How is Reflect Physical Damage actually calculated?" "Reflect Physical Damage reflects only a percentage of the actual physical damage you’ve taken after your physical resist is taken into account. The amount reflected does not lower the amount of damage you take." So, say a monster takes a swing at you, and the hit would do 100 physical damage. But you have a 50 physical resist suit on, so only 50 damage gets through. You're also wearing items that add to 10% Reflect Physical Damage. What would happen is you take 50 damage and the monster that hit you would take 5 damage. "Why does this "Choose you chat handle" window keep popping up over and over?" "Why haven't we seen much/any rubble and destruction in Magincia yet?" Have a great weekend, everyone - try not to catch on fire! - Jeremy

Diary of a Duper | ||
Posted on Saturday, November 3, 2007, 12:13 PM EDT by Larisa (Origin)
When we hear or see the word duper, our minds are filled with hatred. Most of our minds, anyway. There are those who's thoughts are filled with greed. Gold and riches beyond your wildest imaginations are but an everyday "staple" to a duper. Not too long ago, the market was flooded with glacial spellbooks, daggers, bandanas, pants. Ethereal crooks, cloaks and brightly colored hooded shrouds. Alarm bells rang, but still people bought them up as fast as they could be stocked. Putting roughly 20 billion gold into a dupers hands in just under 2 months in duped sales alone. Today, this person has quit his cheating ways. He was caught, banned and reprimanded for his crimes. Caught up in the greed, the gold....the real life money that he made selling 100 billion gold at $1.50 a mil, he realizes now the huge mistake he made. Now he is just a regular guy. Rebuilt from scratch, he mines and lumberjacks like the rest of us. Makes his gold, gets his arties, his items the right way, but still suffers from his mistakes everyday. Today, I bring you the tale of the one man behind it all. Back in 1999, with a degree in computer design under his belt, he applied to EA for a designer position and was turned down. Feeling a bit discouraged, he sought other avenues to show off his talents. In 2004, he decided that since EA didn't want him, he'd help out the roughish UO community by writing scripts for them. Very well-known on the unmentionable programs website, he quickly realized that he had found his niche. Writing scripts for free shards and eventually OSI shards wasn't enough though. He began messing around with various items within the game. Manipulating them, trying to find, weaknesses, as it were - thinking outside the box. Eventually stumbling upon a "glitch" that would make him an overnight billionaire. Starting out small, he began "replicating" various items, testing the waters. Before long, he had piles of duped doom arties, bless deeds, armor and clothing. His business was thriving...but still it wasn't enough to satisfy the greed that grew within him. During his time in UO, he acquired a lot of legit items. Rare, unique items and was already dealing with some of the top rare collectors known in UO. Equipped with this new found knowledge, he sent off a few ICQ's to these collectors, telling them what he had found and offered them a piece of his empire. They snapped greedily at his offer. Two very well-known collectors offered him 100 million gold each to dupe items for their shards. Our famous duper was back in business. Shard transferring at least 4 times a day, utilizing yet another "design flaw". Back then, when Origin was new, publishes and reverts were common. Using that to his advantage, he replicated items at each revert and sold the duplicates for millions on various shards. Thus the reason for the "One Transfer per 24 hours" rule we have now. His inbox on one site was flooded with PM's just like this one: "hey there! i know that you are hammered with PMs but im wondering if you still need a blue shroud to dupe with?"After two months of prosper, our famous duper was caught but not before netting him approximatly 800 Billion gold. 100 Billion was sold for real-life cash on eBay. Yesterday, I received an ICQ from him. He wanted his story to be known, in full detail, because he was not the only one involved in this forbidden practice yet he was the only one punished for it. The others that were involved are still playing to this day. Still benefitting from his illegal practices, and suffered no repercussions at all. When I asked him if there was anything he personally wanted to say, he gave this response; "How is it I am the only one that got punished? While others kept profitting from it?" I also asked him a very tough question... [19:14] Larisa: one question I needed to ask....it's a tough one actually...if you hadn't of gotten caught, do you think you'd still be duping today? [19:14] xxxxx: nope i wouldnt be today Without a doubt....his conscience took over and he realized his mistakes. When his accounts were banned, his houses remained...the most famous of them was his castle still packed to the gills with hundreds of duped items and 800 million gold checks. He attempted to get EA to delete his houses, several calls and e-mails were sent to no avail and the day that castle fell was a day most Originals will remember for a long time. Hundreds of duped items and gold made from the sales of duped items were now in the hands of the 100 or so people that were there the day it fell. In a post by Wilki on 8/3/06... “Once it's fixed, then fine, talk about it all you want. But until yesterday, this dupe wasn't very well known. Now, thanks to the myriad of "There's a new dupe!" posts in a place where thousands of people can read it in short order, the problem is several magnitudes worse than if it had stayed within the small group that discovered it.” “I know the popular opinion is that EA is lazy, incompetent or whatever other disparaging term you can think of, but the truth is that we simply can't track this sort of duping. The way that our item information is stored doesn't make that possible, it's been that way since 1997. Lately, we've made some big strides in remedying that problem, but we're not finished. The 15 trillion was part of that effort, but it won't be the last you see.” “Trust me, NO ONE wants to get rid of these idiots and stop this harm to UO more than I do. But along with the efforts on this side, we really need *your* help as well to limit the damage that these exploits cause. Having people plaster the forums with "there's a new dog dupe!" the day after it is discovered, before we can fix the issue, get it tested and publish it, only makes the problem much, much worse.” The dupe that produced thousands of brightly colored clothing and spellbooks, the Changling dupe "dog dupe" was fixed in publish 40, but not before, through postings here on Stratics, it was widely known. Are there underlying issues that drive a person to seek such power and feeling of accomplishment not received in ‘real life’ that they are driven to find it through this avenue? John Suler’s article The Psychology of Cyberspace suggests that techno-crimes “require skill and are clearly anti-social and abusive” Techno-Crimes . Suler says this, “What motivates the hacker? Some are captivated by the challenge and excitement of venturing into forbidden territories. They derive a sense of accomplishment, mastery, and power from doing what others can't. Impressing other users, especially one's fellow hackers, is a source of self-esteem. Some are motivated by a rebellious nature. Cracking the system of the "institution" reflects a defiant attitude towards authority figures.” In this case, was it purely the drive for personal wealth that inspired our duper to continue with his deviancy? Was the need to ‘prove his skills’ fulfilled? Is he just a ‘bad person’? Can he be rehabilitated, does he want to change? Most importantly, should he be forgiven? Is a lifetime of harassment, big brother watching and loss of trust enough of a punishment? What are your thoughts?

Thursday @ the Majestic Oaks
Posted on Friday, November 2, 2007, 1:33 PM EDT by Zynia (GreatLakes)
Thursday @ Majestic Oaks Auction Thursday nights auction was filled with funny trivia, and some great items. Then again, isn’t it always! Among the crowd were two matching players. Kuan Ti and Hearts Desire. Alongside the stunning couple I sat. Tonight we decided to attend the auction in various hues of grey and accents of red. I even won a trivia question for 100,000 gold, ohh the shopping I could do with that! This year DJ Scorp dressed as Darth Vader, and one of the trivia questions was what did he dress as last year, the answer was Yoda. So keep that in mind! Also dressed up tonight, Princess Melody ran the show as a warrior. It took the crowd quite some time to guess that. My first guess was a seamstress, second was Xena Warrior Princess, and that’s how I won my shopping gold! Featured items tonight included “a tunic sewn by Rachel” and a 120 fencing powerscroll. Attending Bad Magik, Chaotic Barbie, and Minty Bubbles were quite colorfully dressed in the crowd. You may recognize Bad Magik from one of the screenshots in the Funnies column. Don’t forget Monday Night Madness on Monday, November 5th, and MOA Wednesday and Thursday nights at 9:00 PM EST. Hope to see you there!

Walking through the doors, an eerie feeling washes over you, like a thousand spiders crawling on your skin. A tantalizing aroma comes from the cauldron bubbling to the right of the room, the pangs of hunger turned to pangs of nausea as you look about the room at skeletons strewn about the floor amongst the hideous forms of bats staring lovingly at your neck. A giant jack-o-lantern smiles creepily at you from across the room, adding to the feeling of uneasiness. Looking around at the guests, no one is recognisable - they're all in their guises for the evening. A familiar voice breaks out over the din of the chatter Amathist: Welcome everyone to the PoC Oceania Halloween Ball. A Voice Against Exploitation!
Posted on Thursday, November 1, 2007, 2:17 PM EDT by Ishtar (Atlantic)
I have been in Ultima for a long time, since 1998 in fact. I have seen the tides of change pass by many times over. The introduction of Trammel, then Malas, Tokuno and finally Mondain's Legacy. In my travels and trials with this game I have known many people, both good and bad. I've seen those giving and welcoming and those who prey upon others. Those who exploit and inflict harm are those I feel this place can do without. So here my tale begins,a few days ago, a friend of mine was working skill and was approached by an individual, who wanted to join his guild. He was rather aggressive and my friend respectfully declined, told him to have a nice day and went back about his business. When the person was insisntant, he tossed up a red gate and the other individual all of a sudden began the "there is no need for that." After a little while he came back and began the same what does it take to join your guild, we saw the usual, "let me prove myself" behavior and the red gate came up. These interaction happen often and are not that uncommon in the world of UO, what took place later is what makes me irate. I know whatever happened could not possibly be part of the Rules of Conduct for this game. We thought the person was finally gone, however he was not. He returned and again, the red gate was tossed up. My friend trying to walk away, froze, ended up in Fellucca when he was able tog et back online and low and behold not only was he dead but insured and blessed items were mysteriously missing. Items that should not be missing, calling a GM gets you the typical response of, "we cannot do anything, sorry." Things like this are what cause disgruntlement among honest players. I have been told of stuff like this before, and it disgusts me. From my information, it is a form of scripting or hack program that allows this to occur, whatever it may be, it is horrible, especially for the player who ends up dead losing normally expensive in game items. It is appalling, especially, that it is allowed to continue. I hope those that witness such acts do their best to report and curb this behavior until something is done. We reported the individual and I do hope something happened. I feel it is part of my job to let people know, things like this do not go unnoticed. I try to be the voice of the community and stand up for what I feel is right. Though this story may not accomplish much other than letting people know that, I care and this is my way of doing something about it, I at least feel I did not stand idly by and do nothing. -Ishtar-

Daemons Decimate Magincia Defenses!Sherry the Mouse Oct 31 2007 7:04PM A night of revelry amongst a celebrating populace has turned into a nightmare as daemons poured through the forest and into the city in the early hours. Dozens are dead and hundreds are missing in what may be the most incredible assault on Britannian soil since the Ophidian invasion of recent past. The western forest is aflame and smoke hangs over the entire island, blotting out the lights of ships sailing away from the isle, desperate to escape daemons of every description heaping destruction upon them from the shore. The docks remain a safe haven for now, and the town populace is racing to evacuate the city even as the local government breaks down. The mayor is missing, council-members rumored to have fled aboard merchant vessels, and the city’s renowned healers and mages were amongst the first to perish in the onslaught. More information as it becomes available, this is Sherry the Mouse, reporting from Magincia.
