Lord Martin Reports on the Khaldun Expedition |
Greetings, pilgrims. Last Saturday, the much anticipated expedition to Khaldun took place with an august body of participants. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend and felt somewhat bewildered in the company of such a famed group of explorers. I had the opportunity to renew some old acquaintances and see many familiar and trusted friends. Today, I received the official account of the expedition from Lord Martin. It's quite a story. Read on. Greetings, all...I would like to thank Lord Martin for the tremendous amount of time and effort that went into staging such a grand adventure. Granted, our mission was sidetracked but many of the participants remain devoted to unlocking the mysteries of Khaldun. Furthermore, I appreciate Martin's efforts in recording the events of that day. As I was on the lunch menu for those overgrown lizards, I missed some of the events that he mentioned. To all who ventured forth into the depths of that most despicable place, I salute you! Cyn |

Sannio About His Job |
Sannio talked a bit about his job on the UO.com Boards: I want to post things of value to you; there's little point in me posting some information that's either too generic or has been said before in the exact same way. There will certainly be times when I post or explain something more that one way, and this kind of reiteration is a great way to help get a certain point or complicated idea across to people. Part of my job, right now and for the next, oh, one to two months or so, will be "catching up" on what all the exact details are regarding playing UO, and what might be changing about those details. I'll have been meeting, and continue to meet, everyone on the UO team, to find out what they do, and how they do it, and how all they do affects so many other aspects of the game. Learning who does what and what does which and which affects who is a critical part of my job, along with how, when and why to explain any or all of what I learn. I don't want to post any wrong information, or anything valueless. Right now, everyone's got the basics of Publish 12, and that's great. I could keep posting the same information, but I would consider that useless. It's more important form me to find out the useful information, because that's not only what I hope to give you, it's what you need to play the game to what you feel is its fullest potential for you. I'll be happy to give out new information when I have it available to give to you, but unfortunately that may mean my early posting practices are slow, and I thank everyone in advance for their patience. ========= Sannio Online Community Coordinator, UO Origin Systems |

SOF Battles Denizens of Ice Dungeon |
Greetings, pilgrims. One of the foremost elements of our UO world is guild life. A strong, supportive guild, or faction can make a tremendous difference in one's shard experience. There are many fine guild's in the Land of Legends and one such example is Soldiers of Fortune. Last night I received a report of a recent dungeon adventure from Citan of SOF and thought I'd share the account with you. Citan: In a moment of inspiration our Guildmaster, Lord Ivan, decided that we should venture into the depths of Ice Dungeon. We hastily prepared our weapons, armor and other supplies and set forth with about a dozen of our brothers.I enjoyed hearing of this adventure wish to thank Citan for the account. If your guild is planning an adventure or event, why not share that information with us? Just send me the details and I'll spread the word. Until next we meet, safe journeys to you, one and all. Volo Extends Invitation to Dark Ceremony |
Hail and well met, pilgrims. As some of you may know, I recently encountered a "source" who provided me with information regarding acts that most would describe as treachery most foul. The incident involved an individual named Volo, a former ward of Empath Abby. The tale apparently revolves around an artifact known only as the Ring of the Heavens. Tonight, I've received another message, this one from the mysterious Volo, himself. Read on. Greetings, Cyn.Having heard the description of the massacre at Empath Abby, it is with no little concern that I accept this invitation. Volos, you have only to provide me with the time and place of the ceremony and I shall be there. Should things proceed as I expect they might, I would appreciate a nice memorial service in the Cats Lair Tavern. Should I survive this "ceremony," I'll submit a report as soon as I return. Honor Among Us: Part One |
Greetings, pilgrims. Two weeks ago I received a lamentation from an individual regarding the lack of honor and respect demonstrated by some few people toward their fellow citizens. In response to that missive, I sent out a request for tales of honor and respect. I promised that I would post any responses in a feature entitled, "Honor Among Us." Tonight, I post the first such letter. For the record, I hesitate to post this particular submission, for no other reason than it mentions my own meager contributions to the Land of Legends. I say to you here and now that any acts of honor attributed to myself pale in comparison to the grand actions of many, many others in this land. I am as guilty as some, and more than most, in my laxity, regarding demonstrations of respect for my fellow citizens. The following letter has been a helpful reminder that even the simplest act of respect and kindness carries with it immeasurable benefits, not only to the receiver but to the giver, as well. Read on. Greetings Old Friend,Malvader, I am humbled by your letter. On behalf of those who have helped countless others across our shard, I thank you. I would also recommend that anyone interested in this topic, read the post submitted by Rockem Sockem on the Legends Forum page. It was a powerful reminder that people are the most important resource in the UO world. Until next we meet, safe journeys to you, one and all. Cyn |

Hints from FieryIce and Calandryll |
FieryIce (Programmer UO) posted on the official UO Boards these hints about UO Third Dawn titles Do I or someone have to have the 2nd tier title in order to summon the Champion? Calandryll (Designer, Ongoing Content) posted this on possible new craftables in future scenarios : All? I can't promise that all crafting skills with get new craftables in the scenarios, but we'll hit as many as we can. And in response to a post about savage shamen using chain lightning and mass poison spells (?), Calandryll remarked : Rather than just give the ability to lich lords, I prefer to keep the idea of group tactics for monsters. Future monsters in the scenarios will work together like the shamans as well. |

Player Relations: Comments from Quixote |
BJ "Quixote" Morton - the Team Lead from Player Relations took some time and made a new post in the Comments from the Team section: The not so distant days of my youth glow warmly in my memory with the camaraderie and adventure that came with the gathering of friends, a roll of the dice, and venturing forth into graph paper dungeons and cardboard tiled woods. And when the tales grew weary and the means grew worn, we carved out new quests seeking new ways to stretch our imaginations. The Commodore 64 sprang forth to further entice us with journeys into the Temple of Apshai and with my first IBM PC (jr.), Kings Quest, Wizardry, and the Ultima series followed. Though I continued playing these RPGs, as well as other paper and board games, they became just an occasional hobby as I treaded on into the midst of my career and family. Focusing on the technical side of the PC, I made a career that centered on the design, manufacturing, and improvement of these boxes that are, for most, the window of adventure and opportunity. By and by I found myself wearing many hats as a technician for this, liaison for that, customer contact here, and trainer there. Life was good, yet I wanted, in some regards, to return to my gaming and creative roots. Thus, when I found the name of Origin penned on the weekly parchment pronouncing an opportunity to not only revisit and rekindle the campaigns of valor and quest for truths, but to actually take part in maintaining a land I had long since forgotten and assisting in its evolution and longevity, I greeted the opportunity with wide-eyed enthusiasm. I have been among the ranks of Player Relations for almost a year now, and have seen many changes and many faces, both familiar and new. But through these changes and the challenges that the team here continues to face in supporting a multi-faceted game and community, I still see that spark of wide-eyed enthusiasm when discussions of improvements and new editions to the game are thrown around. I am in the company of hopeless romantics, and every day a tale is born that makes me glad to be a part of it. Since joining the team, I have focused on working with the Game Masters to define their roles, managing customer call volumes, and establishing a consistent guideline for policies and procedures for in-game support. The last point is by no means an easy task considering the complexity of the community we support, but we have seen continued improvements and we are dedicated to helping this area evolve. You, the player, are on this team with us. By posting on our boards and sending us your concerns you help turn the focus of our efforts to those areas that impact you the most and, as a player, I can empathize with many of these same issues and concerns. As we pursue this quest together, perhaps we can remind each other why we are here and take our game and community to the next evolutionary stage. I look forward to seeing what we accomplish. Later days will find me gray and perhaps even soft as the hard, youthful, edge surrenders to the satisfaction of fulfillment of a well rounded life. And as I listen to the wide-eyed excitement of my grandchildren as they conquer the newest level of the latest dungeon quest on whatever the media is at that time, I can smile and know that our efforts will live on. Good gaming – BJ "Quixote" Morton Team Lead Player Relations |

Letter From Zaio Intercepted |
Mishca of Kinship Village recently acquired a letter written by Lord Zaio to his sometime assistant and lover, the (apparently) late Yosh. On more than one occasion, Zaio and Yosh terrorized Kinship Village, though substantial doubt has been cast upon whether or not Yosh can be held fully responsible for her actions. Zaio himself has proved particularly difficult to kill, which is why the letter is of such interest. The details of the matter are quite involved, and can be found here. In the following account, Mishca describes her reaction to the letter. Mishca sat in the tavern holding the strange note that had been hurriedly thrust at her by Tinnile. It was addressed to Yosh, who everyone in the village knew was long dead. She still didn't understand why Tinnile had given it to her. As far as Mishca knew, Tinnile was on Zaio's side now. |

The chicken fights were attended by many people and many chickens. At the end of the fight, ALL competitors were declared the winners. A mass chicken tie. |

More on Hextor Prophecy |
We received this letter recently. Hail all I bear the latest news about the prophecy! It seems the followers of Hextor have recruited or at least allied with The Hands. The Hands were seen asking around about Hextor and the prophecy... Most notably they were sighted making inquiries at the Byzantine Empire. Mayhaps they know something we do not? I am uncertain as to what course I must take but we need many of the forces of light to combat this evil... Also some savages have been seen attacking the Byzantines... If these attacks are related to the prophecy or not I do not know, but I will keep you updated and feel free to research on your own! |

Aftermath of the Savage Emergence |
OOC: With the termination of the first scenario, the savages seem to have become extremely popular with the players of Catskills. I've heard of a number of savage guilds forming, and it was some of these that contributed to this report. Further, I've heard quite a bit about the battles that terminated the scenario. Due to unexpected computer circumstances that took me away from Stratics, I was unable to post many of these, but I'd like to thank everyone who sent in their thoughts or information. Since the final battles between the orcs and "savages" set Britannian natives against each other across both facets, rumors have been frequent about these mysterious, painted people. Reports have made them anything from agents of Minax or some other power to refugees from Ilshenar to defenders of Britannia's natural environment. Similarly, rumors of Britannian natives joining the savages on a more than temporary basis have been hard to ignore. At this point, little is clear, except that the savages are skilled warriors, mages, and artificers. Their warriors are able to destroy dragons and nightmares with incredible speed and precision; Rikimaru, who fought the savages in Cove, calls them "human blade spirits". The deadly genius of their tinkers has become clear, as well; the bola, a savage invention, has been introduced into combat not only in skirmishes with the savages themselves, but also upon the battlefields of Felucca. Though most savage activity has been isolated to the parts of Britannia and Ilshenar that they have claimed, some groups of savages have been sighted attacking the orc strongholds, meeting resistance from clans and shardies alike. The following letter was found in the swamps where the savages have been driven, on the Felucca facet. It appears to have been written by a mage or alchemist, but nothing more is known of the author. As I sit here writing, its hard gather my thoughts. There is so much to say, and probably so little time. I will write this account of the events leading up to my capture, and pray that some noble citizen will find it and deliver it to the castle.Meanwhile, large numbers of shardie orcs, the savages' first targets, have fled to artificial caverns on both facets. These are well defended, full of orcish archers, bombers, and the deadly brutes. Brutes seem to be dominating their fellow shardies; in combat, it's not uncommon to see a brute throwing his fellow orcs into the brawl. |

Betrayal and Murder at Empath Abby |
Greetings, gentle readers. A few days ago, I received a most unusual story. The source, who must remain anonymous (for his/her own safety) told me the tale while keeping a watchful eye upon the rooftops and ran-soaked streets of Vesper. It was clear from his/her demeanor that my "source" felt fearful of life and limb. While the tale is yet incomplete, it did give me some insight into certain dark aspects of the Priesthood and a bloody conspiracy within Empath Abby. While I have yet to substantiate this story, I can say that my "source" spoke with veracity and conviction. Read on and judge this tale for yourself. It was a cold, dark and dreary day, the halls of the great Abby were silent. The sound of petitioners at the door nor the cries of hungry peasants was to be heard that day. It was a day that Volo would remember for the rest of his life.As for this Ring of the Heavens, one may only wonder if such an artifact truly exists, and if so, to what purpose? I not been able to verify that the Abby and it's inhabitants have been laid waste but shall begin my investigation at once and will inform you of my findings, post haste. Until next we meet, safe journeys to you all. Cyn |

The Wedding Planner |
Just when you think that all possible avenues for creating your own career have been explored, some innovative person comes up with a new way to make a living in UO. LdyHawke, the owner of the Magdalena Museum, has been recently working as a wedding planner. LdyHawke assures me that she was not inspired by Jennifer Lopez. She says, "J. Lo had nothing to do with it. A fan of the house came to me and asked if he could have his wedding there. I said that was not a problem and asked him a few questions about it. As it turned out, he needed some help planning it...One thing led to another, and I became a full fledged wedding planner." Those interested in this field should be warned that planning a wedding involves a lot of work. LdyHawke spent hours redecorating the entire roof of her tower into a wedding chapel with a lovely flowered bower. She planned seating and food, made the rings and then talked to the bride and groom about their outfits. They wanted to wear red and gold, and LdyHawke helped design and then created their ensembles. Then she performed the ceremony and made sure everyone signed the guestbook. The groom also asked for a reception that would be fun for the guests, and Ldyhawke came up with a fun post-wedding game and even donated prizes to make the game more interesting. I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of Cristina and Pyro Blast, and I have to say the entire event came off beautifully. The ceremony was short and incredibly sweet, and good fun was had by all at the post-wedding party. Afterwards I sat down for a few minutes with the exhausted but pleased LdyHawke. Will she be planning more weddings in the future? Not any time soon-there is a LOT of work involved. LdyHawke says, "It is not something I would want to do every week, but it was a real blast. I had not met the couple before they asked me to do it, and now I have two new friends on the shard." |

Win a Free UO2 Novel! |
Hear ye! Hear ye! Free Copies of the first novel in Austen Andrew's series, "ULTIMA: The Technocrat War", can now be won over at the official UO.com website. Make sure to check out their new UO.com Contest Page for more details on how to enter.
One of the only ULTIMA novels ever written is finally available, based on the fiction surrounding Ultima, and specifically around the recently-cancelled Ultima Online 2. Austen Andrews, the same author that wrote the Prequel Fiction for UO2, spins a 344 page tale that takes us on a journey into The Technocrat War just after the Cataclysm caused by Lord British. To give you an idea of what you can expect from the book, here is the description from the back: In addition to the contest, Book I of the trilogy can now be found in several locations, including at Amazon.com and at BN.com as well as most retail locations of Barnes & Noble. Word has it that Austen is currently hard at work to complete Book II as well. |

Greetings and Salutations ~ Allow me to introduce myself as the newest addition to your Great Lakes News Team. *cue 2001 theme?* Smiling, but without further adieu, I'll bring you up to date on Amidala. I set foot on this land nearly a year ago. The lush pine dripped its heavy scent into the breeze, and I lingered a moment before journeying on to the barren land I would call home. I had my start long before, in a land distant and unfamiliar to most--Lake Superior. I made my pilgrimage to seek new challenges, and in hopes of making new friends. A compadre from my previous "life" extended me the kindness of his home as I settled, but before long I had set out in search of my own tract of land. I found a place to my liking in the heart of Yew, and the woods stayed quiet and peaceful throughout most of the day. Nights brought a flurry of violence, but I was safe and busy within my home. I soon had a small shop running, and customers of all dispositions looking to me for their supplies. I found many honorable and lasting friends among the Lords, Ladies, murderers, thieves, and other folk who came knocking at my door. Never a dull moment in my shop, and the opening of Public Moongates and Factions worked well to my advantage. I met a steady supply of new players, and began to devote a large portion of time to helping them get a start in life. If you've ever undertaken a similar project, you know that the reward is well worth the sacrifice. The continuing success and accomplishments of those I've helped out never ceases to bring a twinkle to my eye and smile to my face. They know me as Ami, French for "friend". By trade I am an Archer, but my "alter egos" pursue a very broad variety of interests and activities. Ce'Nedra Willow recruited me to moderate the UO Archer Board earlier this year, and later I wrote the Professions Essay: the Archer. I greatly enjoy being part of the Stratics team, and was very pleased to find that a UOS guild existed on Great Lakes. In "real life" I enjoy web-oriented programming and design. I am also a classicly trained musician, and appreciate nearly everything that reaks of artsy, from paintings to films, and from hip-hop to not hip at all. It is very exciting to be working as part of your News Team--if you see me in-game, don't hesitate to stop me and say "hello"! To contact me or any of your GL News Team, post an email to [email protected] Fair Winds, and following seas, ~ Amidala |

An Interview with Lich Lord Vecna |
Last night while wandering through Trammel on a shopping expedition, I found myself near the shrine of Spirituality. Walking West, I found one of those unholy Temples of Vecna that have been springing up like dank mushrooms in Trammel and Felucca alike. Never had I seen one so close to one of the Shrines dedicated to the virtues we in Sosaria hold so dear. Disturbed, I headed over to Golgotha to beard The Chained God in his den, hoping Vecna might shed some light on this alarming development. I found Lord Vecna meditating, wearing the virulent purple bone armor that bears his name. He was seated on a throne piled high with the bleached bones of unfortunates who have crossed =G= in the past. I can only assume his spy network had alerted him to my approach, or perhaps he sensed it in some nefarious way. At any rate, he seemed utterly unsurprised to see me and nodded me to a seat on a bench, his single eye appraising me from the shadows of his bone helm. The other socket was disquietingly empty. Pluffy: Vecna, for a long time Golgotha was ruled by the Lich King, Soulstealer. Where is he? Anyone interested in starting a Temple of Vecna or becoming a Follower should contact Vecna at ICQ #78245748. |

A Tale of Two Savages- Part One |
The ships captain finally announced we were headed towards the serpent pillar. I turned to look back upon the mist-clad city of Skara Brea. It was late afternoon and for some reason we had decided to sail overnight (something to do with a group of pirates). The treasure map we had discovered led to the Lost Lands. As night enfolded us, we decided to settle in our bunks for the night. We left the ships captain and his first mate to keep us afloat. That night, I didn’t feel like much sleep, so I crept back to the main deck of the ship. There I saw something I didn’t like. It was the ships’ captain and the first mate speaking: “Arr, ye be right cap’n” said the first mate, “We could easily overtake these land-creatures and get all the loot for ourselves.” “Yes, but ye need think about that magical lubber back yonder.” replied the captain. “Mages be more talk than they be worth.” I was about to creep back to my bunk when form the other side of the ship, there was a creak in the wood. Both of the men stopped talking and looked in that direction. All three of us were shocked to see one of those savages that were invading the towns of Britannia! The captain and first mate ran over to the savage, prepared for a fight. I cried out “Halt! Do not hurt the poor savage. Let them speak to us if they will.” This seemed to shock the two men even more as they suddenly thought that I may have heard them speaking. The savage was equally shocked to see all three of us with him on the deck at the same time. He ran for the side of the ship, prepared to jump, when the captain grabbed him around the ankles and tripped him. The first mate grabbed a rope and tied his feet together and found another length of rope for his arms. We then took the savage below decks to a storage area and tied him to a few full kegs of ale. Satisfied, we turned to each other: “Now, what ye be doin up this time of night?” asked the captain. ‘I was merely trying to gauge our progress by looking at the stars, gentlemen.” I replied. “How long ye be doin that?” “I only had reached this doorway when the savage made his noise.” The captain looked at me strangely, looking for a hint of non-truth in my words. My hope was that he wouldn't find it... |

Cynthe's Views on Trammel vs Felucca Debates |
Cynthe (UO Community Manager)has commented on the topic of Trammel vs Felucca debates which are sometimes posted on the official UO Boards :A common topic here on these boards lately has been the debate between players who prefer the Trammel facet and those who prefer Felucca. While it's perfectly understandable that players want to defend their preferred style of play, and their preferred facet, almost every one of those threads degenerates into a shouting match, replete with name-calling and personal attacks. These threads bring down the atmosphere of the boards, taking focus away from players who actually want to communicate their ideas and questions about Ultima Online. |

Comments from Cynthe, Sannio & Kerowyn |
The following was just posted to the Comments From The Team Section: Comments from Cynthe Well, after 2 weeks of soliciting and accepting resumes, 1 week of evaluating those resumes, two weeks of interviews, and then two weeks while the people I chose got settled here (one was already working in our office as a Game Master, and the other underwent an arduous 26 hour trek down to Austin), I am no longer alone in the Ultima Online Community Relations department!Comments from Sannio Hi, everyone. I’m your new Online Community Coordinator, or “OCC,” and you can call me Sannio. Some of you may recall that name from my time as Seer Sannio on Chesapeake. I played for well over a year as Wixim the Mad, Lord Hughert, Korryn, Joye (Minax’ patsy in the Trinsic invasion), and even Dupre, plus a bunch of other characters and monsters and such. Before that, for a short time, I served Napa Valley for a few months as Counselor PapaMan.Comments from Kerowyn It’s been three years since I first stepped into the world of Sosaria. I’ve gone through three years of building skills, changing character templates, meeting new people, adventuring and, of course, dying. Now, I’m here, sitting in Cynthe’s old office, and introducing myself to a community that has influenced me on so many different levels. |

Shiver me timbers! |
As I entered the room, Jheli stopped sharpening the blade on his cutlass long enough to toss a scroll case at me. "Heads up, lass," he said flatly. "There's dirty work afoot." I unrolled the parchment and read:
I glanced over the pages Thalios had sent. From the look of it, the pirates had been busy. I studied Jheli's face for signs of alarm and saw only determination there. He'd done his time in high seas battles, but those days were long past. "You're not going after them, are you?" I asked as he tested the blade's edge. "I'll not go lookin' for a fight, but never let it be said that I ran from one, neither." Satisfied his task was done, he sheathed the cutlass. "Pirates is bad news, missy. Once they get a toehold on a stretch of water, you'll need Davy Jones himself to purge 'em out." Sail at your own risk, gentle reader. |

Strange Book Found! |
Hail, This evening while adventuring through the wilderness of Ilshenar, I came across a dark building Signed as "The Deuces Vinculum Inn" I regularly wander the lands but never carry a sextant, so unfortunately I can give no co ordinates to this eerie building. I can tell you that I travelled a long way north from the honesty shrine through thick jungle. I guess you are wondering why the building is strange, well it wasn't the building it was it's inhabitants that grabbed my attention. As I entered the building I felt the familiar stench of magic in the air, it sickens me just the smell. I pushed through the stench to the top floor, as I peaked around the corner I saw 10 figures in black robes, so black that I nearly did not see them at first, they were sitting around a table chanting something, it sounded like "eckardus und cali". It gets worse, on the table was a shadowy human shaped figure growing and getting darker by the second. One of the wretched mages noticed me and gave warning. The wraith of a man turned and screamed at me, this scream was like no other and froze me where I stood. As the beast screamed the people in black teleported from the roof and made their escape as the wasted figure dissolved before my eyes. In the mere seconds I was frozen the black clad mages vanished. However, upon returning downstairs, I did find a book and have included some sketches with this message. Not only was part of the title missing but it also appears several pages are also missing. I will keep the book in my possession until I find someone who can understand it better then I. To be honest the book smells of magic and I am eager to be rid of it so I hope this pigeon finds someone who can shed some light on this mystery and take this blasted book from me. Farewell Khan the Mad One of the tattered pages from the book |

Hanse on Player Vendors |
Just a quick note from Hanse (Designer UO) on player vendors posted on the official UO Boards. In response toCan a red comment on this. It use to be that their was 12 UO days in one real Day. Since publish 12 vendors are saying theirs 3 uo days per Real day. Was this intended or a issue? One reason i ask is that if its just the display wrong and its still 12 uo days then this needs to be fixed quickly or alot of people will lose vendors. Hanse replied The player vendors were not charging 12 times per realtime day. They charge 3 times per realtime day. The old report was wrong. It was misleading information. The new gump has the correct information. |

Detailed Information On Shopkeeper Restocking |
Finaly Krum gave away detailed info in this post about restock changes:Vendor restocking was changed as part of a publish 12 and 13 bug fixing effort. Since the release of UO, vendor restocking has never worked the way it was designed to. I discovered this while fixing the problem with mage vendors disconnecting players when they restock. Thanks to Krum for explaining it to the players!! |

1 million UO gold can be yours! |
That's right people...1 million in gold on Napa Valley is up for the taking. It seems that the vampires over in Carafax have had a little trouble as of late...well, don't listen to me...what do I know? Let me have Scotia, the leader of Carafax fill you in:Particular artifacts have been taken from our fair city that we want returned immediately! They are pictured below:Okay, people...this quest will take place over the next few weeks with a new puzzle/event taking place each week. This will not be strictly PvP, but a combination of the two. The fighting portions will take place probably on Felucca while the other puzzles on Trammel. To sign up you should go here and look for the thread that says: 'sign up'. Then read the thread titled: 'Vampire Quest back story. Read to know what's going on!' Just leave your Players name, guild affiliations (if any) and availablity to play. There is no fee for signing up! The first night of the quest will be annouced soon, however, there will be clues related to this quest strung out in the Napa Valley News section and/or the Napa Valley Forum which you can find here. To win the million in gold you are going to have to be the best player possible. Smart, fast & good at combat. There will be a point system involved that will be updated upon the completion of each quest. The faster you finish (or defeat your enemy) the more points you can get. Those in the top ten to finish each night will recieve a special prize. Points scored will be posted before the event (how many you can get per night) and afterwards (who got what). |

How to choose the right guild for you |
There are as many types of guilds as there are styles of play in UO. That is one aspect of the game that makes it unique and exciting for such a myriad of subscribers. Something for everyone. Over the next few weeks as we prepare for the upcoming guild symposium, we will be providing glimpses into these different guild types and offering advice and recommendations on how to build or locate a guild that suits your playstyle. As you shop around for a guild, here are some things to consider. All for one or one for all? Some guilds may require that you do not affiliate yourself with any other guild. They feel that if you have one character on their stone, to put another character on a different stone is a kind of treason. To some, this may not present any problems. You love your guildmates, you have no desire to pal around with anyone else and life is good living exclusively for that guild. To others who are more sociable or enjoy a variety of interests, it will not work. Be sure to question prospective guild masters about this and consider if it is a stipulation you can abide by. Size does count Some folks are social butterflies. They can never have too many friends and enjoy traveling in large groups. Others prefer a more intimate relationship with guild members. Someone who is a bit of a loner, but occasionally yearns for a bit of companionship may want to stay with guilds that have a smaller membership base. Large guilds have lots of benefits. If you get into a jam, there is usually someone available who can rescue you in no time. Chances are, too, that there is every type of craftsman associated with the guild who can help you equip and supply your character. Along with the sweet comes the sour, however. You can be sure that at any given time of the day or night, you will be receiving desperate “Help me!” messages or requests for goods and services, and you may fall through the cracks of getting your fair share of attention or recognition for great deeds. The larger the guild, the more you can expect this. Investigate the size of a prospective guild before you join the roster. Determine if you feel more comfortable with a smaller group rather than a large one. $CaChing!$ Occasionally, guilds will require that you pay a weekly fee, either in resources or gold. For more established players, these dues may seem like peanuts and will hardly be missed. For a newer player, it can mean extending the anguish of building a nest egg and developing skills. Other guilds have a fund and resources set aside specifically for newer members. Inquire about the guild’s financial status, if you will be expected to contribute to their coffers, what they might be saving up to purchase or accomplish. Are these goals you are willing to work toward yourself? Who’s in charge of the money? How reliable is this person? These are details you should know. If your questions are met with hedgy answers, this should sound an alarm that this may not be the best guild for you. Sup, um, thou? Are you a roleplayer or do roleplayers irritate you more than nails on a chalkboard? Does your prospective guild claim to be a group of roleplayers, but have no concept of the concept? If you are running about using your most proper Olde English amid a bunch of naked fellows screaming, “u suxxors,” this guild may not be the best choice for you. Someone who freezes up in pvp like Bambi staring down a Peterbilt on the highway may not fit in well with the local gank squad. Birds of a feather flock together, as they say. Flock with your own kind. You’ll enjoy it much more. The best way to know if you will benefit from a particular guild, and if they will embrace you as a member, is to travel with them a bit. Go hunting with them. Observe their style, their teamwork abilities, how they interact with others outside the guild. With the large variety of guild types available, you’re sure to find one that’s right for you. |

Some Info About Changed Vendor Spawn |
Krum was so kind to give us at least some small info about the new reg spawn on the uo.com-boards. The first info can be found here and is about the time rate and vendors restocking their supplies: Who said it was supposed to be 10 minutes? Vendors now restock their inventory randomly.and the second post here: In reply to:There are also reports that not only the reagent spawn has changed, but also the ressource spawn for logs, iron ingots and other things. Update: Here are some more posts from Krum about this issue. The first one here about the question that the whole changes were made for the reason to make the spawns faster and better: : No. People are making incorrect assumptions about what the vendor change is and why it was made, and for some reason have an expectation that any change will be justified in complete detail. I think it's important to understand that not everything is done for an obvious reason or for a reason that may or may not be perceived as acceptable by the players. The next interesting post is about the fear that vendors may run dry because the spawn is too random: There are minimum and maximum time caps on the restock rates, so that this will not happen. |

The rewards system will be activated systematically on pre-determined shards, and we will post a schedule once it is determined. A Snowball's Chance in...um...Oasis |
Sunday's Fight Night in the Pits of the Free City of Oasis got started a little late, but then progressed smoothly, save for a single incident that occurred when someone breached the Pit House and made it into a pit where a scheduled fight was readying to start. The judges and pit guards have a KOS policy on anyone who sneaks into a pit. Often the judges will give one warning, but they are not under any obligation to do so. The offender gave murder counts, and the judges responded by keeping the offender's belongings. The competition was rough, despite the absence of two of Fight Night's notable regulars, Monk and Demon. Several proven, brilliant PvPers were knocked out early by fierce and determined newcomers. This week Cillyz took home the third place title and 10K. Celephias won second place and 30K. The first place winner, DD (shown above taking Celephias' Snowball in the face just after their bravura performance in the finals) took home 60K. DD joins former winners KMSEMPERFI (with 2 victories under his belt) and Ke'aldren on the winners list. All first place winners are automatically entered into the Final Fight-Off, scheduled to take place on October 28. The winner of the final Fight Off will walk away with check for 1 Million GP. Only 13 weeks remain in the season, so PvP gods should be sure to head to Oasis next Sunday at 4PM PST. No pre-registration is needed, and the rules are reposted on the Stratics Sonoma Forum every Sunday before the fights. |

The New Orc Lair, mayhaps? |
I have come across something of great interest. It lies in the Yew area, embedded within the old ratman valley. Follow the left-side range downwards, and it is close to the bottom. It appears as a dungeon entrance, with wooden fencing and dungeon like rocks surrounding the pitch black hole. Around this area there are plenty of orcs guarding it. The new orc lair mayhaps? Once inside you'll move up a small passage way, where a large orc fort lies. I dared not go further, as up ahead I could see orc scouts, orc choppers, dire wolves and plently of other monstrous creatures awaiting me. I quickly hurried back out. - Roldo Swishap, Bardic Warrior. |

In the city of Magincia, one of my fellow criers was heard reading this announcement to passers by. This evening, Magincia mourns the death of Lord Emerson Crowley, a nobleman of the city who has served in its Parliament for the last five months. Lord Crowley did perish in a battle in Yew this evening against a group of mercenaries known as the Black Rose Society. Also falling in the battle alongside Lord Crowley was Jack Bartgen, a member of a recently disbanded Jhelom based fighter's guild called the Library of Scars. Jack Bartgen did recently travel to Magincia with his fellow guild member, Lord Crowley, and had settled there with him. Rockem Speaks Out... TBs Plans Event |
Hail and well met, pilgrims! Yesterday, while walking the streets of Britain in Felucca, I had a chance meeting with Rockem Sockem. As most of you know, Rockem is the longtime leader of the True Britannians faction. We spoke of many things including strategies, the current State of Factions on Felucca and the TB "community." I asked him for a "direct quote" and Rockem replied, "The training time that we put into the newer TBs has paid off, resulting in wonderful people in our community." It's clear to this reporter that a sense of "community" is very important to Rockem and the rest of the TBs. It's long been said by many observers that TB does not have the overall "warrior talent" of Minax, the Shadow Lords or CoM, but they have "heart." It remains to be seen if "having heart" is enough to prevail in the long run. Concluding our visit, Rockem vowed to send me a "press release" regarding an upcoming event. I received the release a moment ago. Read on. Hail, Lord Cyn. |

Knights of Chaos Oppose Guardians of Truth |
Greetings, citizens. As most know, guild wars come and go, and as a rule, most aren't exactly "news worthy" events. Yet, I received this impassioned message from an unnamed member of the Knights of Chaos and thought perhaps it might be a bit different from most guild skirmishes. After all, it's not often that one hears of a dragon being loosed inside a guild house, anymore. In fact, I just can't remember the last time we had a good, old fashioned "guild war" on Legends. FierY iCe About Obtaining Third Tier Title |
FierY iCe answered a question from a player how to obtain the third tier title in Ilshenar in this thread:You've almost got it. Killing more and more monsters will not get you the third tier of titles. Getting to the third tier will involve fighting the "Champions of Evil" I have mentioned before. In order to see these champions though you do have to fight back the spawn quite a bit. So while killing tons and tons of creatures will not get you the third tier, it is required to get the Champion to appear... And then you can fight the champion to try and get the third tier... :)You may also want to check out the titles that are known by now in our Hero Titles Section. |

An Amazing Tower |
Oh me! Oh my! What an amazing sight to behold! Tonight I had the pleasure of visiting the Tower of 1000 Glacial Staves. It is a large tower located in the Trinsic Swamps (Trammel) (Coords:104'9"S 8'13"W). The building is kept by Jade and contains an astonishing 999 glacial staves (the 1000th is, of course, held by Jade herself). Every floor contains many curtain-like structures made from glacial staves; the sheer number gives this building a very chilly aura. The many glacial staves, while impressive, could not compare with the true treasures of this building, the artwork. The four vendors in the building are not used to sell goods, but instead display magical pieces of art. Displayed below, these scenes are very detailed and realsitic. This unique addition is sure to leave a lasting impression on the many visitors. Overall, the sheer number of glacial staves was a bit overwhelming. I am sure that collecting these took a lot of time and energy, and they surely make this a unique building. However, it is the finely crafted pieces of art that make this building truly special. I invite you all to visit and give compliment to Jade's amazing achievement. Note: Special Thanks to Maelwyn for his post on the Stratics Sonoma Board for providing the pictures of the amazing artwork. |

Reporting Duping Bugs and Issues with House Decay |
Just 2 short notes posted on the official UO Boards. On duping bugs, Cynthe (Community Manager, Origin Systems) posted this Dupe bugs are a tricky subject for us. On one hand, we do want it to be known that we DO investigate and address any dupe bugs that we find. Players who are proven to have used duping exploits are most definitely punished.Krum (UO Senior Programmer) has confirmed that OSI/EA has received reports on issues relating to the disabling of house decay on certain shards. Some players have reported that the disabling of house decay has inadvertantly condemned their houses. My review of the changes that were made to disable house decay show that it is extremely unlikely that this change specifically would cause houses to become condemned. However, I would like to point out that if it is the case that houses have been condemned that should not be, it is probably a different issue entirely, it was not intentional, and regardless of the actual cause we will be looking at the situation before we turn house decay back on. |

Mourning the Loss of Honor and a Request for Tales |
Greetings, pilgrims. Today, I received a carrier pigeon into my humble dwellings. Carefully, I extracted the message and with weary eyes, read the exquisite penmanship. The message was simple though thought-provoking, in the extreme. Another lamentation for "days of olde," when citizens of all philosophies and creeds treated others with a measure of respect. Read on. My good Lord Cyn,I respect the views of this noted scholar, and sadly, I must concur. The prevailent ideal of Honor in our land is but a poor substitute for that exhalted Virtue that we knew in days of olde. However, our warrior class is not bereft of all Honor. Honor comes in many forms, some of which are near unrecognizable, unless subjected to more than casual scrutiny. Like the cosmic principles of Yin/Yang, which by the way can be argued as the catalyst for the appearance of the Stranger, Honor is an intrinsic part of our world. Without Honor, there could be no "dishonor," just as there can be no light without darkness or "good" without "evil." Every day, I hear tales of heroic and dastardly deeds. Such manifestations of those attributes seem to comprise the very foundation of our world. Yet, I seldom hear tales of Honor and Respect. In the ancient discipline of Bushido, or "Way of the Warrior," respect is considered as intrical to the Way as any "warrior skill." Mental attitude sets apart the "would-be great warrior" from the truly magnificent warrior. The old adage is as true today as it was all those centuries ago, "Without Respect, there IS no Warrior Way." Thus, to support my claim that Virtue is indeed "alive and well" in the Lands of Legends, I humbly solicit tales of Honor and Respect. Have you met a citizen that embodies the attributes of either? If so, share your stories with us. I will present these submissions in an upcoming feature article entitled, "Honor Among Us." For now, I bid you all a safe journey along Life's path. Cyn |

Barret's Coffee House Grand Opening |
The Knights of Sosaria & The Merchants of Elysium are please to announce the Grand Opening of Barret’s Coffee House on Saturday, July 28 at 3:00 PM est. Barret’s is located on Trammel, north of Trinsic at 74 42 S 34 6 E, just behind the Elysium Rune Library & Drunken Dragon Tavern. You may ask, what purpose will a coffee house serve in these realms? Barret’s will be more than just a coffee house, it will be a place of trade. At different times at Barret’s you will find people wishing to sell, buy, or trade for various goods. Barret’s will be the home of many auctions and other merchant type events. The Grand Opening will feature many give-aways, including gold, high quality magic items, fished up treasures, and much more. The first of many future auctions will take place at around 5:00 PM est. After the auction, we will be serving a free feast for all who come. At the end of the night, anyone willing is invited to join the Knights in a dungeon crawl. We will leave the dungeon choice open until we see how big and experienced of a group we have. Travelers are encouraged to also visit the Elysium Rune Library & Drunken Dragon Tavern. In the Library you will find runes to suit all of your needs, including all cites and dungeons, a treasure map library, and ore books of every color. The Tavern is just above the Library and has ample seating and drinks for all. Visitors may also enjoy the Rose Garden of the Virtues upstairs in the Northwest corner of the Library/Tavern, and some of the other great dcor. Directly in front of the Library & Tavern is the Elysium Archives & KOS Social Club. Here you can learn about some of the history of KOS and find many other tales of the realms. Also here is the much talked about Book of Destiny. Who knows perhaps the Book will end it’s silence during the event…Adventurous travelers may also wish to drop a facet stone and visit Elysium in Fel. This proud player-ran town has diminished in size, but still boasts many fine establishments, including the Wandering Wisp Tavern. This invitation is open to anyone and everyone…come share in this expansion of a great town. Thank you, Valdor Canz Knight ________ Barret's, eh? I smell a round of ale coming on, with plenty of coffee to help my hangover in the morn.... |

General Virus Warning |
Just a quick heads up to everyone that we have received reports that a couple new viruses may be circulating throughout the UO community, especially through e-mail attachments. As a general rule, do not EVER open attachments in which you did not specifically ask for or from someone you do not know. If you are not sure if you have received a virus, delete the message and run a virus scan on your PC. Of course, if you are spending any amount of time on the internet or with e-mail, you should always have an Anti-Virus Program running no matter what. If you do not, do so immediately with your favorite program or for a free trial Antivirus Program you can head over to Symantec (Norton) now. In addition, were received the following details from our Network folks on a specific Virus making its around throughout the MMOG communities: This has been an ongoing issue now for about 36 hours and I just wanted to send out a reminder for you all to be very careful of any emails that have attachments and have the following body of text: |

The Rise of a New Government? |
I found this interesting proposal/post from Lich Soulstealer over at the UO Boards, below is the outline of Lich's "new" government: Since the creation of Sonoma, we have gone rather leaderless by means of a figurehead "king" if you will. The same is true on all shards. I think we can change that and give sonoma an actual RP "dark age" where everyone from the newest newbie to the most vetran player can have an affect on what is happening in the realm at any given time. Some of you may have noticed my earlier post on the creation of Churches of Vecna in Fel and Tram....well the responce was good enough to get over 10 with 5 more on the way in fel and tram. The churches are the foundation of this grand undertaking. Once order and chaos have been replaced with a new form of "idealistic concept" then LB and Blackthorn. What is needed is an allience of guilds on both facets so that together we can actually rule our shard under one banner...As usual Lich Soulstealer has come up with another interesting and exciting idea. I encourage you all to participate since it sounds like there will be something for everyone. Best of Luck Lich Soulstealer! --Sage Arthur |

Report: First Mission to Recover the Blade of Legend |
Many thanks to Senechal for posting a report from last night's quest on the Stratics Sonoma Board. I have included a copy of the message below: Many names of note started showing up at the Britainian Race Tracks early last night. There were over 20 people that showed up that had some interest in one result or the other or our planned endeavor (I know this because I tried to hand a rune to QLOS (Questor's Library of Sonoma) to everyone that showed up). Shaddow Knight finally arrived, and quickly ran out of copies of the book that he had recovered that gave us clues as to where to look next.Very well written, thank you for the report. To recap though, the next meeting to discover the Blade will take place next Wednesday at 8pm PST. However, this Sunday at 12 noon PST Senechal will sponsor a treasure hunt. I assume that all of the events will meet at the Britain Racetrack. --Sage Arthur |

She also later added the following comments in regard to OSI/Player communication and their need sometimes to have a bit of secrecy: LOL - if you're expecting a swift answer after 9:00 pm, Vrin, I hate to say it, but you may not always get it. Uzell Cabal and the Iron Brigade are organizing an attack on the orcish forces! Uzell looked up at the clock as he tried to rub the cramp out of his ink stained hand. "Has it taken this long?" he thought to himself wondering if all this work would be in vain. Behind him, he heard the grumbles and murmurs of fifty other scribes busily inking the same letter he had been working on. Though he had it memorized and would never again in his life be able to forget its text, he picked up his two thousandth copy and decided to read it before putting on the seal. |

My good friends at Marrach Faol just dropped this off at the home office. I thought you might get a giggle from it.As the sun set, the crackling of the ether could be heard as blue gates opened in the courtyard, warriors and mages streaming out and into the castle's great hall. The time for the hunt was near and the assembled hunters grew restless. Warriors sharpened their blades, while the magi checked their supplies one last time. In the corner, a ranger calmed her hellsteed, all awaiting the call to form up. |

Star Traveler or Madman? |
Greetings, pilgrims. I've received some odd and mysterious messages over the years, but few can rival the missive I recently discovered shoved beneath the door of my humble cottage. Read on and judge for yourselves. As the solitary figure somberly gazed out of the window of his lonely tower, he remembers how he got to this place in his life. It seems so long ago, yet he knows it has been less than a year. He had been on routine patrol when the stargate opened right on top of him and the Azurai fighter appeared. He knew his scoutship had little chance against the fighter and his only escape was through the gate. The fighter's first shot sent the scoutship spinning into the stargate.Scoutships? Stargates? Azurai fighter? The ramblings of a madman, or truly, the wondrous account of a traveler from beyond the stars? My first thought was that perhaps my Druid Brethren were having a bit of fun at my expense. Then, I suspected that the author of this journal had simply indulged in "one pint too many" of that foul orcish swill. I have firsthand knowledge of the powers of Dwarven spirits and Orcish brews and know full well how either can distort a fellow's way of thinking. But having read the tale a second and third time, it seems to me that the author's convictions are sincere. And since I can offer no empirical evidence to either support or debunk the author's claims, I shall simply keep a wary eye for further news of this man and his claims. Cyn the Cynical |

Attendance for these events is always good but with so many prizes, your chances of winning are high and the prizes are well worth your time. All Syndicate events are free. We provide gates from major banks starting 30min before the event start time. We provide gates back after each event. Exact start times and further event details will be on this news site in the near future! Check back for details. In the mean time you can get involved in some weekly AD events. Every Thursday night at our castle in Trammel, we host a Craftsman Night. GM smiths, tinkers, carpenters, poisoners, alchemists, cooks and more will be on hand. Gates are provided from the major banks. We offer Free item repairs to all who attend and also free item CREATES if you supply the raw materials. Several dozen people take advantage of this service each week. Watch your local Trammel bank at about 6:30pm EST each Thursday. Also we maintain a Treasure Map Rune Library in both Trammel and Felucca. You can visit the AD webpage (linked above) and lookup your decoded map. Find the rune number that corresponds to your map. Go to either the Felucca or Trammel library and locate that rune and recall. You will appear within 1 space of your chest. Simply dig it up and pick the lock. There is nearly always something going on at Arx Draconis whether its events, well stocked vendors of all types or treasure hunters using the library. When bartender NPCs are added you will also find ongoing quests you can complete and thus be entered for big prizes as well. The Syndicate looks forward to seeing you on Arx Draconis soon. ----------------- And I know the question on everyone's mind - how many scavengers will we have to kill to win the scavenger hunt? |

More Tribal Mask Shades |
Thanks to the efforts of Scin, it appears that there are more shades of Tribal Masks than originally reported below: I have a bit of info on those Tribal masks. I saw in your article that Talon Wardruid sent a pic of the Masks and he has 26 of them (26 shades that is) I have found there to be 29 shades. The way I found this out was by dropping them on each other in my pack, many are the same color but those that look the same can be dropped on the others and you will see a definet shade change I was amazed and delighted as you can imagine. I now have all 29 shades as you can see in this Pic, *grins* Please feel free to share this info. Thanks Scin! --Sage Arthur |

A Meeting at the Orc Cave |
Today, I was invited to witness a meeting between Lord Grey Wolfe of the OSS, and Grunk of EAI, who as of late had a warrant out for his arrest. I met with Grey Wolfe and another Silver Serpent, Woodsman at the Boars Head at Harmony. After a short chat, we took a gate to the Orc Cave near Yew, where Grunk has apparently been hiding from the authorities. He met us at the entrance of the caves, and we went inside. After a short fight with Grunk's guard dogs, we went further into the cave, away from where he keeps his pets. There Grunk explained how the orcs want the strange savages out of their homes. He then took us on a short tour of the orcs temporary home, including a small garden they had built. Here we have what could best be described as an orcs ritual room. Grey Wolfe also removed the warrant from Grunk, but as of this writing the warrant for other EAI members still stands. For more information, check out the High Council's website, or the website of the OSS. Order of the Silver Serpents High Council |

A Subtle Warning From the Blood Eagles |
Greetings, pilgrims. Today, I recieved a message from my brother-in-arms, Amadeo Disante. When I asked him if I should address the missive to anyone in particular, he smiled and said that I should just address it to "Whom It May Concern." He added that "...and They know who they are." Thus, I present the message from Amadeo, Minister of War for the Blood Eagles. To Whom It May Concern:There you have it, fellow citizens. The message seems clear. I shall report any and all responses, forthwith. Until next we meet, safe journeys to you, one and all. Cyn |

More on the Coming of the Maid |
Who is the Maid? What is her role? More clues in this scroll, sent to us by Xaziel Cresgrave. A full two months have gone by since I last heard the strange sounds that followed me everywhere I went. At first I didn't know what any of it meant. What I did know was that my connection to the spirit world was growing stronger and stronger. Now I seem to be able to understand perfectly what any spirit in the realm has to say. Little did I know, on this night, how that would lead me into what would be the greatest adventure of my life, and perhaps the most dangerous. |

Can you imagine when I was sitting at my desk today going through the news articles when a posse of orcs busted down my door. I thought I'd have to teach them some manners when they apologized for being over zealous and pleaded with me to print this story. I looked it over. It was from Ambassador Orkie. I told them as soon as they fixed the door I would write it up. They quickly got to work. Hail friends! |

Spreading Cheer |
It's not everyday that you notice a Santa Claus "ho ho ho"ing and giving gifts to all the good girls and boys at your local bank. Especially in uhh.. *cough* July?! That's just what I found the other day. I took a few moments to find out more about the jolly fellow. Here's what he had to say: Me: So Santa, you're always "Santa"? In character that is. Santa: Yes, I deliver presents to the good little boys and girls. Me: Any plans for Christmas this year? Santa: Yes, actually I'm planning on prebuilding bags of goodies to distribute. Me: And how long have you been spreading cheer? Santa: Until a week ago, I've stayed in seclusion here [his workshop] building skills. Since, I've completed my training in carpentry, tailoring, and a bit of magery... Me: And what of your elves? Santa: The elves are on vacation. They have a pretty strong Union. Santa then told me of some of his visits. He furnished his neighbor with a house of furniture and bag of clothes along with his random goodie drops at the bank. Me: Any conditions attached to your gifts? Santa: It upsets Santa when people sell what he's made. I then made a comment on his tribal mask collection.. Santa: The savages are simply misunderstood. They love Christmas too! As a closing comment Santa added... Santa: I do think its a crime that people cant display their Christmas trees all year round. Santa's house is empty without a tree. And Santa wishes for more do gooders on Sonoma. Well there you have it folks.. Merry.. umm.. July to you all :) |

Castle Battle Royal at Silvervale! |
Once I wandered into the orc camp near Skara Brae, and a greenish brew was cooking in the cauldron. Something came over me and before I knew it, I had eaten their stew. I still wonder to this day what was in it. Hummies? Some questions are best left unanswered. I do believe, however, that it brought out the inner orc in me. This event, sent in by Ilina le Kyteler, sounds like just the thing for my Orcish-like days! Calling All Guilds! |
The UOSS staff will be hosting a shard wide guild recruitment event. The general idea is for players (young and veteran) to have a chance to browse the various guilds on the shard that are currently in a recruitment process. From true role-playing guilds to RoX'rs, new guilds and old, every guild on the shard is welcome to submit their name to be included in this event. We are planning on using Lord British's castle in Trammel to host the event. Each guild will be assigned a room that they can use any way they wish. Maps will be provided directing the guest to the various guild rooms. What we need from the guilds that are interested:

OrB and SoE games report |
he SoE and OrB guilds event of military training and fun went well last sunday. Both allied guilds participated and war'd honourably. OrB quickly dominated the fight with Knights and Mages. Although admitedly our friends SoE put up quite a fight inside the Abbey and picking a few of my OrB bretheran off one by one from the entrance and firing from the roof!! Which was impressive. Meanwhile the first wave or OrB Knights go on a killing spree within. OrB and SoE are holding excercises together for the fun of it and the sharpening of our waring skills for future enemies of Darkness ie: ORC. As perceived good alignment guilds its the only thing we should do fight darkness and hold a few events to support the orders and the shard of Oceania. I also recommend other guilds to do the same as we had much fun! We have sceduled more events for our guilds and one day soon hope to include other alike guilds that follow Terms of War. GM's of both guilds meet and exchange best wishes of victory! OrB the Second wave of Knights to attack! OrB Knights rush the Empath Abbey deafeating some defenders. Both allies SoE and OrB Dead await outcome fo Battle while fought inside to the last man or woman standing. Well this gives some insight into how the event went.. they are only small snaps of what went on and does'nt realy show the real rush you have when stroming a heavily defended Abbey! ..and on a brighter note the the courtesy's shown between both guilds. OrB and SoE don't realy care about who wins, as we are allied guilds, but in that we have fun and have future events and good training for war for some of our members. |

Peace Treaty Signed in Britain |
Blessed by wonderful weather and a starry night, the first Parade of the Towns of Britannia was a vision to behold, as it wound its way through the streets of Britain. The Parade took off on schedule, led by the ladies Minsk and Winmere of Paxlair, and Sabrina Nor of Corwyn. It crossed into the west side of the city over the Northern Bridge, regaling the viewers lining the streets with the sight of the wonderful uniforms worn by the various guilds. In rows as neat as their feisty white horses would allow, the Guild of the Saints marched in a spectacle of glacial staffs and red capes. Leading the Guild of the Night Watch and representing the town of Casandreal, Lord Rhuarc and his black clad friends were much more somber, and yet handsome, in black and grey. There was more to this night, however, than just revelry and pageantry, as exciting as those may be. The last stop on the parade was the Castle of Lord British, whom we thank for allowing its usage. As the revelers piled up in the Throne Room, a momentous event occured: the signing of the Treaty of Peace between the towns of Nidaros, Mythndale, Casandreal, Shadowcove, Paxlair and Corwyn. It stipulates in simple terms that all towns shall be at peace with each other. It also marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation towards a common goal: the promotion of more events like this one! I just love parades. *smiles happily* An auction and a party with a bounty of food and drinks followed the signing, and although it is probably still going on as I write, I have been assured that the Castle will be left spotless and neat. The Treaty will be available for public viewing as soon as copies of it are distributed to the different towns. |

Patch 12: Murder Counts And Reg Spawn |
Seems like patch 12 has more in it than we thought: First: According to our own boards you can now see how much and especially what type of murder counts you have. Try "I must consider my sins" and see how much Short, Long and Ping-Pong counts you have. Second: Believing some posts at the uo.com-boards now we have brand new reg spawn with 400 to 999 regs every 10 to 15 minutes on the reg vendors. Since this should be active on the Chesapeake Shard, I guess we will hear much more from it. Hopefully the reg spawn won't be taken away! Addition: We now got confirmation from CrazyJoe (UOSS) that both things are true and activ on the Chesa-Shard. Lets hope it's not a bug, and we will see these changes coming to other shards ASAP. |

Cynthe On The New Harassment Policy |
Adressing a lot of player concerns of missusing the new harassment policy, here is a post from Cynthe about that. I put in the original questions, so you won't get confused again: Cynthe, I'm sure that consolidating the various methods of reporting problems is a step in the right direction and the fact that the GM's have been a part of this move is encouraging. With that said though, I don't think that this addresses what the real problem in UO is (as far as harassment in general goes). Answer from Cynthe: I do see your point, and it's one that was discussed at length. But in every case of policy, there are two major things to consider. |

Quest Sculpture Design Contest! |
Hail and well met! While lounging around Britain's West Bank the other day, I watched the horde of fellow citizens hocking their newly acquired "tribal spears", "tribal masks", as well as a few other things that may have held some value to a select few. While I listened to these rantings about the magnificence of these new items, an idea sparked in my mind. I quickly rushed home and tried this idea out a few times myself (with poor results due to my artistically challenged hands). But I had still found a new way for citizens to use their minds and imaginations to create great works of art! By using a few orcish kin masks, a nose helm, and a spear, I had created what I dubbed an "Orcish Guard"! *snicker* Anyway, with that aside, I would like to let it be known that I am hosting a contest not driven by how high your taming or magery is or how much money you can waste, but a contest that tests the ability of your mind. In this contest, you will be using new quest items to create sculptures of your own. Then, we ask that you take a screenshot of the sculpture, crop the picture please (leave out unimportant parts of the picture in other words), and send it to us here at the Napa Valley Sculpture Contest. Now there are, of course, some rules. Here they are.
I draw this message to a close with these words: Let's get sculpting! Snake of Moonglow |

Balhalaban reports on current orc/savage situation |
This finely detailed account of the current events is brought to us by our friend Sir Balhalaban: Recently, I'm sure you've all heard of this new orc cave that is within the Orc Valley. It is real I can assure you all of that, and it is also quite dangerous. Last eve, I took my first trip into the cave accompanied by no one as I was unsure of the danger factor, but I did take along a few orcish kin masks to assure that I would be safe from the orcs whom I side with on this scenario. This new cave was filled with many and interesting things, including those new orc brutes who, as I found out, hit extremely hard. I was on my mage and in one hit I was dropped from 100 hit points to 25 and when I attempted to teach the scoundrel a lesson I was soon to realize it's spell resistance was quite high, for several of my best flamestrike's did but mere damage to him. He even laughed at me. It was quite embarassing. A few new things I found in the cave were "an orcish drilling device," obviously what these orcs used to dig their new home to stay away from those dreadful savages who won't leave them alone. Also I found some sort of a shrine to what I'm guessing are the orcish gods, there were "orcish idols" about the place and trees tall and short surrounding this sacred place. For those of you who, like me, side with the orcs, I suggest that upon entrance to this cave you bring supplies because I found dire wolves, corpsers, and I've heard from others that there are earth elementals in the cave as well. I took the liberty of exploring the shard on both facets and their was not much difference, side the fact that Felluca's was littered with greys and overspawned. I suggest that all who read this immediatly go and see this new marvel of ours. It's quite an interesting thing indeed and I must applaud the orcs on their survival tactics for they have eluded the savages for quite some time. Now there are several new savages as well. I went to the city of Cove once again on both facets and discovered a new savage shaman. This mighty savage casts up to 7th circle spells and wears a deer mask, it's not quite worth the time of day to kill them in my opinion as they had little more than a bag of minimal regs and around 100gp each. Their are also new savages riding what looked like bright yellow ostards. These are ridgebacks. Quite an interesting creature and the tactics for taming them are interesting, too. I had to use a bola on the savage to dismount him and then I proceeded to tame the ridgeback. It takes about the same level of skill required to tame a frenzied ostard and yet it is available to all to ride regardless of skill levels in animal taming and animal lore. The ridgebacks are quite weak, however, and they're not really worth having unless you want to have this "cool yellow ostard," so to speak. To end my report, I wish you all good luck on your adventures and I must suggest that everyone explore these new marvels. Who knows what you can find of interest in "The Orc Cave" and perhaps the savage shamans will carry yet another new goodie for all of us to toy with. Farewell, my fellow Britannians and to all a good day! -Sir Balhalaban- I have not ventured to the cave myself, but I did have the wits frightened out of me by Jheli Beene. Somehow, he managed to get his mitts on some of those berries and concocted body paint. I came into the Stratics Centre rather late and he jumped out at me from the patio, shaking a spear. He was lucky I'd left my bow in the bank or he'd have been a goner. Thank you so much, Sir Balhalaban, for this in-depth report. |

New Orc Cave Proves Dangerous |
Hail and well met, Citizens of Sosaria. It's common knowledge by now, that a new and mysterious orc cave as suddenly appeared in the old Rat Valley. The cave is easily found and within quick walking distance from the Cross Roads, west of Britain. For those who've not yet had an opportunity to visit the cave, it may be a good idea to go with a small party of trusted comrades. I made several trips into the area last night, and was met each time by dozens of orcs, ettins, ogres and a dire wolf, or two. Now, while that may not sound daunting to the more experienced explorer, I can only say that on 2 occasions, I had over 25 hostile critters on my screen. And all of them were intent on relieving me of one body part or another. Upon entering the cave, I was met by another hostile collection of Orc Choppers, Mages and Lords. A bit further into the cave, I came "face-to-pug ugly face" with the Orc Brute. The Brute hits like a Titan and has a very high level of magic resist. I'll not bore you with my "other" experiences in the cave. I wouldn't want to spoil any surprises. *grins* Now, having issued a timely warning of caution, I'll give you some very simple directions to the cave. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the area known as Rat Valley, the following route will take you straight to the cave, with little chance of becoming lost. As you come through the mountain pass, west of Britain, turn right into the forest (northwest) and just follow the mountain. The area is heavily wooded and the route seems longer than it really is, due to the twisting and turning through the trees. In actuality, it's about a brisk 5-7 minute walk from the Britain West Bank. The mountainside continues on and curves back to the North, then east. Just follow the contour of that mountain range and it'll take you directly to the new cave. Of course, you can always buy a rune to the cave from any number of explorers. I saw several runes sold at prices ranging from 300-600 gold. If anyone has the coordinates to the cave, please send it to me and I'll pass it along. **Note to Marco Polo** I noticed that you were heading into the cave as I was leaving. I hope you'll soon grace us with a full report of your adventures in this newest addition to Sosaria Cyn |

Copperpot Reports on New Orcs and Savages |
Greetings, pilgrims. That wandering bard, Copperpot, has sent another message regarding the recent appearances of new savages and orcs, and his encounters with both. Read on. Hail my good friend, Cyn. I call upon you again in these dire times to inform the good people of our fair land of new and disturbing developments, the foremost of which are the sudden appearance of the new class of savages. The Savage Shaman perform up to level 7 magery and can be pick out of the masses the Deer mask they wear, which like with the rest of the masked savages, is part of there loot along with a lil' bag of regs, 1 to 4 of each reg, the best I can tell, and an empty backpack. Perhaps the backpack contains some item that disappears should the Shaman not be dispatched, quickly enough. The Shaman also carries roughly 100 gold, give or take a lil.'I thank you for this report, friend Copperpot. And I appreciate all the information pouring in from across the land. I'll not print anything that could possibly spoil future surprises but will release the info as soon as the first wave of brave explorers have had an opportunity to experience the new developments, firsthand. And to be sure, more "stuff" looms on the horizon. Until next we meet, safe journeys to ye, one and all. And watch for those Orc Brutes. They're nasty, indeed. Cyn |

Calandryll About The Orc-Scenario |
Calandryll made two interresting postings about the current scenario over at the uo.com-boards, here is the first one:1) The town defense in Trinsic lasted several days and the finale was many hours long, thus insuring massive numbers of players participated. (I understand massive numbers means lag, but I think you wanted massive numbers, right?)The second posting is contains some information about the length of the scenario and the final battle: The scenario ended too soon, (although many of the towns were still being attacked last night during prime-time) but we already hard at work on the next one and will take the learning from this one with us. The dynamic ending was probably hyped too much by me, something I am usually better at managing. That said, there was far more to this than that ending, which was only one part of the scenario as a whole. |

Meet the Savages |
That's right, we finally know what all those Orcs have been frightened of. Here's the preliminary report that our own FatherGanja made on the discovery of Savages: I started in Cove, to see how the town closest to the fort was fairing. It was a battlefield. Dead orcs and humans everywhere, with a pile of 20 bodies around the healers(there was a scout camped outside picking off the newly resurrected). The first thing I noticed was the red named Savage Npc'sAnd here's some more information from our own Feenicks: They have a spear, bone arm and leg armour, and in the bag, a few bandages and around 30-40 gold. When Calandryll was complimented by a player on how good the savages look, he had this to say: Thanks, although I have to give credit to our artists for that one as I can barely draw a box. :PAnd something else worth noting from Calandryll: The majority of savage names are named after OSI staff, mostly Dev and QA. I changed the names to make them sound more in keeping with what a savage might be called. There is one called Kahl too. :)You can noticed this in one of the images above. Sinthe remind you of anyone? Or perhaps this one here; Ogger? Our tamer forum moderator, Mordanna, had this warning to add: If you value your pets, do not take them to fight the new savage NPCs!Calandryll commented on how this ability of the savages to take on such large beasts fits into their planned lore: Well, the fiction for it is that savages are adept at taking on large (think things like wooly mammoths - or in UO terms, dragons) and/or deamonic creatures (deamons, nightmares, etc.). They understand where the weak spots are and are able to do more damage. I don't consider this a nerf though, but it does represent some challenges for tamers. You can't simply bring in two dragons and let them run into the fort...they'll die. Now you have to keep track of your pets, heal them, and make sure they don't take on more than they can handle. And this: Well, let me put it this way. Savages are tough against a dragon, no doubt about that. But dragons can eat a lone savage alive virtually every time, especially if the dragon is being healed. Savages do lots of damage when they hit a dragon, but they don't hit all the time. Their weapon skill is less than that of a dragon, so the dragon (along with it's breath and spells) hit a LOT more often. But yes, people need to change their tactics with their pets. They can't just meander into a spawn and let their dragons loose against savages. Our Items and Artifacts Archivist, Courage, put together this great collection of the 29 different new colors of Savage Masks.
The 30th color is the original unhued tribal mask that we already had in game. Calandryll confirmed it with this comment: Correct. The savages have 29 colors, plus the regular ones. Some of the colors are very similar, but there are 29 different hue numbers in the range. Now that you have your new hued tribal mask, you may be wondering where you can get that fabulous body tatoo from. Well wonder no more. The body tatoo comes from tribal paint. Tribal paint is made by those with the cooking skill out of berries carried by female savages. The tribal paint either wears off after death or can be cleaned off with the use of an oil cloth. Here's what our own Phil of Europa had to report on his first findings: Berries are spawning on female savages, it seems to be about 1 in 3 carry them, a similar proportion to the masks.Doc Brown of the Britannia Society of Chefs(BSC) gave us some more details on the savage body paint: 80 cooking is the required skill.I'd like to thank all the Stratics researchers that have helped so much in gathering all this information as well as the readers that report to us. |

In Memory of the Late, Great Chaos/Order Wars |
Greetings, pilgrims. A few weeks ago, I chanced upon a conversation between Melinko, Welper and several others regarding UO trivia and points of minor interest that have all but faded to dust. Among the issues discussed was that of Order and Chaos. One only has to sit near the Britain Bank and observe in order to realize that the Order/Chaos wars are a mere shadow of their former, glorious selves. It was this fact that prompted a discussion of the whole Order/Chaos issue. Now, being that I am both an editorial writer as well as an event reporter, (a duality of nature that drives my poor editor, Ith'unk, up the orc fort wall) I thought of writing an article, lamenting the demise of the Order/Chaos struggle. Then it occurred to me that perhaps only the "old timers" would understand or appreciate such a perspective as I might have. And I mean that only in the sense that Order and Chaos do not represent the same ideal today as they did, in the early days of UO. Originally, Ultima was a "plot-driven" world in which the events and environment were created around a supremely constructed storyline. The thing that made UO unique was that the "storyline" never dominated the gameplay, but rather enhanced it. It gave Sosaria a certain "flavor," yet allowed citizens the opportunity to forge their own niche in the Ultima world. And in those days, Order vs. Chaos was a critical element of the environment. The original "storyline" of Ultima was a fascinating piece of work, both in scope and social relevance. It contained elements of issues that went far beyond the timeworn conflict between "good and evil." I'll give you a brief example. In the original story, Lord British was a champion of Order. Now, that's not to say that Order was "good." It wasn't intended to represent either "good" nor "evil." Lord British saw "Order" as sequential growth, using well constructed plans and purpose. Blackthorn on the other hand, who also happened at one time to be Lord British's best friend, was the champion of Chaos. It was his belief that Chaos represented new and dynamic growth. He further believed that "order" was stagnant and that without a "chaotic influence" the land would shrivel and die. Thus, from these two opposing philosophies came the Order/Chaos wars. And the wars were magnificent affairs, with dozens upon dozens of warriors battling in the myriad streets of Sosaria. In those days, the great heater and Roman style shields of Order and Chaos were far more than "extra armor" or decoration. They represented grand philosophies. Of course, they DID look sharp and there's no denying the appeal of equipping a parry warrior with one of those nearly indestructible pieces of hardware. But somewhere along the way, the ideals of philosophy gave way to a simpler, though errant mindset. The error of this idea was that "order was the cause championed by Lord British, therefore it must be good." Likewise, "British opposed the ideals of dynamic, unfettered growth...i.e. Chaos, therefore Chaos must be evil." And it seemed that many citizens were inclined to gravitate toward that "bad guy" image and Chaos guilds started to spring up like weeds in a cotton field. And as Chaos grew, Order shrank. Many days, Chaos warriors rode tired circles around the streets of Britain, with nary an Order warrior to be found. And few things will frustrate a pvper like the absence of an opponent. The end result was that without adversaries to fight, Chaos guilds grew bored and quit the field. And today, the historic Chaos/Order conflict represents little more than fond memories. I've heard that in some parts of the multifaceted Ultima Universe, the Chaos/Order wars still continue, as hotly contested as in earlier times. I can't verify or deny these rumors, I can only speculate. But some small part of me hopes that the wars still continue on, in another place, in another time. The ideals that drove the proud Chaos and Order warriors are both as valid today as they were in days of yore. To those who ever bore the Shields of British or Blackthorn and to those who still carry forth the fight, I salute you. Cyn |

FYI - Orc Masks and Savage Paint |
Posted on the FYI Section of the official UO Site :Many players have been asking about the new masks of orcish kin and the savage tribal paint and how they work. While most players have figured out the mask will explode if you attack an orc and the paint will burn if you attack a savage, there are many other interactions that are designed into these masks. In order to clear up some confusion, the list below should clarify some of these interactions. Note the examples are all in reference to the mask of orcish kin and orcs, but they all hold true for tribal paint and savages as well. |

A Young Reporter Leaves Home |
Idun whispers soothingly to her nervous horse. She loads its back with a small backpack, containing a sleeping bag, an axe to chop wood, an old sword and a book containing the few words of power she has learned from her mother. This trip will not take her far, but as she is only a young woman who is far from being skilled, or strong, or learned in any craft, her defenses are meager. Would the scroll identifying her as a reporter get her through the rough spots? She can only hope. To enemies other than human though, her piece of parchment would not sway the creatures from their murderous instincts. She ponders staring them down, but from what she has been able to tell in her short life, this does not seem to work well. Fear is far from her mind however, and it does not touch her on this beautiful evening. She enjoys the Fire Isle scenery around her with a smile on her lips. In her heart, she feels nothing but joy and gratitude for all the friends she has met, who helped her and guided her, who came running to her rescue when she needed them, and for whom she would do the same without hesitation. Her hope is that one day she will be able to repay them, but until then she will write, bringing people knowledge of far off places and events. At the shore, with furious waves crashing violently on the rocks and the setting sun colouring the waters a bloodlike red, Idun pauses. Time to speak those words. She grins broadly. Wherever she goes, new friends and new adventures will find her! What a privilege to be able to write about them! Slowly, her mouth forms the words, "Kal Ort Por". |

And the Winner Is..... |
Sunday's Fight Night was a fight on more than one level, as griefers tried (and on some levels succeeded) in spoiling the fights. There was some interference with fighters by spectators standing outside the walls. After some discussion, smitten w love decided to let the results of those fights that were interfered with stand. The interference impacted many fighters and many matches, and there was no way to go back and rework every fight. smitten w love has stated that fighters should view spectator interference from outside the pits as yet another challenge to overcome as they attempt to prove they are the best PvPer on the shard. Outside the pits, Notos worked the crowd, circling repeatedly hoping to find a gray name. Spectators are urged to avoid any act that might brand them a criminal, as the many players who stayed blue seemed to have little trouble. This week, Cap'n Howdy took home the prize (a set of one of every possible piece of armor in gold ore, donated by Bob McForge) for "Most Original PvP move." His opponent summoned an EV, and Howdy used Peacemake and dispel to get rid of the threat. A PvP bard? The crowd gawked. Howdy went on to win his match! A GOOD PvP bard???? The crowd went wild! Well done, Howdy! Snoop (pictured at the top deftly poisoning an opponent) took home 10K for winning third place. Second Place (and 30K) went to Demon, who took third place last week. Having placed both times, Demon is hungry for the big win next week. Beware! This week's winner was KMSEMPERFI, who won 60K and the chance to compete in for a Million GP in the Final Fight-Off. |

Fixes on Orc Mask and War Paint and UO3D Titles |
It appears that at least some (if not all) of the fixes for issues with orcs masks and war paint will be in on Wednesday. In response to I'm just wondering when that healing patch is going in. Since it's a real pain to run around as a savage when you can't heal while fighting Orcs or for 2 minutes after that. Calandryll replied on the UO Boards : The fix for healing with regards to orc kin masks and savage paint will be in on each shard's Wednesday maintenance, with the exception of Chessie since it will be getting the publish previous to this one. All other shards will have the fix. And in response to we found a side effect to (war) paint thats rather amusing :) Calandryll replied That's fixed too. Will be active this Wednesday. In response to a query on the UO Boards about UO3D titles : Secondly, with publish 12 is the whole system (relating to UO3D titles) now in, and if theres a 3rd tier, will it stick longer (presumably for the amount of effort it would take to get it)? FieryIce (Programmer UO) replied Yes, the system is completed in Publish 12. As far as making your titles last longer you just need to kill the more difficult monsters. I can't give you specific numbers but killing harder monsters essentially gives you more time to keep your title. I can tell you that getting the 3rd tier of titles does involve a little bit more than just killing lots and lots of monsters though... . |

A Tale of Youth, Music and Amour |
Hail and well met, pilgrims. Today, I thought I'd share with you an amusing conversation that I chanced to overhear in the fair city of Britain. I was standing near the front door of the Conservatory of Music when I heard the Headmaster assigning rooms to new students. "The ladies shall room in the west wing and all men shall be assigned rooms in the east wing," stated the Headmaster. "Furthermore, for the duration of your studies, male students are not allowed to enter the ladies quarters for any reason."I hope that you, each and everyone, enjoy a wonderful day in the land of Sosaria. Copperpot Warns of Bardic Woes |
Greetings, pilgrims. Today I received a most interesting tale from an old and trusted comrade, Copperpot. He tells of an unusual encounter with the mysterious savages in the besieged city of Cove. Read on. Cyn, my old friend, I have something to share with you that concerns the Bards of the land. Today while trying out my pretty savage makeup, I decided to go to Cove Orc Fort and see what Orc lords I could pick off in the crowd of the hungry savages. As you all know by now, savages and orcs attack each other on sight. Upon entering the city, I quickly spotted a couple of likely orcs and began weaving my spell of music.Mersakes! This could well be tragic for the unsuspecting bard! I would be interested in knowing if any of our other fine bards have had similar experiences. Until next we meet, I bid thee safe journeys, one and all. Cyn |

VKR mall festival |
Hail fellow citizens of Brittania The Virtuous Knights of the Realms are having a festival to help re launch the VKR mall. For those who don't know the mall is a marble house east of Britain comprising of 27 vendors selling anything from rare's to weapons and anything and everything in between. The festival will have food, ale, PvP demonstrations by VKR and VKT members, a scavenger hunt and other games. Plus its a great chance to have a social gathering of people. Providing all goes well we will also have a treasure hunt afterwards so if ye have any level 1, 2,3 or 4 maps ye have wanted to do for a while bring them along and our resident cartographer will read the maps and take a group of people there to fight the monsters while you get the stuff out of the chest. There will be a limit on how many we can do so it is first in first serve. You are probably wondering when this will occur or at least i hope you are *grins*. It will be this Sunday the 15th at 6pm EST. There will be gates opening at west Britain bank and the Britain moon gate ( trammel ) from 5:45 till 6:15. Just look for the people in the Blue and White uniforms. If ye cant make it for those times the co ordinates are 36o 28'N 43o 1'E or if that makes no sense leave Britain by the east road and head though the forest. When the forest ends the mall is the first marble house on the right hand side. For more information please ICQ Brannon on 92344436 or email me at this address [email protected] Hope to see you all there Brannon - Knight Errant of VKR |

Stratics Centre holds grand opening |
The Stratics Center opened its doors last Monday with a celebration attended by over three dozen well-wishers. Scavenger hunt winner Astrid Nightwind won 50k for her efforts. The original prize of 25k was generously matched by Ian Flemming. The list contained 50 items, with a net worth of about 850 gp's. None were rares, but some were not readily available, such as an arm. Barth VanDorn put the list together in a way that anyone who wished to participate would stand a good chance of winning, no matter their status in Britannia.
Winners of the Art in a Box competition were: Dax Shaddon, first; Rinoa Heartily, second; and Redlance, third. Dax’s earnings were: 25k, a Message in a Bottle, and a pair of black sandals. Rinoa took home 15k and a Message in a bottle. Redlance won 10k. The winning creations are pictured here. Thunders took top honors in the storytelling competition for his prose entitled “The Ring,” with Indigo and Azrael respectively winning second and third. Prizes awarded were 25k, 15k, and 10k. Thunders declined his winnings, asking that the check be returned to the till for future events. He also donated an additional 100k to sweeten the prizes for the grand opening. Special guests of the evening were Xena Dragon and Ce’Nedra Willow whose surprise appearances delighted everyone. Lady Ce’Nedra was one of the judges in the Art in a Box contest. The Stratics crew would like to thank everyone who participated and especially these folks who assisted with the opening: Eaglefellow, along with his brethren from the Order of the Crimson Wolves (OCW) Guild, Sylph, Superfly (+n+) Guild, Magellan and Noleeens. |

Starr Long Speaks About UO, UWO:O and Tabula Rasa |
The folks over at GameSpot did a nice job reviewing the cancelation of UWO:O including a look back when UO was merely alone on the game market. In their long review of the events finally leading to the death of UO2 they included a 7 page long interview with Starr Long, who speaks about UO, the making of Ultima Worlds Online: Origin and the things they are planning to do with Tabula Rasa, the game currently developed by Destination Games, the company he co-founded with Richard and Robert Garriot. Here is a little piece from the review:While UWO: Origin was canceled, many of the innovations that were to be introduced by the game will likely appear in some form in the future. Earlier this year, Origin released the Third Dawn expansion, another significant enhancement to Ultima Online. While the update retains the game's previous look and feel, it notably introduces 3D characters and monsters and a substantial amount of new territory to explore. Rick Hall, the senior producer of Ultima Online's ongoing development, has indicated that we can continue to expect new content to be produced for the game. There are currently about 20 employees at Origin working on content development, and the game is still gaining popularity. There are now approximately 240,000 ongoing subscribers to the game, and last year, that subscriber base grew by almost 50 percent. Ultima Online has been extremely successful worldwide, particularly in Japan, where the game has a devoted following. So while its sequel was cancelled, Ultima Online is going to continue to be around for a long time. |

Sonoma Reacts to the Orc Scenario |
Its Been weeks since we first heard Dudagog's Tale, since we first saw an orcish mask of kin... We had no idea what we were getting into. Now that the story has unfolded a bit, there are two obvious sides, the savages and the orcs. I decided that it was about time to find out what our shard thought of this quest. Are people rooting for the savages or the orcs? The following is a collection of interviews I collected to get an idea of how we as a shard are reacting to all this, enjoy :) The first interview (Lord tamer) Me: Do you think that scenarios such as the current orc/savage happenings enhance your UO experience? Lord tamer (Lt): yes Me: What was your favorite item introduced during this scenario so far? Lt: Well I have to 2, I like the tribal berries and the orcish kin mask. You can put them on and spy on them [orcs and savages]and makes them think your one of them. Me: If you dont mind me asking, which side do you favor? The orcs or savages and why? Lt: Well I have to say the orcs side. There seems to be more of them in some towns like were I go in cove there orcs all over and I like to be safe and the savages are not to hard to kill and the orcs bombers hurt soo I like to be on their side :) Me: So if there were a peak battle between the savages and orcs, you'd side with the orcs? Lt: I will go with the orcs. If you think about it they have more power with the orc bombers and the orc mages ect. Me: Ok.. If you were making this scenario, what changes if any, would you make? Lt: Well not as many monsters. I think there are too many of the savages and orcs and that making too much lag. Thank you Lord tamer for taking the time to share your opinions with me.
The second interview (Thantos) Me: Do you think that scenarios such as the current orc/savage happenings enhance your UO experience? Thantos: No. It's something fun and exciting to do with new items but it gets old after awhile. I mean.. with orcs attacking a city for months, there of plenty of people to fight them off. They should be dead by now. It's not very realistic. Me: What was your favorite item introduced during this scenario so far? Thantos: I'd have to say bola balls that allow you to make bolas.I have used them on guildmembers, terrible fun... They make it easier as a warrior for me to take on those pesky mages. Me: If you dont mind me asking, which side do you favor? The orcs or savages and why? Thantos: I perfer the savages. They have common ground with us and dont seem to like the orcs very much... Me: If you were making this scenario, what changes if any, would you make? Thantos: Well, first, the orc fort has been overrun by savages so the savages should mainly be inside. They should have parameters they dont leave to kep the fort intact. They should have more orcs trying to retake the fort... and all these items should spawn less.. I mean what good is it.. More realism would be nice. Thank you Thantos for taking the time to share your opinions with me.
The third interview (Talon Wardruid) Me: Do you think scenarios such as the current orc/savage happenings enhance your UO experience? Talon Wardruid (Tw): In some cases yes, in some no, take this as an example. It is nice and has a storyline (for those who read it) but the storyline does not fit the quest... Me: What was your favorite item introduced during this scenario so far? Tw: The Bola is the only realistic item made though in itself is incorrect as well, though it could be used to knock a man off a horse, the original Bolas were used to trip a man up to stop him from running If they were used correctly they would make PvP more realistic and fun for those with slower connections but instead they made them for dismounters which was a dissappointment to me. Me: If you dont mind me asking, which side do you favor? The orcs or savages and why? Tw: Neither to be honest, The Savages are a rampaging flood coming into our land killing both natives(Orcs) and humans as well, The Orcs on the other hand are maruaders and looters, Not much to like in either, though for now I hope the orcs get their homes back and get out of ours, thus the orcs are in my favor for now, The Savages are a strange breed and if peace could be reached I would be willing to see them take over the Orcs homes, but the Orcs have been here and now are fighting on two fronts, and have shown that they are not all dumb as we thought, the Bombers and Scouts are well trained, Perhaps the Orcs have more to show us but for now I think I will fight with the Orcs when I see fit and agaisnt both if possible. Me: If you were making this scenario, what changes if any, would you make? Tw: Ahh, well for one I would make the Quest fit the story they are giving us, I want to see a large size Orc and a Savage on a Beast or Savages with bows, and The Bombers throwing Bombs that chase you, get real, I want to see them throw what they carry, a G Explode pot. Other then that it is going well but they need to speed up the transactions faster, Move the plot, it is like a stagnat book, no point in following it. Thank you Talon Wardruid for taking the time to share your opinions with me. Well well... I found quite a wide range of perspectives. Everyone had interesting points to share. Thank you to everyone who participated in this.. Especially Raziel who gave his life at the orc fort for our picture :) |

BNN - Fighting Back |
The most recent article has appeared in BNN at the UO.com site. Jogug kicked a stone and watched as it skittered across the floor and hit the cave wall. He hated this place. No humies to bash, never enough food, and the cave reeked, even by orc standards. He mumbled some irate complaints to the other orcs in the room, although most of them were too busy with complaints of their own to listen. At this point you all have a choice. Which side will you choose? Do you help the Orcs and protect them from the Savages? Or do you take the opportunity and aid from the Savages to rid the lands of the Orcs? Let us know what you've decided on the thread below. |

A New Stratics Reporter |
Hail, and (somewhat) well met! Recently the fine organization known as Stratics began searching far and wide for the finest individuals in the realm to become reporters and authors of the lore of the land. Since they did not find those people, however, they did not want to go home empty handed, and recruited me. I am Garrett Granth, author, adventurer, and Guardian of Lore. Many of you have no doubt read some of my news in this fine place before, and I beg of you to forget that dreadful past and read my news anyway. I hope to be distributing any news you may have for me in the near future, and I will no doubt see you in person in the lands of Britannia. Look for a tallish man, about the same height as most, with a black robe and cape, carrying a black staff. That shall not be me, but I suggest you look for that man anyway. You shall know me by my brown feather cap and a bottomless bottle of ale. Thank ye all; Garrett Granth |

Ascension Quest: The Quest to Heal the Sword |
This excellent story was just sent to me by Aedilwulf of Clann Marrach Faol. If there was ever an explosion of quests on Napa Valley it's right now. Check out the Quests & Events forum to find out more....We boarded ship and sailed towards Britain. I was glad for the long voyage. I didn’t want to say goodbye to the good Brother. We fought more water elementals and a sea serpent during the voyage. I doubt if Soltan or I will soon forget Brother Caspius shouting "I will save you Soltan!" when the monsters attacked. Brother Caspius seemed more alive than anyone I had ever seen. He fought the creatures valiantly. He marveled at the dolphins. He stood at the bow of the ship, wind whipping his robe about, not wanting to miss a single thing. I pointed out Vesper as we sailed close to the city. Brother Caspius peered across the waters at the city. He said he had heard that Trolls lived under the bridges in that town. I smiled as once again I was struck by the thought that the goodly Brother was like a child in many ways... You can find the full story here. |

Pirates in Magincia |
As the Minister of Internal Security for the Magincian Senate, I make it a point to have eyes and ears everywhere. One of my loyalist citizens passed me this information on the condition of remaining anonymous. ----- In your travels around the land, I must give you an advanced warning, be wary of visiting the northern section of Magincia Island in Felucca. Thieves and Pirates have bought up most of the real estate there, and have established their own town, "Scoundrels' Cove", which hasn't been recognized by any government. Crazy Joe (http://lbsc.game-master.net ) owns the two-story house there, and calls it the Scoundrels' Cove Town Hall, where many thieves and pirates gather in the evenings. A few pirates sit on the edge of the waters as well, and don't dare come into town since they are branded murderers by the king! Magincia itself was a quiet city, but as of late factions have been fighting over ownership of the town. However, the presence of the thieves seems to go unnoticed, which is why I hope you get this advance warning. Visit them if you like, just don't provoke them, and keep a tight hand in your pockets |

Happenings on Ice Isle |
One of my Vistani spies intercepted this missive by Rune Artisem of the Order of the Ebon Skull to his superiors. Knowlege is power, nyet ? ----- I stood on the top of the Temple of Oblivion and looked over the onlookers. They had all come to see a grand event that would benefit Caina and the will of The Master. The onlookers were that of many, members of the Order (I would note, I assume he means the Order of the Ebon Skull. D.N.), Cultists of the Pendragon, vampires, and even the Mayor of Caina himself. A small bookstand stood before me and on it rested the Codex of Oblivion, the most important text within the history of Caina. I opened my voice and demanded their silence. For now was the time to begin the ritual and to restore a great power of Oblivion. As I began my chants and readings that made up the ritual, I noticed a fixation that appeared on all of the onlookers' faces. An almost zombie type look as their gaze was upon me. Halfway through the ritual, a spirit appeared that began chanting and wailing dark words that even I had not heard. It was beautiful. As we neared the end of the ritual, the one named Strider was sacrificed to make certain that Oblivion would be pleased. His scream was quick and joyful. It was at this very moment that the sky suddenly fell to the Darkness and lights could be seen emitting from the eastern side of Caina. The spirit that had been summoned vanished and appeared directly in front of the Temple. Myself and the group of onlookers hurried to follow this spirit as it slowly began its march to the east. There it stood, in all its greatness. Morn Cirith. An ancient power that had long be sealed away in the Abyss before the coming of The Master it was whispered that its power could even rival that of our Golgotha. We quickly went inside the structure and found many wondrous things. Ancient tomes, forgotten arcane experiments, creatures of untold power, the missing runebook library of Caina, and Death... For many of the fools who had came and witnessed the ritual did not ever leave Morn Cirith. For the curiosity killed the cat, so to speak... Then we came across a being of untold power. I had only heard rumors that he existed but he stood before me. The Unnamed One... Ezerak... For it was his punishment to serve the entity known as Morn Cirith forever... All are welcomed to come and explore the tower that is Morn Cirith. For it contains many things that are surely to interest the strong-minded... It certainly has many things to destroy the weak... In Eternal Darkness, Rune Artisem Arcane Master Minister of Race Relations to Caina Order of the Ebon Skull ----- A place of power, a rune library, and a necromancers playground. The City of Caina is not for the weak of heart, but still worth investigation. |

A Change of the Seasons |
Hail and well met fellow Britannians alas, but one last time... Due to the daily struggles of real life, the fact that the real world has been tugging quite hard on my tunic sleeve for quite some time, that is... *clears throat* Its with this last post that I make that I must tell all of ye that Im retiring for good from the realm of UO... Please hold thy cheers till Im finished... Ive tried to put this off for as long as possible, hell, Ive even tried to ignore this day coming, but *wham* here it is... Id like to thank all of ye with Stratics for putting up with bloke a like myself for so long, and for the opportunity to be a part of the team... Ive learned a alot in my stint with ye, especially from Xena, whom I continually "harrassed" with my emails and dry humored comments... Id like to thank my team of reporters and say good luck in the reporting efforts... The news is still out there, ye just have to keep looking for it... And, Id like to thank the players of Sonoma for the rapport and kindness ye have shown this ole reporter... My cap is off to ye for without ye, there'd be no Sonoma... Also, my sincerest apologies to those who's things I didnt quite get the chance to wrap up, finish or simply do... Now for a few confessions... *smirks* How many of ye remember Migon the Stranger...? Well, in case ye havent heard or figured out, he was a character played by McCoy and myself from his humble beginnings when he was suppose to be a temporary character who was suppose to slow down General Gaunt's armies by "borrowing" his second in command, Raistlia... McCoy would play Migon in game most of the time and I would write up what he posted on the boards... It was quite a bit of fun playing both sides of the coin, nothing new from any of the other players who would do the same, but Bones and I figured you should know since he too is retiring as well... It seems that the game would no longer be fun for him in my absence... *smirks at McCoy* Bones and I have a lot of good memories of the game and they will always be remembed... As for the people who didnt like us... And in Migon's flair: May you go to the Theological place of Eternal Damnation and fester. *smirks* Seriously though, thanks for hating Migon, because he didnt care... Now, as for our three accounts... We havent quite figured out what to do with them yet... We're not going to sell them... Thats just silly... So, with that... McCoy and I would like to say farewell and may the Great I Am smile upon thee one last time in this forum... Safe Journeys to all, and to all a safe plight... Respectfully, PS: I dont think Ive left anything out... Oh, yeah... For those of you who were tracking the old Sonoma Notepads when it was still up, may it rest in peace, we were also the Paparazi Press... |

Calandryll Comments on Savage Paints |
Some of you may already know this, but here are some of Calandryll's comments (when responding to a post on UO Discussion) on the newly introduced savage paints :2. Savages *WILL* attack the pets of a paint wearer, this includes horses, nightmare, dragons, whatever *BUG* ***After I posted the above, Calandryll made a more comprehensive summary on UO Discussions*** Since there have been quite a few posts about the savage paint and the orc masks, I figured it would be a good idea to post some more information about them to explain why they are doing some of the things they do. ***Further Additions*** Rather then start a seperate news post, I thought it may be better to add some further updates to the comments on the Savage War Paints and Orc Masks here. Many thanks to Calandryll for alerting Stratics (and also on the official UO Boards) to the following. Can't make them (ie war paints) stackable because of the fact that they use existing art. If we made them stackable, stacking them would turn them into apples (berry) and honey pots (savage paint). and Healing problems with paint and masks. Further on the official UO Boards, in response to well i am have my masks of orc kin exploding on me when i am not flagged as an aggressor. in fact it usually happens after i have been fighting with it on for 15 to 20 minutes. then i attack a savage and i get dismounted, when i check my paperdoll i see my mask is gone. i am also have lots of difficulty healing when fighting savages and i am not wearing paint but am wearing a mask of orcish kin Calandryll replied If you got dismounted, more than likely an orc targetting your horse. The system sees the horse as being your responsibility and hence, the mask explodes when the orc attacks it. |

Ug Hummies! Empress Makayla of Trinsic sent us the following reply to the accusations of treason: I, Empress Makayla of Trinsic would like to clarify some things that have happened in our great land of Sosaria of late. This, of course, begs the question: "When, if ever, will Lord British return?" In this orc's opinion, better to have rulers in the cities then let the land fall into anarchy. Well, at least until we get rid of these nasty tribesmen. Praise Minax! |

Distributed Backups on Chesapeake |
This was posted on the FYI Section of the official UO Site :The distributed backup system was activated on the Chesapeake shard on Monday, July 2nd following an unscheduled downtime. The system has been actively running on the AOL Legends, Atlantic, Lake Superior, Great Lakes and Hokuto shards, and has reduced backup times considerably. We estimate that this change on Chesapeake will bring the shard backup time down to between 5-15 minutes. As a result, the amount of time required for shard maintenance, restarts, or ‘time warps’ will be narrowed to between 5-15 minutes in most cases. |

Grief Tactics in Trammel |
Many players know this. But for the benefit of the newer players of UO, Bodak (UO eSupport Administrator) posted this on UO Discussions :Luring monsters to other players on the Trammel facet (or in Ilshenar) in order to kill and/or loot them can be considered a grief tactic and an exploit of game mechanics. While on Trammel, if you cannot attack and kill another player by any “normal” means of aggression, and you find a way around the mechanics of Trammel to harm or kill other players, you are exploiting the game. Normal means of aggression are: |

I'm leaving Maxis and The Sims to lead the design for the next evolutionary incarnations of UO (aka the-project-that-is-not-UO2 :) ).Details as to exactly what "the next evolutionary incarnations of UO" means are still up in the air, but as we find out more we'll make sure to let you know. |

Orcs, Dwarves and Werewolves...Oh My! |
Greetings, pilgrims. A few weeks ago, I heard strange rumors of new and unusual "races" of folk, in the Land of Legends. No, I'm not talking about the orcs or savages. I'm speaking of citizens, who walk the very streets of Britannia and who claim to be other than human. So I set about in search of these folk. In the ensuing days, I did indeed come across "citizens" who claimed to be of the "old races." Among the races of characters, I discovered the High Elves of Yew, the Gnomes who ply their trades while in the employment of Thunderlips, and even a small but growing number of Undead. Alas, I was fortunate enough to meet several citizens who claimed non-human heritage. I even heard rumors of that oldest of races, the Dwarves, yet was unable to locate any of their reclusive number. In a chance meeting with some longtime associates, I remarked that I had thus been unable to verify the existence of any Dwarven clans in the Land of Lands. A few days later, I received this missive from Cyco Lee who informed me that he has indeed met members of a new Dwarven scept. I thanked Cyco for this information, and in the interest of academia, I requested that he notify me, should he encounter any other non-human races. This is Cyco's latest letter. Read on. Hail Lord Cyn.I thank thee for the report, Cyco. This issue is still being investigated and explored. Stay tuned for further developments. |

Return of the Black One |
Late last eve I decided to go for a walk. As I wandered I began to hear rumors on the lips of the people I passed that the Black One had in fact returned. This puzzled me; I had thought it to be only a rumor, possibly just a joke - and not a funny one at that. But with this information in my mind I crossed over to the dead lands of Felucca. I had decided I would visit my friend Noleeens, the owner of the recently relocated Sandlewood Box Inn located in Caelum Mortuus, figuring that either she or a patron of her's might have some information about this development. As I arrived I noted several members of the Cult of the Black Dragon sitting in the Inn. I recognized their leader Kandalor, one of the "knights" El Gringo and the "dark paladin" William. Seeing Noleeens, I greeted her and we spoke briefly of the night's events. It was then Kandalor's turn to talk. He began by explaining the importance of the Black One's return, and that the Urks and the Cult had joined together to welcome home their "god". He explained that a peace had been declared between the Bloodrock Clan and the Cult, ending a long time war between the two groups. This peace only came as a direct response to the wishes of the Black One. Kandalor went on to explain that there were two new Chaos Knights named to the fold, Boromir and Eli Drachen. Who would serve as direct warriors against the Virtues and the followers of the Gold One. It was also explained that the Urks were to select two amoungst them who would serve as Chaos Knights, they would be confirmed into the order on the next visit from the Dark One. The Dark One also reportedly gave the Cult a new Hymn. Some passages and prophecies that were intended to amend the Hymn of Discord and to clarify the order and rules of the Cult. Although not everything was clear to the entire Cult, Kandalor was certain it would be made so very soon. It was related to me that with that closed the visit from the Black One. The Cult of the Black Dragon and the Bloodrock Clan orcs returned to their villages to discuss the futures of both groups and the new found peace between them. As Kandalor finished the story, and the bottle he was drinking, he excused himself for a "rest". I stayed for a bit at the Inn, watching the visitors come and go. Making note of those who passed the doors and came in for a drink before retiring home for bed. The mood seemed to be that of somewhat "joy" in this dark foreboding town. That "joy" could only mean heartbreak and doom for the rest of the land though. |

The Scenerio Publish and Chessie Issues |
Calandryll posted the following news in a couple different areas of the UO Community: Because of the recent publish and the holiday (July 4, Wednesday) we will be publishing the next scenario publish today, active tomorrow morning on all shards except for Chessie. Chessie will get the publish sometime later this week. My apologies to those on Chessie for the delay, but given publish 12 and the holiday, we feel this is the best course.Bottom line - Start looking for something new either today (Oceania) or first thing tomorrow. And this also serves as confirmation that Chesey either has already or will very soon be receiving Publish 12. |

Stratics Centre Grand Opening tonight, July 2, 8 pm CST |
Tonight, July 2, at 8 pm CST, the GL Stratics Centre will celebrate its grand opening. The festivities begin at with The Swamp Swap, a swap meet where people can buy/sell/trade goods and services. Tailoring and smithing equipment is available at the Centre for those who wish to fill orders on the spot. If you are the proprietor of a shop, tavern or rune library, bring us a rune to add to the collection in our mini-rune library at the centre. The Scavenger Hunt will kick off around 8:30. Barth has created a list of 50 reasonably common items for participants to find. Teams are welcome, and encouraged. Winners will split the 25k prize money among their team. The teams have one hour to find as many items on the list as they can and report back to the centre. The first team to either find all the items or find the most times wins. Art in a Box begins at 9:30. Each contestant is given a small wooden chest containing a number of items. (All boxes have the same contents.) Three additional items of the contestants selection may be added. (Three total, not three other item types in multiple numbers.) Artists have 30 minutes to create a dynorama of sorts in their box. Winners will be chosen based on creativity and presentation by a panel of three judges. Prizes include MIB’s and gold. Finally, at 10, there will be a Storytelling Competition. Original work, any style (including poetry or songs), 3 minutes or less. The winner will take home a check for 10k, 5k for second and 2.5k for third. The winning stories will also be featured in the GL Stratics news section. The GL Stratics Centre is located on the swamp’s edge north of Trinsic, Trammel, and may be found at these coordinates: 65'S 48'E. The sandstone was generously donated by Brooks and the Good Guys (GG) guild and furnished with help from GG and the townsfolk of River’s End. The ground floor collection was donated in memory of Tristam and features items from his personal collection as well as other gifts to the centre. The mini-rune library, still under construction, was contributed by Richard Cypher. This will be the beginning of a series of events hosted by the GL Stratics team and even before it’s begun, the new ones are already on the drawing board. We’re excited about tonight’s event and look forward to meeting you there. |

A New Face for the Atlantic Reporting Team |
Zdrastvitseh! I would just like to introduce myself to the good people of Atlantic. It is my honor to serve you as a member of this august body, and I look forward to seeing you as I travel the land in search of news and the truth. As one of my first priorities, I hope to visit the taverns and establishments of the land, enjoy the cuisine and perhaps taste a few house wines. *smiles* Remember, atmosphere is as important as the meal. An excellent meal served in the midst of balvan is no better than serving rat stew on a silver plate. Good travels, and may your road always be free. |

White skinned Savages, Strange masks and the meaning of Mine..... |
Taken from the Stratics Europa Forum From the cover of the shadows surrounding the wooden hut Calador watched the strange beings constructing their camp. Seeing how they moved with purpose and how everything had a place he knew that these creatures were a force to be reckoned with. Ever since recieving the pigeon from Anita, a fellow Mage of GYE, he had hidden close to this new village, watching and learning, trying to fathom out what this race of creatures wanted, needed and why were they here now? Some he noticed wore strange masks, these he had decided where the leaders of the communities as they seemed to be giving out orders about the guards around the village and where each new building should be placed. This was a precise operation, nothing was left to risk and this made Calador worried. Any move against these beings before their purpose could be ascertained could be disasterous and the implications of a war against these beings foreign to Brittania could lead to troubled times what with the Orcs already attacking cities. Calador prayed to Laraya that no-one would be stupid enough to attack these individuals without first trying to parley with them. A blood curdling scream rent the night air and as one the creatures all rushed to the north, carrying finely made spears and moving in silence. Stalking forward, Calador followed them from cover, hoping his invisibility spell would not fade and leave him in the bright moonlight for all to see. Ahead he heard the sound of fighting and saw a group of black cloaked figures chanting words of power and unleashing spell after spell into the group of whiteskins that were attacking them. Standing at the back of the group the masked whiteskins urged their warriors on to defeat these invaders. Looking around Calador saw what had caused the scream, a whiteskin some 20 yards away had been blown apart by spellfire. Cursing to himself Calador realised that this was the start of a new crusade, just because something was new it meant it had to be attacked in some peoples minds, there was no room for the unknown to leave peacefully alongside the other citizens and beings of Brittania, it had to be exterminated before it became too powerfull and caused a threat, No matter that it might be peaceful, extermination was the deciding factor. The whiteskins were losing, wishing he could help but knowing on this facet he was powerless to intervene, Calador moved away when he heard the scream of the last whiteskin dying, a solitary tear of remorse flowing down his cheek. A new sound split the night air, a human voice, simply shouting "MINE". Looking back because he was curious, Calador saw the group in question arguing and trying to grab the strange masks from each others grasps. It seemed that this was not a war party come to exterminate but a number of groups of people who wanted the masks but why? Then the penny dropped, the masks of these new beings would fetch a good price in gold at the market by Britain Main Bank. To some who knew not of the whiteskins, they could be touted as a 'rare' item and much money could be made in this was. It would seem the groups of hunters were arguing over the masks, greed overcoming common sense and verbal taunts and insults being thrown at each other as if they could make reasoning easier. Turning away in disgust from this scene Calador moved cautiously back to the huts. A solitary whiteskin in a golden mask stepped from the nearest hut and smiled, his golden mask showing a distorted grin, moving towards Calador he dropped a small chest at his feet and then quite clearly deliberately winked. The beings voice whispered in a strange dialect, "You no attack, you have gifts, no fight between us, now take and begone." With that the whiteskin vanished into the darkness. Picking up the box, Calador looked around and realised his spell was still intact, how had this being sensed him? Thinking no further although pondering over the use of the word 'Mine', he uttered the words of power that would take him back to the Vale and vanished from sight. Not until he was safely back in the Town Hall did Calador carefully open the box, inside were 19 different masks, all shimmering in the candlelight, their colours refracting and making them a joy to behold. Realising this was a priceless gift, Calador decided that against that village no offensive action would be taken by GYE for this was a gift of peace, a present given to ensure at least some understanding of these new beings. At least one Guild would not attack this new settlement, Calador just hoped it would be likewise for the Allies and other Guilds that kept in touch with GYE. Deep down inside he knew however that it would not be enough and this made him sigh sadly............ [dedicated to a friend who showed me this weekend that not everything you see is what is actually is, thankyou *bows*] As usual Dain gave us a great tale and something to ponder over. I hope many will see the light as did Calador. |
