UO Stratics - Hunter's Guide - Rune Beetle
The Rune Beetle

General Information
The Rune Beetle is a huge beetle with a large glowing blue rune on its back. Its hard exoskeleton makes it a very tough foe.

The beetles bite is extremely poisonous and can inflict greater poison as well as cause the wound to bleed profusely.

In addition to Bleed and Poison attacks, the Rune Beetle also has the ability to corrupt armor for a short time, which effectively nullifies your resistances.

For the daring animal tamer it is actually possible to tame the Rune Beetle, which of course is a formidable pet to use in battle.

Eastiest Takedown

The easiest way to take these down (imo) is with two GM unicorns. The poison immunity rocks - mine tear through a Rune Beetle in about 8 seconds. Happy Hunting!

peace/mage solo tame
Submitted by Anonymous on August 6th 2009.
I just tamed one with 122 starting poisoning. SICK! just peaced it and spammed tame. When angered, I walked one step away with it and ate magic attacks. Poison had me down to 2 hp at one time. 117 taming 108 lore 110 peace.

mage/tamer solo tame
Submitted by Anonymous on June 1st 2008.
Just tamed one without any help I'm a mage/tamer and what I did is drained is health to almost nothing to slow it down , then start taming ran away heal, then restarted all over , this thing heals so you need to make sure hp is always to a minimum. Also its a good idea to bring it where there's no other creature around just south of the beetle spawn is a good idea. I died three times and on my fourth try I got it tamed in 3 taming tries. That was a quite exciting and stressfull taming experience lol

The stratics' data seems to be a little bit wrong
Submitted by Anonymous on April 3rd 2008.
The minimum poisoning level on rune beetle can be as low as 109( which sadly I got one of those......)
but the stratics says minimum is 120 o_O
Rune beetles lose 10% of their poisoning skill on taming 109 when tamed would have been 120 when wild. Edited and

easy for 120 mage/necro/110 spell weaving

these tings are a blast cast furies until its not casting spells on you and its trying to heal itself then just wither and flame stike till corpse EASY

Tame without bard
Submitted by Anonymous on May 18th 2007.
you can tame these with two people, the first person keeps the rune beetle on low health so it's slower and concentrates on healing itself rather than casting spells on you, the second person (tamer) on a mount set up a macro to tame target and run past the rune beetle an macro it keep running if you start to tame, move back if not stay a screen away then get back in there repeat again till tamed, you can easily do it without taking too much damage or getting hit. takes about 5-8 mins to tame :D

These Things Own!
Submitted by Anonymous on May 27th 2006.
I use these things and a Nightmare together when hunting, and the own bloods! I kill Blood paragons with them in no time, but you have to make sure that the paragon targets your Rune Beetle and not your mare! I think the rune beetle and mare is the best combo, you can just about take anything because of the beetles poising and armor corruption.

Fun Pet

Next to my Cu Sidhe, this is by far my favority pet to hunt with. My mare/beelte combo is wicked. Takes down just about anything I set them on.

Exciting to tame
Submitted by Anonymous on August 1st 2005.
These are quite exciting to tame. I just tamed a fresh one (without dying woohoo) because the one I had was had minimum resists (lol)

It's hard with these to come close enough to spam tame macro but far enough so they won't hit you right away when they get angry, which is a nasty hit. With any other monster this optimal distance seems easier to find.

I am a tamer/bard though, so peace helps.. but if they break it I run like mad wishing it was only a dragon.

Best ways to Tame
Submitted by Anonymous on July 24th 2005.
(by Ahez) - the best way to tame this animal is to have two people. It is good to have many heal potions at hand on the non-tamer. The tamer waits for the beetle to start attacking the non-tamer (who constantly heals) while the tamer follows, constantly taming the animal. This is okay with a 12.4% chance of taming at 100% taming skill!

Taming: Take a Friend
Submitted by Anonymous on July 16th 2005.
I was using a quite physically weak tamer/bard, but brought a friend tamer. He distracted it with his white wyrm until my peacemaking worked, then he backed off his ww.
After a few attempts, tamed! They make GREAT pets when bonded thanks to the excellent poisoning.

Damn they hurt.

Got one with my tamer first time, they kinda stand still after they finish off a summon, such as an EV. So i took advantage. I was just about to gate to the stable and 2 runes came. Mine lost. Took me another 30 mins and about 20 deaths and a lot of retammes to get it. But i got it :)

Taming tip
Submitted by Shelleybean on January 26th 2005.
I took a unicorn with me while taming. Even though I ate an orange petal prior to taming, I still got poisned and it was too powerful for the orange petal to cure. My unicorn was able to cure me though, and it made taming much easier.

Amazing
Submitted by Kainz on January 8th 2005.
I'm stunned that ea/osi could come up with such a powerful creature that makes the ww/dragon/mare look utterly poor. After 9 deaths trying to tame one without peace, I ended up buying one with max poison. I was gobsmacked by its power as it charged into a poor e.gazer which died right away. I was left laughing and saddened by such a powerful creature. It seems to like poison eles and bloods a lot. Guess they're weak to energy...

Sauron on Napa
Submitted by Anonymous on January 6th 2005.
These things are defintely easy to tame as just a tamer mage without peace, but you just need to find one thats on its own. Just don't get hit. Although beetle do not start out the best, but truely these things deal 10x more damage and 4x more faster then WW's at that when trained. Their skills raise very quickly, much faster then WW's. Another thing that makes beetles lethal in not only PvM but in PVP also, is the fact that they bleed/deadly poison, and mana dump, so if your 115+ in mage skills and know ur shit in pvp, then tag teaming in a cheap way with combos these things are defintely the best because of their high speed & mana dumping. -Sauron.

Man They're Interesting
Submitted by Anonymous on January 3rd 2005.
Nayfin-Chessy, man i was taming one and ill tell you, dont let them hit u lol, the bleed/deadly poison is a sick combo also while doing a good 30 dmg and spells, makes for a great doom buddy cuz he hits lower attack so warriros can hit for more!

To easy for a warrior
Submitted by Anonymous on January 1st 2005.
All I have to say is wow..these things are simple! They may be good when backed by a tamer, but I can solo these things with great ease and never once have to run. Just EoO and cons weap and your good to go. The only slight difficulty is their poison, but that is easily fixed by an cure by fire

You can tame easy...
Submitted by Anonymous on December 24th 2004.
If you use a tamer/bard with a friend with bardic skills and an exp instrument, you can do this easily, even with taming at 100.

Easy to tame.. Damn good to use
Submitted by Anonymous on December 18th 2004.
Easy to tame em, just lure one out, invis, use honor on yourself. Then spam your tame last target macro and your in. I get em almost first time, everytime with 108 taming.

Not too hard
Submitted by Anonymous on November 25th 2004.
After reading the comments about the uber poisoning, I went looking to tame a good one. I killed a bunch of them and was killed a bunch of times while taming, but I solo tamed one that started with 139 poisoning--and it kept 125 poisoning after taming! I provoked them on deathwatch beetles and used a mare to beat them down before taming. I also used a healing wand to heal since they suck all your mana out (lots of potions or healing skill would also work).
