UO Stratics - Hunter's Guide - Fire Beetle
The Fire Beetle

General Information
The Fire Beetle is another kind of the rideable Giant Beetle. The main difference other than the color is that the Fire Beetle does not have a backpack, but to make up for that a miner can use it to smelt the ore he digs up on. It is essentially an orange forge on six legs.

Just like the normal Giant Beetle, the Fire Beetle will have to be beaten into submission before it can be tamed, which also means that it will become much weaker when it is tamed. The Fire Beetle also has the ability to increase its speed for a short duration when it is hit with ranged attacks. Although a high taming skill is required to tame one, once it has been tamed no taming skill is required to own it.

My 'Flame' is my Miners' best friend! A forge on legs yes (awesome) but a great steed and guard for me as well. She easily kills Dire Wolves and has killed orcs and Ogres as well, all of which can be found near my house. I just love it.

Fire Bug Crew

A skilled group can tame a dozen of these guys easily enough. Your main job is to not kill the spawn, but rather lead them away, invis, and leave them were they stand. After that, a tamer can quickly supply everyone in your group with a firebeetle. Then simply run straight out as a group, ignoring most of the spawn in the area, and have a gate waiting at the entrance. With the right crew, and the right skills, you can make a killing on these little gems.

I tamed one of these for my husband's miner as a surprise, expecting it to be a piece of cake. I was wrong, but it wasn't too awful. You don't need a peacer or provoker, just lead the spawn away as others have said. Don't attack the yomotsu with ranged (including paralyze) because they'll throw daggers right back at you and they HURT!

Once the spawn was out of the way and I had a nice clear area to work with, I dismounted my mare and let him do his thing. If you bring a bonded mount to help you weaken the beetle, you can still recall out with both beetle and your bonded pet so you don't need a disposable mount.

Once it was subjugated, I began taming but another player decided to lure on me repeatedly, but at 120 taming it only took 2 full attempts to get him and get the heck out before I was surrounded by yomotsu.

Miners will love you long time

A miner's best friend. Yes it's a total wimp, but the ability to smelt ingots on the go is valuble. My tamer tamed two with the same tactics. Luring all the spawn to the daemon statue, quick invis, then running out luring the beetle at the same time, while luring the spawn back again. It takes a good 10mins to set the spawn up and away from the beetle. Your main danger is arti hunters running through the dungeon luring spawn back out.

Taming the bugger was a bit of hassle with Taming 102/Lore 105. It took me a good while using lead taming, while the beetle was sub'd. Make sure you bring a disposable mount though, so you can release it, and then mount the beetle to recall out.

Bring a peacer works

I went with my other tamer friend after just transferring music/peace to replace EI/Med on my tamer.. and peaced the bejeezus out of the other spawn, and took em down with my mare (or any other high-end pet or combo would do, I suppose), whilst he subjugated and tamed the beetles. Having an extra body there to help with the spwn is handy if you can, but this is a great option for those who cannot bring a provoke bard.

A 'Wimp' is too good a title!

Hearing how easy they die fresh out of the SE Mines, I decided to take him to the Jhelom farms and see what it could do. Started with a rabbit, and the rabbit survived 4 rounds of damage. Finally started on a chicken and watched it for 5. Then I went this is insane, how's it do for damage - started attacking cows and goats... 10 min later its at half life and 2 of the 5 creatures were dead. So calling it a wimp, is giving it WAY too much credit!

Finally something useful for the miner

I love these new beetles. While a higher taming skill is required they are still pretty easy to lead tame. I have found it easier to tame them with no one else in the mine. I lure everything out and run back and cast energy field to block re-entry. Other people tend to keep luring the warriors back in while I'm attempting to tame the beetle.

when tamed, they are wimps

I tamed one for a friend of mine. She took it out mining where the beetle got targetted by a troll. My friend assumed that the beetle could handle the troll and didn't pay much attention to it. The beetle died very fast. So beware, these portable forges are very fragile.

I tamed one of these for my miner and he loves it. It is so nice to get a backpack full of ore and smelt it right away. Just be carefull because they are very weak and an ogre can kill them.

Bring a Bard
Submitted by Mark Trail on November 6th 2004.
The other spawn is 4-6 Yomotsu that respawn almost instantly and are tough as dragons. You can't lead them out because they wander back. The only way is to assign a bard or two as full time provoker. He can keep all the spawn in a big fight lasting a half hour while the tamer just has to deal with beetles.

I posted more details on U.Hall November6/7, "How to gGet a Fire Beetle."

Fire Beetles
Submitted by Cal of Kaldor on November 6th 2004.
Hard to tame because of the other spawn in the area. You have to beat it down like a regular beetle, but due to the fact it is harder to tame it quite often regenerates to the point it's no longer subjugated.

Getting them out again.
Submitted by Anonymous on November 6th 2004.
Once you manage to tame one of these, which funnily enough is as tough as trying to tame a dragon, and thats without the spawn. You have to get it back out, needless to say you cant gate it out, so if you are going to tame one, bring a disposable mount, sit on the beetle and recall out. As for subduing it, best method is to summon an EV then dispell it before it kills the beetle, that way you dont have to bring any pets, except the one your sitting on.

Hope that helps, Mavis (Captain of Cove)

I love em

Hard to get em they are sorounded by too many other creatures. Better to take some friends down there. They really look good.
