In this week's Five on Friday we have questions about Pigments of Tokuno, Black Rock, and Throwing.
Will a weapon that has been dyed with a Pigments of Tokuno or has been written on with a Weapon engraving tool be able to be imbued or unraveled?
I don’t see why not! We may need to add a warning for those two cases when attempting to mass-unravel a bag of items, however. We wouldn’t want you accidentally destroying a precious gift you’ve received from someone you care about. -Draconi

I'm curious why tokono is dropping blackrock?
Blackrock is an extraordinary reagent – an unparalleled amplifier of magical energy that has been used even in attempts to cast Armageddon by mere mortals. Indeed, players who invoke the spell words for Armageddon while holding blackrock often find themselves caught up in an explosion of power… for good or ill. Even the forces of darkness are not immune from its effect, and it has been known to penetrate magical barriers where other methods have all but failed. -Draconi

Throwing is listed as a Garg only ability, and Gargs won't be able to use Archery. That seems lame any possibility that will change? Or perhaps throwing weapons have UBWS?
Just as archery is restricted to elves and humans, throwing is only planned for gargoyle players. Don’t expect to see any thrown weapons with the Use Best Weapon Skill property; thrown weapons will have the same Use Best Weapon Skill restrictions as bows and crossbows. -Misk

It's been mentioned that Gargoyles will be able to fly as fast as a mounted person running....will they be able to dismount a person on mount...and still fly at mounted speed? If so, that will lead to a HUGE disadvantage to any non gargoyle race. How's this going to work out? can you shed some light please.
Gargoyle players will have access to nearly all dismounting abilities and weapon styles that are presently in game. They will also experience the same limitations that the other races have. A gargoyle that attempts to dismount another player must land first and will require the same delay before being able to take flight again. In return, gargoyles may be knocked out of flight just as humans and elves may be dismounted. -Misk

Why is it that formerly high-level creatures, like reapers and gargoyles are no longer a challenge to a high-level mage, when before they were considerably challeinging?
Since UO was launched, the overall power of the average player has increased compared to the original monsters. We've talked about rebalancing all monsters to match the current state of UO, but one downside to that would be that it would change many player's favorite hunting spots. That could be perceived as a nerf, so it is something we would have to think about beforehand. Do you think that the older monsters and creatures should be buffed up to make them more challenging? We'd like to hear why or why not. -Wilki

Mythic and Bioware Form New RPG/MMO Group

Today we have important news to share with the community. EA is restructuring its RPG and MMO games development into a new group that includes both Mythic and BioWare. This newly formed team will be led by Ray Muzyka, co-founder and General Manager of BioWare. With this change, Ray becomes Group General Manager of the new RPG/MMO studio group. BioWare’s other co-founder, Greg Zeschuk will become Group Creative Officer for the new RPG/MMO studio group. Rob Denton will step up as General Manager of Mythic and report to Ray. BioWare’s studios remain unchanged and continue to report to Ray.
Mark Jacobs, current General Manager of Mythic will leave EA on June 23, 2009. We thank Mark for his contributions at Mythic and wish him the very best going forward. Mark played a major part in the success of Mythic with his contribution as General Manager and Lead Designer of WAR.
Mythic retains a strong team led by Rob who co-founded Mythic in 1995. Rob played a critical role in the development of Dark Age of Camelot. In his previous role as COO, he was responsible for all day-to-day management of the studio including all development, operations and support.

In this week's Five on Friday we cover...
Why is it that pets are unable to navigate around a 1-tile obstacle unless their owner moves to a point where the pet could pathfind around the obstacle? In some extreme cases I have had to come back right to where the pet is and have it follow me on a 90 degree detour before it will move off the obstalce it's stuck on.
Ergh. The pet pathfinding code is really weak – it’s a single check for direct Line of Sight. It’s definitely something we want to look into since we use more advanced pathfinding with other mobs. --Draconi

Under the new SA client will the gargoyle charactor (when flying) be able to cross mountain ranges or (if not) go further up the slope so to speak? and will they be able to cross open water without a boat? like other flying creatures such as birds and mongbats.
There will be *some* areas where they can do so, but it won’t be a carte blanche ability to cross terrain like you’ve described. For instance, the Shrine of Singularity in Ter Mur can only be accessed by flying over a mountain path. We’re definitely interested in pushing the envelope without causing any gamebreaking behavior, though. -Draconi

Why are opposing factions able to heal and res each other? Thought these were sposed to be mortal enemies....

Why cant you exorcise ghosts in despise? This is the most done spawn yet people are allowed to ghost cam this without getting kicked.....
This will be fixed in Publish 59, along with changes to help relieve the Ghost Cam problem. -Draconi

Will for SA been worked on a global chat system with a easy way to contact all players on the shard?
The global chat system will only work with players also using the SA client. For now we’ve disabled the feature and focused on fixing things that will prevent players from adopting the new client. Once we get a majority of our players using the new client, we can work out the bugs with the global chat system and re-enable it. -Supreem

Yes, if the jewelry has magical properties. Can Jewelry be imbued? Yes. Do you have to have the crafting skills to be able to imbue an item? No, but crafting skills are useful for creating base items to Imbue.

What is the actual damage increase in combat when you have 100 lumberjacking skill?
Is it still 30-35% damage incerase like it was in renaissance or was it reduced to the same damage increase as inscription; 10-15%? Lumberjack provides a damage bonus of +10% at GM.

Does the chance of a Rares/Deco/Replica drop at the Valor/Spirituality/Humility/Tokono Champ Spawn increase based on how much of the spawn you kill & if so,does it only apply to one spawn session or does your chance reset each time you log out or start a different champ spawn? Is killing the early spawns cumulative until I get an artie?
The person who worked most of the spawn (earned the most points based on number and difficulty of the creatures killed) has the highest chance of receiving a replica. If that person doesn’t win it, then all the people who earned enough points to qualify for the replica have an equal chance at it, including the person who worked it the most. The points reset each time you start a different champ spawn. Logging out doesn’t reset your points. Only defeating the boss does. Points are altar specific so earning points at Altar A doesn’t count towards earning a replica at Altar B.

Given the uselessness of certain powerscrolls would it be a good idea to rebalance each skills abilities to better fit across the board?
Rebalancing skills is a long term goal not exclusively linked to powerscrolls. But for the short term, we have been exploring ways of making low level powerscrolls and stats scrolls more desirable. We’ll be able to provide you with more info once we’ve ironed out the last details.

Can you tell me all about the special move Feint, what it does, what affects it, how long it lasts etc?
The Feint special maneuver reduces the attacker’s damage by a percentage. The percentage can be 20% to 50% and scales based on the defender’s weapon skill. The Feint duration is 6 seconds.

FoF: Beta Launch Chrissay Zeeman June 05, 2009 In this week's Five on Friday we cover Gargolye flying abilities, Doom Gauntlet, and skill points on Jewelry. I've noticed that melee skill points on jewels and items dont count towards combat abilities, such as special moves, hit chance increase, etc. i was wondering if that was designed to be that way or if it is a bug. spell casting skill points of items count towards those abilities. example of what im mean if i have 60 base tactics and use an item with 10 tactics to get to 70 tactics i still cant use the special moves for the weapon and get a que saying i require 70 tactics to use that move. Melee skill points on jewelry and items not counting towards special move skill requirements is as designed.
-Leurocian -- Since the gargoyle flying ability is being made so similar to being mounted, can we assume they will only have 4 taming slots? Or will they be able to fly with a greater dragon? Possibly requiring a control slot for gargoyles while they are flying is something that the team is still currently evaluating.
-Leurocian -- Since the doom gauntlet now uses a point system to determine artifacts, do the points get whipped out after leaving doom or do they build up, letting you get a higher chance each trip until you receive the artifact? The points build up until you receive an artifact. -Leurocian -- Will another char slot be included with SA? There are no current plans to include another character slot for SA. -Leurocian
Is there any progress with regards to making (for example) Black Staffs/Cleavers/Hatchets craftable? & if not, when SA comes out, will it be possible to unravel/imbue those items? ?
I don’t recall any plans to making black staves, cleavers, and hatchets craftable; however, you will be able to unravel/imbue those items. -Leurocian -- Announcements:

In this week's Five on Friday we cover Bamboo stools, Champ Spawns, and runes.
Can it be made so that if a rune is blocked we appear on an adjacent tile, or failing that if the rune is to a roof we are dropped down the z axis? Dare I say that this is a “feature?”
All sorts of bad behavior can occur if we start letting people teleport to adjacent tiles (not the true destination) from one subserver to another. There are, and have been, plenty of problems caused just by invalidating the original destination in the first place. The server can *very* easily find an adjacent, good tile. All it does is verify that there’s valid terrain, and nothing that blocks movement (mobs or heavy items) on the tile. But is it a house step, or, heaven forbid, *inside* someone’s house? Is it one tile past a secure border players aren’t meant to pass? Is it cut off from other tiles (an island)? The questions go on, as does the potential for exploits, and thus, the reasoning for linking directly to the known-good tile from casting “Mark.”.

Not likely. Protection is a “reward” for those who observe the Virtue system. Sadly, murderers do not exactly qualify as virtuous.

I am very partial to the 2D client. SA looks to be a combination of KR and 2D graphics wise, items in KR looked well, not like the same items anymore in KR, will this be the same for the SA client?
SA will be using the same tileart for architecture and items as the 2D client, so you should still be able to enjoy the look and feel of old (with updated terrain, mobs, and a new UI)

FoF: I'll Be Back Chrissay Zeeman May 22, 2009 Is it possible in SA to macro everything that you can macro in 2D & UOA, or in regards to UOA at least as far as using pots, dressing, arming, recording and targeting with the mouse wheel? We are actually working on a feature that will allow you to import your 2d macros into the SA client. So yes when this feature is complete, every macro you could make in 2d will also be possible in SA. Much of the functionality from UOAssist is already in the SA client. It might just take some getting used to the new UI. We’ve also removed the code that made it difficult for developers of approved third-party programs to support the new client. -Supreem -- Why is the Jaanas Staff not Powder of Fortificationable & such low base durability (less in fact than Replicas)? There is no reason for the Staff to have less durability and for PoF not to be usable on it. This will be fixed in the future. -Sakkarah -- Will we ever see any other artifacts that have cool special effects that are outside the normal weapon mods again? You bet! I’m a big fan of endowing artifacts with interesting abilities and behaviors outside of the standard item properties. I’m sure we’ll see at least a few in Stygian Abyss! -Draconi -- Why are pets allows to (for example) cast Flame Strike with only 25 Magery? Wow, I have no idea. That seems pretty messed up to me. It’s most likely because their wild counterparts have an override that links directly to the spell circle, and isn’t dependent on skill. We can look into this. -Draconi -- Why is Poison from Frog Form a higher level than Poison from Serpent Form? Hmm, well, there are those frogs that’ll kill you with a touch. Then again, there are plenty of snakes that can kill you even… deader. Is the SA client going to be a top down 2D view like 2D and KR or is it going to be more like a 3d world like world of warcraft? The SA client is an improvement on the KR client, and thus still keeps the UO 2.5D look and feel – featuring new terrain, particle effects, animations, and an enhanced UI -Draconi -- The Deal with the Vorpal Blade? I thought it was supposed to make a Vortex Hole that sends us to a random location... My fault again! This and the other items will be enabled in a future Live publish. -Draconi -- Why is HLD available on glasses but HLA isn't? This would need to be investigated further. It’s possible that the Design team during Mondain’s Legacy didn’t feel a need to include the Hit Lower Attack item property on glasses. -Leurocian -- Will there be new housing tilesets in Stygian Abyss? We will have additional tile sets added to the current ones. -Leurocian -- I saw that pressing CTRL on a KR client makes player stops, and there's nothing to avoid this. I used to put many combinated keys macroes on ctrl.. This will change on SA client? Thanks. The idea behind the control key in the KR client was to allow players to face in a direction without running. This was because it was much harder in KR to face in a direction by single clicking. We will be removing this key assignment completely for SA since so many players use the control key for macros. -Supreem -- Announcements: We have updated the beta sign up page to an https address. Is something going to be done to Dread Warhorse fire breath? It can be precasted by attacking something with the dread, and when it's going to breath you mount it. This is used in PvP a lot. Right when you dismount and say all kill it will breath instantly. Wow, that’s my fault. We’ll fix it in a Live publish, and wasn’t intended. -Draconi -- Faction sigil timers were shortened for the invasions. The invasions are over, yet these short timers continue to exist, slowly killing the way factions were meant to be played. When will they be returned to normal? Yes! This and point fixes are already scheduled. -Draconi -- Will we ever have an event where monsters will drop more/better loot than they normally do? I imagine so. I know when we’ve released content such as Treasure of Tokuno and the Ilshenar, Fishing, and Treasure Hunting minor artifacts, the players really enjoy that. -Leurocian -- Will the 'Fey Slayer' property ever be available on any other weapon,other than the 'Pixie Swatter'? There are no plans at this time to have any other weapons with the Fey Slayer item property. -Leurocian -- When will a more reasonable method of obtaining war horses be available? certain factions stand no chance at holding a town sigil for 8 hours let alone benig able to place the horse breeders. Players will be able to "dismount" gargoyles that are flying around. -Leurocian -- Even when dismount wears off is there a casting time to initiate the flying? The current plan is that there will be some sort of take off delay. Similar to Ethy mounts or the Charger of the fallen. -Leurocian -- With regular mounts you can dismount the person and poison them. Is there going to be a way to ground the flying gargoyle for longer then the dismount timer the same way as a human/elf? We will be looking at flying closely and comparing it with the human/elf mounts. -Leurocian -- Will flying be possible in the felucca or just in the new areas introduced with SA? Er, yes, yes they can fly anywhere. Flying lets the Gargoyles move at mounted speed, and also access special areas that would normally be impassable to the earthbound creatures. Ter Mur will contain most of those special areas, but the other facets will have a few as well. Regardless, Gargoyle can *fly* at any time, as far as movement speed goes. -Draconi -- Is the SA client going to be a top down 2d view like 2d and KR or is it going to be more like a 3d world like world of warcraft? The SA client is an evolution of the Kingdom Reborn client. Our goal was to take everything the majority of our players hated about KR and either fix it or remove it. So to answer your question, the SA client will be using the same “isometric” view as the 2d and KR clients. -Supreem -- What are the plans for potions? Are healing potions going to be nerfed with the timer mentioned? Are other potions going to be affected? These changes have been put on hold while we focus our attention on finishing the SA expansion. We will probably take another look at these changes once things get back to normal around here.
-Supreem -- I just purchased a dirt patch (the item), thinking that I could fill plant bowls with it. I was sadly (and sorely! *squeezes pocketbook*) mistaken. I swore I read it somewhere! *scratches head* Will we ever be able to use this dirt to fill plant bowls? This falls into the “oversight” category. Soon the cleanup crew will begin removing the rubble that’s left from the blazing fires once a week. Once the rubble has been removed a house will be able to be built where the rubble used to lie.
