Here are the immediate items discovered in today’s publish and have been updated. Simply log out and patch your client for the following fixes:

  • Players experiencing lag with housing
  • Tokuno ship dropping cannons (will be fixed during daily maintenance)
  • Dismounting a horse creates an additional horse

In other news:

I know players are having problems logging in to the UOGamecodes site. The trouble is one of traffic, but we are also having our network operations looking at our side for login server issues for player accounts. They have rebooted the server controlling logins, and will continue to monitor the service as the traffic continues.

Also, stay tuned for:

  • High Seas Fiction – we have some amazing player fiction to share with you in two parts. Part I will immediately follow this post.
  • Updates to the Live Arc – If you participated in the Invasion at Yew Prison this weekend share what you may have learned with other players.
  • Magincia is about to have a subtle makeover …

Return to Britannia ends tomorrow morning.  Anniversary items are done, tested, and will be released in the next few days.

High Seas Helpful Hint:

You may not dry-dock your ship with a pirate binding pole (from one of the bounty quests) on the deck. If you need to dry-dock your boat quit the quest and the binding pole will disappear.

GDC Interviews:

While at GDC last week, I was privileged to meet some fantastic folks from MMORPG.com, Massively, Gamasutra, Zam, Gamebreaker TV, Curse.com, and our friends at Stratics.

See you on the boards.

Ultima Online Receives Inaugural Hall of Fame Award - GDC Online 2010-10-07 18:02:09 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1101 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1101 At the time you read this Ultima Online will have received the inaugural Hall of Fame Award at the Game Developer’s Conference at the birth place of Ultima Online: Austin, Texas.

It’s been an amazing, humbling, inspiring, and fulfilling week.

I am thankful to be part of an amazing team, but more importantly I’m humbled by the experience and force that helped shape an industry … before there WAS an industry.

This Hall of Fame Award is not just about the developers. It’s not just about the fans or community. It’s not just even about the duration of time that this game has lasted.

It’s about the story of all those things combined. It’s those moments at 2 a.m. when you can’t believe you’re still playing. It’s about vengeance for a PK. It’s that immediate connection, or the widening eyes from every interviewer I’ve met who just wants to share an experience … before the launch of the first shard.

Ultima Online is all about storytelling. Every player past and present, or each developer current or past has contributed to the story. Every person who has written code, fiction, or lead an event, sabotaged another guild, or made an appointment to meet your later-to-be spouse for the first time, are all parts of what make this world legendary.

On behalf of the creators at Orgin, the current devs and developers past , every QA, community manager and CSR to every EM, seer, fansite, modder and moderator or person who has poured their time and creativity into this experience …

Thank you.

Producer's Update 10/01/10 - New High Seas Test Publish & More 2010-10-01 17:48:50 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1099 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1099 From the desktop:

High Seas Test Server Published:

I will apologize now for using the term “beta” in regard to the booster pack we are releasing. The better term would have been “Open Test.” The server is called “High Seas test.” During the time of test we’ve released updates during maintenance cycles, and at the time you are reading this we have a planned publish that addresses:

  • Boat movement and graphics glitches
  • Ship access and ship hold sizes
  • Fishing Quests
  • Ship parking
  • Ship combat balance and other features

You can read about the update and also see the publish notes [here]

A few of you understand this is an elongated cycle on a Test Center before going live October 12th for Publish 68.  We will continue to take player feedback and update you on the High Seas forums.

Also, a sample of the High Seas key art can be seen [here].

Producer's Update 09/23/10 - High Seas Open Beta Begins! 2010-09-23 17:43:24 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1092 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1092 At last, Beta for High Seas is now entering Open Beta - Rogues, sailors, merchants, and all adventurers who have been waiting for days of smoothly sailing Sosarian seas or brandishing scimitars against bandits or pirates will now have their appetites sated!

You can experience High Seas on Test Center 9 starting 24 September, 2010. The interim play guide for High Seas can be found here (updated 9/24), and will walk you through the High Seas experience. Starting tomorrow, please provide your feedback here.

You can get a head start by downloading the clients here:

Classic Client
Enhanced Client

With the start of Beta we present an interesting challenge - scallywags need not apply! Your first task is to focus on the boss encounter against Scalis’ might.  If you’re still up for more death and mayhem visit the island of Corgul the Soulbinder.

Internal testing shows that Scalis may be too powerful; however, I am of the mind that the extremely capable warriors of Britannia should make short work of him …

As we continue  internal testing and development, and provide updates on the external test center, we’ll want your input on ship-to-ship combat, fishing, and quests at the sea markets as well.

When Ultima Online™: High Seas releases this fall all players will benefit from:

  • Enhanced boat movement system and ship mouse control

For $14.99 USD you can also enjoy:

  • Brand new NPC Ship Combat with enhanced ship-to-ship combat and damage states
  • Bank/Character Storage Increase, Sea Markets, new fish, fishing buffs, and recipes, paintable boats, Level 7 Treasure Chests and new boss encounters: the Scalis and Corgul the Soulbinder
  • All new ship combat! Features include new ship to ship combat,  ship weapons and ammunition, and NPC Ship Combat (Pirates and Merchants)
  • Three new ship types with customizable colors, weapons and ammunition

And finally, stay tuned as we get closer to our Hall of Fame Award this Fall at GDC Online in Austin, Texas.

More exciting news to come for Ultima Online!

Producer's Update - 9/10/2010 2010-09-10 16:03:14 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1087 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1087 This week I’d like to follow up on some questions asked during the Town Hall as well as continue to clarify what a booster pack means, and what you are paying for and what you are NOT paying for.

What is the plan for the next Booster? When will we see it?

Booster packs are geared for semi-rapid dev cycles plus testing. The goal is to release two per year.  We have several ideas right now. But in the short term we are going to focus on completing the current design, delivering arenas to test center as soon as we can, and fixing bugs in game.

The booster went into Alpha testing Wednesday (September 8th) and we have an aggressive bug schedule we are digging into, to get players hands on it and to an external test center in the not too distant future.

Most importantly, the cost of the booster pack does not include “the cost of labor.” This means that we fix bugs and core systems that EVERYONE will have access to. What you pay for is the content surrounding those updates. For example, with the current booster in production everyone will receive the benefit of smooth boat movement. It is core functionality we cannot actively separate from the game. What the customer pays for are new ships, new quests, and access to “cool stuff” like new recipes and boss battles.

As for all content, the booster is available for both clients. Smooth boat movement was initially developed and tested in the Classic Client, and later developed and tested in the Enhanced Client.

Players do not pay for the Ultima Online clients. You pay for the content.

Producer's Update - 8/13/10 2010-08-13 16:51:19 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1082 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1082 Just is a simple word. It can mean forthright, and properly executed within the bounds of law. It may also be used as an adverb. For example: “I just love cake” or “Why doesn’t the dev team just ?”

The word “just” tends to get some in a lot of trouble. Another example “I was just adjusting my radio, officer.” Or something I am certain many have heard “Oh he or she is just a friend.”

Patrolling the boards as we do, the dev team tends to see the word “just” a lot in terms of things we have done or have yet to do. “If they would just …”

Well, we have just finished Pub 67. We have just been through testing on the latest internal review of arenas, and we have just finished taking a look all of the fans who will attend the summer Town Hall at the end of this month.

And I am just excited.

What does this all mean for you?

It means we are just as focused on the future of UO as we ever have been.

The media outreach prior to this letter went to quite a number of people -- some who have played Ultima Online before, or know of the Ultima series … some whoare only RPGers. The intent? To open the channel and experience of the longest running MMO to countless who have only heard of the game in passing.

Producer's Update - June 2010 2010-06-24 18:22:34 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1062 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1062 The developer/player relationship is an interesting one.  There is a delicate balance between the developer as player, developer as psychologist, and developer as creator/annihilator.  We have to balance each one of them in order to maximize what each of you think is acceptable.

As players of our own game, we have a passion and interest for the legacy of Ultima Online, and how we interpret that and convey it through story, or prioritizing what systems and bugs to fix.  We then think about what the player wants.  Next, as creators and annihilators, we remove and add as necessary.  Not unlike chefs, sometimes the mix of ingredients is acceptable, sometimes bitter and unpleasant.  However, if we want you to return we’ll keep improving our skills.

This summer we’ve chosen to take the story arc a different direction. So often it’s been easy to show you good, and say “Hey, this is good, we are all good-natured at heart, this is obviously what life is about … “

May 2010 - Producer's Letter 2010-05-21 17:16:15 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1047 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1047

I’m often at a loss on how to begin updates …

So how about we make what we called in the Air Force a “sandwich…” I won’t say what KIND of sandwich we called it … but we press basically good information between the not so good stuff.

Publish 66 is out the door, and by the time you read this, we should have a few changes that will address the issues with pitchers, bards not being interrupted by Pally’s, the Bard book in the paperdoll, and a few other things you’ve helped us find. We appreciate players actually getting on test center and taking a look before we go to Origin. (Yes not Origins!) J

Also, we hope you are enjoying the attention to the Enhanced Client, as well as delivering on the Memorial Engraving Tool. We thought getting this out before Memorial Day in the U.S. would be appropriate.

We got a lot of work done this publish, however we didn’t have all the time we needed to get out all we planned … so we are planning an additional mini-66 before July.  Most of it will be a large client update. Derek and Grimm should have an idea on the size of the change in the next couple weeks.

The patch will have some additional art updates, as well as some juicy additions to the Live story arc we could not fit into this publish. Given that, this is a great time to discuss the fiction gaps and our intent.

This is a prelude to topics that I’d like to cover in a more expansive letter this week:

  • Current Status of Pub 66
  • Event story arc and loopholes in the fiction – Giving EMs a chance to catch up before major Live Event
  • Status of the 3rd party program detection – We are ready to implement and will let you know our plan of action for repeat offenders

Also, right now we are doing our best to get Pub 66 to Test Center .. hope to get you an update in the next 36 hours.

After Pub 66 initial  we will have a follow up publish several weeks after as we couldn’t fit all of pub 66 in one palpable serving.

We have been working hard on making some major updates to the Factions system, and we are now commencing public testing of these changes. They represent some significant changes to the Factions system. As such, we feel it is important to do extensive public testing and gather as much feedback as we can.

Later this afternoon we will open a Test Server named “Factions”. You are invited to jump in and playtest this early version of Factions system changes, which include new fortresses, an updated score and ranking system, and in-game leaderboards.

Details of the test have been posted on the Stratics forums here: http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=194079. The Factions test server is scheduled to open at 3:00 PM ETD on 14 April 2010.

In the Shadow of Virtue - Lost and Found Part 2 2010-04-13 16:21:05 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1036 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1036 This is a continuation of Lost and Found Part 1

Update - 4/14: The development team wanted to offer some background into the creative process for making the next chapter in UO Lore, enjoy!

In February of this year we had a Saturday meeting. From this meeting we discussed all of the plans surrounding the re-building of Magincia … what we wanted to do with growing the community … but first and foremost we wanted something simple, elegant, and that would inspire roleplay.

We’ve looked at all the stories from Greek Mythology, Norse, Grimm Fairy Tales, and the Bible. There are some basic themes. There is good … there is Evil and all things in-between.

Before the thread occurred about “Good and Bad in UO” we had already devised the path for the rest of the year. There is a quote we learn at the Air Force Academy …”A man has integrity if his interest in the good of the Service is at all times greater than [himself], and when he holds himself to the same line of duty when unobserved as he would follow if his superiors were present ..” (Yes I know that by heart it was drilled into me …)

The paraphrased version is …”How good are you when no one is around?”

Even more … if you have the opportunity to be bad … how bad would you be?

It’s very easy to be a good person when good is winning …  Yes, we are planning on rebuilding Magincia. But to make an omelet …

And with that Gentlewomen … and Good sirs of Britannia … We offer you:

In the Shadow of Virtue - Lost and Found Part 2

Captain Avery stood before Queen Dawn at attention, even though with Lord Francesco dead he wasn’t technically a member of any militia.   Old habits from old identities die hard, thought Sherry.

A few moments earlier, Captain Avery had entered the chamber and found Queen Dawn and Dexter the Mage in an animated debate.  He didn’t seem to notice Sherry the mouse, with whom they had also been speaking, because she was under the edge of the sofa by one of the legs.  All three of them had stood as he entered the room; their shame in his presence was palpable.

“Oh, I’m sorry to interrupt, your highness.  I will come back later.”

“Please come in.  We are discussing something that concerns you.” said Dawn, almost apologetically.

“Yes, your highness.” And thus he had sprung to attention.

“At ease, Captain.” Dawn’s usual verve was returning and she smirked.  “This isn’t an inspection.”  She extended her hand to him to welcome him.  Avery stepped forward, took her hand and bowed until his forehead touched the back of it.  Well, at least he managed not to salute her again, Sherry thought.

The queen blushed at his gallant, if awkward, gesture.  “I trust that your accommodations here at the castle have been acceptable?” she fumbled.

“Yes your highness, it is far above what I am accustomed to.”  Avery said with a pleasant smile.  He quickly added, “I meant to refer to when I was living in the barracks of Lord Francesco, of course.”

Wow, thought Sherry, Now I bet Dawn and Dexter wish they were hiding under the sofa….  Avery is truly a remarkable man to resist bitterness after so much hardship, Sherry thought to herself.

Good Outposts Make Good Neighbors 2010-04-02 12:34:23 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1030 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1030 As Dawn was about to step into the receiving chamber, she paused in front of the mirror near the door and tucked a ringlet of her brown hair back into place.  It defiantly popped free again.  Dawn clenched her lips and shook her head slowly.

How did I ever end up playing the part of queen? she thought to herself as she examined her appearance in the mirror.  I am a warrior, a third-generation royal guard.  I have fought orcs and ophidians and demons and giant, mutant plants and all sorts of monsters… and now it seems I must face tea parties with potentates and dignitaries.  I am unsure which is more likely to kill me.

Lost & Found - Part 1 2010-02-26 15:59:49 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1021 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1021 Sherry’s whiskers shivered with anticipation as she crept between the aging stones of the castle. She’d suspected for quite some time that something lay behind the oddly foreshortened wall of the throne room, but it wasn’t until recently that she’d been able to find a place where the stones at the base were weakened enough to force a way through. Clearing away the crumbled stone had taken several tail-wrenching trips until a few of the castle servants began offering helpful hands. The end result was a new mouse hole and a dust coated Sherry but no amount of debris in her fur could detract from the thrill of discovery: soon she would be where no mouse had been before!

The air was close; chokingly full of dust and heavy with time. As she pulled herself through the tight confines of the hole and into the chamber beyond Sherry blinked in surprise. The area was faintly illuminated! Nervously casting about for the source of the glow, Sherry fastened her gaze upon a small bundle of what appeared to be silk. The source of the illumination was coming from within. Gingerly Sherry extended a claw to prod at the dusty fabric only to recoil with a startled squeak as the aging cloth parted and tore, disintegrating to reveal a strange translucent shape.

Tail in claw, Sherry edged closer to investigate…

Producer's Letter - Where are we and what the heck are we doing? 2010-02-12 20:45:02 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1018 http://www.uoherald.com/news/news.php?newsid=1018

Where are we? Busy.

By the time you read this, our Valentine’s Day publish should be out the door. Just so you know, a handful of our intrepid developers braved the snowy wilds of Northern Virginia to get everything staged and delivered. Now if that isn’t love, I don’t know what is.  This publish was the first step toward a six- month dev cycle for updates to the live game and updating some Stygian Abyss (SA) content.

We’ve made some core updates to Mysticism that from early reviews seem to be on the right track … For our publish in March we’re taking another look at the entire Mysticism spell line and amping it up a bit. Yes, I know … we didn’t just add an expansion and then move on, we really meant what we said about continuing to support what we’ve put out into the community.  Also, we’ve got some artifacts for humans that were never released for SA content. We have to get those out too.

And given that … what about Magincia? It’s just … there like the Statue of Liberty at the end of Ghostbusters II. (Esoteric reference +5 points) I will tell you there are four major topics that the team is discussing at present:

What follows is in no way a schedule or in any way meant to imply that these things will happen in the near term, but instead to give you a peek where my head is and what the team is iterating on …
